  • The Expanse has lots of history and lore, and for the most part there is no alien life, the Sol system is home to a myriad of new cultures evolved from those familiar human ones we have here today with all the same issues that brings. This video looks at the lore of the Belters and their way of life among the rocks and stations of the outer planets.
    This is the Cultural Index a series aimed at exploring various Science-Fiction species.
    For outsiders to a series to get to know the basics and maybe even hardened Sci-fi nuts might discover something new.

    Of course I want more The Expanse, it's *"the only"* one with the lore as good as Trek (well, Stargate too, but for that, we have GateWorld already), so we do need more The Expanse, because most of other channels focus on technology, you could say Templin would focus on lore but they're too broad, in here we get a much more detailed scene, so yeah, more.

      I'd say The Expanse lore is generally a lot better.
      There is just a whole lot less of it when compared to more popular Sci Fi franchises, as they are... Franchises.
      The expanse is fairly hard science fiction (well besides protomolecule etc), which it archives not only by being set in the near future, but also by just putting more effort into making a consistent world.

      @@MihzvolWuriar There are quite a few Sci-Fi Universes with extremely good Lore out there, but most of them are rather niche topics. One that is excellent and hopefully will get its own show one day is Battletech (you might also know it as Mechwarrior or Mechcommander).

      If you like this kind of space Sci-fi that tries to keep the science as close to reality as possible, I definetly recommend "For All Mankind". It only recently began to gain a lot of an attention and the 3rd season just ended (with more to come). In short without spoling (beyond the promotional description provided for the pilot) is about alternate reality where USSR beats the US to put man on the Moon and the space race never ended. This is probably the closest quality TV show (I would say even equal) to the Expanse for space, scientific realism and politics. In a way For All Mankind is like a prequel to The Expanse, even tho they are not in the same universe, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was inspired by The Expanse.

    It's a shame that the expanse seems to be at an end, at least for now.
    But better that kind of end than what GoT got.
    I'd appreciate more Expanse lore, I think while it's sparse compared to eg. Star Trek, it is usually of higher quality (to be fair it can stick closer to what we know, but it lead to an effort to stay consistent that lacks in most franchises).

    I don’t think we’ll get any more Expanse anytime soon but I’m pretty confident that we will at some point in the future. There’s more untapped storyline in the books and Alcon Entertainment has been so good at adapting the books for TV and streaming and I think I remember several of the actors saying they hope and think that they will return to the roles and they all seem to get along so well. i just really hope we haven’t seen the last episode of the Expanse.

It's too bad the first season is a bit of a slog that some see as hard to get through because it's the best sci fi series ever. Even more so than Star Trek or Doctor Who, IMO.

      You are going to love the last 3 books since they take place after the show. The show only portrays the first five books but for a good reason. There is a chance those later books can be adapted keeping the same actors(minus one). Some stuff is different in the books but nothing really bugged me, I think they did a fantastic job

      I'd recommend the whole book series, including all the short stories. While the show is based on the books, the universe and characters have a lot of nuanced (and sometimes not-so-nuanced) differences. And if you don't have time to read books (I often don't), the audio books (narrated by the talented Jefferson Mays), are amazing. I basically listened to the whole book series on my commute to/from work.

    Larry Niven had an interesting take on Belter society in his Known Space books. Lots of little cultural quirks, not just their own patois but things like using drugs to fully depilate themselves (shed hair is hell on life support) and their spacesuits being their most prized possession, always well-maintained, regularly upgraded, and heavily decorated with individualized artwork.

      Rampant overpopulation of Earth, where a large part of the population is on basic minimum assistance. If the Belters refuse to work, send the Navy and Marines to dispose of the riffraff and then ship over the dregs of Earth and Mars society to do the job.
      It'd be a very powerful statement to those who are being forced to work after killing the belters. "this'll happen to you if you refuse to work".

    • @kaitlyn__L

      That’s ultimately the same tension that exists today among all productive workers and their bosses really! It’s just exaggerated and dramatised with the space locale, since not only do you have to pay for heat and electricity and transport, but also even for air in space.

    • @joseaguilar3323

      They rely on their resources but the Belt is divided by different ideologies and methods. Half the OPA hates the other half. Once they unite, they get to a point where they are a legitimate faction against the other two powers but past grudges threatens to dissolve them.

