@@GorgeousGeorge97 Well, my friend... Brasil, after the end of slavery, remained in the hands of the same colonialist elite, which to this day buys and finances the state, also closing shady deals with imperialist countries to contain and depress the population so that they continue with the monopoly of power for generations. . Drugs and weapons are not manufactured in the favelas. There is a very large scheme involving organized crime, the state and the upper bourgeoisie. The mainstream media focuses on favelas while praising the main culprits, which in this case are their own financiers.
No foreigner will ever understand the madness and violence that happens here, in Brazil. They think it's a movie, but we know that everything shown there is the purest truth. In fact, the truth is even worse.
I've heard stories of war in the midle east, russians, iranians, iraqis, isis, hamas etc. It's pure horror. But you're right; civilians in urban areas around the world cannot fathom what it is like in Rio's favelas... and Rio's police.

You just DON'T kill a BOPE 😂👀 it's like signing you own death sentence!

This movie represents the pure reality of the slums of Rio. I lived there for 24 years since i was born. Every week i lost a friend due to shootings or the crime. Every week i needed to hide in my house to protect myself by the shootings. The people who live in developed countries or rich regions think the things that happen on this film are totally innacurate, but it is the raw truth. Thanks God I graduated and now I have a family and we live in a rich neighborhood.
Gostou da merda, em? 24a
There is a issue with the english subtitles, they "hide" some things, for exemple, lots of curses were removed in the scenes. Plus, when they are about to kill the Baiano, he said to not shot in the face, to not ruin the funeral. This gives another context, when he said "pick the 12 gauge". They were so mad at him, they purposely got the most brutal weapon to destroy his head, and ruin the funeral, just because he asked otherwise.
ya I understand that, its sometimes hard to translate word for word and often lose meaning the the process. thank you for watching :)
I don't generally said I could better, but oh boy I could lol. Like, why say "our uniforms aren't blue" when most cops in Brazil don't wear blue? Just translate it to "our uniform is different. It's black."
@@DanielSilvaProf most PMERJ cops wear blue, BOPE is part of the PMERJ, unlike the detectives PCERJ in gray and CORE elites in black
@@iwasneverkilled3516 You're confusing "uniforme de passeio"(galla uniform, used exclusively for important events and for those stationed in the police academy) with the farda (the uniform actually used by cops in the beat).
You see it in the movie: Matias and Neto wear blue when they are cadets (aka, studying to be police captains), and grey when they are on the beat. Fabio also wears blue when doing administrative work, but wears grey when he goes to the streets.
Yes, most galla uniforms are blue. But most street uniforms are either grey or brown. Unless you enter a police HQ, most cops you'll see will be wearing these colors.
Also keep in mind, these are the two most common, there are many uniforms for different roles (riot, internal affairs, swat teams, and so on).
@@DanielSilvaProf I live in rio and most cops i saw were using blue and not gala.

The most interesting thing about seeing gringos watching Elite Squad is seeing the kind of reaction they have to the heavier scenes in the movie. While audiences in Brazil were thrilled by the scenes of torture, gunfire and aggression committed by BOPE, gringos who saw all this found it extremely heavy, but still enjoyed the story. An interesting fact in the creation of this film is that there was almost no script and the scenes were prepared with a brief description of what should happen, giving the actors freedom for their performances. The scene where Fábio or 0-2 is forced to eat food from the floor and ends up vomiting, didn't exist at first, the idea was just to do a scene where the troops were forced to eat food from the floor, but the actor Wagner Moura who played Captain Nascimento was so devoted to the role that he forced the actor Milhem Cortaz, who played Fábio or 0-2, to eat the food. It is possible to see actor Milhem Cortaz looking to the side as if questioning whether this was really happening. He was looking at the director, who was signaling to continue the scene.

