This film was incredible and very sad. To not award an award seems to speak to our society. No one likes to look at themselves and by looking at himself, Jim Carrey taught us to look inside and identify with him. A noteworthy film.
I like talking about this movie because, as you said, you found it “very sad”. Yet many others I’ve spoken to find it to be extremely hopeful, as Truman beat his fears and phobias and walked out of his comfort zone. The thing is, I do t think either view is wrong. It’s very interesting.
@@pathutchison7688 as someone who is watched daily I don't know what to do. I am so tired of people watching me. If I had a lake to go over I would but I don't know what to do to break out of it.
yeah i'm just a piece of cheese, i dont really wanna be here.
This film is a perfect allegory for enlightenment/ self-realization. Just like self-inquiry, when you question everything, you find out what is real and what are merely concepts. By staying single pointed, he was able to push through to find the truth. He wanted to find out more than anything else. He kept the burning desire that is required to go all the way without being distracted by the illusion. It’s a masterpiece.
the first time I watched this film I was totally terrified by the plot. It's insane. Truman had no say - his life was controlled right from birth. What a film! It's intriguing, terrifying, bewildering and brilliant!
Without the horrible part of being part of reality show, it rings true to a lot of aspects of our society nowadays and people conform to what it would be scary to think of back then:
To showcase your life daily on social media, as episodes from a show
To buy things influencers online suggest (after showing their lives)
Most people performing an act
The one person who dares to tell the truth is labeled as crazy
Imposed false constructed fears that in the end control peoples decisions like where they put their vote
Etc.
Absolutely amazing movie. And excellent acting by Jim. He should have got the Oscar for this one.
Yes, I liked him best in this role. Sad but speaking of our society at present. He was and should have been awarded with the Best Actor! Jealousy and envy got in the way.
He was good in the Majestic too.
I think Jim carrey is better at movies like this. I never found him to be that funny! But I do like his movies.
As a former librarian, I always relished the opportunity to recommend this movie to patrons who hadn't seen it.
It's abuse. It's horrible.
when you think of what it would have taken to control all the little kid-actors that would have been used while he was young this is basically impossible to pull off, some kids would have spilt the beans too many times
In an in-universe behind the scenes look at the Truman show, his 'best friend' Marlon talks about how when he was added to the show, he wasn't told either. In his eyes his mom took him to a new town, brought him to a new school, pointed to Truman and said "go play with that boy". At least initially, none of the children were allowed to know it seems for the very reason you say. I suspect at some point they are told, given a bunch of money as compensation (since they're working actors) and then threatened with lawsuit (or their parents are threatened). Fear is a convincing motivator to do things we may not truly believe is right, especially if we can justify it by saying "oh, well Christof is the really bad guy", or "hey, I'm just as trapped in this as him, and I'm just following orders".
Jim Carrey deserved an Oscar for that movie
And so did Ed Harris for supporting actor - he was great too!
I only recently got around to watching. Serendipitously I wound up getting hit closer to home than I thought.
As someone who's had to search for people to live with due to being in and out of homelessness. that part where he realized no one around him actually cared, holding him back and gaslighting. Just wish I hadn't broke down at the end
I love this movie one of the best i have ever seen. The story alone is a masterpiece.
I'm glad that Jim Carrey won the Golden Globe for this and that Ed Harris was nominated for best supporting actor - I wish he had won as he was great in the movie as well. There is a measure of luck involved in winning an award as it depends on that year's competition and you also have to consider that a lot of truly great movies take years to be fully recognized. And the movies that do win Best Picture are often viewed later as inferior. I remember seeing The Truman Show at the theatre and really liking it. But, I don't think I would have said it was a truly great movie at that time. Years later I changed my mind. I now consider it one of the top twenty best movies I've ever seen.
It doesn't just depend on competition. Studio producers actively lobby and basically kiss ass Academy voters or even outright try to bribe certain voters to give their film nominations and ultimately the award.
Harvey Weinstein is the guy that created the blueprint for this method of getting awards, a blueprint that is used to this day. And it was actually that same year, the 1999 Academy Awards, that he did his most aggressive lobbying and it paid off as Shakespeare in Love cleaned house at the Oscars, even beating Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture.
In my opinion, studios should not be allowed to lobby or have knowledge of who the Academy members are. They can submit their films for consideration in the award categories they feel they did the best in and that's it.
The Truman Show, is great.
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind is another awesome character for Jim Carrey. It's a bummer sometimes when genuine talent isn't taken as seriously in a character simply because of massive talent in another. Others might disagree with that, and that's the beauty of opinion, but in my opinion he had really good quality in other, more serious parts. Its hard to look past memories and feelings geared towards the talent that a star contributes to you in something from before. His skill in his specific niche is just so finely sharpened I guess..
Love this dude ..
Yes!!!!!! he deserved an Oscar.
as good as he was in this film, the writing and direction are just as good. It's not the acting that carries the film. It's the overall quality of the film itself.
Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind was even better
Actually i did understand the truman show thank you.
