  • Decided to advance the timing a bit on my Shovelhead. I originally had it times with the timing mark in the center of the inspection hole but, after talking to different mechanics and doing some research of my own about these engines, I have found that they run better with the timing being a bit advanced. Hope you all enjoy! And maybe some of you will find this helpful.

    Hi thx for the video, I have a 73 stroked SH
    when i static timed mine i put the TDC mark on the left of center while looking in the hole. I saw that you set yours to the right side of the hole ( rear of bike ) wanting to confirm if i was wrong in my setting? Ty miketerry

      You aren't necessarily wrong, it's mostly a preference thing. Setting the timing mark to the front (or left) of the site hole will slightly retard your timing meaning that your spark will be a bit delayed causing the ignition to occur when the piston is already on it way back down; on the contrary, setting the timing mark to the right (rear) of the site hole will slightly advance your timing means the spark happens sooner, causing ignition to occur just before the piston reaches the top of the stroke, which in turn will give you slightly better performance. Neither way is wrong or right. Some guys like their timing slightly retarded because it requires less effort when kick starting and means its less likely to kick back. And some guys like it to be slightly advanced. Really just depends what you like personally... I personally like the slight improvement in performance when my timing is just a little bit advanced.

    I agree with several comments. Mark the generator flywheel with the crank TDC marks. Makes life so much easier (my new motto in life: Why struggle?) I have a BDL 1 1/2 belt on my '78 shovel, so I still have primary cover. So, I just used some paint dots. You would have to be more artistic. Dremel or file in grooves in the flywheel and a reference mark on the primary back plate somewhere. Then, some gold paint in the flywheel grooves (to match the brass). I put all the crank marks on mine. Front & rear TDC and the timimg light mark. Also, since the flywheel can be removed, I marked dots (with a center punch) into a crankshaft spline and a matching one on the flywheel so it can be put back on in the same place . My marks are where I can see them from the inspection cover.
    Note: my ULTIMA electronic IGN Static timing was approx a degree or so off from the timing light (at the recommended 2000 RPM) Sorry, can't remember if it was retarded or advanced too much.

    Hi Red-I'm one of those old dudes you were talking about ( 70's-and working on a bunch of diff motorcycles -cars-chainsaws-weed eaters-lawnmowers-etc for 60 yrs)--as for popping out the exhaust-flatheads-knucks- and pans were bad for popping--to stop it ya have to have 3 things--correct timing--correct carb setting and no exhaust pipe leaks--if pipes have a leak they will suck air into the pipe and mix with unburned gases and ignite causing a pop out the pipe---the way you are timing is fine--that's how i do it--center of hole is 35 degrees advance--rear of hole is 40 --forward just leaving hole is 30 degrees-----I'm starting to work on desktop and laptop computers now--since i have a bit of a background in electronics i like it---ain't gonna stop working on Harley's tho--I have a 1967 shovelhead with 91 cu in---a 1941 flathead 80 actually 84 cu in--a1962 KR engine--and a 1951 panhead engine--future projects---anyway good to see younger generation pick up where we left off--and being a woman is an extra bonus.

    Interesting so far. Did not grow up with any kind of mechanical influences, and have had little interest in it throughout my lifetime: never wanted to be a mechanic or build my own car or motorcycle. Still, there have been times when it was necessary to learn enough to do what I have to do based on circumstance or need. Much of that was needed when I was in the military: rebuilding valves, actuators, troubleshooting circuits, whatever. Anyway, back in the 80's I bought my first motorcycle as affordable transportation but ended up taking to it like a duck to water. If you really enjoy riding and working on your bikes, I hope you are able to continue doing those things. Thanks for sharing too.

    You are really knockin out the videos , nice setup . Air leak around exhausts can sometimes cause popin. Flames at night look cool as coming out the exhausts lol.

