Ben does well as a real life player character rather than NPC. His level of aggression, impatience and animated dialogues are perfect representation of a real person
If only he'd just walk towards the tree, walk so close and circling around it, essentially hugging the tree, he would've found a tiny, secret lever on the tree to reveal a secret treasure chest, containing 1× Hi-potion.
Yeah, I've seen lots of games where you can see piles of loot (in one case, it was a mound of gold coins & gemstones big enough for a dragon to sleep on) that are nothing but an inert decoration...Looks pretty but you can't take any of it. Heck, in the case of the "mountain of gold" I just mentioned, I could even walk all over the top of it but it was nothing more than a permanent part of the landscape.
Reminds me of a D&D campaign where the DM had drawn mounds of gold on the map. After we beat the bad guy (probably a dragon), I asked a series of questions, "So is all that gold actually there?" "And we can take it all?" "How tall exactly is that pile?" Frantically, I set about calculating the volume of the described shape and dividing it by the volume of a coin (probably used a quarter). I presented my assessment of the vast wealth we had just acquired... the party, was absolutely in agreement that the calculation was sound. The DM actually gave it to us! That only worked once though, lol.

A very well spoken bandit! Man, I hate it when this happens. I was playing a video game a while back where I killed a hill giant who had an enormous pack on his back. Tough boss fight too, had TWO stages of full health. When he finally died? Nothing. His pack was full of guts and animal parts. Useless. I was so mad, I left the cave immediately without looking around.
Or killing a Behemoth in Fallout 4 and all he got on him is a legendary frying pan and copious amounts of garbage.

This seems to be universal, especially with ranged enemies. They have infinite ammo, until you kill them. You can never loot more than a handful of ammo from them, regardless of the mountains they fired at you. Each bandit goon takes 11 arrows to kill, but their loot only has 3 arrows. It's frustrating. If they have limited ammo, you should be able to run them out, or they should try to conserve it. If they have a huge amount of ammo, then you should be able to take it!
Functionally that would be the same as making a game where you have infinite ammo. The game would be absolutely overflowing with ammo and there's no way you'd ever run out.
@@asdfqwerty6122 Ok, so give the enemies a limited supply and a better AI. First, design them so they are more careful with their ammo. Second, if the player does kill them quickly, they're rewarded with more ammo. Alternatively, you can bait them into wasting their ammo, and then they draw melee weapons. Of course, it's also possible to design a game where ranged weapons have other drawbacks, so unlimited ammo isn't a problem. Or maybe there's a functional limit on how much you can carry, regardless of how much they drop. Or the enemies carry a wide variety of weapons, so the kind of ammo they drop forces the player to constantly swap weapons to whatever ammo is available. It can be done well.
@@cymond It can be done.. but it completely changes the gameplay into something the developers didn't actually want the game to be. If you were trying to design a completely different game then it would be fine, but that's just not the game they wanted to make, and I think most players ultimately wouldn't find the end result as fun either. Realism is nice and all, but gameplay should always be prioritized first - if you can get the gameplay and also have realism then all the better, but if push comes to shove and you have to choose one or the other then having good gameplay is far more important than being realistic.
In Oblivion and Skyrim you can pick up shot arrows. Even arrows shot by enemies. So you can collect infinite arrows by dodging the arrow fire and picking the shot arrows up.
these two hav an excellent chemistry in all their competitive /head to head/ "I know something you don't know...." sketches. It's such a good dynamic. never fails to make me laugh.
Nah ... quest item No Drop that he will need to combine with a few other insanely hard items to get to complete a quest for a Class only item - and it won't be his class.
Haha! I've had plenty of battles like that. I go to loot the enemy and they have some potatoes and a flower on them. Meanwhile, I'm looking at this crazy enchanted sword of theirs on the ground that isn't lootable.
In most games you'd go in when the boss is monologuing, but for this skit it's just fuel on the fire that he's using more items you can't loot from him.
In souls games we call them out for the disrespect, as it is only our right, then we happily punish their foolishness. Stupid estus chucking NPC, you would have had me, if you didn't give me an opening.

