As a film and narrative... it's got flaws. As a snapshot of a very painful reality of life in Rio De Janeiro? Uncomfortably accurate. Far too accurate.

"how you do" is pronounced like: "como vai", so, the "vai" is "vi". The "AI" in PT-BR is more like you pronunce I. Oi, como "V I" I hope this gonna help you :) portuguese br is a hard language.

That's awesome, but just so you know, the movie is more based on Rio de Janeiro reality.

A complexidade desse filme pra explicar pra um gringo é monstruosamente grande. Só quem convive com essa realidade, nasceu e foi criado nesse meio entende de verdade as nuances de tudo que tá envolvido. E dele pra cá já mudou muito, ou melhor piorou muito.

Caroline, your reaction to the tracker bug in the belly button was top level grossout. Excellent. What's so different about seeing this movie for the first time now is that in 1999 we only had a few Christopher Reeve Superman movies, and a few not great Batman movies, honestly DC was about as good as it's always been. This predated the X-Men by a year, and the actual MCU by 8 years, and there was no Spiderman yet. So seeing a superhero origin story 200 years in the future of post-apocalypse, was something next level. Also we hadn't been heavily exposed to the fantastical Japanese style where they did levitation, tree running, etc. So seeing this from American filmmakers and actors, with a very cohesive lore backstory, as well as a staggeringly good series of character arcs, it took the world by storm.

Netflix had this movie for a while in the early 2010s; in my own personal opinion I think Elite Squad is a better movie than Training Day. Elite Squad is a great flick, and this was my introduction to Wagner Moura who was also in Narcos, he's a hell of an actor.

In combat, Miller or Sizemore's character would have had every right to shoot him, just like the one who threatened to desert at the radar nest. Speaking of the radar nest scene, the military is not a Democracy. Having an argument over who's going where doesn't happen IRL. The medic would have NEVER taken part in the assault on the nest in actual combat. He was their only medic and it was well known that the Germans and Japanese targeted medics on purpose.
