I've been watching the Carol Burnett Family sketches. I can't quite describe why they're so good. Unfortunately they're not listed in order, so I have to bounce around.

When I was telling some folks that I loved Mama's Family because it was so relatable to my growing up in Mississippi and watching this show was the only thing we did together and only thing we laughed together over they thought this was horrible, but I mean it in a good way. Our life was messed up but Mama's Family made it seem a bit more normal, compared to the other 80's sit coms where everything was cute and comfortable.

Ken Berry, Carol Burnette, Vickie Lawrence and Betty White. All classics in their own right, put together on one show is pure genius. amazing combination.
When she wailed, "I want my mama!", it was so harrowing, I had to go hug my wife. When her mom passed, she cried saying the same words. It broke my heart.
Noooooo…… Carol wasn’t even nominated for an Emmy here, She has a very bad habit of over-playing the dramatic scenes. As a sketch comedian, that style of acting works well. But in a piece like this, which veers uncomfortably from comedy to drama, often within the same scene, it can be terribly off-putting. Watch Carol cry out to Mother Mary in “Pete n Tillie” some time, you will see what I mean.

I was a little kid, watching this in real time. I fell asleep every Friday night after The Hulk and then Dukes of Hazzard. By the time of Dynasty or Dallas, I was being carried by my parents or my older brother to my bed. Both were moral and am glad to say that we were poor but it was the best. Both of my parents worked to make sure we had what we need. My mother doesn’t have the fond memories that I have. She worked so hard and always had a fire when we got up. My dad is gone but my mother is a saint

Yes, forever searching for the love they need that was withheld from them. That's a way to hang on to someone, to control them, to always withhold what they want or need, just give them a little taste, enough to whet their appetite, meanwhile treating them like hell.
Im 40 yeats old and for all my accomplishments at 20 years old most people would never accomplish yet my parents allways put me down and never once said I love you.its tragic that some wounds especially abuse as a child weather verbal physical or sexual never truly heal you will allways have trust issues with people and yourself. See Eunice's family in a sense put guilt on her for trying to leave better herself in a way they never could..so it made Eunice have guilt amd therefore ruined her life
Wow this had me in tears. That’s too much realness. Utterly understand her pain. Good for Phil standing up and shining a loving light on her. It’s was needed. I wanted her to run for opportunity. Sometimes being codependent is an unbreakable addiction.
I’d like to believe Phil came back and said “hell no Eunice! Let Ellen take care of auntie - you’re coming with me!!!” And Eunice ended up in LA with her brother and didn’t act, but collaborated with him on a book about her life with Momma, and it got turned into a movie. 💚🧡💛
Or maybe, she pretended to go a long with what Ina said, only to say " But there's just something I got to say first Aunt Ina before anything...SIT ON IT, OLD LADY!!!" and then slamming that phone down whooping joyfully 😊
I remember well when this aired on tv back in 1982. For someone like Carol, this chance to fully tell Eunice's story must have been not only an actor's dream to expand on a character but I'm sure it was therapeutic for her as well being that her upbringing parallels some of the situations in Eunice's life. This should definitely be on dvd and of course it begs for a optional commentary track from Carol herself. A real heartbreaking story. Isn't it strange that we all have come across a Eunice in our lives?
Running through the house searching for her mother, the whole bedroom scene was the saddest and realest thing ever. I know just how she and Phil felt. And feeling like you've put your life on hold for other people like her aunt Ina
I'm currently in a funk myself and feel that all I've done so far in my life is fail and disappoint others. But after listening to the lecture Philip gave Eunice, I realize that I haven't really been a failure at all. I'm just experiencing an obstacle right now. With the right help and the willingness to work hard, I know I will pull out of this funk and things will improve.

While wrought with laughter, it is quite a tragic tale. For all her flaws, Eunice is, deep down, a very good person with a crippling hang-up that, in the end, she just couldn't overcome.

