Along with acting like some kind of mind control device, making them commit evil deeds, maybe the masks are what allows them to exist in the light world by protecting their eyes/faces? Also raising the question as to whether they’re effectively blind and get around using their other senses, not unlike the Xenomorph from the Alien series. Just a random thought.

Well the masks are actually sheilds to protect their faces after Link obtains the sword and shield minda will play around and wear the sheild on her face this is probably how the poeple of twilight hold their sheilds, on their faces. It seems weird how could they see through the sheild.
Technically, Midna was the one holding onto the fused shadows. She even warns Link not to touch them.

Indeed. Midna also mentioned that. It was the reason he became a wolf instead of a spirit like everyone else. I'm not positive, but I also think she said, he was spared from becoming a spirit, or worse, a dark beast. It's been a while, so I could be mistaken.

To me Twilight princess as ALOT of similarity with Metroid prime 2 echoes both are the second game of their franchise realease on Game cube both feature a light and dark world both ask you to find things in the dark world the Ing desigh from echoes are very reminiscent of the twilight realm monster both feature 3 area to return to its light state both as a recuring vilain to the main characters you will fight multiple time trough the story Dark samus and king bulbin? Both feature a sky temple access by findind keys all over the overworld etc etc etc

If the shadow beast's true form is them wearing a mask, then why doesn't Midna wear a mask in her true form. Makes you wonder if she has another true form or hidden power.
Curious...
1. The Fused Shadow & the Twilight Beast helmet/mask/shields both share a dual serpent-like motif. Which would imply a connection, even though the dual serpents aren't in the same position/pattern between then.
2. The markings on the aggressive Twilight Beasts (Hyrule, Palace of Twilight interior) are red, while the passive Twilight Beasts (Palace of Twilight exterior) are off-blue...the same color as used for the markings on the "non-beastialized People of Twilight", the designs on Zant's robes, and on the markings on the Palace of Twilight (doors, etc.) itself.
3. The People of Twilight have vastly different body markings than their beastialized other-selves.
4. When Link brings a light orb into the presence of a Twilight Beast, they shrink and the darkness 'poofs' off their body. Oddly, the Twilight Beast markings only THEN fade away to reveal the person's natural body markings.
5. Conversely, when Link takes a light orb away from a Twilight person, the Twilight Beast's markings appear in the air before them (watch the transformation in quarter speed) & glow even _before_ their body begins to re-absorb darkness, and only fades onto their skin once they've fully transformed.
I can't help but wonder about the symbolism here...
a. What's the meaning behind the serpent patterns; does it represent evil as it does in Western/Christian mythos or something else? And why are they shown in at least three different patters: a single continuous pattern like on the front of the Fused Shadow; intertwined like on the metal masts of the Shadow Beasts accompanying Zant; separately wrapping around either side & bottom of the central "wheel & hub" design on the stone masks of other Shadow Beasts...?
b. Are the shield-masks the Beasts wear supposed to symbolize how their "eyes/faces are shielded from the light to retain their darkness"? A symbolism of slavery (like an iron mask) to the "darkness"? Or, given the concept art of the Shadow Beasts...is it a seal against their toothy maw?
c. Is the red colored markings supposed to indicate that they are under the control/thrall of Zant/Ganon, while those with their natural blue-ish coloring symbolizing their minds are still free? Or something else?
d. What is the power (or perhaps purpose) behind the symbol/pattern of the Dark Beasts - is it like "rune magic" in other cultural myths? If so, then is it the power of the darkness that the interlopers once wielded, or the power of Ganondorf's magic/Triforce of Power? Why does it appear before a Twilight citizen absorbs darkness prior to their transformation, and is the last to fade when returned to normal...?

Nice video. As twilight princess is my favorite video game, I have been into the theories and lore connections of this game. This is another fascinating topic. Do U think Ganondorfs evil magic given to Zant might be what turn them into these beasts... just a thought but I think Ganondorf might have something to do with it as well

I actually think that the "mask" is actually a hat and when they're transformed into a shadow beats they're constantly facing down

But also, Link _NEVER_ touches a fused shadow throughout Twilight Princess. Midna always yoinks them away from him out of concern, and the light spirit Lanayru seems to imply that even Link can be corrupted by the Fused Shadow, regardless of the Triforce's presence.

