    Something to note: Keep in mind that I'm just a normal guy who loves cars. I'm not a trained mechanic, although my father was. If something interesting car wise comes up, I try to film it and upload it for entertainment and the "look at what I done" factor. Pat me on the back, or give me a "good game" pat on the butt. These videos are meant to inspire other DIYers. Working on cars can be dangerous, even life threatening, if the proper cautionary measurements aren't taken. You also run the risk of damaging your vehicle and or voiding your warranty. If for any reason you feel like the job is too big to handle, I would suggest consulting with a professional mechanic.

    I recently bought a Saturn Astra with a 1.8 ecotec and decided to give it to my son. I as wanting it to have more power than it has but disapointanly not finding anything on improving the 1.8! Fi Coming across you channel yesterday and watching your series to this point has not only be informative but entertaining. By the way I think that was the correct choice on your coil to plug solution Nice work Looking forward to the next video!

    I would try just standing the coils up on the plugs with the stock boots. Waters going to get in there anyway no matter what. The stock boots seal around the plugs to keep the water out. The stock coil and plastic cover is ment to let water boil and steam out when the motor is hot.

    Hey man it's lookin good! I can't wait to see the pistons!
    Just some food for thought. I was doing some research into pistons a while back, and found that the Toyota 2ZR-FE engine shares the same bore (80.5mm) and is only 0.1mm longer in stroke than the LUW (88.3mm vs 88.2mm). Wiseco makes a set of pistons for the 2ZR-FE that drop the C/R to 9:1. Standard, the 2ZR-FE has 10:1 C/R and the LUW has 10.5:1.
    I didn't know if anyone more mechanically inclined than I am could shed some light on the idea of the 2ZR-FE pistons fitting in the LUW. I'm comfortable around cars, but not mixing and matching internal parts that aren't designed for it lol.
    Thanks again SO MUCH for these videos! Peace out with ya piece out!!

    • @cmattdabrat
      @cmattdabrat  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Shouldn't be much longer on the pistons!
      That should put the piston only .003 down in the hole, which won't change CR a whole lot.
      Having said that, there's a few things to consider when it comes to pistons. The wrist pin size, the distance from the top of the piston to the centerline of the wrist pin, pin location relative the the oil rings (not as big of a deal..), and the distance from the crown of the piston to the first compression ring. I'm not that familiar with the 2ZR, but valve reliefs as well, and camshaft lift. Let's say everything is within the same spec, but the cam has more lift not allowing enough clearance between the piston and valves.
      If everything is within spec, then it could be a viable option, but may be a crap shoot for a good amount of coin.
      All things considered, a custom set isn't really that much more than something off the shelf. It's just that wait time that's a killer. lol

      On a side note, for modern day engines running boost, 9.5:1 would be better, even 10 to make more power and you could still do it on pump gas. 8.5-9:1 is kinda an old school way of thinking when it comes to boost, but with port or direct injection, not so much. Pair that up with really being able dial in spark timing based on cylinder air mass, and engine speed, you can tune the engine to run max timing under different load scenarios. Unlike carbs, and a distributor setup with a spring, which is basically set to a sweep and your pretty limited on timing adjust (how fast total timing comes on) what total the total timing is, and initial or idle timing. So IMO, that's why it's kinda an old school way of thinking to lower the CR for boost to keep detonation / knock at bay.

  • @a2cryss

    Could the coils be tilted to the left instead of to the right? What about aluminum for the plate? Looks sweet though.

    • @cmattdabrat
      @cmattdabrat  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It definitely could be made out of aluminum. Only concern is how well aluminum threads would hold up to the vibration of the engine. They’re currently pointing towards the wiring harness to keep it as short as possible, but I don’t see why they couldn’t be turned the other direction.