I saw it way back in 1982 when it first aired. Now looking back, I realize how brilliant this was. As many have written, the Mama's Family skits on the tv series were a bit more light hearted but with serious undertones and with serious doses of reality. The family relationships were shown to be believable, which is what makes this special so real and true. Thank you for uploading this so fans today could see it for the first time or rediscover it.
I loved mama’s family and this is brilliant the acting Everything from the beginning to the end The ending is so sad. Eunice stays. Never Will she have dreams come true
normally even the comedy series sketches were hard to take but this one was like taking a gut-punch - had no idea this existed and am so grateful to see such great performances all around-standing ovation
This whole masterpiece is a jolting roller-coaster ride of emotions. Highest of highs, lowest of lows. I've always felt partial to Eunice for some reason. I always felt she settled for less because she didn't have the self-esteem needed to propel her foward in life. This piece also subtly touches on mild verbal abuse from family members. Eunice seems to be the main punching bag for the whole family. See how Mama treats the other 2 siblings with affection, expecting nothing but the best for them? Whereas Eunice is the "disappointment" of the family, and is made to feel as such. But in the end, she is the spit and glue of the whole family dynamic. Spectacular acting from ALL cast members, here. Thank you for this nostalgic show piece!
Ieland, it indeed was not as funny as the CB Skits featuring Mama, but it still had funny places throughout, that were reminiscent of that show. Plus I think the whole idea was for it NOT to be non-stop laughs, because there was a seriousness about it coming up at the end & was downright touching & a real tear-jerk-er. Especially, if you ever had a Mama, LIKE Eunice's' "Mama" as I had, & then you lost her. I was so able to identify with the entire last part. So, it would have been awkward if the laughs were non-stop leaving one crying in a very different & good way -- laughing 'til you cry] & then suddenly got touching & serious at the end to be something completely different. It had to be eased into, because the END was the whole point of "Eunice". FINALLY, getting her big break, only to be sucked back in. Mama, was definitely NOT at her best & funniest, but that would have only distracted from the plot was headed, something more serious & with a message.
@@hotgritz4sho seeing this has made me look at my family how I was the successful one and the rest of my family allways seemed incapable now looking back maybe my punishment on them was a bit harsh as they may too have simply beem scared ? Id at least like to think that but lazy and selfish wanting to live off me seems to be the real reality of it than them being scared 😨
I credit this special for giving me the courage to leave Alabama and start a new life in Los Angeles. I have never regretted it. I didn't want to wind up like Eunice.

This is really ensemble acting at it's finest. I love Carol Burnett and Vicki Lawrence (and am a fan of Mama's Family), but the unsung hero here is Ken Berry. The way he portrayed the extremes of character between Philip and eventually Vint in Mama's Family are really a testament to his acting ability.
Watching in jan2021. I watched The Carol Burnett show every Sat. Nite as a young girl. I saw this movie of Eunice when I was 19. The good old days of TV. Trash is all we have now on TV. Thank goodness for videos and DVD,s!

My father Harvey Korman directed this 90 teleplay which was considered the pilot for MF.I thought my dad brought out the best in all of them.The show ranked 7th for the week.My dad loved working with Carol,Betty and Ken,Vicki..I thought Ken was stronger as philip then McDowell and I thought that Vinton was a waste of his talent.My dad hated playing Ed on Burnett and in this teleplay.He felt the accent was forced and not convincing.He also hated being abused by Eunice and mama.
Your Dad was a super fine actor! He made me laugh many times in a lot of different things. I am so glad that he got to do what he wanted to do, aside from ED in the skits. Thank you for sharing! Blessings.
I had the honor of meeting your dad and George Segal outside the Beverly Hilton back in ... ? Late 1990's or so? They were just hanging outside talking and cutting up, the even going on inside hadn't started yet. Your dad - both men - we incredibly gracious and kind, signing and autograph each and shaking my hand. From The Great Gazoo to Carol's Show to his hilarious genius working with Mel Brooks ... man, heaven gained so much when that warm, funny, big-hearted man passed.
That was a great performance by all, especially Carol! Seeing those old show previews takes me back to being a kid in the seventies with only three networks to watch, not counting PBS, of course.
Wow, I remember bits of this from when I was a kid. The memory of Eunice learning Fluffy’s fate is about only thing that stuck with me and was completely hysterical. Now, 40 years later, I’m fighting back tears at my desk watching that very same iconic scene. What a powerful mix of comedic drama with total and utter despair. Probably about the same as the lives of 99.9% of humanity. One for the ages. Very well done!
It's so interesting how our perspectives change once we get older, isn't it! As little kids, we saw the whole Family series of skits hilarious, but now that we are older and have gone through life a bit, we see the toxicity and accompanying behaviors that we can relate to from our own life experiences, and we are heartbroken watching it.
This iteration of Eunice is PARTICULARLY depressing because the audience thinks Phil has a point that Eunice is always making excuses not to try in life, that she's using others to avoid failing, and then at the tail end you realize she's not scapegoating, or making excuses, but literally feels like other people need her in order to survive. She's such a sad character because she's probably the most empathetic and altruistic, and she gives until she explodes, making her appear to be the most cold and self-serving. Phil, who appears to be the objective and wise savior character, CONSISTENTLY withdraws from the environment when anyone needs anything. He appears to be the most stable, but it's only a façade; he never deals with the family issues head on. The healthiest part of the entire film was when Eunice - without blowing up or going into histrionics - tells Ed after the funeral he should leave.
I disagree about Phil. Leaving his sick family was the only healthy choice and he was the only one clear-sighted enough to see it. He's more than willing to help Eunice in the only way that's meaningful, by getting her the hell out of there.
Don and Corey, Although, each synopsis you offered us engaging and insightful, I am troubled that both of you chose to ignore the elephant in the room, when much as Alice Walker wrote in The Color Purple; " Pa no Pa", in this television classic, Phil not Phil. 😎
@Maurice Thanks for the response. Perhaps it's time I re-read The Color Purple. Meanwhile I don't see a strong parallel between Phil and Pa, who abused Celie physically and sexually and gave her in marriage to an equally abusive husband.
@@dontaylor7315 don't you see that Phil was originally played by Roddy McDowall. It's like the folks that insist Paul McCartney died in 1966 and was replaced with a lookalike. Paul not Paul In the Alice Walker novel, Celie was raised believing the man who raised her and raped her was her father but, along with her, we learned that her real daddy left her some property. Pa not Pa. Too much exp laining = bad joke 😢 They're not gonna' laugh at you
@Maurice When I wrote "Perhaps it's time I re-read The Color Purple" I was anticipating I might have forgotten some pretty important things - turns out one of those things was the fact "Pa" in the early part of the novel was an imposter. So I missed your reference when you cited "Pa no Pa" and my oversight was compounded by the fact I've never been very focused on Phil or who was playing him whether it was Roddy McDowall or whoever replaced him. So whoosh, the whole "Pa no Pa/Phil no Phil" joke went right by me.
What a great cast. The emotion, the caregiver. Ken Berry performance in response to Eunice. Superb. Yes I had a I want to talk to my mom experience and Carol portrayed perfectly.
All I can say about this was WOW!!!!! I remember this when I was 11 years old, but never saw it. I was always a fan of The Carol Burnett show. I now see Eunice in a whole different light and all the struggles that she went through. This was definitely a top notch performance. There should be more shows that have writers like the ones they had during this period.
And like many of us, put othersneeds before our wants and dreams Mostly never to be appreciated for it. Its easy to turn your back on those who need you. But then, you gotta live with yourself. And the fact you turned ypur back on loved ones.. No win situation.
Truth is, though, she had no real chance of succeeding. (NOTE: Shows of the time were often unrealistic such a regard.) While moving away from Raytown would probably have been good for her, she'd have been destined to living in her brother's home and pursuing a typical Hollywood career as a waitress.
He just passed away, and it's hard to imagine he's gone. He seemed like a very contended, positive, nice guy. F-Troop was such a good platform for Berry's talents in comedy and physicality. It's startling how well he plays the drama here. He really was a talented man.
The hardest par to watch of this special, is the last segment (when Mama has died) it is SO genuinely heartfelt and emotional, I can't help but to cry, it is spectacularly well performed!
It took me years to watch this and even now watching the entire things it's like I have lost. This was the best acting to this day, to actually have such a powerful piece that is still relevant to today.

