Marisha Ray, who voices Keyleth, has said she took a lot of inspiration from Avatar: The Last Air Bender when she created Keyleth. This whole episode is an honor to that show. They even got Janet Varney, the voice of Korra from TLA, to voice Keyleth's mother Vilya. Such a cool touch.

I also thought that Keyleth took more than one page from Disney’s interpretation of Rapunzel. They’re both easily excited and cheerful (though Keyleth is shyer and a bit more awkward), they’re both in their late late teens (physically and mentally in Keyleth’s case), they both love animals and nature, they both fall in love with and receive the love of a roguish, charming dark haired thief, they both have (or had in Rapunzel’s case) magical connections to natural elements like the Sun and they both start off as naive, insecure helpless damsels to a degree before becoming more assertive, brave confident and combat capable as time goes on.

The Ashari are a mix of races, descended from an ancient druid circle, and each group guards a rift to an elemental plane. They also pull power from that plane. I don't think this is a spoiler, just clarification.

The voice actor who is the voice of the sword Craven Edge is none other than Matt Mercer, the Game Master and creator of the world of Exandria that Critical Role and TLoVM takes place in. He also appears in and voices many other small characters through out the show. The guy Scanlan pisses on while reading the boards in S1E1. The weapons checker at the ball that the Briarwood’s attend with VM, the guard at the gates of Vasselheim just to name a few. Finding Matt in the show is kind of like a CR version of Where’s Waldo.

So the "I have passed through fire" thing in the Campaign was a teeny bit more impactful for Marisha(keyleth's player)on like a personal level for her and had a bigger build-up. I'm not mad at how they handled it here at all because this was AMAZING. There was a guest character who was sort of a mentor for Keyleth and someone who believed in her when she didn't believe in herself. WAAAAY after that guest had been on the show, they returned to where they met him to find a letter. The guest had hand written a letter and recorded himself reading it out loud which they played on the show. TL;DR version, he was a blacksmith who was thrust into a leadership role and spoke about how metal has to pass through fire in order to become what it was meant to be. And how all of her experiences, even the painful ones, have shaped her into the person she is. Included in the letter was a ring for Marisha(the person playing Keyleth). Engraved on the ring was, "I Have Passed Through Fire". It was a really touching moment that brought marisha(and all of us watching) to tears.

    • @riolkin
      @riolkin ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah that "I Have Passed Through Fire" bit was on the back of an already extremely emotional episode and hit even harder since everyone was so raw. That line was incredible though, and I'm super happy they made it a part of Keyleth's backstory. Plus, the very next Keyleth moment after that was her telling Raishan to go f*ck herself which was a top tier Kiki moment in my opinion and a huge moment of her accepting her own power.

So bit of backstory about the phrase "pass through fire". In the campaign, the author Patrick Rothfuss played a retired paladin named Ker who journeyed with Vox Machina for a short time. He and Keyleth formed a friendship and later after they parted ways he sent Keyleth a gift. Specifically, a ring and a letter explaining the ring. You can see it on youtube easily enough (search for Critical Role Ker's letter to Keyleth). The ring bore the inscription "I have passed through fire."

    • @E-Lykos

As an OG Critter I’ve always loved Kiki. And I’m glad she’s continuously being given her due.
This episode is the equivalent of the Sunbeam moment from Season 1: where Keyleth got her chance to shine.
    Truly amazing.
Poor Vax is definitely not thinking straight, rattled by so much so soon. But when he saw Kiki enter the Fire Plane, he snapped out of it.
So, I think it’s safe to say that Vax and Keyleth are slowly rekindling what they had before.
After all, she got him to smile again for the first time since the tomb.
    For she is his light.

The convo with Craven Edge happened almost exactly like this, except it was in a crampt outhouse in Whitestone. Keyleth completed the earth part of her Aramente before the stream started, maybe we'll get to see it this time; part of it involves learning the related elemental form, but I never imagined a fire elemental looking like that. Scanlan's favour was one of the longest cons Sam ever pulled during the first campaign, but I doubt you'll have to wait that long...

With regards to Vax and the deal that was struck with the Matron of Ravens.
The easiest way to look at the bargain is that it was a Life for a Life. Vex, his sister, died, and the price that Vax paid to bring her back was himself. The Matron of Raven now owns him for all eternity. Hence the thread that had previously connected him to his sister now connect him to the Matron.

In regards to Keyleth’s Aramenté, it isn’t just that her Mother didn’t come back from her Aramenté that makes Keyleth nervous. The only reason Keyleth is on her Aramenté, particularly at such a young age, is because her mom didn’t come back. When an Ashari does not return from their Aramenté it falls on their next of kin to take it up when they are of age.

So the Vax - Keyleth romance makes a bit more sense in the tabletop version as they had been playing the "will they, won't they" game for literal months and at this point Keyleth was on the "won't they" side, and as in this, when Vax said the quiet part outloud, she shut him down pretty hard.
