The greatest thing about this film is that it didn't feel like it was about a comic book character but a real person, which is far more terrifying.
I like realistic versions of the joker where he’s just a dude who wears makeup and dyes/sprays his hair like cesar, heath, and Joaquin
@@Kiiieeechiii are you saying Nicholson wasn’t realistic?
@@neonsmoviereviews7969 Not in the fact that his Joker followed the same premise as the comics which was unrealistic as he fell into a vat of chemicals. I love the fact that Batman is created by the Jokers first real joke namely killing his parents. This is revealed in the scene previously were he tells a knock knock joke. He isn't the person holding the gun in this movie but he is the reason behind it happening. From the Jokers point of view it is justice for abandoning him as a child as he is convinced he is the true son of the Wayne family and that the joker just as easily could have been batman which I am sure he finds terribly funny. Powerful stuff as you can hear his desperate laughing trying to understand if he is in fact crying or laughing at that very moment.

I remember watching this. I went to the theater alone for this one. Found myself uncontrollably smiling when joker stood up on the car and drew the smile on his face. Powerful
What I love about this scene is that without any words it explains the relationship between the Joker and his thugs.
They're his fans.
They get the joke. Arthurs "comdey" speaks to their anger and frustration. They also felt abandoned by society and look down on by the ruling elite class. So jokers humor connects with them, making them feel less alone. Which allows them to unleash their built up rage against a world that has never cared for them. They fall in line with his ideology which gives them a sense of purpose and become radicalized.
In return Arthur finally gets what he has always wanted: an audience that loves him. You can see he's holding back from getting emotional but he embraces his new act and turns to the crowd like he's on stage about to perform. At last he's finally found people who think he's smart, revolutionary and funny. In a twisted way he achieved his dream of becoming a comedian with a loyal fandom.
It's as they say, "Childhood is when you idolize batman. Adulthood is when you realise that the Joker is right."
@Phantom Wraith people misunderstand that, often that’s used as a way to excuse the same treatment Arthur went through because someone like Batman is too “good” that no could be such even though they can, Joker wasn’t necessarily right, but he was sure as hell understandably and more reasonably justified than society, the same society that Batman faces against because they created people like the Joker and because he isn’t there to defend their every wrong doing.

the clown prince of crime
@@complte6440 Keep in mind the very last scene where Arthur's in a mental hospital; in an interview, the director claims that this laugh is the only real, genuine laugh the Joker gives out during the entire movie. I think most of us know that the Joker creates numerous past experiences in his head to imagine and sees them as jokes (In the dark knight, Joker had a new story every time he wanted to let someone know how he got his scars), and DC themselves have never confirmed a true origin story for the joker. Basically:
We don't know how Joker really became Joker because Arthur's stories that he's lived in his head all seem like realities that he's gone through, so if the real Joker doesn't know how he became himself, how could anyone (including the audience)?
So the director confirming that his only real laugh (I interpret it as 'real' meaning the only laugh that really occurred, NOT the only laugh that was 'genuinely funny' to Arthur) suggests that this entire movie may have just been another past life experience the Joker's tragic mind has created in his head.
This is my theory and tbh the only hole I can find with it is that we see the Waynes' deaths, which Joker did not witness indicating that these events may have actually happened; However I think Joker witnessed everything we've seen (the audience + in a third-person manner) because he wants to create a perfect reality in his head. This may seem far-fetched and tbh this is the first time I've ever theorized about something so hopefully, maybe someone else has a better interpretation to this 'hole'. But I'd love for you all to let me know what you guys think! (Sorry again I'm not rly good at making these haha)
By adoring him, you show you missed the point of his character
@@thepurpleshade486 You beat me to it
This scene is by far my most favorite scene. The colors, lighting, theatrics, it all flowed perfectly and Joaquin Phoenix couldn't have been outmatched by anyone to perform this scene. Not only did he strike well similarity with the character, his acting was just so up to par with someone that is mentally ill struggling to gain sympathy from society and just becoming unhinged from all of the despair and trauma he endured. He finally felt like he was getting recognized and listened to, and you could just FEEL THAT while watching it. This scene to me should be a Hallmark of what acting and theatrics should be.
What a powerfully nihilistic scene this is, the music makes you feel the pain, the tragedy that was his life, and the appreciation at last that he receives in the chaos. A passerby might see a crazy person dressed up as a clown but we see his pain, the long journey and descent to madness all in his eyes as he realises he’s finally appreciated as he completes the archetypal costume with the smile. The whole movie he kept trying to smile but something was amiss, he knew it wasn’t right because he was faking it. After realising the truth, about his past, and the truth of the darkness in the world, he could finally see how ridiculous it all was, and decides to finally genuinely smile because he finally gets the “joke”. He’s the symbol that directly represents that ridiculousness, and pointlessness of everything. They cheer for him but the music is dark and tragic, and he finally accepts his role in society as the chaotic nihilist outsider that ridicules and torments those that oppressed him and others like him in a system that favours tormentation. He was playing the game wrong and trying to fit in incorrectly, and now here he is, fully realised, a dark reflection of the society that bore him.

