    Same accident happened in 2008 in Mirabilandia, Italy. A guy lost his hat while riding Katun, a B&M invert, and later jumped over a fence to retrieve it, when he was hit in the head by the legs of a 15 years old girl riding the coaster. The girl even reported leg and knee injuries, it’s sad to think how someone’s recklessness can be so harmful not only for themselves, but also for other guiltless people. The park wasn’t held responsible for the accident though, since court found that the park had adequately indicate that hopping over the fence was prohibited.

  • @codymakk
    @codymakk 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    A ride operator has reported that two riders had some scratching on their legs and another rider had blood on them. I have not seen anything reported from anyone that was on the train making contact though. Nelson also walked through two restricted area gates and past 4 restricted area signs. I go 1-2 times a week and they do have a strict policy, and before each ride they tell you to secure your items. They have bins to put stuff in, they allow fanny packs on rides. My fiance and I carry stuff in a fanny pack because it’s easy to unclip and put in the side bin. If the ride doesn’t have one, the restraints will still go over the fanny pack. Buy a locker or secure your things in a fanny pack or something it’s not hard. I feel bad for his two kids who were there with him when this happened, his family, the guests and operators that witnessed the event. It’s is hard to feel remorseful for the one who found their fate in such a blatant act of entitlement. I understand from his perspective that losing keys is very stressful, but that’s why they stress to secure items over the speaker before each ride and signs in the queue. They also gave him assurance that they will find his keys, but will have to wait until the park is closed or the ride is no longer in operation. At that point he only had to wait 2 hours for close. Maybe another hour to retrieve his keys at lost and found. These rides take a while to walk through, they’d lose a lot of money and every ride would spend most of its time down if they had to constantly go out for someone’s shit every time someone dropped something on a ride. Lastly, that was my thoughts as well. Obviously you can see and hear the train coming and it’s on a set path so common sense should say to stay out of the way. He had to be thinking the train would go over him standing before the grim discovery that the trains come a lot closer to the ground than he thought.

  • @Coppertine_
    @Coppertine_ 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    There is a reason why Australia has one of the strictest loose article policies in the world. Every ride requires you to place your items in a locker, or a loose articles bin at the station (even items in zipped up pockets or glasses secured with straps) before you even hop into the train. It takes longer to board yes, but it helps prevent evacuations mid ride or some dumb person jumping a fence to grab an item they dropped.
    I honestly think it should be a commonality across themeparks across the world to stop this from happening.

  • @TheMuni777

    I don't think people are jumping fences for inverts more often than other rides necessarily. I just think these deaths only happen with B&M inverts (so far) because they're probably the most dangerous restricted areas out of any ride type, and it's not nearly as easy to get away with. I personally have seen several people jump the fence to retrieve items or to skip the line for several other ride types, so I'm sure this happens more often than some would think. But the odds of successfully navigating an invert's restricted areas are much lower than say, a B&M hyper, where you'd basically have to be standing on the track to be hit. It's also a very common feature with B&M inverts to have several low to the ground moments, and those don't really happen a lot with other types of rides.

    Years ago, I lost my cellphone on Intimidator 305 at Kings Dominion (Kings Island’s sister park). I asked the park employees about it and they said they’d look for it. Long story short: they never got back to me about it. Also, not once did I think about going into the restricted area to look for my phone. Why? Because the area is restricted for a big reason! Lesson: if you don’t want to risk losing a valuable item on a ride, don’t have it on your person when riding!

      Pretty sure this 100% the reason. The only way I could see someone getting hit by a coaster that has the train above the track would be on wide trains like dives or wings, or if they actively climb on the track. Inverts are one of the few rides you can get actively in the way of the ride without climbing on top of the track.