I’m the youngest of four daughters. I graduated college, including 9 months of school in France, and served 11 years in the USAF, including 3 months in Saudi Arabia. My three older sisters married right after high school graduation and had children. They mocked me when I left for college, said I wouldn’t make it. Did the same when I joined the military. All they did was fortify my determination to make something of my life. It takes willpower and self-actualization to turn away from the trappings of home and set your mind on greater heights. Don’t expect everyone to understand or support you. But don’t let them hold you back or give you excuses for not moving on. It’s your life! Live it!
I cannot agree with you more on this!!! I joined the Army back in 1975 despite the arguments from my parents telling me I'm not going to like it. I joined, saw the world, flew in a Jet Plane first time in my life, got college benefits, worked on my career and learned at an early age to make your own decisions in life and go for it! There are no guarantees in life but you CAN Control Yourself!
if this is eunice's story i hate to see what her mother's was. for all that comedy, i always felt eunice was mistreated. my heart really goes out to her now.
My grandma passed away about a month and half ago.. my grandparents raised me.. she loved this show! When mama passes away.. OMG! I cried like a baby! This has been the hardest thing in my life!! 💔💔💔😰😰😰
I never knew about this TV special, so glad I found it on TH-cam by watching "The Family" sketches...But My Lord, is it sad... I remember my grandmother crying out after losing her mother "I want my mama"-That made me weep out loud... I fear losing my grandmother who's 83, and I can't even bear the thought of losing my own mama...this was so sad
This program really fleshes out the storyline and helps us understand Eunice. It is really more drama than comedy. Very undermentioned and underrated. That ending tears me up every time!
I don't remember the movie but just watched it. This was a masterpiece.. Great acting.. funny movie but tragic.. I cried for Eunice at the end.. her character was relatable when realized she was used by her family and really had low self esteem and self doubt. Good movie

Philip was the only one who ever genuinely loved Eunice. Everyone else took advantage of her--especially her sister Ellen. It was Eunice's DEVOTION to her family that caused her grief--SO SAD!
I watched CB when I was a kid, but by the time 1982 rolled around I was a senior in HS ready to graduate and join the military, I had no clue what was still on TV. This was an awesome thing to watch. CB never disappoints!
Bravo to the writers, actors, costume and set designers for this series, and the movie finale. They are a towering study in dysfunction - a real tour de force!
I just love how they did this to give the family skits a finale, and it did not disappoint. Such brilliant performances, the mix of comedy and drama, an ending both sad and hopeful. It was a real treat watching all these again. I appreciate it so much more now as an adult.
Here I am, first day of 2022, long time Mama"s Family fan, never knew any of this existed. Wow! The self sabotage. She was supposed to be calling her job to quit, but instead she called someone she knew she could use as an excuse for not trying. For too many people, our dreams will never be more than just a dream. . . But the acting and story was 🔥 ❤
The ending breaks my heart. Eunice and Ellen fight viciously. When Eunice cries for her mama, it makes me think about my late mom. I love the Mama series that followed. I miss the series.

