I'm sorry but I don't have these issues and I have the same setup pretty much. No overheating or anything. The twist screw I've never once had an issue with that either. Nothing melts and when I have that propac, I'm around 1/2 almost all the time. The "cheap" lights have great improvements and totally work flawless for me. I mean if you or anyone hates them, I'm taking donations lol. Godox for the win for me and I've used Neewer since it's inception.

I work with Godox V1, and they definitely do overheat - in Summer. That means a lower firing frequency, maybe pop out the battery during a break, but that’s about it. One replacement battery on board. I mostly don’t go beyond 1/2

I love godox speed lights. The v1 series plus the ad200s are my favorite traveling lights. In studio I love my 1200 packs and heads. Good stuff. I switched from Profoto. I really loved Profoto but during the pandemic I ended up selling mine off and slowly moving more to godox. Maybe by the end of the year I will be fully godox. My main reason is I love the quick soft box series (orange softbox) and the 1200 packs.

Im an Elinchrom Shooter since 2014... and i recently bought the AD300 PRO Dual Kit, because i needed a super light flash kit for outdoors.. the Elinchrom ONE was way to expensive for me right now... i have to say that im really impressed by godox.

      @@kenbot77
      The Good:
      - Price on units and accessories (obviously)
      - Light Quality (In color mode, its ok for outdoor use. More cooler temperature than elinchrom do)
      - Decent Flash Durations on the AD300 Pro (they all are IGBT transitor controlled flashes, spect using them in 1/4 power onwards)
      - Size of the units. (you can fit 2 AD300 PRO and 1 AD200 PRO with accesories in a camera backpack, and still room for a Camera body and 3 lenses. Amazing.)
      - Ease of setup. (once you learn all the walkarrounds, they are as fast and putting on a tripod and turn them on)
      The Bad:
      - Build Quality its kinda Flimpsy. Not everything fits tighly like the Swiss made brands.
      - AD300 PRO modeling light its almost useless. To dim.
      - Batteries drain even when the unit are OFF. For storage you need to remove the batteries on the flash units and the trigger.
      - Menus are confusing and the printed instruction manuals are garbage. (You will end up consulting youtube review videos)
      - The incluedad bracket on the AD200 PRO and the AD300 PRO barely holds anything, its garbage too. Use the S2 Bracket insted.
      - Xpro Trigger has some gliches when you have TTL groups enable and there is no TTL unit on that group.
      - The Xpro Trigger its really power hungry. It drains the batteries in 2 days of shooting easily. My Elincrhom Pro trigger in the other hand last more than a month of use.
      The Unknow:
      - Repair Services? (Elinchrom doesnt have many repair centers in the american continent, only 3 places. But at least I had options, an repairing its cheap and efective. Dont Know anyhting about Godox Services)
You get what you paid for... it has some walkarrounds.. but in good hands gets the job done. The light quaility to price ratio its hard to beat.

Godox has become the de facto standard for event photographers now. The Godox V1 is basically a Profoto A10 knock off and paired with the modifier kit even an amateur like me has produced great results. Much better than when I had my Nikon F100 and sb28 shooting bare and blind. Those photos were shocking and I stayed away from flash photography for years because of it.

Another alternative with better light is to get the Godox AD200pro along with the bulb extender. This way you can hang the battery pack on your light stand and put the very small and ultra light head on a coldshoe attached to the light stand. Gives you more options as you can now use a bare bulb.
You can use it as on camera flash and put the battery pack in your pocket. Hehe

My V860ii set up needed one mod to make it usable for me...a sticker with an arrow reminding me which way to spin the collar to loosen the trigger. The newer Godox stuff works cross brand too, seamless across EF digital, EF film, and Fuji X which is really handy. Rechargeable battery is mega as well, paid £100 used for one V860ii with XT1 trigger, no brainer for that price.