    Hi Angel, Love this video! Absorb all the wisdom you can from old mechanics and keep in mind those bikes each have their own unique personality. Follow your gut and what works for you. I had one that had a quirk with setting valve lash. Always checked the rear exhaust valve twice. No explanation, just that it wanted it that way, lol. The good old days. 😂

    Instead of the business with the small timing hole, why not copy the marks onto the rotor of the generator with respect to a fixed mark on the crankcase ? Apparently you can get info about ignition timing from the spark plugs, theres a video on Kevin Baxters channel about this.

    Remember, anytime you alter the stroke, compression ratio, or use a stronger camshaft, the entire ignition profile must be altered to suit. High compression and cammed motors like lots of advance up front, and achieve full advance quickly. The cam card and specs will help a good ignition person to work out the rate. Read those plugs. Most likely gonna need to richen the mixture a bit. About 1:6 fuel/air to start, then about 1/12.5 fuel/air at temperature. Ought to haul ass with that.

    Good job! I used to use the same method on points with a little test light. As soon as the points opened, the light would come on. Easy peasy.
    I’m going to use your wedge and block trick for getting the rear tire off the ground.

    Popping on deacceleration can be caused by exhaust gasket leaks or air entering the exhaust at some point, or a lean fuel mixture

    Years ago, Primo sold a belt drive motor pulley with 360 degree lines cut into it. Another company sold adhesive-backed degree stickers in various diameters to put on pulley. I have a 3in primary belt on my chopper, and made my own belt guard with an adjustable timing pointer. I took my pulley into work (toolmaker by trade) and cut 90 degrees worth of lines on my pulley using my milling machine rotary table.

    before i got a jack, i would use blocks of wood like you but you can do it yourself. just straddle the bike to hold it straight up and slip the 4x4 under. then lean one way and slip a 1x4 on one side then lean the other way and slip a 1x4 on the other side. you can kep repeating until you get as high as you want or run out of 1x4s

    Was interesting seeing how to set ignition timing on the S&S, the magnetic detection indicator light seems very helpful. Similarly to another person already wrote in your comments, earlier year engines with carburetors tended to crackle and pop on deceleration, especially at higher RPM, (like when descending a hill). Had a friend following me at night once, said there were blue flames out of the exhaust. Some manufacturers tried vacuum level sensed fuel cut off to the carb. venturi. [That feature may add more drivability trouble to the simplicity you have positively going for you, with this machine]. 👍👍

      I upped my intermediate jet a bet thinking that could be the issue with the popping, but I also sealed up my exhaust better too and advanced my timing a bit. It doesn't pop anymore but it didn't seem to be running as good riding around town so now I'm not sure if its the jet causing that or the timing! I have to adjust my fuel/air mix a bit too and make sure that's all good before I mess with the jets anymore. Might have to drop it back down to the .0295 and see how it runs again with the timing being advanced and the exhaust sealed up properly.

    i have an s&s 4.3/4 stroke lower end ,crank balance is important .timing is going to be time well spent.valve adjustment must be correct.i love the power , pass with no down shift great top end.

    Your bike is esthetically beautiful. I love the stock length springer (it looks stock length) with the disc brake, and what you've done with the rear finder and light. Everything on the machine is
    perfectly balance. It's one of the best looking bobbers I've ever seen. Laying the shocks slightly forward is perfect. Was that your idea? The whole thing is out of control. You're very lucky.

      Hey, thanks!! The front end is actually 4 under, and the shocks are set just about 3 inches back on the swing arm... I wanted the bike low so went with a shorter front end and then my dad pushed the shocks back to lower the rear end. My design my dad fabrication 😊

    Have to agree with bmp72 about marking the stator rotor at TDC and a mark on the case. Easy to find TDC that way, don't have to look down the little hole anymore. Can alway static or light time it that way. I used an engraver to mark my rotor. Either way, static or light will get you into the ballpark of your engine's running right. Every engine is just a little different, gears wear, timing will change. Poppinng on deceleration seems to be the nature of the beast. Even the new motorcycles do that after time. Nice videos-----you explain very well.