If their hadn’t been the Carol Burnett show which made the spin off Eunice their wouldn’t have been a Mamas Family..it was a win win for everyone. Carol Burnett is my all time fave woman comedian… she paved the way for so many female comedians… she is a legend. All these amazing people are. 👏🏼👏🏼
This was made when I was a child. Watching it in my 50's and I'm glued. I'm amazed by the writing. This story was predicated upon some very dark stuff. Excellent work by all involved.

Carol Burnett is just phenomenal....what an incredible talent! Over the years she created some of the most hysterically funny characters in TV history but I think her finest character was most definitely Eunice. In this special you really saw Carol's talent as a dramatic actress as well. Vicki Lawrence's portrayal of Mama is amazing as well and it's interesting how that character changed from being so mean and bitter in the Family sketches and in this special to a little softer but still with an edge on the network series to endearing and borderline sweet in the syndicated show. Such great enduring characters. This special really shows the inner workings of a dysfunctional family such as many of us have dealt with and even though this was originally done for comedy there is a very definite realness to these different characters and a depth and complexity to them particularly from the character of Eunice as well as Mama. This one was definitely dark....the family sketches on The Carol Burnett Show were funny with some dark undertones but this was definitely darker and got more into the character's minds. Especially Eunice's. I found it very relatable.
I can relate and the tough part for people like Eunice is breaking away from those dysfunctional families. Still something I am working on myself. It's tough to deal with the drama and overbearing parents but it's even harder to go out into the real world but it is necessary. Otherwise life ends up full of what ifs like Eunice's does.
The character of Eunice was always the tragic part of life in Mama's Family sketches and even in the series. When Eunice showed up, i was always as a character that was mildly amusing but with something dark behind it. For a sister like Ellen to tell Eunice what became of Fluffy was an evil way to hurt her to the core, for the simple pleasure of being evil. The series they made called Mama's Family featured an occasional Eunice who was not so hurt and tragic. She was just made an ordinary loser, someone who could never attain her dreams because of this and that. I really enjoyed Mama's Family, even though they made the late Ken Berry a nincompoop, but he loved his wife Naiomi and that was his redemption. Mama was less cruel in the series. I never saw this production featuring Eunice's life. I only saw it now in 2019. Carol Burnett was and is a wonderful actress and comedienne, and I wonder how she felt about the dark sides of Eunice's life. I think it's also remarkable that she allowed Vicki Lawrence to develop her character of Mama to the point of creating her own series. I miss the old Carol Burnett shows but I also miss Mama. I wish it had continued on even further. It's like a landmark of American family life, and it's entertaining. Just my 2 cents.
I actually saw a mamas family reunion on Vicki Lawrence's talk show. On it Vicki explained that after this movie came out Carol Burnett said to her to make this show and run with Mama. So maybe Carol reached her limit of catharsis from playing the character. Maybe she knew Vicki had potential as a comedianne and gave her the opportunity to make people laugh all over. Maybe that's just me being sentimental. But you do bring up marvelous points. Creating characters, even comedic ones, usually borrow from something inside of us. Good, bad, light, dark, we all take from things we know.
I've always loved Carol Burnett, but seeing her in this just strengthened my positive opinion of her. She shined in this. Ken Berry's talent was wasted playing Vinton. Thanks for posting.
Vinton was a moron but he had a big heart. And his character of Vinton was more appropriate for the eventual family sitcom setting instead of this Phillip which fit this more serious comedy drama here. He was great either way.
The reason Eunice acted the way she did, is because her family treated her so rotten, she never heard any positive encouragement and her mother Thelma never even took an interest in Eunice's life, therefore she was ignored and treated like she didn't exist, which only made Eunice feel depressed, sad, and withdrawn. On the Carol Burnett show the character of Mama was really an abusive mother to Eunice she was very emotionally abusive. I am glad when the sitcom Mama's Family came to be, she was toned down and more likeable and funny instead of mean and so emotionally abusive. So again, the reason wy Eunice is the way she is is mainly because of how her mother abused her, that's how it ALWAYS happens and then the mother/father doesn't want to take the blame or responsibility to repair the damage, they act like they didn't do anything. It's sad!!
Justin W You are obviously right. I've read tons of comments by ppl reporting how they were treated like Eunice, men and women, but not one comment by anyone saying they were Thelma to their child. No responsibility, but then abusive ppl never admit to being wrong or even to having done anything. The child is crazy, bad, or telling lies.
Life is hard for many of us, but we have to try as hard as we can to move forward. I've tried to create the most positive life as I can for my own daughter. It's helped me a lot, too. I'm sure some of you know just what I mean.
No, not a narcissist. She was herself raised by mean parents, the European way, probably would have been German stock. But she was, in her way, protecting Eunice from failure and the crack-up that would have caused. It was always made clear, I thought, that Eunice had no real talent. This is the small-town way of thinking and behaving. Ignorance is misery.
The mystery to me was how Philip was so good-natured, successful, generous, and SANE enough to get out. Unless knowing his father's life and death made him desperate to avoid the same fate? To save himself? 😣