fun fact about the food on the ground scene: the actor actually vomited while making this scene and they improvised everything else. This was said by Rodrigo Pimentel a former cop who wrote the book that inspired the movie and also participated on the production
fun fact from a Brazilian American: Rio is exactly like that violent af, but Chicago is actually even more violent by almost twice the rate...
you think this film is the peak? were i lived this is just a normal day, except day is when you see clash from 2 factions, in front of my door for hole 2 week the corpse of a rival, and if someone take from there , he gonna put to be exemple, i never see a police before my 14 old , to me was normal smell of bones and tires, and the most common talks was like: Do you heard, "someone" was beheadead because lost some drugs, and his head is in the "paredao"(do not have a proper word in english, but is a place where there is laws in the comunity and some other things)
Man I really don’t doubt you.. we tend to look only at our garden..
I don't know... Chicago indeed it's dangerous, I have a friend from USA that was living in Slovenia from Michigan... Chicago, on extreme areas we're talking about 35 deaths per 100k population, Campos de Goytacazes was at least back in the day around 45 to 50 deaths per 100k pop. London it's pretty dangerous too.
Some cities in USA are on pair with Brazil, the problem is, that SO MANY places are dangerous in Brazil and we know: Brazil it's freaking big, a big red zone.
Pq a legenda n explica bem as piadas.

Elite Squad is one of the rare movies that the sequence is even better than the original. The second one is waaay less violent (although we still have some strong scenes) and is more focused on the political aspect of the system, and how police corruption is related to drug dealers and politicians.
They got it so close to reality that José Padilha, the guy who produced it and directed, had to leave Brazil for awhile, cause his life was in danger. I highly recommend to watch it.

It is interesting to mention that the scene that the captain talks about: puts it in the pope's account, the soldier crouches down to shoot the child so, when they check the ballistics, it will be possible to understand that it was not an execution, as the projectile goes straight through and not perpendicular
You really dont kill a cop in Brazil and expect to walk away
In reality, a lot of criminals murder police officers here and get away practically with impunity, because the laws in this country are shit, even more so now with a criminal president.

Dear Ms. Caroline,
Your review of "The Elite Squad" was not just a review but a powerful and honest reflection on the harsh realities faced by many in Brazil (Much worse in Rio de Janeiro, for sure). Your genuine reaction to the film showcased your deep understanding and empathy for the struggles portrayed. It's disheartening to realize that the depicted reality remains unchanged till now (2024), but your optimism and belief in the majority of Brazilians who still uphold values of family, freedom, truth, and honesty are truly inspiring.
Your honest reaction resonated with those who share your hope for positive change and a better future for Brazil. Congratulations on being a voice that acknowledges not only the great movie but the challenges yet believes in the strength of the people to fight the good fight. Keep shining a light on the truth, and may your sincerity continue to inspire others to join the cause for a brighter and more just Brazil, That this movie shines the truth and inspires those that wants a change.
Warm regards,
Professor R. Lemgruber
PS: I am born and raise in Rio de Janeiro but I hail from New Zealand, I share your sentiment as someone who made the move back to Brazil in 2014, facing the uncertainties of daily life in Rio de Janeiro (for 6 years) and couple of yars ago, I moved to Florianópolis (Kind of NZ that speaks Portuguese lol). It's a sad reality that leaving home for work comes with the unsettling thought that returning safely at the end of the day is not guaranteed. Many of these areas are subject to these organized crime group "laws" (and, important to say, manytimes these "laws" are supported by residents in face of the longlast absence of the state).