Back in my day (1980s), it was the Vivitar 285HV or the 283, for us news shooters. Sure Nikon and Canon as well as Minolta, and Pentax had their branded speed lights, but for some reason (at least in the Photojournalism arena) seemingly we all gravitated to the aforementioned Vivitar flashes. Before moving from Canon to Fuji after almost 36 years, Canon finally began to develop several decent speed lights by the mid-90s, though Nikon still ruled the roost in the speed light department. My last Canon flash was the venerable 580EX II. Moving to Fuji, the one big negative (aside from AF) was the lack of a decent flash system. Nissin is their current supplier of flashes, many branded as Fujifilm. The lack of features and outrageous cost forced me to look elsewhere, while I was reluctant at first to give Godox a shot (no pun intended), I was impressed. The V860IIIF has won me over, an outstanding flash. Looks like Godox is becoming the Vivitar of the 21st Century.

I think the cheap 3rd party speedlights have improved quite a bit, for instance the Yongnuo 600exII has overheat protection, the same connection mechanism as the Canon as you mentioned, and is still a fraction of the price. I'm sure the Canon can shoot for longer at full power without overheating, but you get what you pay for.

I have been in this journey. I have used Godox, Elinchroms, profoto and Brons. I have heavily invested in Godox system. Unfortunately I have very bad experience with Profot and Brons and their service is the worst. I have had issues of breaking handles of Brons and also electrocuting power packs. It was very absurd to see some of these premium brands fail mid shoot. I dont think I will ever prefer going to these brands again.
On the contrary, I never expected anything from Godox but it delivered the most and very reliable and top notch in service. Elinchroms are the backups as they are slight expensive to maintain but they are reliable too.

I use the Ilux V860 (still owning the Canon 580 and 580ll) after buying one at Photokina years ago now. The battery (Li-on) failed pretty quickly but the dealer replaced them as there was a known fault and basically they were binned. Replacement batteries were "Godox" Li-on (VB18) and they just worked, every time and lasted for an age. I now see Ilux has been replaced by Godox so that is nice to know. Had the flash for years and it has been given serious use and never an issue. MY Canon flashes are in the bag simply as a standby or as stand alone Pocket Wizard stand mounted units to cover the dance floor at weddings. That is about the only time I use them now. The Ilux, now Godox, are not "cheap" but considering the cost of the equivalent Canon units they are a bargain. Finally, I still do have that shoulder mounted power unit, lol. It hangs on lighting stand attached to a Canon 580. Cannot remember the last time I used it. If you are in need of a good flashgun then the Godox units should be on a short be considered, or just go and buy it.

  • @CanadianArchivist
    @CanadianArchivist ปีที่แล้ว +14

I have two Yongnuo and the off camera triggers. They do work well for me. I haven’t had them overheat.
The difference between Yongnuo and Godox is the fact that Yongnuo doesn’t have studio monolights like Godox does( I haven’t seen any). . With Godox, their triggers work across their whole ecosystem .
Both brands are a fraction of the price of the main camera brands. So you can buy two or three at the sane cost of one camera brand. The quality is getting better.
To prevent breaking the hot shoe in any speedlites, I purchased the Godox S Mount bracket which has bowens mounts. They keep the speedlite central to the modifier instead of on a coldshoe mounted on a stand. More balanced and secure

    • @wikrap1
      @wikrap1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

And Godox strobes don't freeze totally when You have poor batteries in the trigger unit. Had massive problems with Yongnuo lights and in need to power-cycle all the lamps multiple times to get the shots and the reason appears to be AA rechargeables Changed to alkaline which gives slightly higher voltage and system becomes quite stable, but I could not trust it 100% knowing it can freeze if batteries goes a little lower. Godox system seems to be more robust and they have bigger strobes also. Prices are so close that I see no point in getting into Yongnuo flash system at this point.

