- Stripers and Summer Flounder (Fluke) were joined by weakfish and bluefish on an excellent morning of fishing. Bucktails and 6-ounce flutter spoons caught all of the fish. Supports several chapters in my book, Fishing the Edge - Techniques and Tales from Surf, Boat, and Kayak: amzn.to/3TQtFvq.

ive been fishing the gut and the race for around 40 years, always one of my best spots over time!!!
I can't believe it! John Skinner on left hand retrieve. Welcome to the club :)
Left on spin and right on conventional.
It's halibut and striper season (we don't actually have a season, but that's semantics) here in Northern California. The action is RED HOT where I live, I've been limiting every time I go shore fishing. Good luck John, and keep em coming!
How big so the halibut get?
@@easterneuropeantracksuit3312 California halibut are much like the fluke of the east coast but they get bigger. Our minimum size limit is 22 inches. Usually anywhere from 5-20 pounds is common but they also regularly get upwards of 30 and 40 pounds.
Pole-cam is a great addition. Thanks for the great Long Island fishing content.👍🏻
Gotta love the race
It's like reading Matt Ahern articles but I get to watch it all happen on video. I love learning by watching your content.
All the fish were good, but seeing that weakfish was great! Bods well for this season of angling. Cheers!
It's not the size of the boat that counts, it's how you use your rod.
Need to put this on a T-Shirt!!! 😂
It's not the size of the boat, it's the size of the fish in the cooler that matters.
I actually take this rod out now for sea bass fishing on wrecks - and it is fantastic. Actually caught my PB sea bass on it over the winter at around 24" and it handled great
Awesome. Thanks for sharing that!
every day on my way to work I was able to see sunrise from the causeway between East Marion and Orient. however, what I really liked is watching the moon rise from the same spot. i knew when i left i would miss that place but I had no idea how much. you have a great job.
Nice Strippers John! Great video.
Awesome video! I think that’s me on the sea doo fish pro haha
Was great seeing you out on the water that day. Watching you fish live action versus video was great to see. You still make it look easy. You definitely focus a lot more on the fish finder/GPS then I thought from watching the video's. You also make very very good use of the trolling motor since there were times the drift that day was very slow.
What a day for the fluke father.
You go John! keep doing your thing!
Fantastic fishing! Congratulations on another Grand Slam!
Sure seems like a lot of boat traffic. Amazing that the fish cooperated.
Another great video I'm always learning from your videos
great videos man!! ive picked up some new techniques for sure...just picked up my first spoon and cant wait to use it
You are the fish slayer. It brings a tear to my eye! I'm from Patchogue, now live in Palm Beach
love your videos keep up the good work!
Nice seatrout
hey John
WHY ARE YOU DOWN ON SEA ROBINS?
get some big robins
filet as usual..
they have bines down center but you cut that out you have two finger sized pieces of white fish
wet with water or milk and press into breadcrumbs to coat
deep fry the fish sticks till golden
wife of a nj fishing boat told me rhis so I tried it
NOW SEA ROBINS ARE A FAVE CATCH
I feel the same way the first time i dropped down a flutter spoon. “That was too easy!” Lol
Update John. The blues have invaded the Western LI Sound near Port Chester.
Got the knee hacked open and flushed out so, the week is mine! I’ll hit the Sound or the Hudson this week if it kills me 😂
"Bucktail Bait's" says hi, down here in Grant, Fl....feel free to stop by when your down South.
I appreciate the Florida greetings!
The Mecca of fishing. Montauk
Beautil day of fishing! My question is why do you wrap the line around your hand instead of netting?
I like to avoid the net. It doesn't do the fish any good and they tangle.
Mr Skinner as always great content. So much to learn from your videos. But I have a concern. I see you wrapping your hand with the fishing line, my worry is that one day you will get a bone deep cut from the line. I was taught to use a rag or a glove, but never wrap your hand with fishing line or rope. Safety first.
