Back in 2002, I played the original version of Mafia nearly every day for a year or so and it was much better than this remake. I'm not sure why the developers of the remake stripped out the open world and dumbed down the weapons. There's no freedom like you had in the original. It was like a better version of GTA3 back in 2002. Oh and the remake doesn't use the Mafia theme enough, its an amazing piece of music that really sets the tone of the story.
I am buying this game soley based on the time period. Everything else is a bonus & oh what a bonuses we have here. I loved LA Noire & is my only platinum trophy. I've played The Godfather (2008), so many times. Loved the style, and honestly smaller open world. This reminds me so much of that. This looks pretty damn great. I'll take Godfather-esque style over GTA every time

I have to say, this game didn't come into my radar after their first gameplay reveal during the summer. I absolutely LOVE the 30s prohibition setting in movies, TV shows (Boardwalk Empire: one of the best shows EVER) and video games. Then I watched your walkthrough earlier this month (I think?) where you toured the city just to give viewers a feel of the game and got excited. Now? Now I want this game. I dig that it's NOT an open world and more linear in fashion. I never played the original Mafia, so this will be an awesome experience! Thanks as always Karak!
* No public transport, can't ride train or tram, can't even enter platforms. * Animations are ridiculously fast, to the point of looking comical. Mafia 1 was the opposite. * No gun shops, no restaurants to eat for health, nothing to do or interact with in the world. * Looks, feels and runs like Mafia 3. * No interactive gas stations with clerk. * Can't sit in car and turn off engine. Can't exit car with engine running. Can't turn on lights. * No turn signals on any vehicles. * Tommy shares many of the exact same animations of Lincoln from Mafia 3. * Driving missions are hand-held and heavily rely on prescripted cutscene action events. * No buildings are enterable outside of missions. * NPCs don't respond to you on street, and if they do its with one word. * Many cars missing from the original. * Tommy has been rewritten to be a cocky d-bag, complete opposite manners to Mafia 1. * Same LOD issues on distant objects like buildings and vehicles like Mafia 3. * Terrible AI. * Graphics look similar to Mafia 2 with brightness turned up. "Amazing graphics" is hyperbole. * Pop-in galore, to the point of cars and trains popping in in front of you. * Textures are generally low resolution even on maxed settings. * Atrociously poor lighting, the game will fade between odd shades of white, green and blue. * Simulation driving mode is akin to a regular arcade driving mode. * No realistic suicide doors on cars like Mafia 1. * No car tuning options like Mafia 2. * Poor damage model on cars, smash into wall at full speed does nothing. * Can't open bonnet to repair car like in Mafia 2. * Majority of music from the original is missing including all Mills Brothers and Belleville. * Terrible gun play. * No world interactivity like turning on lights, faucets, flushing toilets etc. * Lack of bullet detail like entry holes on car tires. * Bugs, glitches and generally poor quality control of the map. * No spoilers, but the game ends with a rap song. I'll let that one speak for itself. * Can't disable basic features like HUD, health bar or mini map. * No money system, can't buy anything. * "Tommy is not a trained soldier" well that was a lie.
Even though i've played the original I appreciate the censored mission objectives and subtitles for possible spoilers, most people wouldn't be kind enough to bother.
I wish the graphics were the same as the 1st trailer I admit I was blown away. i wish the open world and combat had more substance like rdr2.story is the main drive and appeal of the game and I agree it has a lot of value especially for those going in blind. i think the deep sale option is a good decision but I really wasn't hoping it was I was excited but the fog has sort of lifted so to speak.
At 8:03 sometimes this is actually a mechanic for the AI, they give suppressive fire at the last spot they saw you in, so if you move for a flank without them spotting you, you can still see they will be aiming and firing at the location you were in
Waited so long for this review and I am glad it does not disappoint ^^ Don't know what some of the reviewers expected about the world, gameplay and mission design...
Always love your reviews. One suggestion/question: when it comes to your rating system, the "rent" option seems obsolete. I know you can technically still rent games at certain places (Red Box, Gamefly if it still exists), but for the most part game rentals are a thing of the past, no?
Gamepass could be classified as rent, just a really long rent until it dissappears into the ether... But then that would require every game reviewed actually showing up on Gamepass.
first thing that stuck out to me in retexturing of this game 8:00 normal map on skin as detailed as this needs subsurf scattering or it'll end up looking like combination of orange peel and sandpaper in close up shots (light should penetrate the skin instead of creating hard shadows on the surface)
I missed this when it first came out, and this looks GREAT. Don't know that I love the open-world trend but seeing as this is an older game the scope is much smaller than what they're churning out these days. I also appreciate how this review parallels to your recent review of the Kingdoms of Amalur Remaster. You're nothing if not consistent, and always holistic, which is why you remain the best reviewer on this platform.
@occultopal took me just over 12 hours just following the story, part of that was being stuck on two missions - the rest was pretty easy. Added a shedload of hours in free roam and replaying Chapters to pick up all the collectables I missed...
@occultopal 12 hours. They have a free roam mode. I haven't done that so much. But there are collectibles and stuff. The story also has great replayability.

