Let's deep dive into Culling Voices. Gear used: Revv G3 > Torpedo Live (ML Sound Labs IRs). Apologies about my voice audio, the lavaliere mic battery died during filming.
This song has brought tears to my eyes multiple times I’m so excited to finally learn how to play it. It’s so full of emotion love the chord progressions so much thanks Greg for putting in the time and effort🙏🏻
I experienced culling voices live yesterday I've always loved it, but you'll never get this great sound again that you experienced live It left me speechless and I felt like in a trance
Thanks again. Been following you for years. You definitely helped me out tons of times and contributed to my progress as a guitar player. I kind of miss the complete playthroughs that you did in the past after the tutorial. Anyway, you help out a lot!
I've seen a few of your videos before, and one of the things I note about you is your rather infectious positive attitude and the manner in which you make these lessons so approachable. Subbed and joined your Patreon. Looking forward to learning a lot from you. Thanks!
You’re channel has be so influential for me. I’ve been playing guitar for about 5 months now and your tool videos have really motivated me to become a better player since day one almost, so thank you. Also, you should consider doing some mastodon videos in the future! Divinations and Quintessance are both great songs (so is blood and thunder). Anyways, thanks so much, keep the videos coming!
Man that 2/4 power chord based riff directly after the intro is sooooo powerful when it kicks in. Whenever I listen to the song and this kicks in, I'm like yesss this is Adam saying "here I am dudes and I've got something to say \m/"
Godbless you mate! ❤️ Thanks to you i've got a courage to start to learn to play Tool songs! I've learned Pneuma already, and I've started to play that one. That wouldn't happened without you! So much appreciate your lessons! ❤️😇🙏
Thanks a lot, super useful as always. I love this song. It reminds me of the You Lied cover with the droning ethereal intro, the gregorian vocals and the big groovy riff that is super fun to play.
Funny, one of the first things you said was they probably wouldn't play it live. I'm here cuz they played it live in Idaho Falls and it was one of the unexpected highlights of the whole show
Practicing this several nights a week, slowly getting the hang of it. I feel like Pneuma is so much easier. This one feels more dynamic and raw. #noob thanks, Greg!
awesome tutorial. i got a pretty good ear for picking up songs but I was definitely stuck on this song. appreciate you puttin this video out. got a slide guitar version of descending on youtube if you wanted to check it out. some of the melodies and rhythms are off in my video (my apologies) but I think the TOOL vibe still comes across
correct me if I'm wrong, but is this the first time Jones has ever used that F# chord at the 4th fret??? I can't think of any other Tool track where that chord is used - sounds cool though.
You hear something so simple and elegant on the album then realize, the only way I can come close is to dumb it down with maybe just the sing string, single finger.... play the proper rhythms, timing but not able to use more fingers. GREAT SONG. Feels incredibly Tool when it finally builds up.
Amazing howto! I love playing this song. Could you post your settings of the REVV G3, how you use it for your tool sound? That'd be amazing. Take care & have a good one. All the best from Frankfurt/Germany.
7empest gonna be awesome, but she will be a long one, lots of riffs to break down in that juggernaut. Looking forward to it. This was great btw, don’t want to overlook the current work. 🤘🤘
Try to learn the intro to sweet child o mine, you'll learn string skipping and cross stringing will seem like a piece of cake, if my experience is anything to go by. Good luck m'dude
Possibly my favorite Tool song ever. I ignored it for a while after the album came out, and within the last couple of months, I've decided that it may be one of my favorite songs I've ever heard. That's a lot going on in that song, and it's so tastefully understated that it just doesn't 'grab' attention. Beautiful song.
Like I said in the pinned comment, my mic died during recording and I had to rely on the shotgun mic (which is picks up everything). And for brevity, I did not edit out all parts I was playing.
My only fear is that once I learn this song, I won't do anything else but sit around and play that intro all day long. I'll forget to eat. My kids will wonder where I went and why daddy doesn't talk tot hem anymore, and my wife will leave. But that'll be okay, because I'll have that intro.
I really struggle too, especially as a beginner, but I find in I drop my thumb right down to almost the underside of the neck I can open up my pinky better. Might not be the best technique

