  • The 35A Extension is our third project series and looks back at a single-storey extension that Roger worked on many years ago.
    In Part 1 we look at turning a load of bricks and concrete into rubble with a hired in Micro Crush and the groundworks that take us up to preparation for the beam & block floor.

    I did a job one time, was deep in a foundation hole with drains poking out at head height; we told the occupants not to use the crapper for a couple of hours while we make adjustments to the pipework. Well, we heard the woosh of water coming down the 4 storey pipe and next thing we were being shot with shit pellets. Good times.

      Thanks. I am not anti pump but when we did this job they were on massive great trucks. The mini pump on the back of a Transit was not around. Also we had the dumper truck paid for so why not make it work? We were about saving the pennies then. Come to think of it we still are though it is now difficult to bring an extension in under £80,000 . Everyone wants £180 per day minimum and the brickies and plasterers want £220.00. Good luck to them but it all mounts up

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      That neighbour was one of the biggest bastards I have ever had the displeasure to meet. He made the whole job miserable. He wanted us to put that manhole inside the extension wall so he could get access to it. It was war from day one and, at one point, he assaulted the bricklayer. In the end we buried him under the patio but that's just between you and me.

      Pumping is good but when we did this job there were no mini pumps so you had to have a big one and that was over £300 for the morning. We had the dumper on hire and it is a small job so we decided to use it. Now you can get mixers with built in pumps so we often use those.

      Wayne Leone
      Hi Wayne
      I the U.K it is not the done thing to use rebar in domestic foundations of this sort. In many other parts of the world they do but then they tend not to dig as deep. We dig down to something firm, which can be 2 metres especially if there are trees around.
      Later in this build you will see where we changed the whole design of the foundations and built in a ground beam to take the back end of the house because we weren't happy with the way it had been drawn. We had a really useless architect (more of that later) and he failed to spot several things that he should have.