Lanayru's message couldn't be for anyone else _but_ Link. Link is the stand-in for not only the civilian who kills the person he deeply cares for, Ilia, out of a lust for power, but also stands in for the interlopers as well.
The Dark Link interlopers represent not only true in-universe events, but also represent the dark aspects of Link's psyche, as Dark Link always has represented previously, as well as after Twilight Princess. And what do they do in the cutscene? They quell the goodness in Link's heart and take over his entire being, merging one of the Dark Links and normal Link into the same entity, representing full corruption of Link's psyche.
Another detail worth remembering is that the interlopers created the Fused Shadow to establish dominion over the sacred realm, and the artifact is even shown to _block out_ the light of the Triforce, implying that the Fused Shadow has more power, at least in some form, than the Triforce.
The Fused Shadow's power is a direct foil to that of the Triforce. It only serves to be a force of _darkness_ and destruction, while the Triforce serves as a force of _light_ and creation. And since the Triforce has no destructive ability of its own and is shown to rely on other matter, such as the Sky Keep in Skyward Sword, to carry out destruction on its behalf, this means that the Triforce is a much more passive force than the Fused Shadow. This leaves the Triforce itself vulnerable to being snuffed out by the Fused Shadow.
Another quote to make note of, from Zant:
"My god had only one wish... To merge shadow and light... and make darkness!"
"Shadow", throughout the whole adventure, is used interchangeably with "twilight". This means that when twilight is brought into the world of light, it isn't simply twilight being present in the light realm, but is, in fact, darkness. The two are differentiated by the effect they have on Link. Darkness is shown to turn Link into a wolf, while in the Twilight Realm, he retains his human form. The wolf form comes about due to the Triforce's inability to fully protect Link from darkness. This once again demonstrates what was shown in Lanayru's visions: darkness having the power to stamp out the influence of the light.
So, with all this, I say that Link can definitely be corrupted by the power of darkness from the Fused Shadow, because not even the Triforce's light can stand up to true darkness. Midna protects Link from such a fate by keeping the Fused Shadow on her person and never allowing Link to grab the pieces as they are drawn close to him.

Still agree with the completionist that many people say their favorite Zelda game is their first Zelda game. For me that was and is Wind Waker which a friend lent me and many people say Twilight Princess as the Wii was Nintendo's most recent great selling console. The Switch is catching up but BotW is still too new to see how many people it retains. Personally I didn't like BotW. The story was weak and the world was fairly barren while also not having a good drive to complete the story. It wasn't quite as comical as Fallout 4's but still with the world not noticeably struggling there really was little drive to push forwards.

@@drwily yeah not something I noticed till the completionist mentioned it. It's why Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess are the main go to games for best in the series, they were all the start of basically a new generation of gamers. Even though personally I still think Majora's Mask is better than both Twilight Princess or Ocarina of Time, it's the nostalgia getting the best of us.
Though going back to Wind Waker, I can say it's not a perfect game. I think it's main fault is being a bit too easy at times but the puzzles were fairly creative. Why I kinda want to say Skyward Sword is the best Zelda game when it comes to game design, just with the caveat that the imprisoned isn't fun to fight 3 times and the story is a bit too heavy unlike say Majora's Mask where the story is presented in a more organic way that doesn't feel forced. Ocarina is good but kinda archaic today to play, Majora's Mask is incredible but age has made it look limiting, etc. BotW though only barely feels Zelda. It feels more like random game with a Zelda skin slapped on top of it as even some enemies don't act at all like they used to. Not a bad game but not a great Zelda game. Though personally I think half of BotW's new features feel half baked to the point they might as well not have been there.
It is heavily implied humans can be turned into shadow beasts in the game. I don't see any reason why Zant couldn't have used both twili and humans to make them. And the ones we see that we know are twili aren't full on all fours beasts, they just get bigger and have the masks on their heads. So maybe zant only used humans for the beast type which is why they can survive in both light and shadow.
I haven't seen the video yet but Midna outright tells you it's her subjects transformed by Zant's shadow magic. There's no theory behind it, that's it. Also the lady at the general store in Kakariko transformed into one. They probably have the power to turn others into dark beasts; like when one of them took hold of Link at the beginning.

The twili race is most likely not just made of pure darkness as the whole thing with twilight is that its a mix of darkness and light and the reason why they cant exist in the light realm is because it messes up the balance of light and dark within them and when the balance is messed up with an overwhelming amount of darkness they become shadow beast
I don't think it was the triforce protecting link from the fused shadow. Immediately after link turns into a wolf for the first time the triforce in his hand goes dormant and fades. That would be pretty significant since they when out of their way to show that scene. Plus after each boss fight Midna immediately snatches the fused shadow from link so he doesn't touches it. Also fun fact of the sol orbs. Sol in Spanish means sun thus the sun orbs

Getting a closer look at the armor in twilight princess, doesn't it kinda look like a snake on the dark beasts mask? I know that sounds random, but i was looking for a snake more than anything on the twiligh's attire. I think I saw a snake on Zant's armor too maybe? Further connecting this, there seems to be a gerudo symbol on Zants clothes at around his waist, and the only time where snakes have appeared in the series is on the Sand Goddess statue in Oot. Ganondorf's family is also known to be sorcerers right? Ganondorf and Twinrova seem to have that power, and if the gerudo were more isolated than any other nation from after Hyrule was founded at the end of Skyward Sword, wouldn't it be interesting if the Gerudo were the only sorcerers present in most games? Where I'm getting at is, the Twiligh could be changed Gerudo, becuase the Gerudo tribe wasnt present in TP. They could've adopted some of their previous symbols like the snake. Majora's mask could've been built by them as well. Dark interlopers would fit the Gerudo tribe better than any other known nation we know of right? Of course, this is all speculation, but I'd love for this to be partly true.
Additionally, the mirror WAS stationed in the desert. It'd take a long time to move that from anywhere else
