I just lost my little girl parrotlet, Totori, a couple weeks ago. She just had her fifth birthday. last year she laid 21 eggs and really took a toll on her. this year she got egg bound 3 times. When she was recovering from the third one, her immune system failed and she caught something else and passed. nothing could be done...It's been very hard...I had her since she was three months old. I don't to see that happen to your little girl. My vet suggested I try melatonin to reduce her sexual behavior and aggression, since she was a chronic egg layer. It's more natural and better for your bird, since the hormone injections can cause negative effects over time and doesn't cost much. You can get 3mg tablets that dissolve in water. you just put it in the water every morning water change. You can give them as much as needed. If your baby gets too sleepy then pull it back a bit. That should help you get through the nesting season. Best of luck to you and Tinkerbell.

I know how heart breaking it is watching your baby slowly waist away from cronic egg laying.I adopted a male. How did I know he was a he? I spent the money and had a DNA test.Over time they had 12 babies.I keep them in seperate homes. The cronic egg laying stopped. She is 17 now.Close to the end of her life expectancy. When I think about her leaving I cry.Her mate is alittle younger I'm afraid he will leave too. From a broken heart. But I kept 2 of her children. However I can't help it but I love her the most. This was hard for me to write.

I learned from the breeder, they said if I don't want my birds to egg laying, I have to remove the nest out of the case, let them play, and sleep on the perch. Because once your birds lay eggs, they lose massive calcium, lose their weight, and of course make their life shorter, some birds die after laying eggs because of this reason.

I also love how Parrotlets eat and shake their heads and make a mess. Although messy they are mighty cute. I have one too! Alhamdolillah

LIGHTING/DARKNESS = HORMONE REGULATION. Please consider giving her 12-14 hours sleep (complete undisturbed darkness) it mimics the hormone chemistry of fall/winter which are not breeding seasons (precisely bc the birds need light to make hormones). The string of lights behind her cage are pretty but keep them off when she sleeps. Good luck💜

Hi there, I just love this video! I used to have a parrolette and I hate to say it, she passed away while trying to pass and egg. The vet just couldn't do anything to save her. It's been a while since I've had a bird but now I'm ready again. I've just recently bought a cage and I'm trying to decide on either a Rose Crowned Conure (first choice so far) Crimson Bellied Conure (second choice) and lastly a African Grey Timneh. I'm looking for a cuddly bird that I can take with me. I love the fact that you bird is flighted. I think that's a great thing....good exercise! It also shows how much your bird loves you, if they want to be with you they fly to you and if not...they fly away! I am putting up perches, swings and hoops in different parts of the house so my bird can fly with me from room to room and have other places to play and eat! I hope and pray your bird is okay and this egg laying stops soon. It's so hard on their little systems! I imagine it's frustrating too! (for both of you!) Good luck and thanks for the great videos! Bill S.

I'm so sorry to hear you lost your little one, but I am happy to hear you are looking to get another feathered friend soon! Birds are really special for sure, it's a relationship like no other. Thank you for the kind compliments on my video and I hope things go well for you with choosing your next bird!

No mirrors! That makes them think that there is a mate and that could be the reason she is laying eggs.

This is just something I learned some time ago when researching diets for my friend who had a cockatoo. She fed a primarily seed based diet and that was making her more hormonal as well as a little aggressive. I helped her change the birds diet and she became a lot calmer. Don't know what diet you have your bird on but keep that I mind. Also, have you ever used Rescue Remedy? I don't know if it would help with egg binding or egg laying, but it does calm down animals, and can be used on birds. Maybe something to check into. It also makes me wonder if there are some good herbs for birds that have this problem. I don't own a bird but rescue cats and dogs and did a bit of research for my friend as I said. I would have birds if I could but with all the cats it would be too risky. I would definitely check into natural remedies to see what there might be to help with egg laying or egg binding. Good luck :))

13 if you're responsible and have a lot of time to spend with your bird. FlockTalk has great videos on parrotlet care. If you don't have at least an hour to spend time with the parrot don't get one. And if you don't have the funds to properly provide for the parrot do get one. And if you aren't ready for at least 15 years of care for a parrot don't get one. Hope this helps😊

HELP!!! I thought I had a boy parrotlet, blue eye shadow and all...only HE...laid 3 eggs from yesterday to today!
They fell to the bottom of the cage floor where the newspaper is so she couldn’t even get to them and I just finally noticed them when she went to the bottom to try to see them.
It’s only her..so none are fertile...and she has at least one more in her so I put a little house in so she could lay it without distress. But she’s had 3 so how many more will she have before she stops and what do I do??? Help!!!
I thought she was a he!

