  • I was born and raised in Japan. Japan is an island country. We cannot walk
to the neighboring countries. There is always sea.
The sea has been a barrier separating us from outside.
But once we watch this from another point of view, our transportation to go to another country has always been a ship over 1000 years. It can be said the sea is the way to connect us.
The sea for me is SHO, so called Japanese, Chinese calligraphy.
My life has always been with SHO since I was 7 years old. It seems to be a barrier between this oriental, traditional culture and modern lives or foreign people. But SHO is a great art. Art can connect people by moving their hearts. It is my lifework to connect people beyond time and places.
I made this film dance to practice this belief.
I understand both dance and SHO are the arts of rhythm. I believe I can express the important aspects of our traditional art in film dance.
What is rhythm? I attempted lots of comparisons to seek the answer to this question through this film.
    + Stillness x Motion
    + Sensitiveness x Powerfulness
    + Universe x Chaos
    + Monotone x Colorful
    + Fiction x Reality
    + Sacred x Profane
+ Calm music x Upbeat music
The filming location was Mexico. It lies very far from Japan geographically. In addition, these countries have big difference in people’s general images; Japan: calm, Mexico: full of energy. Mexico was the ideal location for this film.