I appreciate your review of the V860iii and its mechanical superiority to predecessors; at least on the more conspicuous points. But the devil is in the details, and all modern photographic gear has complex electronics. I am a 70 y.o. electronics engineer, reviving my old hobby of photography. I am invested in Sony APS-C camera bodies and Godox illumination components. Recently I acquired a much-celebrated-on-TH-cam Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN portrait lens that takes ultra-sharp pictures. High Speed Sync, meanwhile, remains an indispensible tool of modern creative photography. So does "reacting quickly" and that means I no longer shoot in full manual mode, as I had with film cameras and my beloved Zeiss lenses. Enough background... I found a flawed combination and it is caused by a "failure to communicate" ... electronically... between differently-branded components. When I shoot in TTL-mode, HSS images are burned by full light output by the V860iii; when my Sony a6400 camera has the V860iii speedlight in the camera's hot shoe. A Sony SEL18135 (zoomable) lens never had this problem, and still does not have this problem. At first I suspected "inadequate design" in the Sigma 56mm lens, as it was bought only a few days ago, while my speedlight is 11 months into its duty atop my camera. Then I replaced the speedlight with a wireless transmitter (Godox X2T) in the hot shoe ... so as to activate any and all illuminators wirelessly. Sigma 56mm lens in use. No more burned images. That means the X2T could, indeed, communicate with camera and lens, thereby instructing the illuminators (wirelessly) to throttle light output.
Again, the devil is in the details, and no equipment review is complete until many combinations of gear and modes of operation have been attempted. Now I will exercise my right of merchandise exchange, with Godox, which provided me with a one year manufacturer's warranty.

stumbled upon this video while searching for reviews. i used nikon SB800s back in the day, pretty much the competitor to canons 580s, great to hear that these are worthy replacements for the old era. one more bad thing about batteries: my SB800s would still work if i didn't forget the batteries inside, the fluid ran out and killed all of the electronics. that's something you won't see with Li-ion batteries (unless they explode, but that's far less common i guess).
just a tip for your video: please put your monitor closer to the camera, it gets so distracting if you want to talk to the camera, check yourself and look 1m above the viewer.

From Speedotron, Elinchrom, Profoto & even Broncolor, hands down for the price I will take a Godox AD600Pro any day over those others! They are what I am currently using and simply love them. They work just as good if not better than the Profoto & Broncolor kits I’ve used. If your client is looking at what lighting & camera kit you are using then they are judging you on the wrong stuff. Used Ad600's for nearly a decade now. Never let me down and help me build a successful commercial photo business and travelled in hard cases all over the globe.. No complaints like many others! One major positive of the Ad600's too is that if the bulb blows you can walk into most camera shops and replace it. Profoto (foto??? really!?) on the other hand (aside from their ridiculous price) want you send it back to their service agents to replace at a cost. Ridiculous! Godox work just fine. Saying that, when it comes to using speedlites on camera I use Canon branded flashes as they have never let me down. Would I use a cheaper Godox? Who knows as i've never had any experience with them on camera.

However, if one of them is on my camera (Canon), the ISO goes into auto (without me changing it), and the flash power changes settings even in manual mode. If I put a Canon brand light on the camera, the settings don’t jump around on their own. Thankfully there’s some good deals on used Canon lights.

Important note if you have Godox: the hotshoes are not as good as it looks in terms of strength, they break quite often... And you can not buy them in europe, is like 10e but it takes a few weeks, so you better have some spareparts. Is very easy to change, but V1 (their top of the line speedlight) is sadly easy to break inside and block himself...

I was told it is kinda by design by Sony/Godox. The hotshoe is only 4 screws to replace. The sony hotshoe is digital with delicate pins and they rather have the flash sheer off before the pins break. A lot of flashes on sony have plastic hotshoes. Only one i found so far that doesn't is profoto. Where as other systems like nikon are "dumb" hotshoes that are a big hunk of metal.
Sonys hot shoe is proprietary and delicate with imo not much extra value from the digitalness.
Now that i understand the reasons i feel a bit better but it still sucks that its so weak i can't even finish a shoot without issues.

@@snaphappy7530 well, I dont know sony hotshoe, but canon hotshoe is solid and still have this problem. The breaking poing is inside the hotshoe in the flash, where the screws should be hold. It looks like they tried to save too much plastic and it became too weak.