This is one of the saddest movies I’ve ever seen. I don’t know why I keep watching it over and over again. I guess it’s because I’m so much like Eunice.
Carol Burnett was a wonderful actress with a wide range of expressions and talent. This era of TV seems to me to be unparalleled, with many wonderful actors and actresses. That is why they are called actors. Able to convince an audience that what the audience is seeing is real. Thank you, Carol, Vicky, Harvey, Ken, Don and countless others. Also the people behind the scenes. A complete team effort. Great work !
This was a good movie, but rather sad as well. It's not hard to see how Eunice was so messed up. So many of us can relate to her family dynamic. I remember how unhappy I was when she caved in to her aunt when she finally had the chance to go live her dream. Hopefully she did it anyway.
The ending was sad, but it was complete stupidity and delusional for her to move to LA to be an actress. Her brother was indulging her pipe dream merely because that's what family ought to do, help one another no matter what.
I was never a fan of the family skit, but I loved this. It’s amazing to see things from Eunice’s point of view. She really did get the raw end of the deal. Harvey Korman did an amazing job directing this. He made the characters relatable. Thanks for posting this!
That last scene is perhaps the saddest. Eunice is going right back into the mill.

When I was telling some folks that I loved Mama's Family because it was so relatable to my growing up in Mississippi and watching this show was the only thing we did together and only thing we laughed together over they thought this was horrible, but I mean it in a good way. Our life was messed up but Mama's Family made it seem a bit more normal, compared to the other 80's sit coms where everything was cute and comfortable.

Noooooo…… Carol wasn’t even nominated for an Emmy here, She has a very bad habit of over-playing the dramatic scenes. As a sketch comedian, that style of acting works well. But in a piece like this, which veers uncomfortably from comedy to drama, often within the same scene, it can be terribly off-putting. Watch Carol cry out to Mother Mary in “Pete n Tillie” some time, you will see what I mean.

I was a little kid, watching this in real time. I fell asleep every Friday night after The Hulk and then Dukes of Hazzard. By the time of Dynasty or Dallas, I was being carried by my parents or my older brother to my bed. Both were moral and am glad to say that we were poor but it was the best. Both of my parents worked to make sure we had what we need. My mother doesn’t have the fond memories that I have. She worked so hard and always had a fire when we got up. My dad is gone but my mother is a saint

Im 40 yeats old and for all my accomplishments at 20 years old most people would never accomplish yet my parents allways put me down and never once said I love you.its tragic that some wounds especially abuse as a child weather verbal physical or sexual never truly heal you will allways have trust issues with people and yourself. See Eunice's family in a sense put guilt on her for trying to leave better herself in a way they never could..so it made Eunice have guilt amd therefore ruined her life

Wow this had me in tears. That’s too much realness. Utterly understand her pain. Good for Phil standing up and shining a loving light on her. It’s was needed. I wanted her to run for opportunity. Sometimes being codependent is an unbreakable addiction.
I’d like to believe Phil came back and said “hell no Eunice! Let Ellen take care of auntie - you’re coming with me!!!” And Eunice ended up in LA with her brother and didn’t act, but collaborated with him on a book about her life with Momma, and it got turned into a movie.

I remember well when this aired on tv back in 1982. For someone like Carol, this chance to fully tell Eunice's story must have been not only an actor's dream to expand on a character but I'm sure it was therapeutic for her as well being that her upbringing parallels some of the situations in Eunice's life. This should definitely be on dvd and of course it begs for a optional commentary track from Carol herself. A real heartbreaking story. Isn't it strange that we all have come across a Eunice in our lives?

I'm currently in a funk myself and feel that all I've done so far in my life is fail and disappoint others. But after listening to the lecture Philip gave Eunice, I realize that I haven't really been a failure at all. I'm just experiencing an obstacle right now. With the right help and the willingness to work hard, I know I will pull out of this funk and things will improve.

I saw it way back in 1982 when it first aired. Now looking back, I realize how brilliant this was. As many have written, the Mama's Family skits on the tv series were a bit more light hearted but with serious undertones and with serious doses of reality. The family relationships were shown to be believable, which is what makes this special so real and true. Thank you for uploading this so fans today could see it for the first time or rediscover it.