It must be clear that this is not the whole of Brazil. This is the ghetto, the outskirts of large metropolises. In Brazil there are two worlds, or rather, several worlds. There are several cities that are very quiet and have a good quality of life. Foreigners who want to visit Brazil need not be afraid. Most cities and neighborhoods are relatively quiet.
Specially Santa Catarina state, it's heaven here
I had forgotten how nervous and apprehensive this film makes you. I'm only seeing snippets now, but I can still feel the adrenaline.
16:39 Curiosity in this scene, the actor was really feeling bad during the scene because he didn't want to eat the "engodo" that a mixture of rice and beans and chicken and cashew juice and guava or " goiabada" So Pimentel, who is the former police officer who served as an exhale for Captain Nascimento, decided to record this scene as an improvisation because it wasn't in the script, so in other words, he was actually vomiting and the others were eating 😂
Caroline Browne, greetings. I've just saw your YT channel. If I may, an addendum: that "punishment" carried out by the traffickers, when they placed the man and the girl inside a pile of tires, covering them with gasoline, and later setting them on fire, is known as "microwave" (I suppose it is unnecessary to explain the why criminals use that morbid name).
I hope you have enjoyed the movie itself. Unfortunately, here in Brazil, these scenes still are a mirror of our reality everyday (mainly in big cities, but not only there). We as citizens wake up early, go to the job, university etc. and the fear became part of our daily routine. Obviously, that is not to say our regular life is terrible, or that Brazil isn't a good country to live in. It's the opposite. Brazilian people (massive majority) are good people, a warm and receptive country. We face/ fight honestly, work hard to raise money, studyng and seek the better for our beloved ones. This is a tipical Brazilian citizen! I just emphasize this point in order to give you a glimpse of what you just saw. There are many peaceful places and good people everywhere here (including at the slums). These poor places + income inequalities + lack of a serious approach on children formal education + corruption at all levels of State, lack of public policies aiming long term solutions and so on, maybe explain a slice of all this complex reality you've just watched.
thank you so much for watching & commenting I really appreciate it :)
My pleasure. All the best for you and your projects.@@CarolineBrowne
Irmão, issi é no rio, não no Brasil todo
I'm was a military in the south of Brazil and the training we go is more or less the same, we learned to keep a cold face and not to jump at everything that happens. And I was from the army, they are police, they have missions inside cities against "civilians", they enter communities and go through war zones, this film is watered down because the movie need a plot. And if you think the "torture" of BOPE was brutal it's because you don't know the things the criminals did at the time with normal people, police and other criminals. They are not only bad, they were terrorists.
This movie realistically depicts not only how the police, special forces and the organized crime in Rio de Janeiro was back then, but after almost 20 years it still represents well what's currently going on. The difference now is that apparently the criminals are being trained with professional standards of military tactics and have upped their game in their weaponry arsenal. For example, nowadays is very risky to conduct operations with helicopters in some of the areas dominated by the criminals, as there's a greater chance of it being shot down by high caliber anti-aircraft guns or even rocket launchers. All this mess and much more are probably due to or aggravated by institutionalized corruption in Police Departments, Bureau Secretaries and Politics in general.
Now that you watched Elite Squad part 1, I would suggest you to check out the part 2 as well, as it covers some of the aspects of the currupted relationship among state officers, politicians, police militias and organized crime and show us that the problem is way, way bigger than it may look at a first glance.
The first film, "Elite Squad", was widely interpreted by the audience in a complete different way from the original intention of the director, José Padilha. Instead of seeing Captain Nascimento and BOPE as critical representations of police violence and the repressive approach to public security issues, many viewers saw them as heroes, an interpretation that inadvertently aligned with far-right wing discourses in Brazil.
This public reaction had a significant impact on Padilha's decision to make "Elite Squad 2". The second film was an attempt to reframe the narrative and deepen the social critique. In "Elite Squad 2", Padilha more explicitly focuses on the failures and corruptions of the public security and political system, moving beyond the heroic and simplistic view that many viewers took from the first film. He tried to deconstruct the image of Captain Nascimento as an infallible hero and explore the moral and ethical complexities associated with his role and the broader power structures within Brazil.
This effort to readjust the narrative and clarify the critique of the security system and Brazilian politics reveals the power of cinema as a means to influence and reflect on social and political issues, as well as the challenges faced by filmmakers in communicating their messages to the public.
Rio de Janeiro is a totally different state in Brazil, never go to rio, you’re not safe there , This movie is pretty accurate to reality

It's crazy the fact that to many people in Rio, this is a commum reality. Sometimes even the violence is treat it as a "day to day" thing. Whem someone external from the context get in touch with this, we realize how terrifying really is.
I'm Brazilian and I really liked your reactions to Tropa de Elite, haha! The reactions of a Brazilian in general watching and a native of another country are quite contrasting, for us this is generally calm to see, for outsiders it is more frightening. Anyway, react soon to Tropa de Elite 2 please, it's going to be wonderful. And prepare well before watching. 🤣 (Sorry for the grammatical errors).
now watch "O Auto da Compadecida", one of our best comedies ever

