The Art of Smart Brevity - Write Less, Say More | Jim VandeHei | TEDxOshkosh

  • Never have humans talked, tweeted or texted more words - and found it more difficult to be heard. Veteran journalist Jim VandeHei, having come from traditional long-form journalism roots, created Axios to be an audience-first solution to today’s chaotic news and communication climate. The need for a new, effective, way to communicate isn’t confined to journalism, however, and any modern communicator can benefit from smart brevity. The more noise and distraction, the more precision and efficiency matter in being heard - and remembered. This talk shares the lessons VandeHei learned from running a media company that you can use to bust through the noise.
Jim VandeHei is a co-founder and CEO of Axios, a media company focused on breaking news and invaluable insights across politics, tech, business, media, and the world. Axios was created to help readers and viewers get smarter, faster across the topics reshaping our country and lives. VandeHei also serves as executive producer on "Axios on HBO".
Before Axios, VandeHei co-founded and was CEO of POLITICO, the media company that upended and revolutionized political and policy journalism in Washington, New York, and Europe. Overseeing both the editorial and business teams, VandeHei was the leading strategist behind its highly scalable and highly successful business model. VandeHei spent more than a decade as a reporter, covering the ins and outs of Washington politics and power, working at legacy publications such as Roll Call, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post.
VandeHei is from Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He has a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

3 ways to be more communicative:
Number 1: stop being selfish (11:20)
    Number 2 :Grab me!! (12:25)
Number 3: keep it simple (12:50)
    Number 4: Be human (13:30)

In a world saturated with words and pleas for our attention and energy, it's essential to be able to be concise, clear. But may we never lose the artistry of beautiful or clever wordsmith-ing, and lyrical communication that touches the soul, deeply.

    Things you can do:
    1. Stop being selfish. Audience first.
    2. Grab me. What’s the most important thing you want me to remember about what you are writing.
    3. Keep it simple. Use simple strong words.
    4. Be human. Write like a human. Stop using those big terms.
    5. Just stop. Use as few words and sentences as possible.
    Thank you.

Great speech! At my job I answer questions from coworkers and two techniques that help me achieve what he describes:
    1. After I've written everything I want to say and explain, my next goal is to cut it in half. If I've written a page, can I get away with a paragraph? If I've written a paragraph, can I get away with a sentence? Then let the reader ask me for details if they're curious or need it to do their job.
    2. After my greeting or 'thanks for reaching out' or whatever, I say 'bottom line is' or 'short answer is' and write a couple sentences or a few bullet points. Then I give them the play-by- play, in case they need it to do their job.

Omg, I remember those click-through articles.
They were SO annoying that I eventually boycotted them, and intentionally didn't read past the first page.
I hated that you couldn't see how long they were, and how much time they'd take to read.
It's not like the sites/servers were incapable of loading the whole article in one go....
And you got a LOT more ads spaced in between it all.
So glad those days are over!
What an insane business idea that was...

I also get impatient about stuff that is too wordy and with too many precautions and so on. So I like this initiative, and I will read the book.
But one thing to keep in mind is that this was born out of a news & social media context. Where the competition for attention etc. is notoriously higher than other domains. You need to sell the reader each time - about opening and reading your stuff.
In many other contexts we already have a "position" with the recipient. I will argue that not all emails need to have a disruptive / provocative headline and all the punchpoints in the first 1-2 sentences.

I just heard about this book on Morning Joe. What I got out of it has nothing to do with brevity as an asset. I got from the discussion is people have the attention spans of a gnat, cater to them. Sorry Smart Brevity! I don't talk in three grunts or write in three grunts or stop listening after three grunts. Someone asks me something I'll answer and depending on what it is, is my answer length. If people are too lazy to read or listen to more than three words then don't talk to anyone or read anything.