Is it cs3 with lithiums? Sounds awesome!
"I wouldn't imagine they're going to play this song live" One of the greatest parts of the 2022 tour
I was just thinking this after seeing them a few nights ago 🤘
seen them play it live also... all sitting in the front of the stage... super cool experience...
The big reflective confetti made it downright magical. A high point of my 28th and 29th TOOL shows.
I was debating whether they’d play The Patient or Culling Voices, but they ended up playing BOTH at my concert.
It was on the 21st of January
Loved this song in Boston in February.
This song is under appreciated like crazy
100%!
Nice pfp

The guitar he is holding his own of the most beautiful guitars I have ever seen. I have to find this thing and buy it now
I experienced culling voices live yesterday

Love this song and they DID play it live in Denver!

Saw this song live a week ago, now obsessed by the experience, thanks for the tutorial!

The ending is by far the best part of the song.
Dont you dare point that tutorial at mmmmeeeeee
Lmao
good one! made me laugh \m/
Heated comment sections we’ve never had
I'm dead asfk
My fav song off this album !! Been waiting for this vid thank you sir
That “groovy” rift is so cool.
I havent learned Descending yet, damn this came out fast.
If Culling Voices has a 20 minute video, I'm assuming 7empest will be 9 hours
Honestly can't get enough of your content! Much love and bless to you and yours!
That opening riff is best heard through headphones! Sounds empty and hollow, just the dissonance ringing out in your empty head!🤘🤘🤘
Godbless you mate! ❤️ Thanks to you i've got a courage to start to learn to play Tool songs! I've learned Pneuma already, and I've started to play that one. That wouldn't happened without you! So much appreciate your lessons! ❤️😇🙏

Insane🔥. Thanks man!
Oh shi- we’re finally getting to it boys. I can already feel 7empest coming. Been waiting for it for so long.
You’re the best. Thanks Gregory.

Yayyyy, my favorite! Thanks Greg 🙏
That was a great tutorial Greg. Thanks
They played it live last night
Can't wait to see you nerd out over 7empest. Gonna be a big one for the channel, I bet.
16:45 - 17:20 - Lol. What happened there?

Hi I hope you’re still around. How did you get the guitar tone for this?
Nothing sounds better than a nice chunky heavy drop d power chord
where can i get the backing track?
It's funny, the song is about internal disharmony - and Jones uses disharmonic and dissonant notes. The sound of struggle.
I've been looking at mapping out a kiesel, what pickups are you using?
Do you have a video for cross stringing? I’ve been trying it and my finger screw me up every time.
Try to learn the intro to sweet child o mine, you'll learn string skipping and cross stringing will seem like a piece of cake, if my experience is anything to go by. Good luck m'dude
Can we also get some Opeth lessons in the near to distant future, please? Thank you for all that you do kind sir.
Awesome, but just waiting for 7empest!
Is the TAB not available for 1$ tier on subscribestar?
awesome
Are those the lithium pickups?
idk why but ive used 3 different tuners and it sounds like the frets are different than what youre showing
Underated song from their latest album

I really need a good backing track for this song
Can anyone help?
The intro tho immediatly i was like Diissssseeeemmboooodddiiiiiieed voooiiiceessss deeeeeppen myyyyyyyyyy 😅
Suspiciiiiousss tendennncieeeees
this song always gives me a mastodon vibe
Not sure whats going on but it sounds like you have a delay/reverb on your vocal mic and the picking is super loud?
Awesome tutorial as always though!
Like I said in the pinned comment, my mic died during recording and I had to rely on the shotgun mic (which is picks up everything). And for brevity, I did not edit out all parts I was playing.

Its physically impossible for me to have my fingers on the 11th fret of the G string and 7th fret on the B string without muting the B string :/
I really struggle too, especially as a beginner, but I find in I drop my thumb right down to almost the underside of the neck I can open up my pinky better. Might not be the best technique
i struggle getting a clean note with the 7 - 11 intro anyone else? my fingers look contorted trying :( haha
yes lol i wish i had bigger hands. I tried on my strat vs les paul and its a little easier cause the neck is less thick but fuck its hard to master
my hand hurts :,(
Anything happens to ole Jonesy and I think I know where Tool will look for a guitarist. Just saying...
I've been doing 7/11/11 x6, 7/11 X3 then descending. Lol way over complicating it xD