This movie was the biggest cinema phenomenon I have ever seen here in Brazil when it launched. Brazil had some success in cinema, specially with Fernanda Montenegro's Best Actress nomination for Central do Brasil, and then what I believe is the best brazilian movie ever, Cidade de Deus, which was snubbed at the Oscars, IMO, because it deserved to sweep the competition (and it probably would if it was an US production, instead). But none came close to Elite Squad. Tropa de Elite, unfortunately, has too many regionalisms that are too difficult to translate or even put in subtitles, which kind of makes a lot of what it made this so huge lost in translation. For example, you showed a lot of very big moments of the movie that became common "quotes" used as joke here in Brazil, and a lot of the scenes that feels so tense are actually kind of comedy relief (like Matias having to hold an unpinned grenade to avoid sleeping during training while Captain Nascimento recites the concepts of "Strategy" and the translations of the word - which is commonly used in Brazil as a quote too).
The idea of the movie was to show the brutality of the Warfare between police vs drug dealers in the slums, how some (most) policeman are corrupt, how insanely powerful are the druglords (also shown in Cidade de Deus) in their area, and specially how innocent people are mostly caught in between. Weed is illegal in Brazil, which is why is portrayed as such a problem for Matias while he is interacting with his fellow classmates. The movie is kind of an enhanced image of reality (mostly). BOPE squad is depicted as mostly dudes that were forced to become psychos to combat crime within the police and the favelas, but of course the reality has many more shades of gray than that. It received criticism for how it depicted the police in general, which is fair, since there are a lot of good policemen, including in Rio de Janeiro, but unfortunately, it is one of the places with most shown cases of corruption, and the reality is not that far off.
The movie has also received criticism for the violence, but this is something that makes it feel more real, to me. Unfortunately, that scene of the drug dealers shooting a woman in the head and burning a man alive while he was trapped in tires actually exists (called "microondas/microwave"). It wouldn't be as good, IMO, if the scenes weren't so raw like they were shot, and Padilha needs credit for his direction. Wagner Moura and the other actors needed more praise for the acting, and this is another case of a movie that would have a lot of Oscars nominations if it was american, instead). Wagner Moura is actually internationally famous now, mostly, ironically, for playing a druglord (Pablo Escobar), for which he received a Golden Globe nomination.
The sequel managed to be as good as the first movie, even though it wasn't as eye popping as the first one. It goes deeper into the corruption, including politicians, and the acting is as amazing as in this one.
PS: looking by the view count, you may have just discovered an TH-cam view cheat code, which is mentioning Brazil or any brazilian production lol. We love to see our culture being seen but foreigners
"Se o filme é violento, a realidade é bem pior" Tropa de elite é um filme fantástico! Cidade de Deus, é outro filme fabuloso.
The black suit and simbol of BOPE is Inspired in Black suit of Amphibious commandos of brazilian marine corps where the firsts classes of BOPE was trained in recognition, infiltrarion and urban warfare. COMANF's are specialized in assimetric warfare operations since 1972.

I saw this movie with my uncles when I was a kid, or it was the second movie, the sequence. I never forgot the scenes of them putting people's heads in the bag, for a long time I didn't remember anything else from the movie other than the Elite Squad song and a bag scene
Ai que fofo ouvir ela tentando pronunciar “Tropa De Elite”.
It's actually great to see you reacting to one of the most successful movies in Brazil over the last years. And I didn't know you, and how nice you are, so I'm subscribing right now.
The thing about this movie is, when I saw it, almost 20 years ago, it meant to me what I see on the streets of Rio. Yes, I'm carioca da gema (I'm from Rio and so are my both parents), and we have seen the violence just escalate, while we are kept helpless in the midst of it all. But today, for me this movie is not just a adaptation of what happens here. It's more like a (perhaps too much) realistic portrait of what we see. I hope you plan to react to Elite Squad 2, because it is even closer to what we see here.
And let me say this: Rio de Janeiro is a very beautiful place, with all those beaches, monuments like Christ The Redeemer, and hard-working and fun-loving people. The problem here is cultural, and it affects the police, corruption and so many victims of injustice. Just having the movie touch on this entire universe that we contemplate today in Rio is incredible.
And here I am talking about Rio. Do you see what this movie does with us? 😂
Congratulations on the great vid!

