    A vent would look nice in your Cordiella skirt. If you wanted to keep knitting in the round, you could consider steeking it and adding the vent trim at the end.

      I was just going to make the same suggestion. If knitted with ribbing on the edges, It would make a very neat vent, similar to a sewn vent.

    I think a vent is a good idea at the back of the skirt. I’d consider doing a steek to avoid having to knit flat. I think a black ribbon covering the steek on the inside would look quite pretty and help with any stretching too.

    • @Stitchers_Whimsy
      @Stitchers_Whimsy 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree, steeking would probably be the easiest. And if you do the final edging in a contrast color it would be pretty! Also, maybe a side slit instead of the back vent?

      Hey Nora! I say yes to the vent in the skirt (does your All Good Dress have a vent?)
      And I think chocolate brown is more lovely on you 🤎

    The linen skirt has a vent because it doesn’t stretch but the one you are knitting will. I think that adding the vent might make it hang funny in the front(not as straight but more A line). I wouldn’t add the vent until the end, as suggested by others, and only if necessary to walk. It is beautiful 😍.

    Hi Nora! Thank you for another great episode, for the skirt i would do two side vents starting at the knee to the hem. Like others mentioned you could try steeking them so that you can continue knitting in the round!

    The information paper you included that comes in and out of the frame at relevant looks really nice! I’ve been wanting to thank you for continuing to focus on summer projects and not rushing into fall knits just yet. It’s been really helpful for me to see that I really do have enough time left to complete my summer projects. I’ve noticed that many people are already talking about fall projects, which, while useful, adds stress for me as I try to balance finishing my summer and transitional projects. It’s still quite hot where I live, so I’m not able to fully enjoy or embrace the fall experience just yet. Thank you for keeping things in season and alleviating some of that pressure!

    I think you're spot on with adding a vent. I think doing it kind of like a button band - doing a steek and picking up stitches to rib the edges of the vent and match the hem of the skirt - would be cute!

  • @Ferrousfibers
    @Ferrousfibers 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hey Nora, in regards to your idea of adding a slit in the back of your skirt I would recommend a technique I used recently in a striped cardigan I knit. When you are knitting flat you knit selvage stitches on either edge.
    Right side rows: k1, slip 1 with yarn in front, k1, then continue in stockinette to last 3 stitches K1, sl1 wyif, k1.
    Wrong side rows: sl1 wyif, k1, sl1 wyif, purl all stitches to last 3, sl1 wyif, k1, sl1 wyif.
    You have to twist the 2 colors of yarn your working with every row but it creates a beautiful slim finished edge that looks like a tiny rolled I-cord and your twists to carry the other color of yarn are hidden inside. Give it a try. It was a game changer for me.

    For sure, you look better in the chocolate brown. It's obviously your colour! However, like most of us, black is a great staple and you look good in it too.

    I love your little short stories. Some people don't like it when they attract eyes and comments when creating in the wild. Like you, I feel tickled by the inquisitive onlookers. Even though more and more people are playing with sticks and strings these days, it still amazes the general public when they see someone making. Theres no feeling like someone asking " did you make that?" If you did make it, you proudly say "yes, I did". I have even said "I didn't make it, but I could" Good times. As always your creations are beautiful and so well thought out. Im thinking small vent on either side to even out any stretching or puckering.

    Yes, I would say a vent is very necessary to be able to walk. Maybe knit the waist band and attach it, because that will also change the length of the skirt And yes, blocking after the band is attached is a good time decide if it is time to start a vent. Good luck It is looking so cute.

  • @aprilg3193
    @aprilg3193 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    I wouldn’t do the vent at the back for a few reasons. One with this kind of yarn the flaring you are imagining won’t happen because as you mentioned this yarn has less memory and will constantly have gravity pulling it down straight. Also this yarn seems to be drapey so if you do the slit in the back it won’t be horizontal at the bottom the tips of the slit will most likely end up dropping down which would be hard to combat with shaping because of the stripes.

    • @juliao9146
      @juliao9146 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I love the way the Clematis vest is coming along - can't wait to see the finished product! Regarding the person who couldnt believe you had made your sweater, ive always made a distinction between something that looks "homemade" versus something that is "handmade". Perhaps this person has only ever seen "homemade" things which might look a little clumsy or wonky, as opposed to your "handmade" items which are always well executed and perfectly fitted for your body and purpose. Keep up the good work!

