  • In this video, I go over my Roundhouse Shay that I purchased from a trainshow. It's a lot of noise and a lot of action along with it. So hop on... you get to even ride along behind it... check it out!

Your story tell voice with the slight southern drawl makes the narrative for this perfext. Fits the WM atmosphere almost as if scripted. Hope to see /hear more. Nice machine, I have three of them. Bears to get running right, but once they do, they're magical to behold. Some of the strongest workhorses I have too.

Love the Shays. I have several but only two are currently working. Yes they are complicated and fussy but a lot of fun !

The drive in this kit has spur gears, not the “normal” worm and gear assembly often used o model locomotives. This drive is the same used in the Ingersol Rand Box Cab made be MDC, and it too is extremely noisy. With the large final spur gear’s housing these will not clear Kadee between the rails delayed uncoupling ramps, too bad, these would have made very interesting locomotives to use on my Atlas time saver games. You’re right about the gear timing issue, the one I have slips time constantly, requiring adjustment. This is a fine inexpensive example of this very interesting locomotive, if memory serves MDC also produced a 3 truck version as well. I think the axle drive gear timing issue might be due to the fact that the “drive” gears are held in place by friction alone. Enjoyed the Video, it’s nice to see items I wish were still on the market, miss the “blue box kits” of my earlier model railroading days.

I have an MDC shay kit, but it's missing parts. Those parts that look like square metal tubing for the drive shafts. That's all I'll need to finish it, but i have no clue where to look.