  • @lilithmarleen
    @lilithmarleen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Ok, I'm going to try to be helpful here. I'm not a vet or anything, but I have a couple of cockatiels and I read a bunch of stuff when I was investigating bird care prior to getting my feathery friends.
From what I understood of my research, getting rid of your bird's entertainment won't make her stop laying eggs. She's hormonal, so she's going to keep doing it. First of all, there should be no nest in her cage, nor anything resembling a hiding place she can convert into a nest. This will make her lay her eggs on the floor and be less likely to try to hatch them.
What's recommended in these cases if she's able to lay the eggs without problems (no egg-binding), is letting her complete the laying process. She'll lay an egg every couple of days until she has a few of them (4-6 maybe? No idea about parrotlets). You MUST let her lay her eggs and keep them in the cage or replace them one at a time with fake eggs, because if she keeps laying an egg at a time and seeing that egg disappear immediately, she'll just keep laying nonstop, which will drain her of calcium and other vital minerals, which will take a toll on her overall health, plus she'll be exhausted and more prone to egg-binding.
After she completes her cycle, let her keep the eggs for a few more days until she loses interest in them. Then they're safe to remove. If after this she starts laying again soon, you have to move on to other ways to control her hormones.
Birds are very sensitive to light, especially full-spectrum light (natural light or bulbs that simulate natural light). You have to use the light to simulate the Seasons (shorter days in Winter and longer days in Summer). If you want to trick your bird into thinking it's no longer egg-laying season, try reducing the amount of light she gets. Get a quiet place for her cage to be at night and keep it dark, cover it up with a dark sheet if you need to. Let her wake up late and go to bed early. She might be upset about this at first but she'll get used to the routine eventually.
If none of this helps, I think your best bet would be consulting with a vet for more advice or perhaps getting her a companion bird (doesn't have to be the same species if you don't want fertile eggs and baby birds to deal with, as long as the species are peaceful and compatible as companion birds. Obviously don't pair her up with an Indian Ringneck as they can be aggressive sometimes...).
Hope this helps you with Tinkerbell, she's such a cutie! :)

Thank you for your input! I will definitely take these points into consideration going forward. Things seem to have calmed down for now. Unfortunately for us we are not able to get a second bird and because Tink is having a lot of trouble she isn't physically able to lay eggs. We are still looking into it and have a follow up appointment with our avian vet soon. I will have another update then! Thanks again for your thoughts, I appreciate the help and suggestions!

That was really kind of you to write out all of the potential help for this issue!
My little guy...er, girl...just started laying me eggs too and I freaked out because she has the full blown bright blue eye shadow and blue rump.
I thought she just had some ‘gay’ tendencies😂
She doesn’t seem interested in the eggs much though. She alerted me that they were at the bottom of the cage, but after I removed them...she was like, meh...onto something else.
I’ve literally read contradicting advice from legit vets even- some say just let them drop to the floor, yet others insist on leaving them in the cage so she can complete the cycle.
I tired even putting a little hut inside her cage so she could just have them and be done...but she isn’t interested in that either.
She’s had 4 so far and I can see another one already in her, which idk how they manage since they’re not that tiny of eggs yet they are tiny birds!
I didn’t see how it could be possible to have 2 eggs in there at once, but after she shot one out, it was apparent there was another almost full size one ready in line next.
What I noticed the most was her behavior is totally different now- she’s like a different bird.
      I miss my little ‘boy’😳
I wonder if Tinkerbell here has stopped laying eggs?
If so, I’ll try whatever they did.
I’m just trying to find success stories so I can try them with my little guy...
      Er...girl.
      ✌️

Adorable Bird !! I would one day have a bird or two. Not any time soon. I have a male Lovebird so I do Not have Egg Problems. Bigger birds can put a hormone on their body so 4he birds body does not go into reproductive mode. I had a female. No makes around. A female & male who did not get to be together to get to a reproductive mode. They hated each other. The male Love bird would bite her feet. Towards the end they got along & did not fight. A larger birds they hung out . That bird had a bumble foot. Not right away. I saw what it was, on Facebook it said itesnt the bird 8s seriously I'll. Like a staff infection. I found out too late. My 2 Lovebirds I put collidial silver in their 2atet. One might, I thought, I will wait until the AM. Wrong move. The two lovebird diedy morning. That was after giving them Coldisl silver for 10 days. My friend did that for larger birds. That couple lived far away. I put the sick bird down. It said it could make me very sick. I did not want to take chances. One lady recently who has rescue birds got so sick from her bird that had some serious ailment. April. She has a blog. She had to have one heart surgery to stay alive & another 9ne 6o stay alive & I have not seen any you tube videos lately. Very serious matter. She was so dedicated. Too bad they can not just give a bird a pill like humans to no reproduce. Even a Historectomy. Maybe bad idea. That can be hard on a bird. Just thinking out of the box. I do love my birds I had & one I have now. I get very attached. Thank You for sharing. The Best to you in the Future with curbing Egg Production. Happy Birding.

Typical bird behavior.. hmm... My blue parrotlet never makes noise, she never plays with her toys, she's terrified of the color yellow (for some reason), i can NOT get her to try new foods, and i can't train her because she doesn't seem to like things enough, millet won't even work lol. She does like getting scritches, but when she's in her cage, she just sits there all day. Idk what to do but idk if that should be normal behavior lol

    • @DailyBark
      @DailyBark  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That doesn't sound super typical to me in my limited experience, but all birds are different. Maybe time for a vet check up just to be on the safe side? They might have some recommendations as well. :) Good luck!

Daily Bark Okay, thank you. She's been like that since I got her, but it also took me 2 months to "break her in", because she was in a cage in the back of the aviary for about 2 or 3 weeks (she was 10 weeks when I got her) and she wasn't used to people. I would hope she's normal, maybe just "different from other birds", but idk. Thanks anyway :)