    As a person who was terrified to ride coasters for many years until I overcame it and became an enthusiast, it was common sense and through discovery about how often accidents happen on the ride itself (super super rare) when it's malfunction on the coasters part. Always felt proud of not letting my fear from keeping me off them. So, seeing this makes me mad. I don't even know why anyone hasn't learned gravity and loose articles are a bad mix. I never take anything but myself and glasses (with a chain to keep it on during) if I plan on going to an amusement park.
    It is already unnecessary to take keys with you on a ride or not keep them in a bin. There is no excuse for people in this instance, and this just is so traumatic for the family, riders, and park operators/owners. Nobody should have their day ruined just cause someone couldn't wait until KI was shut down.
    Parks are going to be even stricter with enforcing no loose objects rules than they already are because of stuff like this cause someone doesn't want to take a few extra seconds to put their possessions somewhere secure.

    While my heart goes out to the family of the man killed and especially his 2 kids that were with him, this really sucks.
    I say that because every incident has repercussions. Just watch. Now this is the 2nd incident with Cedar Fair (once in 2015 on Raptor) with B&M inverts.
    I read a report from one of the investigators on this incident and it was talking about liability on Cedar Fair’s end. Of course I place 100% blame on the man for his decision making, but it sounds like they are trying to investigate any kind of liability on Cedar Fair.
    The report stated a comment that said, and I’m paraphrasing here, “while patrons are def responsible for their actions if they ignore signs and jump fences, the park should also be responsible for not allowing those situations to even be possible”. They went on to say maybe some solutions would be razor wire on the fences or like a trip wire that would immediately shut down the coaster like they have with other sensors that do the same for other reasons. They brought up the fact that some people can’t read or understand English.
    I feel like that’s insane myself. I mean if you can’t read or understand English, I get it. Does that mean that you walk across an interstate in a busy city? So many examples come to mind. It’s common sense right?

    I’ve heard a lot of speculation about why B+M inverts tend to be the center of these situations. My thoughts:
    1) B+M inverts often swoop close to the ground from high drops, giving little warning for the trespasser to get out of the way.
    2) because it is an inverted coaster, the lack of floor and side walls of the car make it more likely for pocket items like phones and keys to wiggle loose.
    3) B+Ms often have large, sprawling layouts, or are tucked into corners, making it more likely for trespassers to think they can get away with jumping the fence. The other major invert supplier, Vekoma, keeps their layouts compact, with the queues often woven through the layout, making it harder for trespassers to trespass without being seen by operators or people waiting in the queue.
    4) inverted coasters create a feeling of “safety” for trespassers standing under them, because they don’t perceive that they are in the way of the coaster with the track some 10-12ft above them. With traditional coaster, the trespasser would be hit only if standing on or near the track, which is far more avoidable, as the track is at body-level to the trespasser.

    Actually makes complete sense that it's inverted roller coasters where these types of accidents occur. In conventional trains, the most likely way for fence hoppers to get hit is if they were to jump up onto the track itself.

    As a huge roller coaster enthusiast, Im tired of these idiots. Dont feel sorry at all when someone who actively chooses to disobey an order and gets served the consequences of their actions. The true victims are the ones in the train who hit him. Im over it. I refuse to live in a world where rollercoasters are looked poorly upon rather than the poor decisions of others causing death.

  • @rexcoasters
    @rexcoasters 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You hit the nail on the head, it 100% keeps happening to inverts because these people do not realise they are in the path of the train. The only ideal solution to this if it was really necessary would be maybe painting the ground where there is not enough clearance for someone beneath the track. The ground could be painted directly below the track in these near-to-ground areas in bright red/yellow hazardous lines. Shouldn't have to be necessary, but if it happened twice at the same park I could totally see them doing something like that.
    Or you could always electrify the fence...

It hit my leg and I was like what's that? Later found out it was his phone. They told him the same. They could not search for it until closing. We waited but they said they could not find it. I think that people are idiots for hopping over the fence, & most theme parks close at 10PM, & the incident happened at 8PM. I get it if it was just after opening, but it was only 2 hours and it was not even a boring line, because you could enjoy the amusement park for 2 hours and then get your keys, but instead, he did a stupid thing, & won a stupid prize. I also want to highlight that the news is also stupid for blaming the park for causing the incident when it was obviously the guest's fault.