I adore Jim Carey ❤️ & would love to have a long conversation with him, he seems very intuitive based on the roles he chooses to participate in.
He s such a versatile character ,yet he mai.tains his goofy character plots that comes up In each movie and fim he s ever made. What a card as the joker that he didn't t play in Batman but did a fantastic job as The riddler! Loved him in Mask! !
I would definitely like to meet Jim carrey. Upclose and in person.
So would I, but for opposite reasons...

They didn't state their reasons.
I love all of Jim Carreys films but this is one of my favorites! All of his work is absolutely fabulous! And btw Jim I too spent my childhood in front of the mirror making faces because of pure boredom! Lol
Breaking down illusions... Master Wizard pure genius, slightly ahead of his time.
This video has helped inspire my presentation at school as I wanted to do one on the truman show and this vid gives a great analysis. Thank you!

I agree that he deserved an Oscar for this movie. But Life is Beautiful absolutely did too.
I don’t know how to feel about this movie because all the orphans and fatherless that I know of have lived and have to live very very hard lives some never recover some don’t live long at all
Perhaps from the eyes of a person being recorded or followed it looks very different, it’s clear to see why he ( Trueman) would want the challenges of a real marriage, real love conquers All.
My son Brian really loved Jim s acting I Truman Capote! I agree as Jim did his best acting.....
Security vs. Freedom
truman show went from my "not watched" section to my "top five favourites" section
1: JAWS
2: JURASSIC PARK
3: TREMORS
4: TRUMAN SHOW
5: LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK
"Seaside was built in the 80's of the 20th century [...]" The script for this video was written by chat GPT, wasn't it? At least the voice sounds human..
I have nothing to say on whether ai did or didn't write the script but the 1900s are the 20th century. We are now in the 21st century
Easily my favorite Jim Carrey movie. You get a little bit of Carrey’s goofiness, but also so serious and dramatic.
Surveillance is gaslighting.
It's a little cliche movie.... But I just love the idea behind it.... It reminds a lot of the allegory of the cave by Plato.... Many also mentioned similarities between this and The Matrix.... Interesting movie, with interesting ideas, although a little cliche.....
Jeez, it was the best film that year and it has become a cult and the best mirror of our society. Why didn't he win the Oscar for best actor? He deserved it but the Oscars are always a disappointment for Cinephiles. They understand nothing about the arts but everything abt money and politics. That's how foreigners never get an Oscar, and how undeserving films and actors (WS-2022) get the overrated award. It used to mean something, not anymore.
"[...] and deservedly won a Golden Globe and was also nominated for an Oscar."
30 seconds later:
"[...] and Carrey didn't even get a nomination."
Schrödinger's Carrey.
Yes its not to late to given him the award
Could easily swapped out Benini for Carrey
If I also want to post about films and to give my opinions on it how would I do it without it getting blocked by TH-cam?
No mention that this movie was half Australian.
this film is actually super depressing lol
@10:26 Have you ever been in a fight with your wife and she breaks out into commercial?
He knows the whole time
Sirius = Serious. The story is real!
did gpt3 write this essay?
Fabulous film 🎥 yes Jim should have gotten an Academy Award
This is the best Movie!!!
Is the film about Truth setting him & us free or is it about how treating others is so very important for the past present & future
Of course Jim Carrey deserves an Oscar.
No Oscar for J. Carrey. He must have pissed off a lot of important people in the film industry. Yup…I think so.!
O melhor filme de todos os tempos foi "O MENTIROSO". nUNCA ví um filme tão verdadeiro igual a este, e tão engraçado. Meus parabens a Jimm Kellen.
What people don’t realize, is this movie is showing you that we all live inside a dome (the firmament created by god) and our lives, even though they are our own, are actually run by people we never even see. (The government). They show you so many truths in this movie and no one even notices. Like the moon being a luminary and not a physical surface. Becuase as anyone who reads their Bible knows, the moon is not a rock we can fly to, it’s one of two light sources created by God in the book of Genesis…one is the moon and the other is the sun. Later in the movie Truman starts to realize the (government) is lying to him and seeks to find the truth. He reaches the end of the dome and finally realizes everything he was ever told his entire life by the people in power was a lie, and he finally sees the light. And that light is the word of god that’s been right I;front of our faces for thousands of years but most of us just believe everything the school systems and government tell us without question 😢
At the end I was expecting a mention of the amazing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. But... oh well... that's actually my fave Carrey movie....
Am I crazy or does this video essay sound like the most generic, AI made thing in the world?
Everyone pees, poops and master bates so what happens to the live footage when Truman is firing off some knuckle childeren wherever he sees fit?
How did Jim didn't got OSCAR!!??
What's with your thumbnail? Should I watch because I disagree that I didn't understand?
why truman show is wonderful movie? Isn't that a bad title? like shouldn't it be Why the truman show is ''A'' wonderful movie?
How the fuck is his ring a camera. How are they keeping it charged and connected? That's the most unrealistic thing about this film tbh.