This whole masterpiece is a jolting roller-coaster ride of emotions. Highest of highs, lowest of lows. I've always felt partial to Eunice for some reason. I always felt she settled for less because she didn't have the self-esteem needed to propel her foward in life. This piece also subtly touches on mild verbal abuse from family members. Eunice seems to be the main punching bag for the whole family. See how Mama treats the other 2 siblings with affection, expecting nothing but the best for them? Whereas Eunice is the "disappointment" of the family, and is made to feel as such. But in the end, she is the spit and glue of the whole family dynamic. Spectacular acting from ALL cast members, here. Thank you for this nostalgic show piece!
I remember seeing this when it first aired and was disappointed that it wasn't funnier. Now, 33 years later, I can appreciate it so much more!
leland frame Life and adulthood helped clarify a few things for me too. What a sad vision of Eunice. My heart ached for her as this tragic character.
Ieland, it indeed was not as funny as the CB Skits featuring Mama, but it still had funny places throughout, that were reminiscent of that show. Plus I think the whole idea was for it NOT to be non-stop laughs, because there was a seriousness about it coming up at the end & was downright touching & a real tear-jerk-er. Especially, if you ever had a Mama, LIKE Eunice's' "Mama" as I had, & then you lost her. I was so able to identify with the entire last part. So, it would have been awkward if the laughs were non-stop leaving one crying in a very different & good way -- laughing 'til you cry] & then suddenly got touching & serious at the end to be something completely different. It had to be eased into, because the END was the whole point of "Eunice". FINALLY, getting her big break, only to be sucked back in. Mama, was definitely NOT at her best & funniest, but that would have only distracted from the plot was headed, something more serious & with a message.

I grew up watching reruns of Carol Burnett and Mama's Family, but until today I never knew this was the basis for Mama's Family.
This is really ensemble acting at it's finest. I love Carol Burnett and Vicki Lawrence (and am a fan of Mama's Family), but the unsung hero here is Ken Berry. The way he portrayed the extremes of character between Philip and eventually Vint in Mama's Family are really a testament to his acting ability.
Watched him on TV all my life. Never knew Ken Berry was such an excellent actor. Fine work, Mr. Berry.

My father Harvey Korman directed this 90 teleplay which was considered the pilot for MF.I thought my dad brought out the best in all of them.The show ranked 7th for the week.My dad loved working with Carol,Betty and Ken,Vicki..I thought Ken was stronger as philip then McDowell and I thought that Vinton was a waste of his talent.My dad hated playing Ed on Burnett and in this teleplay.He felt the accent was forced and not convincing.He also hated being abused by Eunice and mama.

I had the honor of meeting your dad and George Segal outside the Beverly Hilton back in ... ? Late 1990's or so? They were just hanging outside talking and cutting up, the even going on inside hadn't started yet. Your dad - both men - we incredibly gracious and kind, signing and autograph each and shaking my hand. From The Great Gazoo to Carol's Show to his hilarious genius working with Mel Brooks ... man, heaven gained so much when that warm, funny, big-hearted man passed.
That was a great performance by all, especially Carol! Seeing those old show previews takes me back to being a kid in the seventies with only three networks to watch, not counting PBS, of course.

Wow, I remember bits of this from when I was a kid. The memory of Eunice learning Fluffy’s fate is about only thing that stuck with me and was completely hysterical.
Now, 40 years later, I’m fighting back tears at my desk watching that very same iconic scene. What a powerful mix of comedic drama with total and utter despair. Probably about the same as the lives of 99.9% of humanity. One for the ages.

It's so interesting how our perspectives change once we get older, isn't it! As little kids, we saw the whole Family series of skits hilarious, but now that we are older and have gone through life a bit, we see the toxicity and accompanying behaviors that we can relate to from our own life experiences, and we are heartbroken watching it.
They ate him for supper. Lol 😂
This iteration of Eunice is PARTICULARLY depressing because the audience thinks Phil has a point that Eunice is always making excuses not to try in life, that she's using others to avoid failing, and then at the tail end you realize she's not scapegoating, or making excuses, but literally feels like other people need her in order to survive. She's such a sad character because she's probably the most empathetic and altruistic, and she gives until she explodes, making her appear to be the most cold and self-serving.
Phil, who appears to be the objective and wise savior character, CONSISTENTLY withdraws from the environment when anyone needs anything. He appears to be the most stable, but it's only a façade; he never deals with the family issues head on.
The healthiest part of the entire film was when Eunice - without blowing up or going into histrionics - tells Ed after the funeral he should leave.
I disagree about Phil. Leaving his sick family was the only healthy choice and he was the only one clear-sighted enough to see it. He's more than willing to help Eunice in the only way that's meaningful, by getting her the hell out of there.

@Maurice When I wrote "Perhaps it's time I re-read The Color Purple" I was anticipating I might have forgotten some pretty important things - turns out one of those things was the fact "Pa" in the early part of the novel was an imposter. So I missed your reference when you cited "Pa no Pa" and my oversight was compounded by the fact I've never been very focused on Phil or who was playing him whether it was Roddy McDowall or whoever replaced him. So whoosh, the whole "Pa no Pa/Phil no Phil" joke went right by me.
What a great cast. The emotion, the caregiver. Ken Berry performance in response to Eunice. Superb. Yes I had a I want to talk to my mom experience and Carol portrayed perfectly.
All I can say about this was WOW!!!!! I remember this when I was 11 years old, but never saw it. I was always a fan of The Carol Burnett show. I now see Eunice in a whole different light and all the struggles that she went through. This was definitely a top notch performance. There should be more shows that have writers like the ones they had during this period.
I know it is silly but I cried for Eunice at the end. Like so many of us, she had a dream.

