Looking good Pete. Re skimmer. I would mate, you are going to get bits floating. The food I'm using at the moment I'm getting a lot of protein on the surface. I knock my bottom drain off for 5 minutes and the skimmer gets rid of it 👍

Cracking on Shag well done any chances of building an extension when your finished. Skimmers I have one but I modified the free standing Oase one and it fits into a tank connector in the wall it can then be taken out for the winter etc. TBF Shag if I ever built another pond I wouldn't bother with a skimmer you may as well use one of them flat nets to skim the top off. Best thing with going with the type I have is that you can always use it as another return if you feel there's no need for the skimmer.

I personally would have a skimmer. If its setup correctly it will clear debris quickly from the surface obviously. But also future proofing, just incase you ever change filters to maybe a drum? Where ypu may beed more feeds. Or a shower, where you can take a fews directly from the skimmer. Good luck anyway from another weet brom koi keeper 😁

My last pond didn't have a skimmer and wad the worst decision I ever made was constantly netting shit off the top of the pond with leaves and stuff and the worst thing was the dust cos you can't net that off. So my advice would be to have a skimmer you can always just close the valves if you don't want it running but you can't add one in easily if you change your mind and want one in the future 👍😊

agreed, skimmers are subjective and not a requirement, you just have to ask yourself do you want to walk up to your pond and have foam and oil floating all over it or a nice clear fresh looking surface to see your fish.
I get what Ricky is saying but in the same breath he grows to sell, if he wants to view his fish he nets or bowls them, all of which is not what a hobbyist strives for.

if you have trees and foliage a skimmer will helps but the bottom drain can also solve it, the difference is with the skimmer the foliage won't deposit on the bottom

Skimmers I guess depends on the need if you suspect that you will get loads of leaves or other floating debris then worth having else why bother. I installed my one to low when the pond was build 20 odd years ago as I raised the water level from the intended level. Truly regret not having a functioning built in skimmer I have a floating one which is more trouble than it is worth

@@westbromkoi the other way of looking at it is that if you install it and don't use it it's a few wasted £ but if you don't install it and decide you do need it then it would be a major pain in the ass to retrofit

I don't think Ricky Stoddart gets a lot of leaves, debris and shit in his ponds bud. Do what YOU want, it's YOUR pond. I have an in wall skimmer and it's great, feeds the Bakki Shower too. You are right, peoples opinion vary, do what you want bud. Bless ya old man for helping out with more blocks mate. You know how your Koi behave and if you are watching them every day and looking closely at the Koi, no need to test weekly. Most treatments for water or the Koi, you can get far cheaper non branded just as effective products with adding Koi or Pond in the search engine.