    I do believe it has to do with how B&M inverts look visually. They do give the illusion of even if the train does come you could duck and it would miss you and the wideness of the track hides the height of the train.
    However anyone with common sense knows there is only about 3 feet between the train and the ground and you will most likely get hit even if you duck. I mean even some inverts like Talon get within 1 foot from the ground.

    Don't wish death on anyone but the guy definitely made the mistake...the fact that his kids and others were trying to tell him not to...yet he remained stubborn and decided to go his way anyway.
    I was there the day before and my last ride on Banshee was pretty much 24 hours before the incident. I was wrapping up my first of 3 days at Cedar Point when I saw the news, sent chills down my spine knowing I was there day before. Was sad to hear of the incident and knowing the guy passed but gonna have to side with the park, employees, ride manufacturer on this one. We can't have nannies at the lockout areas saying "no-no-no, don't go in there!" An 8-foot-tall fence should be more than sufficient to tell people to stay out, restricted area. As I say (in a nod to Mystic Timbers..."Don't hop the fence, this is a restricted area. Don't hop the fence...don't hop the fence (garbled audio) hop the fence. hop the fence. hop the fence"
    I've lost a set of keys before on a coaster. It's not fun esp when you don't have a way home. I waited til after ride was closed for night and had maintenance take a look. During the discovery of my keys missing, I had already made arrangements to get my spare brought out to me so I could at least get home. A few days later, my keys were actually found on the roof of a neighboring building. And I'm still alive to share the experience of losing a set of keys on a coaster. I've also had a phone slip out on a ride which landed on a brake run catwalk. Had found it the next day when I came in for work (as I work at that said park) - had contacted maintenance who was able to lock out the ride for me so I could retrieve it, even if it was on a catwalk 15 feet away from the station.

    I know it sounds like we are cold and unfeeling about the passing of Mr Nelson but we are not. I am sure I can speak for everyone when I say nobody wants to see someone lose their life at a park even when that person does something this stupid. I was hoping he would recover and I do sympathize with his family. My heart goes out to him then but like you said, it’s hard to feel bad for someone who willfully entered a dangerous restricted area with the ride active and a train on the course. I am positive he had no idea where his keys landed. If he lost them in a moving coaster they could have been anywhere. The fact is people are unsympathetic because he expected the staff to shut down the ride with lots of guests waiting and go down in the area and search for his keys. When he was told they can’t just shut down the ride and go look he go upset and decided to bypass the restricted area. I lost a pair of expensive designer sunglasses last year on a roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain. I wanted them back of course. I was told the same thing the staff at Kings Island said. Wait until the park closes and then check back. If the item was spotted before them they’d turn them in to lost and founds I went to lost and found and opened a case so they’d continue looking even after I left the park. Well I never got them back but it never would have occured to me to go bypassing the restricted area to try and find them. It’s not worth it. No keys, sunglasses, wallet, hat etc is worth your safety or your life.

    Not harsh at all. It was 100% Mr. Nelson's fault. Even in the highly unlikely scenario of somebody breaking into a restricted area and missing ALL signage and warnings, simple common sense or taking a moment to think would tell one to wait until the ride's not on the course to search for valuables or to wait until the end of the day when park staff could search for their valuables.

    I might add with the Flight Deck incident that the man was from Mexico and only spoke Spanish so he couldn't read the signs in English. That being said, it was still his fault.
    Also, I relate the stricter rules and changes being caused by a few idiots to Dragon Challenge (formerly Dueling Dragons). People kept throwing objects at the other train and some people got injured including a rider losing sight in an eye. So they had to stop the dueling aspect. I still liked it when I visited but I would've liked it even more than Hulk (which was my favorite in the park) if it was still dueling. I wonder do they now have to use electric (not enough to kill but just enough to give an uncomfortable shock) or barbed wire fences to keep people out?