MusicChannel say that about Mafia 2 lol every character had the same animations I have no problem with this Tommy isn’t 100% the same feels like a different character already
I like the new format (or idk if it's that new or i missed some reviews xd) with the sound being at the end and the gameplay second! As always great review man
Story SPOILER: . . . In the original game you could go to Yellow Pete right before the last mission, the last fight. He fills you with guns and don't have to approach that last fight with that puny pistol. I wonder if it's the case in this remake also.
At first I despised M3 and thought it was a chore. I think around chapter 4, it clicked for me and I fell in love with the story and found gameplay loop fun. This was on my 6th or 7th attempt picking this game back up just trying to understand why it was a chore, but then it clicked. The 3 dlc was brilliant
I’ve been looking forward to this game and review. Always been interested in mafia stuff. Shows, movies, games, etc. When this comes out, so begins the journey 1-3! Thanks for another helpful review Karak!

Pro tip: The true value in this game is the story. It's a perfect game to just watch a Let's Play on TH-cam and save your money. I reccomend Christopherodd. Not too douchey. Not too quiet.
My friend was the one who had the gaming PC back when the original released, I never got to play it but I knew he liked it. Now that I am older with a set up I can experience this game for myself in definitive edition.
I still don't understand why you get demonetized. TH-cam headquarters is full of a bunch of political hacks, so just add a BLM logo and they won't demonetize you.
I loved the original, but I fear they are victims of evolution in this area. The first game was an open world which was very new and inventive. It was based in realism, so cars drove slow and felt clunky to drive to model the state of cars from that timeframe. With a reboot of the original, keeping to that effect will alienate players because they want to drive fast and will misconstrue clunky driving as a game flaw rather than intentional decision to mirror the time.
They have modern options for all of that. Driving stick vs automatic. Traffic simulation vs video game driving. Or just skip non-mandatory driving all together. Gameplay feels dated, but not terrible. Drive, shoot, occasionally punch people. Typical stuff. The world and the characters are what make the game worths playing and they nailed it.
I'm assuming some of the subtitles and mission objectives being blurred was to avoid spoilers. Thanks, not many people think to do that
He's very good at that. Even when he talks about parts of the game its vague enough to not give anything away. By far the best reviewer online
I was wondering what that was about. That's a nice touch. May be the best game reviewer on TH-cam right now.

This looks really fun I’m just kind of disappointed that it sounds like the controls weren’t updated to the same level as the presentation
I mean the controls are easier to get behind than the original. And the gamepad support is great too
TheFalseKingslayer yeah I played it a little last night and had no problems with it! That pop in when driving outside the city though, DAMN! Haha I like the game though great characters
@@Chris75717 all I ever wanted was the be able to play through the story of Mafia 1 (which I adore) without the utter unplayability of the original. Never been able to get past the hotel mission without cheats
TheFalseKingslayer glad they finally came through for you. Happy I can enjoy the experience fresh as well, cheers!
Think Uncharted 1 nathan drake collection on ps4 I"m assuming. Slightly modern, but not quite.
Can't wait for tonight, been expecting this for a while
Tonight?
I ordered on Amazon and it hasn’t shipped yet smh