I'm not sure if this was a conscious decision, but I absolutely love that you guys included descriptions of actions and items in your dialogue. Makes it a LOT easier to follow if you're visually impaired!
Similar to when a quest ask you for 8 wolf paws, then you kill a wolf (that should have 4 paws in total, since it has 4 legs), and it gives you zero. you can see he have them right there
Maybe the character is just dumb. So when the wolf dies, all he sees is a dead wolf and no wolf paws. It's only if during the fight he manages to lop off a paw, then he can find one once the fight is done, otherwise all he finds is a dead wolf
@@ctakitimu kind of like pokemon trainers, when your pokemon gets a crit on the one you want to capture and it faints, and the pokemon trainer can not capture it (while the pokemon is literally in the easiest situation to capture, since it is unconcious and can not defend itself)
Little did Rowan know that equipping the hunting scarf automatically equips the sword, bow, and infinite gnomish grenades (with cooldown) that Ben was using.
Player: "Oh wait, he's respawning! I'll kill him before he can use the potion or the grenade!" [SLEW OF ATTACKS, NPC DIES] Player: "Okay, here we go... wait, where's the grenade and potion?!" NPC: "I, uh... didn't have them this time!" Player: "Liar!"
Ben's despawning grin and wave reminded me of the smug grin of Wormtail as he transfigures himself back into a rat - just goes to show his deceptive nature!
In some games it makes sense to certain decree, like "get 5 hare skins" takes in KC:D about 8 hares, cause not every hare is suitable in the end (old skin, not good enough skill etc.). In other games, things like "wolf teeths" etc, on the other hands, doesn´t make sense - every wolf has multiple teeths and there is no reason for needing to kill 10 wolfs for obtaining 5 teeth, stupid AF
to be honest 2 hearts after 26 wolves its pretty generous with the drop, in tree of savior there was one single quest where i needed like 10 items from a monsters and after 120 of them got 1, it wasnt fun.
@@shadowsinsomniacs9943 I think a lot of people quit playing MMORPGs, so for them it's the old times. I can't imagine playing an MMO any time soon. It's just a cashgrab. I wonder if a company would figure out a way to make it viable without monthly payment or pay to win. Never seen an MMO that managed that. Even ESO gives you annoying handicaps like smaller inventory size if I recall correctly. Besides, in the old times stranger actually bonded over the new experience of playing together. Now people just run past eachother without a word. The magic is gone.
Or like boss uses his sword to rupture the land and make magma fountain and do tremendows damage, but when he dies and drops it, it is just green quality sword with bad stats.

I had expected that when he tried to pick up the loot he would be flagged as criminal and some OP guards would spawn next to him and kill him. Though end result with Rowan dead is the same ;)

top notch production, acting, writing and such an innovatitive use of your location in rl and within "honeywood" branching out of the village we know so well; and brilliant way to introduce new characters that felt fitting to the area! Hand shakes and slap ass all around gents!
One of the most disappointing things in a game is when you fight an enemy and they have the coolest looking weapon you have ever seen, and when you beet them you just get a couple of gold, and an item or two.. while the fully designed and fully textured and coded weapon that the devs could have let you take is just sitting there on the floor
In a few games it took me costly hours to find out that the weapon fell out of the enemy's hands most of the time, to be picked up from the ground (instead of enemy's inventory). Think Kingdom Come or Witcher.
In JA2 you kill the high level enemy and got some crappy loot (because you're low level yet and drop percentage low too). But. You stun enemy with crowbar or drop him on ground and then steal from him all kind of fancy high level loot or just use brute force and snatch it from his hands. :)

I don't know if you've already done the following, but I'm currently playing Assassin's Creed Origins and seem to find an awful lot of critically injured hostages. They tell of their suffering and pain and that I need to carry them out or home. The moment I drop them off outside, they instantly jump up and run away like a healthy kindergarten child towards fresh cookies. I swear, those lazy bums are trolling me and it makes me think of the Epic NPC man a lot.
Thank you, this is exactly how we feel as players! I always found it ridiculous when you kill a mob and all it drops is an arrow or some other useless thing but the NPC that you're fighting has all types of gear on it absolutely ridiculous... Well Done Folks!!
Honestly this just shows how well Bethesda did with Skyrim. You can literally take the clothes off of someone's dead body if you wanted and their inventory is freely seeable and exploitable with pickpocketing. Insane that that's not the default given how long ago Skyrim came out
While it might thematically make sense, it doesn't really lead to good gameplay. It just means that you have to give every NPC a set of garbage items which are just pointless clutter, because if you gave them any actually good items the game would be overflowing with them and they wouldn't be special anymore. I don't really want games to be cluttered with useless junk personally.
@@asdfqwerty6122 Enemy has a sword, you can take that sword. It's not junk, it's realistic. You rather games be like WoW, where even though there are swords decorating the walls, you can't interact with them whatsoever. In Skyrim, you can take that sword off the wall, enchant and hone it, make it a master weapon or just sell it. Freedom and realism. Plus the game still has high level reward items like WoW.
@@asdfqwerty6122 I do. I'd also like for vendors to not buy everything. Sure you aren't going to actually pick up 90% of items, but it's more immersive when you see it all as lootable.
It's better, though. The loot sits there, taunting Rowan, who has to come back and retrieve his corpse from right at the boss' feet, without his gear, or lose everything.
@@Werewolf_dr Diablo 2 did that, when you died, you could go back and recover the gear from your corpse... but if you died again, the first corpse disappeared, and only your gear from last death was available on a second one (so depending on circumstances, it sometimes was better to quit and start a fresh game, then your corpse was back in a city, but all the enemies were back, too).
What's more frustrating is when you kill a high level ranger in this case and you are a ranger as well and then they drop one of the best pieces of armour in the game... for a wizard... and it is a single player game with no inventory transfer.

