Harry Yee's classic version of this drink is by far my favorite cocktail. sometime's i'll switch things up (coconut rum is one of my favorite subs) but i always come back to the original. thanks for the recipe and history!
Such a great channel. We just got back from Waikiki and loved the blue Hawaii cocktail and we wanted to make it at home. I’m so glad we stumbled across your channel, it’s just pure enjoyment learning and mixing with you. Thank you 🙏
Hey! I’ve been around 😎 Thanks for subscribing and commenting. If you liked this episode check out the Tropical Itch and Hot Buttered Rum episodes. They tie into Harry Yee as well. Keep checking back lots more on the way! Cheers!
What a phenomenal video!!! I love your style, music, education of the drink and the creator, and the pictures of the hotel!! Love your video tricks over the mixing of the drink! I shall try this drink when I can get the ingredients. The sour mix - can that be made from scratch? What would you suggest. I truly enjoyed this video. Blessings.
I love the information you provide on various liqueurs when you use them, i just want to add something about the curacao though, only one brand (senior curacao) is actually still made on curacao and using the laraha orange. all others do not use the laraha orange from the island of curacao, and are all made using other oranges or artificial flavoring. its hard to find but if you can get ahold of it, the senior curacao is absolutely fantastic.
I didn't know that about Senior Curacao. It sounds like an iconic liqueur that I need to try. Just one more thing to add to my list of alcohol essentials. Ha... I find the Liquor Control Board here where I live really fixed on what it chooses to bring into the country. There are so many great products out there that I just can't get my hands on. Personally, as far as Bols Blue Curacao is concerned, I am not a huge fan. It's too sweet and definitely has an artificial taste. But, the colour is fantastic. I guess that's why I use it even though it's laced with horrible blue dye. For me, it almost ranks up there with how much I love Peach Schnapps. If you follow my show, you know what I mean. Thanks so much for sharing. Cheers!
Made something like that the other day without knowing the name. 2 Flor de Caña-4 white Rum, 1 Dry Curaçao, 3 Pineapple juice, .5 Lime juice. Delicious and refreshing. I had pineapple juice where the pulp settled out so it was pretty clear. And then I strained it.
I figured out a way to keep it more blue. When pineapple juice sits for a while it separates into a deep yellow, cloudy portion on the bottom and a clear, light yellow portion on top. I use the clear, light-colored portion in a Blue Hawaii. The drink definitely comes out more blue, turquoise to be exact. I also prefer this shaken.
+Boston Strong Harry Yee's daughter reached out to me via my Facebook page. Harry is still alive and doing well. Can you believe that! I'll be paying tribute to him in an episode airing September for his birthday. How cool is that!?
Awesome recipe and it doesn't demand hard to get ingredients. Some bartenders do not realize that outside of the US it is not as easy to get, for a reasonable price and in regular shops, certain spirits. Thanks Bruce and keep 'em coming!
Now, I'm old enough (sadly) that during my military time (IN Hawaii, I might add) that I happened to ENCOUNTER Harry Yee at the end of his career...and LOVED the ever-popular Blue Hawaiian...but when I drank the ones that HE MADE, they were over LARGE cubes, mixed in a pitcher, minimal (if any) orange juice/fruit juice, and they were VERY CLEAR...translucent...and tasted VERY MUCH like the blue 'icey push-up treats' that kids enjoy in the summer...in fact, other than the blatant RUM taste, they could double for that blue icey kid's treat! The ones HE MADE were rum-based...and was why I'd go to the Hawaiian Village for his when off-duty...because everyone else's tasted like PAINT THINNER (I despise most vodka drinks...except for Spicy Bloody Mary's).
By the way...for ANYONE who likes a Screwdriver, try a 'Rum Sunset'...it's basically a Rum-based Screwdriver with 2-tbsp's of Grenadine added...AMAZING IMPROVEMENT on the Screwdriver!!!
A nice personal piece of info there Skeeter. Thanks for sharing. I would like to visit Hawaii one day. Spicy Bloody Mary's are tasty. Bloody Caesars are very tasty too. Actually, May 14th was National Caesar Day here in Canada. Cheers!