@@TheGamersGrotto I think it's 7 actually, i'm pretty sure I read 19:00 EDT. The article may have been wrong though.
@@chrisp.400 I got it as part of the trilogy the value is insane.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. ACG is the only TH-cam channel I trust for reviews. This man is the 🐐for sure.
Looks like a good game, but it's 2K and they're using denuvo, so this goes into the secret 5th option for me.
Play in the store? Same.
So what if it's 2K. And who cares if they are using "denuvo". Either play the game or Don't. Not hard to do.
@@mannyrodriguez3933 A lot of people care if it's 2K because they're a terrible company with terrible business practises. And a lot of people care if they use Denuvo because it's software that has been proven to negatively impact games performance.
Just because you don't care about a company's business practises doesn't nobody else should.
This man is the goat, even blurs the subtitles to avoid spoilers
This review was my deciding factor to buy it, so thank you. 10/10 reviewer
Did you enjoy it?
I appreciate you took the time to blurred out the spoilers, great review
The saboteur also deserves a remake, it's such an underrated game
I agree.. playing it right now .. they just need to turn down the enemy agro range.. sniped from all angles all the time
A great idea that was poorly executed.
Oh man I'm so glad it isn't crap :D
Always wanted to experience Mafia 1 but never could bring myself to play the clunky original. Seems like now is my chance!
the remake is way more clunky than the original.
“High-end affluence or low-end flatulence”
This man does not miss
As someone who never played this I'm actually looking forward to experienceing the remake as my first impression
I’m sorry to hear that.
yes

Back in 2002, I played the original version of Mafia nearly every day for a year or so and it was much better than this remake. I'm not sure why the developers of the remake stripped out the open world and dumbed down the weapons. There's no freedom like you had in the original. It was like a better version of GTA3 back in 2002. Oh and the remake doesn't use the Mafia theme enough, its an amazing piece of music that really sets the tone of the story.
Playing it on plus and I’m loving it. Had open world fatigue so I’m glad there isn’t a thousand checkpoints
I am buying this game soley based on the time period. Everything else is a bonus & oh what a bonuses we have here.
I loved LA Noire & is my only platinum trophy. That game made me want to play any game code to that time period & this remake looks amazing plus your review makes it an easy purchase for me.
I am getting trilogy as it's only costing me another $10 for 2 more games.
This might be the last game I buy before PS5 depending on rogue squadron review and if I broke my vow not to buy an EA game which I have not for 4 years.
Maybe a loop hole of someone getting it for my birthday?
Macksta you are not getting Valhalla?
@@callisto537 Sorry don't understand your question regarding Valhalla when I am taking about LA Noire & Mafia.
Can you please be more specific.
You said you are not buying anymore games after Mafia. I am buying Mafia and Valhalla for sure, and then probably only ps5 games
Been waiting for this review
I've played The Godfather (2008), so many times. Loved the style, and honestly smaller open world. This reminds me so much of that. This looks pretty damn great. I'll take Godfather-esque style over GTA every time

Repeatedly tap this for a stupid, fun time.
You were not wrong 😂
The only thing I remember about this game was that early on whenever Tommy pulled out his smokes a gunfight or chase sequence immediately followed. Oh, and that awful race track mission.
If ACG says buy it, I freaking buy it. Have no choice here.
Or you could follow your own desires...😬😬😰