I have played a few mmos and what seems to happen at high levels is people spec into specific gear and then spend maybe a couple of nights just trying to get that specific gear. That doesn't sound like fun to me and that's why I don't play mmos
That system doesn't exist in a single player game with no inventory transfer. So you've literally never felt that frustration, and neither has anyone else.
*For a second there I though modern weapons had glitched into a sword and shield RPG.* Plus, I've always been amazed when the horse manages to scale a cliff that you can't climb. No quicker way to reach the top.

I know this feeling. Mostly skyrim but ya plenty of games have bandits with storehouses full of loot and goods and you just end up with less ammo and recorces in the end. Oh and the money you get from it is going to be spent replenishing your ammo.
@@AnEnemySpy456 An exception being the Dark Brotherhood Assassins you can run into during random world encounters. Despite clearly wearing a set of Shrouded Armor you can't actually take it off their dead body.
The new Pathfinder game got horrible for that at some points.. you'd kill a dragon or something and there'd be a room literally *covered* in chests and gold pieces. And it'd give you like.. 200 gold. Err.. no. I can see there must be *thousands* right here I started just cheating in extra money when I found those. Screw that, I'm taking all my well deserved scenery loot
Exactly. In WoW there's a boss encounter near a massive treasure hoard and after the boss is dead, and his nearby lackies, we cannot interact with the "mountain" of gold. We can only collect the 'spare change' off the boss and a piece of gear loot. Not counting a fight against a monster made up of gold coins, gems, etc and we barely get anything from it.
One thing I really appreciate in Skyrim is how you can literally take what they are wearing... I... just... wasn't expecting that the first time I did it and it was my first time literally undressing an NPC down to their undies in a video game...
The funny part is when you loot everything and he continues naked like nothing happens. But not only him, but the surrounding people too. I also remember than, in Oblivion, you can put in the inventory of the people, objects with weight 0. So you can enchant some zero weight cloth with negative effect enchanting, put in his inventory, and wait him to die because the cloth drops his health to zero. Considered "non-murder" death.
I mean, what did Rowan expect? Ben went down with two slashes although he was half full in health! No enemy who goes down with so little effort gives good loot...
This was the first video in a while on youtube that made me actually laugh out loud a few times, and, not sure why, but the "haha" at the end was the cherry on top of a brilliant video! Killed me! :D

Just makes me think of all the times where I've put off continuing the story of the game I'm playing because I have to loot the room first lol. "Yes I know we're in a hurry. Yes I know we have to save the princess before it's too late. No, I'm not going to stop checking underwear drawers, I might miss some really good loot!"
I remember in classic Everquest seeing a group of high level characters fighting one of the cityguards in either Qeynos or Freeport and noting they all had high level armor, asked if I could have the guard's (apparently) bronze helmet. One of them responded "What? Oh, no, these guards have no gear." and I was like "What? It sure looks like he has full bronze armor..." This was the moment I learned the horrible, horrible truth that most MMORPG npcs armor was purely cosmetic. Also that nobody wanted warriors in classic Everquest. Stopped playing not long after.
This seems to be part of the continuing story of how they are all becoming more and more sentient. The bandit king reduced his own available loot in order to trick Rowan into letting him de-spawn giving him a chance to kill him.
This is so true in every game with randomised loot from enemies or chests. Fight an epic boss, finally break into a chest set on super hard, or hack the magical lock that explodes in your face, leaving you cursed if you botch it up...and you get two minor mana potions, which is especially bullshit if you're a non-spellcaster!

Even worse is when the loot refuses to be worn by you because you are the wrong class/level. Who knew loot could be so picky?