    Использовать "Подкат", чтобы приподнять мотоцикл над землёй - это простое и классное решение, раньше я об этом не задумывался. Я всегда поступал иначе: наклонял мотоцикл на боковую подножку, чтобы мотоцикл одним краем оторвался от земли, а потом подсовывал деревяшку или пень. Но я понимаю, что с чоппером такое не получится сделать, так как чаще их боковые подножки слишком слабые и расположены спереди рамы, будет трудно вывесить заднее колесо. Подкаты и разные предметы я использовал только для ремонта и обслуживания машины, если нет ямы в гараже.

    Matt’s dad Dan here. ML&R for you & your vids. I just got my first bike in a while, and I will try your homemade lift scheme. Since you didn’t ask ;-) I just acquired a very cherry 02 Daytona 955i but I fantasize about building a shovel powered chopper as one of my rides.
    Do a vid about how you got into biking. I’m sure people would watch it.
    Smart unconventional women make the rocking world go round. And you are obviously a fine example. I recognize it because the love of my life also is.
    I study a lot of biking vids. Yours are always fresh.

      @@RedRiderCanadaBC Yes. I’m scrambling now to line up insurance, MSF (which didn’t exist when I was riding before). Started out thinking an RE 650 would be nice, then another classic era Norton then I thought a Street Triple would be good. Finally came around to liking the fairing, the double vs. single rear swing arm. Not to mention even better performance
      Sub 11 ET. Thinking about playing with the sprockets. Already has Matt Capri cans and tune. 12K miles. If Capri is before your time, he held seven land speed records and was a Triumph dealer.
      Gixxers & Busas can have top end. I want solid acceleration in the 0-80 range.
      Modern bikes like modern performance cars have too much unnecessary crap. ABS maybe. But how do you fix a broken electronic subsystem short of part replacement?
      I’m a stubborn old sob and I intend to stay active and still have some fun. I’ve had a good life so far but I still have some gas in my tank if you know what I mean.
      If you see a silver blur in the S. Jersey Eastern PA area, it’ll probably be me. I’m all about getting some bang for my buck.
      So I am about to start having some real two wheeler fun again. I m retired now & the love of my life has come to realize I’m not a golf person or whatever. So you know when she asked what would I really want to do, I thought bikes. Had a very built Norton my first go around. Wanted more of the same. I like the fact that there are a lot of people who spend a lot to go fast, but I can go faster for less and with a fairly unique ride.
      Saw a thread about how big a bike an older returning rider can handle. When an 84 yo guy said he bought a Rocket 3 to start riding again I decided I could handle another 450 lb bike but one with a 21st century idea of power.
      Sort of like Bird on a Wire - hey, why not ask for more? Don Garlits is building very fast electric drag bikes at 90. And I’m pretty sure Sonny rode until he was up there. Heck some days I wake up still feeling like I’m 35.
      I knew my woman truly loves me when she told me to pick out a good bike, no further restrictions.
      I have a brother in law with a Sportster and a bagger who thinks I’m buying the Triumph out of nostalgia. I’m going to the strip anyway and I want to invite him to join me for grins. And to put Hinckley on his map lol.
      But I’ve added a sub 11 ET to my bucket list. I’ve got the bike, the reflexes and the desire. And the best part is my fairly much younger wife says I seen much younger. Life can be good if you work at it.
      Cool that you do a lot of your own wrenching. My wife & I get our haircut by a woman who grew up in family with two relatives who are mechanics and members of the local dominant, plus she has her own nicely set up HD. We get along well because “I know what time it is” and don’t ask stupid questions about the club. People who ride tend to be more interesting, at least to me. Sorry for bending your ear but I thought you might find it somewhat interesting.

    I used to build racing gocart engines. And if it was popping some when I let off gas I new the valves were sealing good. That is such a great bike .when you going to start on wideglide

    O rings between the heads and intake manifold can cause over lean cough. Easy to detect. Spray a little plastic safe contact cleaner on the manifold junctions. It won't harm paint (plastic safe) and if it causes an rpm drop there is a leak

    I tried both ways red and still comes back with static. I like your mcguiver technic on balance bike. Cool. Had a shovel back in 79 and set it up for racing. Did special cam stainless rods, alum pistons. Had it jacked. A fellow had a bike the same in Utah salt flats. Called it the tramp. He had a record on his and I wanted to take it. But everything went down the tubes in 79-80 and divorce came and sold house and in cars and it took me on a journey to with things I should not have done. But that's life.     I put a Morris m5 magneto on mine runs great never had a problem since I installed it 8 years ago . Love it kick right over to but for me it was very expensive almost 2 grand back than polished .