    Ceres being the capital of the belt was more or less a wink to Dune by Corey than anything else I think. He makes several direct and indirect references to Herbert's books throughout the Expanse and I think Ceres as a capital for one of the human cultures living off World feels a lot like a wink to Ceres being the Imperial Seat of Humans before being destroyed and expanding beyond our system.

    You were quite “diplomatic” in your description of Belters as “just human too, and prone to all the same flaws.” Throughout the series, aside from a few notable exceptions (eg Naomi, Camina Drummer, Ashford, Prax, Miller), what Fred Johnson is told of the Belters is generally true: “Just because someone has been oppressed, you can’t assume they’re ‘right,’ or even that they’re ‘good’ people.” Throughout the series, most Belters are represented as prone to violence; criminally minded; prejudiced; anti-intellectual; dishonest; fractious; and even genocidal…It is difficult to sympathise with them in the extreme.

    Does this show have a plot? Seemed supernatural element gone wrong in 1st season then switched completely to political crap between 3 main groups. Great look, good acting, unintelligible boring story. I have tried so hard to care about this but ....

    • @kaitlyn__L
      @kaitlyn__L 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It does have a plot, and it’s intertwined quite heavily with the alien technology gone awry, but there is also a lot about the politics. Each season ultimately has its own different feel, season 1 is a noire mystery, season 2 is a political thriller, 3 is a trapped in a storm story, 4 is a space western frontier town, 5 has everyone going home and exploring their past, while 6 ties it all together and puts a cap on the situation. But if you find the space-geopolitical stuff completely boring, then you may not ever come to jive with the show - big-picture politics is always relevant even in the smaller stories (and it’s there even in season 1, just more name-dropped without context on the first time through).

    • @10-OSwords
      @10-OSwords 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kaitlyn__L Yeah that was another thing, so many names so many characters I couldn't keep track . I think it's really well done I just can't figure out who anybody is or why I should care (like the space marine gal, it seemed like her part was a one & done but she's still around & I don't know why...). I wish they would have stuck with the alien tech story full force because that's how it started & maybe I could've followed the plot easier. I don't know, I'm probably just not paying enough attention.

    • @kaitlyn__L
      @kaitlyn__L 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@10-OSwords Bobbie becomes much more important in season 3 through 6. IIRC they wanted to bring her into season 1 like with Avasarala but didn’t have the budget.
      Though with all of Avasarala’s politicking is part of why it’s all so busy. Perhaps you’d prefer the books, each part of the story is told more linearly rather than jumping around quite so much. (Though that means a lot more timeline overlap between some of them.)
      FWIW The blue goo is still very important from about midway through season 2 until all the way until the end of season 4, and then it continues a little bit in season 6 but that’s more about stuff which the books go into further because there’s a time skip the TV show didn’t do. Seasons 3.5 and 4 are probably my favourite, and they also feature those elements the heaviest.
      But also, y’know, it’s okay to find a TV show impenetrable or to bounce off it for any reason. And I don’t think you need necessarily disparage yourself about that! Like, I also like Mad Men partly because there’s a lot of subtlety and intertwining plot threads which might leave seasons between instalments. Most people don’t piece together certain elements until, like, 6 rewatches in. And a lot of people find that completely insufferable and that’s totally fine!

    • @10-OSwords
      @10-OSwords 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kaitlyn__L :) yeah my main issue is I don't pay enough attention. I game & I just listen to shows I don't really watch them, but I like the quality of this so maybe I'll go back one day & rewatch the whole thing but you seem to have it all down so let me ask you this: what was with the gates they found? I mean A) was it related to the element & B) did they do something with them further? Because I think I saw them discovered then the next episode it was like nothing happened...if I remember correctly.

      I’m a huge Star Trek fan but The Expanse needs more love. It’s got so much effort put into its setting, and it’s very coherent. Plus, the physics are mostly “hard”, ie realistic, which I find neat - a lot of the moments of tension come from real phenomena rather than a fictional energy surge. Inertia throwing people around the ship who didn’t get strapped-in in time, for instance. Their flight paths always take into account the actual orbital paths, rather than being straight lines. If a ship doesn’t want to be seen, it can avoid lighting its main drive, which is also how it works in real life. I could go on