UNREALISTIC! No one in the history of gaming has ever been happy about a boss healing.
Nah, for example Final Fantasy 4, boss is constantly healing, but I cast Reflect on her. Then I am happy when she does it :)

In most games you'd go in when the boss is monologuing, but for this skit it's just fuel on the fire that he's using more items you can't loot from him.
In souls games we call them out for the disrespect, as it is only our right, then we happily punish their foolishness. Stupid estus chucking NPC, you would have had me, if you didn't give me an opening.
It'd make sense within Skycraft though, because Venjamin the Bandit needs time to eat the vial so it's pretty much free damage

I'm not sure if this was a conscious decision, but I absolutely love that you guys included descriptions of actions and items in your dialogue. Makes it a LOT easier to follow if you're visually impaired!
Similar to when a quest ask you for 8 wolf paws, then you kill a wolf (that should have 4 paws in total, since it has 4 legs), and it gives you zero. you can see he have them right there
Not every paw is good enough. Sometime it's one, sometime zero, and sometime 8.

Maybe the character is just dumb. So when the wolf dies, all he sees is a dead wolf and no wolf paws. It's only if during the fight he manages to lop off a paw, then he can find one once the fight is done, otherwise all he finds is a dead wolf
@@ctakitimu kind of like pokemon trainers, when your pokemon gets a crit on the one you want to capture and it faints, and the pokemon trainer can not capture it (while the pokemon is literally in the easiest situation to capture, since it is unconcious and can not defend itself)

Ah, yes, just like the classic: the quest to obtain 5 hearts of a wolf. 26 wolves later, you got 2 hearts.
In some games it makes sense to certain decree, like "get 5 hare skins" takes in KC:D about 8 hares, cause not every hare is suitable in the end (old skin, not good enough skill etc.).
In other games, things like "wolf teeths" etc, on the other hands, doesn´t make sense - every wolf has multiple teeths and there is no reason for needing to kill 10 wolfs for obtaining 5 teeth, stupid AF
to be honest 2 hearts after 26 wolves its pretty generous with the drop, in tree of savior there was one single quest where i needed like 10 items from a monsters and after 120 of them got 1, it wasnt fun.

I wonder if a company would figure out a way to make it viable without monthly payment or pay to win. Never seen an MMO that managed that. Even ESO gives you annoying handicaps like smaller inventory size if I recall correctly. Besides, in the old times stranger actually bonded over the new experience of playing together. Now people just run past eachother without a word. The magic is gone.

I had expected that when he tried to pick up the loot he would be flagged as criminal and some OP guards would spawn next to him and kill him. Though end result with Rowan dead is the same ;)

One of the most disappointing things in a game is when you fight an enemy and they have the coolest looking weapon you have ever seen, and when you beet them you just get a couple of gold, and an item or two.. while the fully designed and fully textured and coded weapon that the devs could have let you take is just sitting there on the floor
Fallout 2 did this to me. I wanted that boss weapon so much. Or the armor, anything. No drop.
Assassins Creed Origins and Odyssey
Soon everyone would be running around with it and it wouldn't be cool any more.
In a few games it took me costly hours to find out that the weapon fell out of the enemy's hands most of the time, to be picked up from the ground (instead of enemy's inventory). Think Kingdom Come or Witcher.
In JA2 you kill the high level enemy and got some crappy loot (because you're low level yet and drop percentage low too).
But. You stun enemy with crowbar or drop him on ground and then steal from him all kind of fancy high level loot or just use brute force and snatch it from his hands. :)

Hey, VLDL. I don't know if you've already done the following, but I'm currently playing Assassin's Creed Origins and seem to find an awful lot of critically injured hostages. They tell of their suffering and pain and that I need to carry them out or home. The moment I drop them off outside, they instantly jump up and run away like a healthy kindergarten child towards fresh cookies.
I swear, those lazy bums are trolling me and it makes me think of the Epic NPC man a lot.

Honestly this just shows how well Bethesda did with Skyrim. You can literally take the clothes off of someone's dead body if you wanted and their inventory is freely seeable and exploitable with pickpocketing. Insane that that's not the default given how long ago Skyrim came out
While it might thematically make sense, it doesn't really lead to good gameplay. It just means that you have to give every NPC a set of garbage items which are just pointless clutter, because if you gave them any actually good items the game would be overflowing with them and they wouldn't be special anymore. I don't really want games to be cluttered with useless junk personally.
@@asdfqwerty6122 Enemy has a sword, you can take that sword. It's not junk, it's realistic.
You rather games be like WoW, where even though there are swords decorating the walls, you can't interact with them whatsoever. In Skyrim, you can take that sword off the wall, enchant and hone it, make it a master weapon or just sell it. Freedom and realism.
Plus the game still has high level reward items like WoW.
@@asdfqwerty6122 I do. I'd also like for vendors to not buy everything. Sure you aren't going to actually pick up 90% of items, but it's more immersive when you see it all as lootable.