    Personally I'd do side splits and knit a rib edge in the white afterwards. I wouldn't steek as its plant based. I like the white background on Helena the Hanger. Here in NZ we change seasons on the first of the month so today is Sunday 1st September so we think it's the first day of spring. We have had a week of spring like weather but it will probably turn cold again.

    Hi Nora, I think you can just keep knitting in the round and steek the slit. Add about 10-12 extra stitches (or more) in the center back then whip stitch the steek edges & use a pretty ribbon so if it flares you see the pretty ribbon show. You might want to add the 2 stitch bind-off around the edge of the slit to give it a more polished finish. Good luck.

    I think a vent with the ribbing could work well. Most vents in skirts have some overlap, which just splitting for a vent won't give you. If you cast on one part of the ribbing over some of the stitches in the skirts, that could give you the overlap you might need

    I agree with you about a vent for the skirt and the placement. For finishing you could do a placket type finish. I knitted a Henley style sweater that has that button placket. You could take that idea & flip it to be the vent finish. And if you wanted the vent to be “adjustable “ you could add a button or two. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Oh Nora, I could feel your frustration as you told the story of trying to do a sewn bind off in the car. The minute you started telling the story, I could only imagine how many different places that yarn could catch on! I get so impatient with those bind offs - especially the long ones, but I tell you, it seems that no matter how few stitches there are, the yarn will catch or twist onto something - and yes, there always seems to be a thousand yards left over when I'm done. I guess that's better than running out. I love your story about "little Nora". Can you even imagine her, decades from now, telling someone (maybe her children), "I knit because one day I met this very sweet, beautiful lady in a coffee shop and she had my same name and she was knitting and I wanted to be just like her". 😊

    Check the circumference of the dress at knee height you knit last year compared to this one. If you decide to do a single back vent, knit it would one side of a split hem on a sweater, so built in ribbing and a few rows of reinforcement at the top of the split. Make that part (the top of the split) black so it doesn’t show .

    Idea for vent finishing on your skirt. I’m making a tee that is sleeveless and it doesn’t have any finishing on the sleeves. So I have just done a 1 stitch garter stitch along the edge. It just tucks under very neatly and doesn’t curl like a raw edge on stockinette sometimes does. In other words, knit one row and purl the next row on just the edge stitch on each side. So if you’re knitting flat, you would just knit the first and last stitch of every row, including the purl rows. Then when you’re done, you’re done! Voila!! 😊

    I appreciate your sharing about blocking. Should have listened to you sooner. I'm now on my third attempt to knit the Pressed Flowers Cardigan. I blocked the hem only to find it grew almost 20%!!!! I've never had yarn grow so much!! If only I would have blocked my first attempt when I thought it was too small. The vent in the back is a great idea. Worried about it curling inward - maybe do about 6 stitches of 1x1 ribbing at the edges of the vent?? Love your font choice and the pattern info popping up in the bottom left corner.

    I like your idea of a vent/slit! A few ways to maybe finish... Get a bias tape in a good color, sew salvage vertical edges onto it, fold to inside, and affix with a pick stitch, an elegant clean finish. Or, knit a border across top and sides of vent, making it a design feature. If you make the top you could echo that up there too. Could be really cute!

    When I’m doing a long sewn bind off, I pull the yarn out in very short lengths. Maybe 10 inches at a time. Over and over for the length. Sounds worse than it is to do and it doesn’t get tangled on stuff around me. Just ends up in a little pile next to me.

    It’s my time with Nora! Coffee and knitting ready! For your vent in your skirt I have two ideas . . .maybe short rows with an I-Cord edge. Or what about to make the vent Raglan decreases like you would for a sweater? Having only made 2 sweaters I may be talking way out of my skill level but I think either of these would give you the split you want.

    The clematis looks so neat! Can’t wait to see it done.
    I would hold off on putting a vent in your skirt until after you block and try it on. If the yarn is drapey and might not hold its shape as well those corners could end up hanging funny. And not holding its shape will help keep it from staying flared out when you walk too. But I’d just experiment and see what you like, could try a smaller vent.