😂
How does a small watch with a quartz battery keep working? Connected? Wifi.
@@cacatr4495 it's runs off a battery, this one presumably didn't. Did he ever take it off? Did he ever charge it? Replace the battery?? It's wholly unrealistic.
@@XYGamingRemedyG
If it was removed to take a shower (or for something else), the fake spouse could have changed the battery at that point. I see your point though, given the limits of the technology we're familiar with, but specialized tech has always been at least 30 years ahead of what is available in the marketplace, so who knows. Of course, movies don't have to be realistic.
@@cacatr4495 oh so true, HOPEFULLY no one would do this to a person 😷
That's a great question 🤔 🤣

I thought he was GREAT in this movie.
What about the movie "CLICK"...
Great movie dealing with real life situations!
Jim Carrey deserves an Oscar over Will Smith.
I have what I assume is a minority viewpoint on The Truman Show. I'm not saying that Truman's life was good and that I would want to be him, but then, I'm not saying his life was all that bad. He lived in a world where the weather was always perfect, people were friendly and he didn't have to worry about basic necessities. If I were to defend Cristof I believe I could make the argument he gave Truman a pretty good life. One thing you have to wonder is will Truman ever look back? Will he get out in the real world and grow weary of it......will he think back to the life he had and long for it? It is easy to dismiss this and say no way, but is that real life? I suppose it depends on exactly what happens to Truman on the outside, but I could certainly imagine him one day wishing he were back in the world of The Show.
“Trueman” is a human, living in a world which is created and directed by the god named christoph. He obeyed the rules of god, so called “destiny”. In the end he leaves the stage. He leaves the world of god. Maybe this is to mean a suicide.
why none is taking abt the full moon always in the sky.
This is my life without pay. Can this be happening to others?
It should not surprise or upset Mr. Carrey or anyone else that Jim never got an Oscar. After all, as he demonstrated in The Truman Show "it's ALL FAKE!" There is an ultimate Reality outside of this fake life we're living - an Eternal Reality where "oscars" and such don't matter and we don't care about stuff like that. I would think that movies like this would drive people to the Bible, but that does not seem to be the case. However, Jim's spiritual roots are showing and maybe ... maybe .....
👏👏👏👏
What really creeps me out is that it a show in. Movie crazy and it’s almost feels like the movie was like season one of something bigger than u think like what if everyone there was being recorded and broadcast like what happened in the true man show but lien for aliens and them to see we as interesting 🧐 creatures that what creeps me out like that could what he happening to us but we wouldn’t know like who do u think that main character ✅🤨
I also heard this thing it was actually real were
Farmers we’re putting fr headsets on cow to increase milk production to be farmed like brooo that Truman show shit right there like are our dead bodies be harvested for bigger and stronger creatures ? Like did u see that stuff that happened to trueman like how a radioactive ☢️ thing happens well guess what a volcano exploded and that sound was loud enough to be heard all over the entire earth 4 times like broo what 👽👽🫥
Did no one figure it out in the first 20 minutes? I found the film to be extremely predictable.

🌏 The true Oscar lives inside you. The people you've touched with your films and those who love your brilliance as an actor. Most loved and deserving artists to date are Jim Carrey and Keanu Reeves. Artists so worthy of an avalanche of recognition. Both inspiring with a rock solid foundation as an artist. Amazing actors with creative vision who will live on through the history of film for their dynamic and unique contributions to the world of cinema. People who have experienced and appreciated their performances in film, are and will be, their living Oscars through time. ☆
It all just sounds too complicated I don't want to think that much when I'm watching a movie or TV how silly
you missed the whole pint of the movie
The only thing that bothered me about this film is that he would have never stepped though that door. His life was too good and comfortable and he knew nothing else. No one throws everyone and everything away and starts somewhere without anything - unless their life is a complete nothing.
I personally think it ended at the perfect time. It was about the triumph of the human spirit. How we long to explore and be free over comfort. That's why humans have built what we've built.
Everything and everyone around him was fake though and he had been pretty much trapped.
He also wanted to see Sylvia plus have freedom and live in something real, even if it has risks etc.
Being gay, and older, I really wish ANYONE else had starred in this film... When I see him, all I can do is recall his early, very homophobic work on "In Living Color" and "SNL" and I just cringe... I hate him so much, it makes my skin crawl.
It looks like a great concept for a film... but I think watching this video would just make me feel worse about it, rather than better.
LOL how was he homophobic? He was portraying a maximum camp gay guy, and at no point put down gay people
@@Tails7212 Yes, he was perpetuating hurtful homophobic stereotypes, wasn't he? It was very humiliating to see him portray us that way. You are obviously straight and incredibly bigoted, so I am muting you. You have nothing to say of interest to me at all.
@@Tails7212 Are you saying you would find it funny if white people put on dark makeup and made jokes about eating watermelon or fried chicken and picking cotton? If not, then why don't you see how homophobic it is for Carey to do that to the gay community? Are you serious?