It's better, though. The loot sits there, taunting Rowan, who has to come back and retrieve his corpse from right at the boss' feet, without his gear, or lose everything.

@@Werewolf_dr Diablo 2 did that, when you died, you could go back and recover the gear from your corpse... but if you died again, the first corpse disappeared, and only your gear from last death was available on a second one (so depending on circumstances, it sometimes was better to quit and start a fresh game, then your corpse was back in a city, but all the enemies were back, too).
What's more frustrating is when you kill a high level ranger in this case and you are a ranger as well and then they drop one of the best pieces of armour in the game... for a wizard... and it is a single player game with no inventory transfer.
Named loot bound to character can be a problem.

I have played a few mmos and what seems to happen at high levels is people spec into specific gear and then spend maybe a couple of nights just trying to get that specific gear. That doesn't sound like fun to me and that's why I don't play mmos

That system doesn't exist in a single player game with no inventory transfer. So you've literally never felt that frustration, and neither has anyone else.

Plot twist: the scarf is actually a legendary key item that can be used as a proof for defeating the boss for the quest.
The only thing worse than this are single player games where unique enemies that don't respawn have drop rates for unique items.

I know this feeling. Mostly skyrim but ya plenty of games have bandits with storehouses full of loot and goods and you just end up with less ammo and recorces in the end.
Oh and the money you get from it is going to be spent replenishing your ammo.

I love it when an enemy has a random drop that's literally something they're wearing or holding.
That's why Skyrim is cool. Anything a character has is an actual item you can take.

Reminds me of the time I unlocked a master level chest on skyrim, wasting a lot of lockpicks and only got ten gold and a gem.
It’s a shame because the hunting scarf is the most powerful armour in the game.
and those two arrows are actually slots with unlimited arrows one for fire and one for frost arrows. He missed out on a lot there
I farmed the boss for three weeks straight to get that scarf and this noob let it despawn :(

Or when the boss has an epic, glowy weapon that you can see lying near the corpse but no...that is not part of the loot drop.
The new Pathfinder game got horrible for that at some points.. you'd kill a dragon or something and there'd be a room literally *covered* in chests and gold pieces. And it'd give you like.. 200 gold. Err.. no. I can see there must be *thousands* right here

Exactly. In WoW there's a boss encounter near a massive treasure hoard and after the boss is dead, and his nearby lackies, we cannot interact with the "mountain" of gold. We can only collect the 'spare change' off the boss and a piece of gear loot.
Not counting a fight against a monster made up of gold coins, gems, etc and we barely get anything from it.

One thing I really appreciate in Skyrim is how you can literally take what they are wearing... I... just... wasn't expecting that the first time I did it and it was my first time literally undressing an NPC down to their undies in a video game...
The funny part is when you loot everything and he continues naked like nothing happens. But not only him, but the surrounding people too.
I also remember than, in Oblivion, you can put in the inventory of the people, objects with weight 0. So you can enchant some zero weight cloth with negative effect enchanting, put in his inventory, and wait him to die because the cloth drops his health to zero. Considered "non-murder" death.

This happens SO often in WoW. Defeat a huge mob wearing obviously great weapons and armor, but it only drops 2 minor bones and a small patch of hide.

What an amazing farming spot - respawn every 1.5min. Imagine the amount of arrows and scarfs you can get.
Not to mention it takes only 3 swings with sword to take him down, just gotta get close enough.

The boss healing in the middle of a battle should be an episode all to itself. "oh come on!!"
I remember in classic Everquest seeing a group of high level characters fighting one of the cityguards in either Qeynos or Freeport and noting they all had high level armor, asked if I could have the guard's (apparently) bronze helmet. One of them responded "What? Oh, no, these guards have no gear." and I was like "What? It sure looks like he has full bronze armor..."
This was the moment I learned the horrible, horrible truth that most MMORPG npcs armor was purely cosmetic. Also that nobody wanted warriors in classic Everquest. Stopped playing not long after.
This seems to be part of the continuing story of how they are all becoming more and more sentient. The bandit king reduced his own available loot in order to trick Rowan into letting him de-spawn giving him a chance to kill him.
Whoever let Rowan forget his lines just got a pay cut.
This is so true in every game with randomised loot from enemies or chests. Fight an epic boss, finally break into a chest set on super hard, or hack the magical lock that explodes in your face, leaving you cursed if you botch it up...and you get two minor mana potions, which is especially bullshit if you're a non-spellcaster!
