My grandad grew up in rural Kent in the early part of last century. He knew these birds and red backed shrikes to be breeding along the Darent valley. Such a shame they no longer exist in the UK

Thank you for this - I am not sure if you have seen it, but I interviewed Brett Westwood and was discussing this with him, the losses that each generation feels etc. Red Backed Shrikes in the UK... I know some are seen during passage to our shores but apparently only 3 breeding pairs, if that now. I agree, it's a shame that we "don't know what we've got til it's gone"...

I'm lucky I get to call them garden birds here where I live, well at least during the summer I do. Remarkable how effective those colors actually are at hiding them between the high contrast sun and shade of tree canopies. Early in the season they're big on caterpillars on oak trees, moving to cherries by July and figs in August, they're also fond of mulberries and even eggs, the latter of which makes them very unpopular with 'our' nesting lesser grey shrikes though. Quite feisty too, I've seen males singlehandedly chase off crows and magpies. Lovely forest, I've got to check out your other France videos!

Lovely, just Lovely. For a girl that lives in Maryland just an hr from Baltimore, with the oriole being our state bird and our baseball team, I've never seen one where I live. Of course ours are orange and black. Two birds I haven't heard in maybe 20 yrs are the whippoorwill and the bobwhite, their song is their name, no guessing who they are when you hear them. My brother said he hasn't heard them where he is in forever as well, really sad. Thanks so much for sharing.

Thank you Wende! That's two more birds that I had not heard of before - just googled them and it's clear why the Whip-poor-will got it's name, same with the Bobwhite and what a fantastic call that has, I just found some footage on TH-cam, both fantastic birds. It's a real shame that you don't get to hear them anymore but I'm glad you enjoyed hearing this Oriole. I need to plan to find these two birds again for you now :) Best wishes, Joel

RSPB Lakenheath was the last stronghold, if you can call it that of the Golden Oriole in the Uk but not for several years now. East Anglia is reputed to have 1 or 2 pairs breed each year but they are for good reason closely guarded sites. There was 1 bird heard calling close to here in Warwickshire last year.

They nest behind my house. Wonderful to hear throughout the year. If I make the call they sometimes come and check out who is in their territory. They also make a very loud "ka-kaaa" sound that is also very distinct. The kids are like their mother (green), but all very elusive. If you want to see some nice fauna and flora, you should probably checkout Slovenia. We have karst, submediterranean, alps and a spot of a steppe.

They are very difficult to spot in the Poplar trees, but we hear them "warbling" away around the garden, you would think for such a brightly coloured bird they would be easy to see, I often see them fly from one grove of Poplars to another, that is the only time I see them, I did have 9 Red Kites flying over the field today, and that was a welcome sight. Take care! Chris B.