  • @nellispinelli9

    I definitely think you should try it on first and decide from there, but here are some skirt slit ideas haha.
    I knit a skirt that I knit straight from the hip and I had the same concerns so I added a slit down the side. I have no regrets about it, but I knit it in truboo so the fabric would have sheered out a lot as I walked if I hadn't. I actually did some increases at the edge when I split and did an icord edge as I knit the skirt.
    Another slit design I've seen and really like (that I also think would work really well for your skirt design) is to decide how wide a ribbed edging you want along the slit (let's say 6) so at the top of where you want your slit to start you kfb those 6 stitches, placing every new stitch on a marker on hold (middle STS would be the middle of that slit). Then when you get to the back again you knit the held stitches. From then on you can do the ribbing pattern on those sts. (You can do it from the beginning I just don't know if it's necessary) It creates a slit with the edges overlapping at the top. And then flows into the ribbed edge at the bottom of the skirt.

    For the skirt, I don't have the pattern but it does look in pictures like it flairs a little at the end and vents might not be necessary. However, if I was adding vents, I think I would go for something quite shallow at the end at the sides rather than centre back - something about vents in hooped patterns that doesn't work for me but would be less noticeable at the sides maybe as well as fitting better with any flair. But what do I know?!😄

    @sjem9616 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The Cordelia skirt is looking lovely! I, personally, would add a few increases for a slightly flared, not-quite-tulip shape over adding a vent. That’s my preferred silhouette, so it might not work for you or align with your vision for the garment, but I do think it would address the issues you’re anticipating better than a vent. (I’m not sure a vent is the best option but can’t really articulate why!)

    I was wondering if on your skirt if you could reinforce for a pleat steek and then pick up and knit a placket pleat? I know it's not a traditional wool but if it was reinforced with a sewing machine it would add stability? Just my guess.

    I think you are right that the dark brown is better than the black for your colour type. That is actually the case for most people. (I think only winter has black as one of their good colours). However, you still look very good in black so I wouldn't worry about it. Some people really get washed out in black but you are not one of them.
    For the Clematis Top, the designer is German and the German pronunciation is the other way you said it, with the emphasis on the "a". So both ways you said it is correct (english and german).

On black v. brown: I believe you are overall a more chocolate brown person than a black one. That said, that wonderful black vest with the diagonal button bands will look fabulous on you and complement many outfits. Just my opinion.

      if you find it's possible to reinforce and steek it, I would cast off a couple stitches at the beginning of the steek then cast them back on in the next round... then probably pick up and knit a tiny bit of double knitting on the folded steek edges later . I've heard of steeking cotton but I've only ever done wool.

    Idea: if you want to wear Clematis black vest with Cordelia striped skirt, maybe the shell buttons would tie the whiter stripes in skirt with the shell buttons in top. Then you could switch buttons after you make Cordelia top. I didn't notice the black washing you out, personally. I think having both hues in your wardrobe also expands your associated shoe choices (I'm older & maybe that's why I'd wear clack shoes w black items & brown shoes w browns- probably a little OCD too@😂)!

  •  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I don't think this black vest is muted or washed, at least in camera it looks pretty clear.

    I guess I have the less popular opinion, but I am worried a vent will cause flaring / gaping and will make the hem not straight horizontal. I would guess that the weight of the skirt and gravity will keep the skirt as designed from having the issues you're worried about, so I would just keep going without it. For what it's worth, I have always heard it pronounced cleh - MAT -is, but I am pretty sure it's also validly pronounced CLEM - at - is, so I'm guessing it's regional. 🌺🏵🌸Edit to add Yes, warm colors really shine on you and that is a cooler black!

    For your skirt, I might consider putting a three or four inch split on both sides. My fear of a long split in the back is that it would end up pulling apart a bit and when you're not walking you would have an odd gap in the back. I could see smaller splits on both sides, similar to a split hem on a sweater, and not as noticeable as a large one in the back.
    I have always said ClahMATis, but have always heard it both ways. I guess it depends on where you come from in the country. In the end, it doesn't matter.

  • @maiiamiii
    @maiiamiii 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'd say both versions of pronunciation of clematis are correct: one is the English version and the other one German (which is in this case very valid since the designer is from Germany). So if you prefer to emphasize the a, like you did at the beginning of the video, before the nice lady in your phone corrected you, you're not wrong!

    I support your idea for a back vent, especially because you're trying to copycat your storebought skirt. I would just slip the first stitch of every row for a clean edge. I'm hesitant to say do ribbing because stripes always look slightly different on ribbing than stockinette.