Thanks for the concern. I'm only wrapping 80# mono or fluoro. Plenty thick to not cut me. Sometimes I'll wrap 50 but I'm a little more careful.
Hi John, nice content as always.
How heavy is your boat, I have a 16ft StarCraft Mariner Aluminum always afraid of choppy water…
That's a great boat. Mine is 850# and is very deep and wide. This is my 4th 16-ft aluminum, including 2 starcrafts.
Fire man
Went out the other day to the race on and outgoing tide got skunked seemed like every boat did ended up shooting it over to 6 mile reef the next day on and incoming tide and probably caught 30 in slot stripers and some bigger ones as well you should have seen them blowing up top water in 60 feet of water
Nice move. I've only been over there once (6-mile).
How close to six mile and on the NY side I’m assuming….?
I gotta try that spoon. I found others were a little light in weight.
After using this one, I don't want to lose the others. Now they're hard to get.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing the reason for that 80lb leader. You should hopefully hang on to it. 👍🏼
Do you use a Tactical Anglers Clip with the spoon?
Was that Halkias at the 1:00 mark? Sounded like him answering your "How's it going?"
Yes.
Threw a curve ball in there with the 80# leader huh?
Standard in those eastern deep rips.
is that montauk light house in the background?
No.
Damn, that's my video I am uploadings title lol. Minus the bluefish... which I don't mind.
Just finished cleaning the fish from yesterday. The "big" one had a small porgy and small weakfish in its stomach. Not enough though to make the difference between 2nd and third place, but that was one hungry fish trying to eat a 6-ounce bucktail and 6-inch grub with a stomach like that!
@@JohnSkinnerFishing yeah amazing how they will still eat sometimes. I will definitely be remembering to keep a contender's mouth sealed. That was brilliant.
What's the advantage of the swing hook vs a fixed one on your jigs?
More action, especially on heavier jigs. Fluke are far less likely to shake off. You can change hooks if they get beat up on the bottom.
Great video as always. What knot do you use to tie 80lb leader to 30lb braid?
I go through a high-quality barrel swivel.
It seems like when bass fishing from a boat in your videos you're almost alway using a bucktail, spoon, 3 way rig or some form of bottom rig. Do you not fish top water from the boat?
I fishing deep rips, so rarely topwater.
Pretty unrelated to the video, but does putting a metal leader on scare away striped bass? I want to put one on for bluefish, but it’s probably not worth it if it kills any chance of striped bass. Thanks
It can discourage bass. I never use them.
Would you replace the accurist with the maxel hybrid across the board (including for fluke)? Or is the Maxel reserved for the heavier applications/rods?
I don't use the maxel for fluke and I don't use the accurist for bass.
It’s been a while since you did a catch and cook video.
In honor of gay pride month maybe you can use a recipe that has a little more pizzazz and panache than usual.
It’s only 11:00 AM and I’m already on my 4th Bud Light !!! Cheers !!!!
What happened to the etec?!
Too small for this boat. Sold it.
Hi John what trolling motor do you use I want the same one can I have the make and model please thank you

60-inch, 24V, 80# thrust minn kota terrova riptide.
Mr skinner do you bleed your flounder out after catching before ice
Yes.
What is your favorite tasting cold water fish that you catch?
Sea Bass.
Have u done any fluking in your sound spots yet wondering if the sand eels are around this year thanks
Yes. Can 5 on Wednesday. Lots of sandeels and I had a limit but the bite was a grind. It was right after those hard easterlies so that might have messed it up. They did well there a couple of weeks ago.
@John Skinner Fishing thank you gonna have to try thesound been too busy with weakfish
What marina are you out of? Greenport?
Yes.
Maxels are not good reels at all. My dads gears went out on his hybrid in a week just catching Black Sea bass
What kind of weight are you using?
3-ounce bucktail, 6-ounce spoon.
This at the gut?
The bass part.
Like fishing in a parking lot smh doesn't anyone work anymore?!
