Here's a little tip for you Matt. When taking out something like this before removing anything, TAKE PICTURES lots of them of where all the wires are connected to and where all the parts are mounted. The more pictures you take the better because you'll have a reference of where everything is supposed to go. You likely plugged a power rail into a signal rail and fried the chip. Some connections use the same connectors for both signal and power so watch out. Sometimes there is text printed right on the board what each connector does. I use that when I'm modding electronics mostly amplifiers where to inject audio. Good to see this machine back up and running minus the lights.
10-4 roger that grey squirrel, over and out! It’s def fried and will need to get another one. You should start taking pictures of everything before and after, it well help you to remember where everything goes and how it’s plugged in. Save you time and money.
Glad you fixed the Lil Diamond, even without the lights, it looks great! I remember that machine from Journey to the claw machine days like 10 years back. I remember you taking it to meet and greets/conventions.
Matt change out the main light in the claw machine for a black light tube and then the colorful pebbles will glow in the dark kind of like the colorful rocks you see at the black light mini golf.
Glad that the Lil Diamond is back to being safely operable again, even if the lights aren't working. Personally, I liked the colored gravel better, but nothing wrong with the all black gravel. Can only imagine how long it took to complete all the work you put into the machine. Excellent video Matt!
Great 👀 appeal, Matt! It is so simple, and yet it will yield greater plays and return plays! Very few vendor owners put that much care and quality back into their machines. Top Notch!
That little metal thing shaped like a moon is called a C clip or an E clip depending on shape. It went a little too fast for me to tell. Also sometimes called a retaining clip
@@arcade_mattthey’re also used on store front doors that have push bar devices. In the trade I’m in we call them Jesus clips because they’re easy to lose and have you saying cheese and rice
Matt is a gaming whiz on both sides of the counter. It's pretty amazing that you can make fixing a claw machine this interesting for the masses. Here's to another 11 years with Lil' Diamond.
Played the Arcade Online and won 2k tickets! Thank you, Matt, for something fun and new! I can play these games with my kiddos at home (we don't have an arcade in our area, 😢).
Also the Reason the chip exploded is likely due to it being shorted by the original power supply when it died, the new power supply has no overcurrent protection so instead of noticing the shorted chip it merely just pumps more and more voltage through until the short burns itself out. I have a universal laptop charger that has blown the shorts out of three machine's conveniently reviving two of them!
Hey Matt I have a couple of tips for you, I actually have the Hot Diamond claw machine which is the bigger brother of the Lil Diamond. When that chip got burnt out it could have possibly been from the old power supply. I looked inside my machine to see if this was the same power supply from what Smart Industries gave you but I could not tell. Another Mod you could do with this machine is replacing the sound chip. You could make it play Pirates Chest claw machine music because that might fit better because you have the gravel in there now. Let me know if you have any questions Matt. Thanks :)
Hahaha when you were filling it with the gravel, i thought "oh, it would look cool if he put diamonds around the edge of the glass" lol. I guess we have the same taste 😂
That little moon shape clip is called a C-clip, easiest way to remove them is by a pocket screw driver (not a Phillips (cross but), also easiest way to get the clip on is by needle nose or channel locks
I wish you could do a Carnival / Arcade cross over video and see if you can win an identical prize ( super large plushy ) cheaper at the Arcade or the Carnival? Seeing a split video would be awesome!! Plus.. bring back mini putt challenges!!!
Matt I've been a fan for so many years and found one of these machines and just bought it. Can you do a detailed showcase of all the internals and settings? Thanks
Epic repair! it has lasted a long time! Those power supplys blow up over time, sometimes the voltage can go higher or just cut out so lucky it didnt do more damage and did you make sure the polarity of the plug that went onto the light pcb was the same way? Nice vid as always!
Just replace the circuit board for the lights. That one is probably really old too. I used to work on circuit boards and usually its something in the circuit board that needs fixed. It will be easier to just replace it if you don't know how to do it yourself.
