I get that there other alternatives and they all might be great, but for me, part of the appeal of armada was that it was Star Wars and there is something incredibly satisfying about running an imperial star destroyer

Personally I'm getting a 3d printer and buying conversion kits. Me and my kid love x wing we bought it thinking it was a board game and have several ships. When I told her they where stopping production she was devastated so I looked into alternatives. Here's what I say if Disney won't make my star wars mini ship game I'll do it myself just for her even if I have to paint and trouble shoot the ships myself. He'll if I can I may sell the ideas we come up with cause there are some cool ships and factions we never got.

Under your advice my group had found our "Sweet" spot, and the week before the cancelation of Armada, we bulk ordered through our LGS, just stuff we wanted. Hammerheads, Thrawn's ship, card upgrade packs, dial packs, tourney kit, one of us got a SSD on the order, another original Core Starter set. Things like that to flush out some players collections and to have a few extra dice, maneuver tool etc. Suddenly its all out of stock, everything on Amazon is gone, it all quadrupled in price before being removed and in many cases, not even searchable. I'll let you know if that order we placed actually arrives. The LGS we use has basically never failed to deliver anything we've ordered in the past. So I'm hopeful.

Dropfleet Commander is a ton of fun. There's actually a reason for fighting (dropping troops), and it feels like a much more complete fleet game, where you will field a lot of cruisers, frigates, destroyers, etc. Instead of a fleet of like 3 ships. Love the shooting mechanic of having signature radiuses and spiking, which has a lot of tactical play especially with dedicated spotters.

Star Fleet Battles is a great starship skirmish game, a proven wargame w/no stinking cards. Emphasis on the geometry of firing arcs, simultaneous movement and slow graceful lumbering movement of large ships. It’s been around since 1977 and isn’t going away anytime soon. Fed Commander is a good streamlined derivative based on the same principles. Sorry, no preprinted mini’s but there is a line of mini’s that can be acquired and painted. Often times, the game engine is so good we forego the window dressing of mini’s to get to the real fun, deep, tactical gameplay.

can't recommend Dropfleet Commander enough, it's such a fun game. I really love the range and targeting system with ships being able to try and slow roll to avoid fire or go in guns/engines blazing. And the ship aesthetics are very cool.

Our group still plays AD&D and Warhammer 2nd edition. We pulled out West End Games Star Wars about two years ago and did a couple of modules. I am not really worried about games going out if production other than the prices can go up once they get harder to find.

Definitely have to add that Dropfleet Commander is awesome. Really unique, interesting mechanic (pings and detection) but it can be quite a bit fidgety. I've super-glued large washers to the bottoms of my starships to help them not slide around the table.

Star Trek into the unknown sounds interesting. To me x-wing and Armada suffered because all they were about was combat. They lacked interesting g and various mission scenarios and the total focus on one type of theme led directly to the highly competitive meta that killed the games.

  • @KaptajnCongoboy
    @KaptajnCongoboy 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

The local club just got into Dropfleet Commander at an opportune time, it turns out, as the new edition is on the way.
The models are really nice and quite easy to put together (compared to, say, GW nightmare kits with 20+ pieces for a single man size model) unless you want to magnetize, in which case the difficulty spikes hard. And as Crabbok says, easy to paint.
It lacks Armada's fantastic shoot first, then move, system (which really underlines slow, lumbering capital ships) but has a lot of very fun rules, including the basic targeting system, where weapon range is based on how much "noise" the opposing ships made its last activation. If a battleship really went to town, firing all its weapons and launching all its fighter craft, gunning its engines to the max or manouvering hard, it lights up like an energy christmas tree and you can shoot it from a long way away. And it is an actual fleet game. Even my relatively small 999 point battlefleet consists of almost twenty ships of varying sizes (fighter screen not included), including utility ships that scan for enemy ships to paint them, point defense frigates and athmosphere hunters - because most of the game's scenarios are based around landing troops on space stations or planets from dedicated dropship carriers to win.
We're also big into Warmachine, and several people play GW games, but if you're trying to get away from the hazards of corporate game giants the last is probably not for you :D

@@felipea7147 The current rulebook (downloadable from the TTCombat webpage) is 1.7, still 1st edition . There have been some minor changes from 1.0 but the new edition will likely at least streamline ground combat and hopefully fix a few other things too. We know there will be a new faction and that existing factions will be re-balanced to be more distinctive in playstyle.