    To see if it running the right mixture to plug chops at tickover, 40mph and 70mph and then read the plugs. It takes the guesswork out of getting the mixture right.

      Red you should become a mc tech. You have the knowledge. Your really good at it, and it's something you love. Is there a tech school for cycle repair. You should take it up.     That might have been my issue with the ultima when I went to set my static timing. Must have been on the wrong cylinder. I'm gonna have to try that again. By the way... Decel pop is typically a sign of running a little lean or perhaps an air leak somewhere.

    Great video! To get rid of the popping, try a set of DK Customs Thunder Torque inserts. They work great on my Sportster.

    Light and subscribed. I have a 1980 Harley tour Glide with a shovelhead motor that I've been working on and it's just about ready to go it runs and drive but I think it needs a little bit of tuning in the carburetor probably the Jets because it pops a little bit when I start to get past 2500 rpm

    Popping on deceleration is due to the idle mixture being a little weak. Try enriching it 1/4 turn..

    Might check the exhaust gasket s where the flange bolts to the head . could be the problem with the back pop . that's kinda a textbook timing job .us old farts like me just use a pencil in the spark plug hole to find TDC . just wondering with the electronic ignition if the coil has the right Ohms .

    You can static time them with a dial guage to so many degrees BTDC or back of the big hole Us old farts used use a cigarette paper or light bulb on the points to measure them just opening but you have the light on that electronic ignition so your good also you should check your pushrods are turning and arent tight while your at it

      The copper tubing is made from the same stiff you can get a a hardware store, then hand cut and bent to shape! I have a couple older videos where I do a bit of a walk around of my bike and show some things a little closer. Thanks for watching!

      @@RedRiderCanadaBC was referring more to the routing and such. E.g. looks like oil lines going in/out of you timing cover, perhaps a catch can(?) midway on the right side for the sump, etc. Nice work by the builder.

    good job . my guess on the decel pop is two , exhaust leak and or the low speed jet is to big by one size ,because with the throttle plate closed the engine is drawing fuel from the bowl ,too rich . hope this helps think through it .

    If it has a excessive pop pop on deceleration it could have a air leak somewhere around the intake area.

    Oh lord, I recall my wife and I tried the strobe light method years ago. All set up and raring to go, I increased the revs until we reached whatever the figure was mentioned, the light was flickering away like a good'un, but the noise level was extreme to be sure. I was bellowing into her ears but she could not hear me at all. I got two subtle complaints due to the racket. I gave it all up. Not sure if I did not just throw the tool away, I certainly have not seen it for years now....!!!!!! We live and learn don't we.....

    Popping on decel is 90% of the time is a lean condition. Leaking intake to head or to carb or to small of jet or ive also sean it from a leak from head to exhaust hope that helps

    Yes, it was certainly an interesting video. These days, personally, I generally only get to work on stuff with electronic engine controls and there's no real option to input any "Mechanical Witchcraft" into the work. The computer only allows you to set it to the specified settings and you've no option to alter it. It was interesting to see a purely mechanical approach to the job of timing the engine. You'll probably hate me for suggesting this, but a gas analyzer is going to be the only real way to set your fuel/air mixture correctly. Even then, a carburettor is never going to be perfect in all cases. The popping on overrun is likely to be a lean mixture on a closed throttle. If it goes away with a gently closed throttle, that's a good indication of it being lean on idle setting. I have a 2021 two cylinder Italian motorcycle and that is set just as lean as it will stand without melting the pistons. That crackles and pops on a shut throttle overrun like you wouldn't believe! I think your exhaust pipes are too short to be retaining and then igniting unburnt fuel in there and that being the popping you can hear. Anyway, keep doing what you're doing!