* Terrible AI.
* Terrible gun play.
Oof!
Rdr2 combat mechanics were not good at all lol.
The way you present games is great, but the colorful narration makes these videos so great. I'll laugh once a video I watch because of those
10:38 Why do the voices sound like that? Sounds like there’s a filter over it. Doesn’t sound good to me.
Yeah you’re right, it doesn’t sound like they’re in a room talking.
At 8:03 sometimes this is actually a mechanic for the AI, they give suppressive fire at the last spot they saw you in, so if you move for a flank without them spotting you, you can still see they will be aiming and firing at the location you were in
As always such a great review
Waited so long for this review and I am glad it does not disappoint ^^
Don't know what some of the reviewers expected about the world, gameplay and mission design...
Even Red Box stop renting out games
@@jazzycup9274 exactly. I thought about this too, and the limited nature of what appears on the service is why I didn't mention it.
first thing that stuck out to me in retexturing of this game 8:00 normal map on skin as detailed as this needs subsurf scattering or it'll end up looking like combination of orange peel and sandpaper in close up shots (light should penetrate the skin instead of creating hard shadows on the surface)
This is Hangar 13’s redemption!
Nope, this is just a Remake. Its good because of its Story which is by Daniel Vávra (Warhorse Studios/2K Czech), not because what the Remake changed.
@@Andarus Story in Mafia 3 was excelent as well, they only messed it up by gating the story behind open world mechanic mile stones.
@@Srefanius Not really the story was ok but predictable the gameplay was fun the rest was meh.
@ITS MAAAM Makes about as much sense as a random Taxi driver becoming a Made Man
I missed this when it first came out, and this looks GREAT.
I just finished it this morning. I loved every second of it.
occultopal For me it took about ten hours.
Already bought it and it came a day early for me lol but What a great game, A remake up their with likes of RE2
And the 1st dive i had into the Mafia series was Mafia 3 lol so i cant wait to play through them all again!
Great Review as always Karak!
2:01 LOL Tommy animations are a carbon copy of Lincoln.
Why change something that’s not broken?
@@leahtofu Because they are different characters
MusicChannel say that about Mafia 2 lol every character had the same animations I have no problem with this Tommy isn’t 100% the same feels like a different character already
The funny part is that he says that the Animations of Tommy proof that white man can't jump while he is using the animations of a black man (Lincoln).
Who cares?
Great video! Always love your commentary and funny references. One of the best review channels on youtube.
Been refreshing youtube at 11 AM just to find this review. Thanks!
I like the new format (or idk if it's that new or i missed some reviews xd) with the sound being at the end and the gameplay second!

Dr. Fauci really had a different job back then. But he aged well!
He was in Red Dead 2 too. Strauss

In the original game you could go to Yellow Pete right before the last mission, the last fight. He fills you with guns and don't have to approach that last fight with that puny pistol.
I wonder if it's the case in this remake also.
So, Hanger 13 redeemed themselves with this one? I loved the story of Mafia 3 but the rest was..... eh. The DLC was fun.
If only Mafia 2 received this much care and attention. And now we may never get that...
I’ve been looking forward to this game and review. Always been interested in mafia stuff. Shows, movies, games, etc. When this comes out, so begins the journey 1-3! Thanks for another helpful review Karak!
Same here man!!! Got into mafia stuff due to watching Goodfellas and these 3 games look sick. I've played a bit of Mafia II and it's pretty good
Thank you for the great and timely video! I'm not a native so sometimes I do get lost in mids comparisons and metaphors but I enjoy the on-point delivery, thank you again for the great content and keep them coming!
Last time I was this early, Mafia Definitive Edition was called Mafia.
Loving coming back to this masterpiece. Now next that I want for a remake is one off my Rockstar favorites and that is L.A. Noire
Pro tip:
The true value in this game is the story. It's a perfect game to just watch a Let's Play on TH-cam and save your money.
I reccomend Christopherodd. Not too douchey. Not too quiet.
Just bought the whole trilogy pack. I love Mafia!
I'm really curious what WorthABuy has to say about this game.
Doesn't seem like he likes most games.
If the game wasnt made in 1990, Mack won't like it lol .
Always the only review I need to see on YT. Thank you Karak!
damn this looks really cool. will have to wait until its around 70% off tho, don't have the money
@shaun mcsorland Depends on the sales.
If it flops -70% will be very soon :-)
My friend was the one who had the gaming PC back when the original released, I never got to play it but I knew he liked it. Now that I am older with a set up I can experience this game for myself in definitive edition.
Paulie looks like my cousin Jason. I wonder if he always has to poop as well?
This game is still probably the definitive Mafia game for those wanting to capture the feel of a Godfather movie set in that time period.
As a player of the original Mafia i cannot recommend the Game to the vet players
Love your energy, colorful language when narrating, and being articulate. My gut tells me you listen to metal.
Hey man. I’ve always liked your take on reviews and have based many of my purchases on your vision of the products!!!!!
