    Over the last few years, Phoibos has been the source of many surprises. Some good, some bad, and some confusing. This is one of the latter. As I wasn't expecting a bronze Proteus. The original steel version came out 3 years ago. The Aged Steel a few months after that, then nothing until now.
    As with the previous versions, this one has a Seiko NH35A, double domed sapphire, good lume, and a unique style.

    A quick one for you today. Also, I think I accidentally said NH34 instead of NH35 for the movement. I guess I've seen too many nh34 GMTs lately.
    Also, evidently, these are limited editions.

    Nautical theme. Twisted crown represents rope on ships. Port hole date window. Bronze. All remains me of being on boat/ship.

    I have a Proteus black dial in aged steel already, and a Zelos Swordfish meteorite dial in Bronze, yet this def has a home in my collection. Ordered the Blue dial variant, super cooool. Great content as always, Shane👍

    I have a thing for bronze but not usually a dive watch. If they had used compass points on the bezel I might have been tempted. I think the blue and green options are the best looking

      LOL I actually did that in a video a loooooong time ago, and I remember a few people making fun of me. Like "O Shit! He took the glasses... things getting serious now!"
      Although usually I keep them off because they tend to reflect the lights right to the camera, but maybe I'll do it again and see.

    Would be cool to experiment with it. I like it “gold tone” and full bling BUT as you mentioned it will patina. Keep it and expose it to elements to see how it ages. I’ve seen some (bronze /brass cases) that actually look like they would be unhealthy to wear!

    I've never been a fan of the Proteus, mainly due to the awful/weird porthole date window. The handset is also a bit off. This bronzie actually doesn't look too bad, the salmon dial just seems to work. Enough to buy..not so sure. Having said all that, another trip to the Phoibos website is in order. Nice balanced review, Shane.

    I never thought the lightning bolt second hand quite fit the rest of the Proteus design. And I say that as the satisfied owner of a Proteus in blue. But on this version I think it looks right at home. Interesting.

    Hi Shane! Is the lug width 22mm on this watch? Your specs say 20mm, but the website seems to say 22m. If so, Aragon has a 22mm rose gold bracelet that is on sale right now for $65. The end links have a small profile, so there is a good chance that it would fit the watch. I bought the rose gold bracelet for one of Aragon's bronze watches, and while it doesn't patina like the bronze case, it still looks good with a bronze watch.

    • @RelativeTime

    I do love Phoibos, have two of them but not 100% sure of this one. However, when that case and bezel starts oxidizing and dulls down I think it will look a little better. As for the dial, this one just doesn't work for me. I'd go for the green dial one. You cannot beat green deep blue or dark red with bronze. However I'm not quite sold on this particular one. If you really like to have a bronze diver, I'd go for the Cronos Turtle homage with a PT5000 and a very nice blue or green dial for around $200 and with a remarkably similar strap to this Phoibos. In fact there are a number of very nice bronze alternatives with nicer looks. This is a miss for Phoibos in my humble opinion.

    I have seen the blue watch, the leather strap looks very cheap: it looks like the colored leather is an artificial film glued on actual leather. Can anyone verify if Phoibos is claiming genuine leather and selling artificial leather instead?

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's possible, but unlikely. Genuine leather covers a wide range of quality. So there's some pretty cheap general leather straps out there.
      For the price the strap I got seems okay, but it's nothing to write home about so to speak.

    • @Garvey-vm3qt
      @Garvey-vm3qt ปีที่แล้ว +1

      “Genuine leather” is just about the cheapest leather you can get. Don’t expect anything nice from it. Anyhow you can get a full grain Chromexcel strap for around $20 (it’s full grain)

  • @HVG67
    @HVG67 ปีที่แล้ว

    Phoibos - for my taste - has launched a bunch of watches in a row that I find complete misses. The new Great Wall has literally none of the redeeming elements of the original (I hope you're going to review it). The Vortex? Bad design with those stupid 'horns'. The whole strange Apollo lineup? What were they thinking? Having said that: I own the white Proteus myself and I still like it (If the aged version would have been released first, I would have gotten that one). The bronze one could fill a gap in the lineup but for me it's redundant. Having said that: besides the Proteus I also own the Sentinel, Narwhal, Nebula and a Voyager GMT. And talking value for money: with the exception of the Voyager (NH34) and Proteus (NH35) the Sentinel, Narwhal, Nebula all have the high beat Miyota 9015 on board, which is one of my favorite movements. So I guess I am a Phoibos fan in general... But this one is a pass (also because I have a bronze Zelos Swordfish with salmon dial and bronze bracelet)..

    • @davidhenry9764
      @davidhenry9764 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the Apollo in grey and quite like it. But the vortex is very ugly/odd and I don’t particularly care for the new Great Wall either.

      I love that they are trying to be different, but I think they really should start seeking feedback from their dedicated fans before going into production. They have their Facebook group, just show off some stuff now and then and see what people say.

    Man you hate Phiobos don't you. Every video I've seen including the Narwhal which I just bought gets dumped on. I like their pieces. Why buy them then?

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually consider myself a Phoibos fan, in fact, I've reviewed just about every new release from them in the last 4 years. I'm just trying to give an honest assessment of each watch as I see it, both the good and the bad. Which this watch has both of, but in the end, I do say that it's a good watch. Not great, not excellent, but still a good solid entry-level watch.
      Same with the Narwhal. I remember your comment about it so I went and rewatched what I said. My only issue with it was the name. I could elaborate if you want, but out of all the creatures in the sea, it's a goofy choice. Yet in the end I said it was a good if not great watch from Phoibos.
      Now to be fair, I do prefer some of their older designs. I appreciate that over the last few years, they have been trying very different things. However I think they really should utilize their dedicated fans (like on their facebook group) for feedback on the designs before going into production. Especially with the Vortex. It has potential, and with a few tweaks could have been great.