I have so far only used a Godox V1. I really like it, but certain parts just seem rather flimsy. The jog dial for one, and the trigger… Sue, it’s light weight, but I don’t know. The connection between the two also seems to be a miracle to get to work, but maybe I’m just too lame to learn the bit unintuitive interface all the way, over and over. Colour consistency seems ok, power output too and the batteries are great and don’t break the bank. Seems like you get the entire flash for the price of a Canon battery 😅

I used to have an elinchrom set of two 500w strobes, trigger and softboxes. Also had a canon speedlite. Then I bought à Godox v860ii (the li-on battery isa great feature) coupled with an xpro trigger. The quality, ergonomics and consistency are just unmatched in this price range. Have a pair of Godox Qs400wii paired with the v860ii. Again the quality and usability are way better than Elinchrom. The unreliable Elinchrom speedring used to drive me crazy and still remains a mistery to me. The default elinchrom radio trigger was so cheap and flimsy compared to the superb robust xpro. Not to mention the Bowens mount I really like. I've just purchased another Godox speedlite v6860iii. I"d never use another brand, would never go back to elinchrom either. I tried updated versions of elinchrom 500w with their new trigger but frankly Godox is still one step beyond. Thank you Godox ! ✌✌✌

Go Dogs in Chinese is really called God Ox - Holy Cow.
Not dirt cheap any more, reasonably consistent in colour temperature and flash duration - in today's Profoto league I'd guess.
And extremely opaque about their Joules.
Bron solved this over 40 years ago, Profoto in the past 10 years.
Another thing is that your 2,000 Watt kettle may burn through 10 kilo.Watt.hours (kWh) per month making all that English tea.
If you don't know the difference between W and kWh that's a problem.
    Kilo=1,000 and hour=3,600 seconds so 1 kWh = 3,600,000 Watt.seconds=W.s=Joules=J.
    They're not Watts - power.
    But energy consumption.

The Godox are ok and the batteries are amazing, BUT. They break way too easily I've had 5-6 of them. The Sony ones the foot of the flash is made from very cheap plastic and break very easily. You can at long last but metal feet which address this problem. With all my Sony cameras and all my Godox flashes when you turn the flash on it's rare for the camera to recognise the flash first time. So normally I would turn the flash on then off then on and the camera would then recognise the flash. Another problem I've had with them is they like to randomly fire at full power. So if you had a bride walking down the aisle one shot would be at full power meaning you had to wait 1.7 seconds to shoot again. Not ideal on a short aisle. Another problem is they are useless at off camera ETTL under f4, I know how odd. So I have gone to Sony branded flashes which are great apart from they use AA batteries. I have kept my Godox AD200 as thats a unique tool.

In the last 5-10 years Godox has come a long way, and by the way they manufacturer the wireless triggers for Broncolor, the hardware is Godox and the firmware is Broncolor.
Broncolor is undoubtedly the best, not only the strobes but also the modifiers. You could say that Broncolor is 100, Profoto & Elincrome are 95 and Godox is in the low 90’s; Godox’s strength is in the price and being just shy of being on par with Elincrome & Profoto, as well as having as many third party modifiers as conceivable with the Bowen’s mount.
In the studio and no budget issues Broncolor all the way, for everting else I choose Godox, with the price of one of the others strobes I can buy at least 4 Godox, if one breaks I can easily bin it without crying. Finally I would never buy a strobe that doesn’t have a bare bulb.

Off-topic warning, this one is about strobes rather than speedlites, sorry!
After using Elinchrom for over a decade, and then being exposed to all the hype about Godox I decided I was surely missing a trick by not going to Godox myself. So I was building a collection of Godox strobes and speedlites. The appeal was that I could easily control their power with the remote triggers (and I was also saving a packet), however, after using Elinchrom I was surprised with the poor build quality of Godox strobes... it really felt like a backward step but I ignored my hunch as surely this was the future! My last strobe was at the time relatively new DP600III, being the latest model this felt more decent, but I accidentally broke the flash tube and I found no-one could supply me a replacement, not Godox (ridiculously their support was literally non-existent) or Essential Photo and literally nothing online (I did order a part for that model from China but it was incompatible). So in disgust I ended up selling my Godox strobes and reverted back to my Elinchrom strobes, I decided it was preferable to buy used Elinchrom than new Godox. Where possible I also prefer not to buy Chinese products due to China's stance on human rights, so although yes Godox's product quality may be improving (if not totally up to scratch), and yes they are cheaper... I am happily staying with Elinchrom strobes for the foreseeable future - even if I have to pay more.