Joker: I'm an agent of chaos and you know the thing about chaos...it's fair.
Madking 357 fear
@@ChrisValera Actually Madking 357 had it right ... it's fair. Ledger's Aussie accent slipped a little on that line and made "fair" sound like "fear". But it's fair.
@@ChrisValera That doesn't make sense contextually with the rest of the scene. He was convincing Harvey that he wasn't the enemy, and that Rachel wasn't intentionally selected to die. This was a lie, but his point stands that chaotic action is fair. A car could swerve into you headon at any time and end your life. Why did the car pick you? It didn't. The driver had no agency over who died, he just put the wheels in motion. No pun intended. He sparked chaos and the universe took the wheel.
sept anyone that has played any video game will highly disagree with you the agents of rng or chaos is fair.
@@hardwirecars it's absolutely fair in that it doesn't unfairly pick someone or biases towards someone to some end result. You get fucked by RNG but others do just the same
Great man
I love this movie so much, the intensity expressed in the scene, how the writing speaks to the audience the music. It’s just so perfect
When he uses the blood to make a smile-iconic
I was sitting there thinking: "oh man... he's gonna do it, isn't he? Please tell me he's gonna make the smile. You gotta do it..."
And I was not disappointed. 😀
Alif Muhammad favourite part of the movie
Honestly, I was a little sad the white face was makeup, but the blood smile... I'm pretty sure that's always been Canon
Yes...
Turning lemons into lemonade.
For me, this was the saddest scene. Arthur, or the small part of him that's left, realises that even now, no one cares about him; they just care about what they think he represents. He feels that the only way for people to even notice he exists is to become this monster. It's so sad that his life was so terrible that becoming the Joker was a better alternative than being Arthur Fleck.
Even sadder was that he was never even Arthur Fleck. His mother adopted him, and w/ Thomas Wayne dead there's no way to know if he's actually Wayne's son. To him he was no one.
I literally feel like this. I was adopted. I’m mentally ill. I get treated like shit. This is the greatest fucking movie ever made.

No me canso nunca de ver no solo esta escena , sino toda la pelicula.
The way the music builds as he paints on that final, iconic Joker grin with the blood hits me every time
2:52 camera shot almost looks like the crowd of a comedy club n he’s finally made it n everyone is cheering for him. What he always wanted. As he realizes the blood from his mouth that dream quickly fades and he’s forced to face reality. But rather the blood remind him of his pain… he uses it to make a smile. “Nothing can hurt me anymore.” This is his final dive into madness. Throughout the film he struggles to keep it together… but In this moment he finally embraces it… leaving behind his sanity. Brilliantly shot and a masterful performance.
Thats the beauty of Joaquin Phoenix, hes up there on that car surrounded by people cheering him, and he recognizes that arthur wouldve always wanted a loving crowd, so he starts performing, and they love it, and it validates him that violence is good, so he draws the smile of blood and truly becomes The Joker.
This scene made me shed a whole tear. It was truly a bittersweet moment. The old him was finally able to rest, but at what cost.

I find myself coming back to this movie every once in a while. I wasn’t ready for a DC movie released in 2019 to be a topic of discussion in my college film class. Todd Phillips did an incredible job. Joaquin Phoenix is my personal favorite joker.
Even when he makes the bloody smile, basically letting the Joker persona take over, you still see how his eyes has tears in it. The equivalent of having a fresh wound that will probably never heal.

It is just so impactful that Aruther has faced the most tragic circumstances of his entire life, and how one broken, damaged, and abused man who finds no happiness in his life and his disgust for how society treated him creates an inhumane and somewhat compelling vicious villian. The amount of pain someone can go through that he decides he has enough and burns the world, and rises up as new beacon and personification of hope of all who have been through darkness is a legendary cinematic experience.