@@BarTalkCocktails well with the drewry sunless wet winter we have been having a nice sunshine in a glass would be perfect!!! I'm making a shopping list for the Easter Island cocktail you made.
I tried to make this tonight for the first time, I'm really amateur. Most of my family gave me a thumbs up only one person told me they liked it but that it tasted too sour? So any advice on what to alter to pull that back, all I could think of was less sour mix but idk if will alter it too much? Thank you for your videos :) cheers
Using less sweet and sour mix will help with the sour tang. You could also increase the blue curaçao for additional sweetness. Just keep experimenting. You'll find the right combination of ingredients to suit your guests' palate. Cheers!
@@BarTalkCocktails thank you do much I will definitely try you're advice and thank you for the content, as an amateur it helps to have you explain each drink at a leisurely pace that I can follow along with :) cheers!!🤙
It’s not my favourite stuff as I have an old palate but once and awhile it sure does hit the spot. Did you try this recipe? Cheers and thanks for watching!
I never gave it much thought, but now you've piqued my curiosity. I think you're on to something here. I'll let you know. Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers!
Hey love to see your videos ,but hey have you ever come across a drink called...the old timer and if you have can you make a video on how to make one ,some body told me about it ,that is a very tasty drink ,but haven't found anything on it ??thanks in advance.
There are a few versions of the Old Timer Cocktail. Often made with rye or bourbon whiskey, it's sometimes made with brandy too. They all have completely different taste profiles. I'll have to put it on my to-do list. Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers!
That Hawaiian music is stock music from a stock music service. If you're looking for Hawaiian music search for Hawaiian Steel Guitar. There's lots of good stuff out there.
@@BarTalkCocktails Thanks I will do. Love the sound and always looking for some more stuff to add to my music collection. It reminds of of spongebob or Santo and Johnny, even a guitarist I know named dick dale invented “surf” guitar, not sure how into the genre you are but that tropical feeling is never a bad one. If you wanted to check any out I’d recommend Sleepwalk by Santo and Johnny if you don’t already know it of course.
@@adambromley6972 Yeah, we just lost Dick Dale last year. He was 81. He certainly was a big influence on many guitarists. And the song Sleepwalk, I forgot about that one. I remember hearing it when I was a kid. Everybody and their brother has covered it but, the original is still pretty sweet.
Did Harry make a book on his method and recipes?Im curious because I bought books from Don the beach comber and Trader Vic and wanted to really get my Tiki knowledge down
Sorry, Harry never made a book of his cocktail recipes, at least to my knowledge. However, you will find a few of his recipes in some cocktail books. Most of his work is lost to history. I am in touch with Harry's daughter, Marilyn. She has been working on retrieving some of Harry's long lost recipes. Places, people, recipes, all that sort of thing. At 101 years old, Harry has a lot of remembering to do. This could take a little while. Cheers!
My bar does a martini riff on this, we swap vodka for all rum. I always disliked Curacao just because I find the color off-putting, but it does make a tasty drink.
If I have someone who tells me they want something sweet and summery I point them in that direction and they always enjoy it. Usually results in someone else at the table ordering one.
I know exactly what you're talking about. Once you serve one, there's always someone else at the table that wants one too... and then a third person. I sometimes wish they would order them all at once. It would make the job easier. Cheers, Dylan.
+Darren Maybee I always buy it on line. My favourite brand is Small Hand Foods out of California - www.smallhandfoods.com Another one from Oregon is B.G. Reynolds. It's also hand crafted but I don't like it as much as Small Hand Foods. I'll get back to you on making it from scratch. I don't have a recipe off hand but I'll look for one and can totally make it in a future episode :) Cheers and thanks for continuing to tune in!
That's a tough one. Without alcohol the Blue Hawaii is simply pineapple juice and sweet and sour mix. You could try making my Blueberry Lavender Syrup. That would turn it blue but your drink wouldn't taste like a Blue Hawaii. Another thought is to add some butterfly pea flower powder. It's a natural food coloring.
Thank you! I am a new subscriber and love the stories behind the drinks. I'm actually getting ready to do a ladies night for my wife and her friends. So Of what I've watched so far, I'm going Blue Hawaii for the main beverage. We usually do just a large container of one type of mixed drink and it seems appropriate for summer so here goes! Cheers!