Mostly never to be appreciated for it. Its easy to turn your back on those who need you. But then, you gotta live with yourself. And the fact you turned ypur back on loved ones.. No win situation.
Truth is, though, she had no real chance of succeeding. (NOTE: Shows of the time were often unrealistic such a regard.) While moving away from Raytown would probably have been good for her, she'd have been destined to living in her brother's home and pursuing a typical Hollywood career as a waitress.
Ken Berry is a very good dramatic actor. I'm not sure he ever got the credit he deserved in that genre.
He just passed away, and it's hard to imagine he's gone. He seemed like a very contended, positive, nice guy. F-Troop was such a good platform for Berry's talents in comedy and physicality. It's startling how well he plays the drama here. He really was a talented man.

The hardest par to watch of this special, is the last segment (when Mama has died) it is SO genuinely heartfelt and emotional, I can't help but to cry, it is spectacularly well performed!
It took me years to watch this and even now watching the entire things it's like I have lost. This was the best acting to this day, to actually have such a powerful piece that is still relevant to today.

I’m the youngest of four daughters. I graduated college, including 9 months of school in France, and served 11 years in the USAF, including 3 months in Saudi Arabia. My three older sisters married right after high school graduation and had children. They mocked me when I left for college, said I wouldn’t make it. Did the same when I joined the military. All they did was fortify my determination to make something of my life. It takes willpower and self-actualization to turn away from the trappings of home and set your mind on greater heights. Don’t expect everyone to understand or support you. But don’t let them hold you back or give you excuses for not moving on. It’s your life! Live it!

We got a glimpse of Thelma's mother in an episode of MAMA'S FAMILY. Mother Crowley was a dreadful woman. No wonder Thelma turned out quite like her.

I never knew about this TV special, so glad I found it on TH-cam by watching "The Family" sketches...But My Lord, is it sad... I remember my grandmother crying out after losing her mother "I want my mama"-That made me weep out loud... I fear losing my grandmother who's 83, and I can't even bear the thought of losing my own mama...this was so sad
This program really fleshes out the storyline and helps us understand Eunice. It is really more drama than comedy. Very undermentioned and underrated. That ending tears me up every time!
I don't remember the movie but just watched it. This was a masterpiece.. Great acting.. funny movie but tragic.. I cried for Eunice at the end.. her character was relatable when realized she was used by her family and really had low self esteem and self doubt.

Philip was the only one who ever genuinely loved Eunice. Everyone else took advantage of her--especially her sister Ellen. It was Eunice's DEVOTION to her family that caused her grief--SO SAD!

I watched CB when I was a kid, but by the time 1982 rolled around I was a senior in HS ready to graduate and join the military, I had no clue what was still on TV. This was an awesome thing to watch. CB never disappoints!

Bravo to the writers, actors, costume and set designers for this series, and the movie finale. They are a towering study in dysfunction - a real tour de force!
Eunice had the talent to be someone great. She was just never encouraged--by either of her parents, the people who should have cared the most.
I just love how they did this to give the family skits a finale, and it did not disappoint. Such brilliant performances, the mix of comedy and drama, an ending both sad and hopeful. It was a real treat watching all these again. I appreciate it so much more now as an adult.

She was supposed to be calling her job to quit, but instead she called someone she knew she could use as an excuse for not trying. For too many people, our dreams will never be more than just a dream. . . But the acting and story was 🔥 ❤
The ending breaks my heart. Eunice and Ellen fight viciously. When Eunice cries for her mama, it makes me think about my late mom. I love the Mama series that followed. I miss the series.

If their hadn’t been the Carol Burnett show which made the spin off Eunice their wouldn’t have been a Mamas Family..it was a win win for everyone. Carol Burnett is my all time fave woman comedian… she paved the way for so many female comedians… she is a legend. All these amazing people are. 👏🏼👏🏼

This was made when I was a child. Watching it in my 50's and I'm glued. I'm amazed by the writing. This story was predicated upon some very dark stuff. Excellent work by all involved.

Carol Burnett is just phenomenal....what an incredible talent! Over the years she created some of the most hysterically funny characters in TV history but I think her finest character was most definitely Eunice. In this special you really saw Carol's talent as a dramatic actress as well. Vicki Lawrence's portrayal of Mama is amazing as well and it's interesting how that character changed from being so mean and bitter in the Family sketches and in this special to a little softer but still with an edge on the network series to endearing and borderline sweet in the syndicated show. Such great enduring characters. This special really shows the inner workings of a dysfunctional family such as many of us have dealt with and even though this was originally done for comedy there is a very definite realness to these different characters and a depth and complexity to them particularly from the character of Eunice as well as Mama. This one was definitely dark....the family sketches on The Carol Burnett Show were funny with some dark undertones but this was definitely darker and got more into the character's minds. Especially Eunice's. I found it very relatable.

