Hurricane Beryl is hitting Houston today, keep us in mind! Missed a few months of uploads but still targeting 12 videos for 2024. Many edits in the works right now!
Just started kayaking last year, as I sold my flats boat. I,m 68, and love your channel Gatewood. I have a Hobie otback, live in Kerrville, so I,m going to buy a Tarpon 120 for the Guadalupe. I don,t get to camp...no partners to go with up here. But I fish it alot and love being on that river. Retired San Antonio Police..27 yrs. God Bless you and your wife sir.
Enjoy the switch to kayaking! It's a lot less boat to throw around and store versus a flats boat. I also like that kayaks can get to more secluded places on a river. Have fun out there in kerrville!

Hey Gatewood! Epic ride through the canyon! Stunning! Just a, "this what we do", fyi, we live over on the western side of Texas so the wind is never relentless so when kayaking, on winding lakes or rivers we use a tie down ski rope. Tie it to the bow of the boat and than the other end to the side strap of our live vest. We make sure that the slack runs down the floor of the yak from the bow & under our leg (of the side you tie to your life vest) so that in the event of a flip our leg is less likely to entangle in the rope. We take a separate shorter tie down to attach our Remote Designs back pack to the yak so we don't lose it. Keep paddling! God bless with safety & adventure.
We camped out there years ago, but didn't have a chance to see the canyon like this. So beautiful! Good to know about the changes in the inflatable with the changes in temperature...we didn't know about that and it may just help us in the future! Adam recently read The Emerald Mile and loved it and after hearing your thoughts on rivers, lakes, and dams, he highly recommends it if you haven't read it yet!
Oh cool! Where were y'all camped at? Lots of great campgrounds and BLM spots all over there. The pressure change through me for a loop! Just bought a K Pump mini on Amazon to bring with me on trips so that it doesn't happen again. Kinda scary! I'll check out the Emerald Mile, sounds like a good listen. Always interesting to hear perspectives about rivers, lakes, and dams. Hope y'all have been well!
I love your videos! They are the primary reason my wife and I got into Kayak Camping. We just got back from 228 miles on the Yukon and Teslin rivers. If you want a fantastic trip/video, I highly recommend those rivers. Also, we used two of your roll top backpacks, a 20L dry bag and the 60L duffle. All four held up awesome; not a single drop of water got in anything. We also had a 50L Yeti and a 100L Watershed. We liked Remote design equipment the best for the zipper/weight/value.
Thanks, Carl! I've been editing 3 videos in addition to this one so be on the lookout. Next one I'm hoping is a kayak camping edit here in Texas. Just wrapped up a pretty sweet trip. Thanks for the well wishes!
I kind of sweated for you for a while there! It’s freaky how things can change. Some of the most beautiful places CAN kill you. Glad you made it okay and kept safe. Can’t wait for more videos! So happy to hear new ones are cooking. I’ll be thinking about you and yours during this weather approaching Houston. Stay safe my friend. All the best-
Another great video, just got back from the South Llano myself. Keep those videos coming I need ideas for my next out of state trip I take once a year . Also praying for you guys in Houston I have many relatives there.
The South Llano is a favorite after our trip last year. Seems to be a solid place year round. Glad y'all made it out there! We will hopefully be fine but it's always interesting when a hurricane blows through town.
Been there, but not in the water, up on top. There's a bridge that goes over it where it's a lot more narrow. Awesome place, and largely unknown (hopefully it stays that way).
Is the up on top bike worth it? I wanted to scurry up there but ran out of time after the paddle. I’m sure it’ll stay unknown since it’s so far out of the beaten path for tourists
great video i dealt with some scary winds on the devils towards the end on day 4 we were going nowhere fast it seemed impossible to get around that bend, worse chapped lips ever. Hoping to plan a trip soon thinking the entire san marcos river one trip.
Gosh scary winds come out of nowhere and can really throw you for a loop. Glad y'all were fine. Wind on the devils is no joke! The whole SM would be pretty sweet. One of the only reasonable source to sea trips in TX.
That scenery was so awesome!! Loved that area Gatewood. Got a little bit bumpy on you on the way back. Wind is always the enemy. Cool video my friend 👍🏻👍🏻
Absolutely gorgeous terrain GW. And you're a brave man trusting in that inflatable. But even if you HAD lost the kayak, that killer back pack by Remote Designs would have served as a second floatation device and you could have safely kicked your way home.
Look like a fun time man. I am surprised that you didn't take your regular kayak 🛶 man or took the Pump with you . But I am glad you made it back safely man. My prayers 🙏 are with you man for this storm. Please be safe out there brother. I Probably be down in Houston after the storm passed by to deliver RED CROSS food & drink there. Take it easy buddy and be careful.
I love watching your videos - so inspired to go kayak camping! Have you ever used an Oru kayak or would you consider reviewing one? Asking cause I bought one thinking it would make it easier to go and I’m curious if you think it could handle something like this trip.
Thanks, Wazoo! Ya know I have hesitations for any sit in kayak if you're solo paddling. I always like having a sit on top in or self bailing inflatable so if I flip or take a wave over the bow, I'm fine. In a sit in kayak if you're out in the middle and you flip, ya gotta swim everything to shore which is near impossible. I'd also have reservations about the ORU and its durability, an inflatable would be my choice for packable options. This Nyce Nugget fits in a suitcase so I can go on vacation with it, pretty sweet!
The majority of Oru kayak models are not made for open water like this with the possibility of big waves. They are nearly impossible to get back into on the water, and even hard to swim to shore without adding float bags. Unless you're talking about their equivalent to a sea kayak, skirt, bomber roll, and all, deffo not. Source: I am both a river guide and a happy Oru recreational kayak owner. Every paddle craft is for some set of conditions, and things go wrong when you take them outside those conditions.
Thanks THT! Seems like there’s a lot of boat access lakes out west that give you access to these places in a much more low impact way. Could be a good way to do it!
Thanks man! Yeah there was only one time right after the wind event that got me spooked about sharp rocks. The waves washed me close to them with force and I was like…uhhh well looks like shore isn’t safe either hha
I believe you used to have a video up of you kayaking on private land in Texas, I’m just curious where that was! Not trying to go there but possibly in that general direction, thanks!

Thanks Dan! I’ve done the lower guad below canyon lake at 68cfs on the Nyce Nugget but I probably wouldn’t recommend it for a multi day kayak camping trip at 30cfs. That much weight scraping the rocks would give me heart burn for sure!
@@GatewoodBrown awesome! yah makes sense. watched a guy in a packraft the other day take on the Devils. i was like "no thanks" heart burn would become "ulcer" on that one :) seems like a great boat to pack on a trip thou... 22ibs seems keen for a ultralite trip. perhaps an up and back in deeper water if you could pack it in