went to *Leersdale* to play this arcade!! They *Desperately* *NEED* *AIR* *CONDITIONING* in there!!! unbelievably hot at times! enjoyed the retro style games though! I went to your machine today Matt! I’m glad to see the Lil Diamond running good. I won a plush and 2 packs of Pokémon cards, then I won a keychain from your stacker game, thanks lot! 😄 I am visiting Pittsburg rn so I was able to go to zone 28 and the go kart place you are always go to!
I was just wondering how your arcades were doing. Glad to see they’re still going and you doing maintenance. I still love watching you play. Just curious about your own arcades too. Goober Jenny just saying hi 👋. ❤❤❤
That screw that was tight was the equipment grounding. Just grounding electrical faults of abnormal high amperage to a ground path to protect your machine and the low voltage power supply. You need a multimeter to read voltage readings going from terminal blocks or connections. This will give you a reason to why it burnt out from over voltage or it just being old, but at that point just replace it. Resistors and thermal heating protection and capacitors etc. Each colored wire is just a communication signal to the circuit board. It should be tag labeled your right, shouldn’t have to guess.
yea or at least different color wires - I hate that they didn't have the original one that came with the machine but sold me this other "compatible" one.
what i would do is reach out to the manufacturer and see if they have a wire diagram, before you replace that chip board i would check all your wiring, it could be as simple as a bad light bar, but it could also be a wire or another board shorting, if i lived near ya i would come and take a look with ya to help
You probably have a bad stepdown transformer so the 110v coming in isn't stepping down to the 24v for the lights that's why it's burning out the board. J/s look into it! Hope this helps 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
if you check the chip, there should be a chip number on it. google that number to find the data sheet of that chip. The data sheet should tell you what voltage the chip is rated for. Make sure the power supply output going to that chip does not exceed the rated voltage. Only thing is that you’ll probably need to solder a new chip on the PCB. It’s most likely 3.3V or 5V DC. You most likely put the higher voltage output pins from the PS to that PCB. Hopefully you get that working again!
When power supplies die they can surge and damaged components on the way out. It’s also possible that the light controller shorted and took out the power supply. The new power supply may be supplying too much voltage. My guess is it was the power supply dying that damaged the light controller. Replace the light controller and see what happens. May not hurt to verify the voltage on the psu side and see if it matches the controller.
Matt, I believe that's called a snap ring that goes on the joystick. They actually make a special tool that works beautifully for removing and installing those snap rings.
As a kid I'd be floored if I saw that machine. I'd be like.. damn all that birthday money is going to be gone asap but that's okay I got my pocket wrist watch.
I feel the wire on the board that fried were flipped... hard to know without the diagram for sure as I can't read the chip numbers to know the pins. The chipset is easily replaceable too no need a full board change if ever.
Relaxation... Thy name is Arcade Matt. i agree he should be a national treasure and im not even American lol. Congrats on another amazing video and thanks for all your hard work. its appreciated
Its probably because of the power from the supply -- too much power for that board to handle most likely. But it also could be because now the new power supply is in there everything else is just as old as the old power supply was so at some point you may have to replace many pieces.
Brilliant video as usual! I tried signing up in the UK to the arcade online but it only gives the options of US, Australia or Singapore? Is it not available for UK? Thanks!
im glad you didnt get burned, cuz i was just deep frying zucchini, and well, this is the first time after a few months, not the last time where i did something stupid which schools i dont think even teach at all
Hope you guys enjoyed the repair video!

Indeed! Either take photos or have the schematic on hand.
It looks like you fried the General Illuminating circuit by using the wrong power connector.

Thanks 👍

You needed to test the voltage coming out of the power supply before you hooked it up the machine. Then dialed it back if it was to high.
That little moon shaped thing is called an "E" clip
Great video arcade matt
if you check the chip, there should be a chip number on it. google that number to find the data sheet of that chip.
I think it looked better with the coloured gravel mixed in!

When power supplies die they can surge and damaged components on the way out.
It’s also possible that the light controller shorted and took out the power supply.

Yep. The backfeed, or when there's a short or bad connection, on a circuit when it blows can cause damage in other spots.
