I thought this trick didn't work correctly at first for all combinations of favorite number choices. Then I realized that the LAST instruction that "you" have to give your "friend" varies depending on the number that "you" chose. You need to tell your friend to subtract an amount equal to 10 minus the number that you chose. So if your number is 1 (for example) you tell your friend to "Subtract 9" (because 10 - your number = 9). And if your # is 3 you must tell your friend to "Subtract 7" ... and so on. You can do this on the last instruction to your friend because you know what your number is even though your friend does not. If you do this the trick will work with any combination of numbers from 1 - 9 that you and your friend choose.

Now add 2 to your answer. Multiply this number by 5. Now subtract 8 from your answer. The answer right now is _2, where _ is the number you chose at the beginning. If you had chosen 7, the answer you would have right now is 72. If you had chosen 4, the answer you have is 42 and so on. Hope this makes it clear. To relate this to my previous comment, a is whatever number you chose, the "b" I chose was 2.