I can relate and the tough part for people like Eunice is breaking away from those dysfunctional families. Still something I am working on myself. It's tough to deal with the drama and overbearing parents but it's even harder to go out into the real world but it is necessary. Otherwise life ends up full of what ifs like Eunice's does.
The character of Eunice was always the tragic part of life in Mama's Family sketches and even in the series. When Eunice showed up, i was always as a character that was mildly amusing but with something dark behind it. For a sister like Ellen to tell Eunice what became of Fluffy was an evil way to hurt her to the core, for the simple pleasure of being evil. The series they made called Mama's Family featured an occasional Eunice who was not so hurt and tragic. She was just made an ordinary loser, someone who could never attain her dreams because of this and that. I really enjoyed Mama's Family, even though they made the late Ken Berry a nincompoop, but he loved his wife Naiomi and that was his redemption. Mama was less cruel in the series. I never saw this production featuring Eunice's life. I only saw it now in 2019. Carol Burnett was and is a wonderful actress and comedienne, and I wonder how she felt about the dark sides of Eunice's life. I think it's also remarkable that she allowed Vicki Lawrence to develop her character of Mama to the point of creating her own series. I miss the old Carol Burnett shows but I also miss Mama. I wish it had continued on even further. It's like a landmark of American family life, and it's entertaining. Just my 2 cents.
I actually saw a mamas family reunion on Vicki Lawrence's talk show. On it Vicki explained that after this movie came out Carol Burnett said to her to make this show and run with Mama.
So maybe Carol reached her limit of catharsis from playing the character. Maybe she knew Vicki had potential as a comedianne and gave her the opportunity to make people laugh all over.
Maybe that's just me being sentimental. But you do bring up marvelous points. Creating characters, even comedic ones, usually borrow from something inside of us. Good, bad, light, dark, we all take from things we know.

He was hilarious as Vint! He played Mama's middle-aged, overgrown little baby boy wonderfully.

Vinton was a moron but he had a big heart. And his character of Vinton was more appropriate for the eventual family sitcom setting instead of this Phillip which fit this more serious comedy drama here. He was great either way.
The reason Eunice acted the way she did, is because her family treated her so rotten, she never heard any positive encouragement and her mother Thelma never even took an interest in Eunice's life, therefore she was ignored and treated like she didn't exist, which only made Eunice feel depressed, sad, and withdrawn. On the Carol Burnett show the character of Mama was really an abusive mother to Eunice she was very emotionally abusive. I am glad when the sitcom Mama's Family came to be, she was toned down and more likeable and funny instead of mean and so emotionally abusive. So again, the reason wy Eunice is the way she is is mainly because of how her mother abused her, that's how it ALWAYS happens and then the mother/father doesn't want to take the blame or responsibility to repair the damage, they act like they didn't do anything. It's sad!!

Justin W You are obviously right. I've read tons of comments by ppl reporting how they were treated like Eunice, men and women, but not one comment by anyone saying they were Thelma to their child. No responsibility, but then abusive ppl never admit to being wrong or even to having done anything. The child is crazy, bad, or telling lies.
Life is hard for many of us, but we have to try as hard as we can to move forward. I've tried to create the most positive life as I can for my own daughter. It's helped me a lot, too. I'm sure some of you know just what I mean.
No, not a narcissist. She was herself raised by mean parents, the European way, probably would have been German stock. But she was, in her way, protecting Eunice from failure and the crack-up that would have caused. It was always made clear, I thought, that Eunice had no real talent. This is the small-town way of thinking and behaving. Ignorance is misery.

The mystery to me was how Philip was so good-natured, successful, generous, and SANE enough to get out. Unless knowing his father's life and death made him desperate to avoid the same fate? To save himself? 😣

Carol Burnett was a wonderful actress with a wide range of expressions and talent. This era of TV seems to me to be unparalleled, with many wonderful actors and actresses. That is why they are called actors. Able to convince an audience that what the audience is seeing is real. Thank you, Carol, Vicky, Harvey, Ken, Don and countless others. Also the people behind the scenes. A complete team effort. Great work !

This was a good movie, but rather sad as well. It's not hard to see how Eunice was so messed up. So many of us can relate to her family dynamic. I remember how unhappy I was when she caved in to her aunt when she finally had the chance to go live her dream. Hopefully she did it anyway.

The ending was sad, but it was complete stupidity and delusional for her to move to LA to be an actress. Her brother was indulging her pipe dream merely because that's what family ought to do, help one another no matter what.
I was never a fan of the family skit, but I loved this. It’s amazing to see things from Eunice’s point of view. She really did get the raw end of the deal. Harvey Korman did an amazing job directing this. He made the characters relatable. Thanks for posting this!