Mike Hutchinson of Planet Smasher Games (Gas Lands, A Billion Suns) recently commented that he is working on an expansion to A Billion Suns to make use of Armada's miniatures. ABS is pretty neat as it supports battles that are taking place in different systems simultaneously with drop points. He's also looking at a Gaslands in space version that is described as "What if Gaslands, X-Wing, and Frostgrave had a baby?" that would work very well with x-wing miniatures.

Not sure how you could say it but you, Crabbok, are not responsible for how players feel about the game and whether it “survives”. These are totally valid and helpful for those who want a game that is still actively developed.

  • @mrgandw

As interesting as some of these games look, the star wars part of x-wing was a big seller for me and as I only play x-wing with my friends a couple times a year now I would probably not play any new games very often. The idea of getting into a new game also seems exhausting to me. As I get older it's probably good that my last hurrah in miniature game spending is happening right now and I will be saving money for mortgage and other things afterwards. Besides, I still haven't flown the majority of pilots in x-wing so that will last me ages.

Depending on how their licensing works, they may not be allowed to sell the remaining stock. Their license from Disney for the game may give them leave to sell that game for as long as they keep paying, and the renewal for those games may have just come up, it was not cost effective from their view to renew, so they lost it, and can't sell those items any more. What does make this a dick move is not telling us, they could have had a "lets get rid of the remaining stock sale", and let some people pick up what they needed in their lat run.

Play Star Fleet Battles. It's worth the investment of time to learn the rules. Dead cheap compared to X-wing or Armada. Been pretty much the same since the late '70s. Classic Star Trek ships (plus some "Star Fleet Universe" originals) dueling with phasers, disruptors, photon torpedoes, etc. Good fun and very tactically deep.

Ending support, and stopping production are two seperate things. That is the most frustrating thing about all this. In the end, i played both X-Wing and Armada because it is Star Wars. i think there is something wrong when a game announce there will be no new content does not mean the game ended... it means it is COMPLETE, it is in it's final and best form and maybe it is time to complete the collection with more and try bigger games, thematic stuff ecc.

To my knowledge AMG isn't producing anymore ships for armada either, not just new content

But it isn't complete. There are holes in the ships available, especially for the Clone Wars (and double that for Armada).

The remaining planes have been repackaged for Legion Imperialis, but Aeronautica Imperialis is still kind of a thing. Gameplay is great and could appeal to X-wing players. 3d printers are a thing for the factions that were removed.

Dropship looked promising, but sprues? Those are an archaic relic that need to disappear. The "it has to be done this way for detailing" excuse hasn't held water for years. Even less so when you look at the insanely detailed minis being put out by crowd funded games and especially not in the wake of games like Xwing and Armada.

Miniature gamers really obsess over sprues. I'm not the biggest fan myself, because there typically are way too many parts (I actually liked resin or resin+metal combos better because it didn't take a week to assemble a model, but 3d printing has been giving a good showing lately too) but most people have been housebroken to it by GW.

Am I the only one who has zero interest in shatterpoint? I haven't bought a shred of AMG content.

You are not. AMG is dead to me

Nope. I have zero interest in anything that dumpster fire of a company puts out.

I was hoping that AMG would make a Star Wars game 100% compatible with Marvel Crisis Protocol. That we could have that Darth Vader vs Dr. Doom fight we've all been waiting for. (Or Luke vs Captain America/Has Solo vs Punisher/ etc).
My understanding is that the two games aren't even in the same scale.

@@Hedgehobbit shows how little amg knows about anything. They no idea how to run a business, roll with a well-made minis game, or make anything worthwhile.
