This makes me wonder if ravens aren't the source of some ghost stories. Imagine, especially a few hundred years ago, a raven perched outside some poor soul's window muttering strange things

Amy: it's really hard to film her and I have been trying to make her say "wow" for two months now.
Fable alone: "wow" "wow" "wow" "wow" "wow" "wow" "wow" "wow" "wow" "wow" "wow" "wow" "wow" "wow" "wow" "wow".
Birds are assholes too sometimes. 😂

Lol, so true!! Maybe change "sometimes" to "frequently" though, lol. It's because they're so damn smart they love to play cause and effect games to see how WE react. All the while we are thinking it's US testing and observing THEM, but it's actually 100% a two way street.

I remember being a little girl, and going into a pet shop. The parrot at the door immediately said. "Hi, pretty girl! How are you?" As a kid who didn't get noticed or talked to a lot....I was hooked. LOL Yes, parrots are special. I plan on timing my retirement to adopt an older rescue parrot. (Yes I know they live longer than people, hence the timing) They take a LOT of care, patience and constant interaction. They are worth it. Taught a chicken to play scales on a piano and do card tricks. I'm READY!

I once volunteered in a bird sanctuary where they kept a Jackdaw, simply named Jack. Jack had previously lived in a pub, often hanging around indoors interacting with the patrons, up until he was taken away for a mix of health&safety/animal welfare reasons. Either way, he learned exactly two phrases during his days in the pub, the two things he was addressed with most often whilst there. "Hello", and "Fuck off". He'd repeat these two greetings to anyone that he met, with no particular pattern to it. Always made for hilarious (if slightly less "family friendly") moments with guests to the sanctuary. Eg, saying hello to the first three people, and telling the last to fuck off. Never failed to amuse.
I was told how he once briefly escaped his enclosure, and flew to sit in a bush beside the road. Gave an elderly woman on her bicycle quite a surprise when a strange voice repeatedly told her to "Fuck off fuck off fuck off" from just beside her as she passed. She came into the sanctuary to inform/ask the staff about a particularly rude bird.

When we listen to Fable talking 'nonsense' I think it's worth remembering that a lot of the sounds humans make in conversation are not actually words. They have tonal meaning - for instance, we make particular sounds to query something, to comfort somebody or to express interest. There are times here when Fable seems to be practising tone.

About a year before I was born, my mom rescued a Blue-Fronted Amazon, who at the time was terrified of humans and just about everything else. This may be why his vocabularly is lower than some Amazons' can be, but still he is very sensitive to our tones of voice. When we are sarcastic, he laughs or "groans" sympathetically; when we talk logistics or in a more serious tone to each other, he imitates our voices with these low, gibberish mumbles. And, like many mimicking birds, whenever he says "I love you", it's always with a real softness in his voice, so he does seem to understand the intent of that one perfectly well. While one shouldn't always rely on their instincts when interpreting animal sounds, it's not at all uncommon that their tone of voice will compare to that of a human's when frightened, annoyed, or excited.

Ooh, I actually know this one! So human speech is formed from complex "compound-sounds" when your larynx (vocal chords) gets the sound started, your mouth and nasal cavities then amplify it, and finally your tongue and lips finish shaping the sound.
Birds have what is called a syrinx, which structurally resembles a larynx but is located far deeper in the windpipe about where it branches into the two lungs, which effectively gives them two sets of vocal chords. Some bird families like Corvidae (crows, ravens, jays, ect) and Psittaciformes (parrots, parakeets, cockatiels, ect) have enough control over their syrinx that they can create a separate sound with each set of chords and make an imitation compound-sound which then gets amplified by their nasal cavity.
I'm kind of oversimplifing here, but I hope you understand it a little better now.

A neighbour I had a few years ago (around 2009 or so), lived in an old decrepit house just a few clicks from where I lived.
When he passed away, his daughter came to pick up his belongings, and she could have sworn that she heard his voice from

Turns out however, that a raven couple had set up a nest nearby, during the time he had lived there and so they had heard him out in the

It really works, even for ravens! I have got A levels in English, I studied grammar of course and had to build my vocabulary, but accent I practice by myself. I have quite a good accent now, I guess it is more east London accent where I live. This video needs to be shown to students who study foreign languages 🤓

I was thinking that exact thing; you see those videos like what does English sound like to non-English speakers; this is basically what does human language sound like to birds.

I love the fact that she sings to herself. She hums her own little tune.

The strange conversation sounds sort of like "what's this" "what's that", or "what's that over there?" She's practicing so hard! It's truly remarkable

Yeah, I also heard "What I say" or at least "what" and "say" I imagine she is trying to say, "what did I say" or "What did you say".

15:35 "Ohhhh Fable" with the "What have you done?" tone. From what I've heard about ravens being mischievous cheeky jokers, she must have heard that a few times :)
And the laughing and singing. So charming!

I used to have a blackbird in my area who heard me whistling to my music over and gradually we would whistle at eachother with me making my call similar to his.
For 3 ish years this happened. Hed come and jump about on the grass or trees and get whistling with me.
He brought his chicks and mrs when he could and theyd all whistle with their dad whistling with me.
    So cute.
I adore birds. This ones a trip!