I'm from Brazil, but a don't live in Rio Janeiro, anyway i know and confirm, the city call usually of 'Wonderfull city', It is one of most danger city of the world!
Hello Everyone, brazil isn't only Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo there's no need to panic, yes Tropa de Elite is a great movie and describes a lot RJ .
I think it's very difficult to translate the nuance and slangs from the movie script, but I believe that more than a limitation from the translater is the own construction of languages, english being a more transactional language, at its origins, is more direct and less prone to digressing, latin languages, on the other hand, try to be a lot more elaborate in phrasing even prolllific sometimes, but it kinda fits, not sounding too much blabbering, promoting an enrichment of the text. For example, in 10:09, the translated transcript shows:"So what did the dirty cops do? They told him to work the system", the full sentence from portuguese translated to english would be like so:"Neto tried to deal with the issues within the lawful regiment, but the crooked(cops) did what? Said to him he should work the system, even though, the system... isn't lawful". So essentially it's the same sentence however a little more extended with a little bit more information and exposure to Cap Nascimento personality, it's cynical humoristic traits.
No Sul é praticamente outro país dado a diferença cultural etc.
When a Brazilian says to a Tourist, don't go to Rio, that's the reason why we say that, Rio is not for amateur 😂😂
The actor of Capitão Nascimento is the same actor that voiced Death in Puss in Boots in english
Here in Brazil, when Maria asked about her friends to André, it was the first time a Brazilian would be able to say to another one "well, just do the L now" (people triggered replying to this in 3,2,1.. \/ )

One of the best films in my country, I'm a big fan. I was a soldier in the Brazilian army, thanks to the inspiration that this film brought me. congratulations on the video
There are tons of Brazilian films better than this. Go Watch and study "Cinema Novo" that is until this day considered the best era of Brazilian Films. Martin Scorsese has praised Brazilian filmmaker Glauber Rocha.
I'm Brazilian and I guarantee that this film was the one that best exposed the reality of Brazil, especially Rio de Janeiro. Brazil is not just joy, beaches and carnival, that's just 1%.
I am from Rio and live in a relatively close place to Cidade de Deus and it's exactly like that (sometimes even worse), but the funny thing is that these actors expected the film to make the police look bad but in reality, everybody was in favor of the cops. Just people who live in places with trafficators, militia, and criminals, in general, can actually say and state the LIVING HELL it is. After this movie, everybody in Rio was hoping that BOPE wouldn't be barred from their operations anymore (since it got so much public prestige) and could put an end to the traffic regions, but for politics, it all continued the same (and nowadays it is even worse because cops aren't allowed by their superiors to enter in those places anymore / mostly because in the most recent operation, the Jacarezinho operation, resulted in 28 deaths and the media portraited all the deaths as it was all innocent people, but then they shared the name of those who died and once you opened their Facebook page it had a bunch of drug and guns photos LOL and the media continued with all the theater).
PS: sorry for my English, I'm writing this on 2 Am with and allergy crises 😅
The idea of this film was to put Captain Nascimento as a villain, because he was tough against criminals, and everyone hated hin and Mathias was the protagonist, but that was a shot in the foot, because everyone identified with him, and he ended up being loved and became indirectly the protagonist, but of course, because it's a film, a lot of things are fictional, the torture, the sack... the police don't do that, it's just a film's poetic license
N praticam tortura?!
the scene when they put fire in that guy holding by tires is insane.
In Brazil they do that because of dificult to find who was burned.
Dificuldade não,desova mesmo
Se chama "micro-ondas"
this movie shows exacly what is the reality in Rio slums here in Brazil, almost a documentary
