Born for Route 66 - Jamie and her 1967 Pontiac GTO | Why I Drive #22

  • Jamie Saavedra was born on Route 66 in Albuquerque, NM. Her parents brought her home in a Pontiac Catalina. She grew up working on cars with her dad and eventually grew up to be a diesel mechanic. She saved up and eventually bought her dream car: a 1967 Pontiac GTO.
“You definitely get that sense of Americana when driving an old American muscle car on Route 66,” says Saavedra. “This road really changed our country and how people think about cars, and it’s pretty special to experience it in a car like this, much the same way that it would have felt forty or fifty years ago.”

Depends really about what type of car. The old pickups hardly had attention to detail just a metal cab with the red carpeted interior and a bench seat. I did like their mechanical simplicity though but they rode like the axle was bolted to the frame. In the 80s to early 2000s trucks had horrible cheap plastic details as well. Cracked dash and peeling trim was normal in them. I do like classic cars though, I'd like to own a Ford Galaxie and restore it.

Congratulations Jamie: 2 years later. The 67 “Goat” GTO is my favorite. A 400 ci 4 barrel like yours with the his hers shifter or a 421ci tripower set up would be my dream car. Well that or a 69 Chevrolet SS with a 396 (actually 402) and a 4 speed. Ah. Those cars. I hope that you’re still enjoy that GTO. Oh! Hey Jamie as a retired over the road trucker I got out there past Albuquerque more than a few times. Great place to own that beautiful GTO. You ever spend anytime over at Sandia? Take care and all the best to you. Be safe.

I've owned a 66 tri power GTO and a 67 400, both 4 speeds. The 67 was under-rated at 360 hp I think as it would do 120 without even kicking in the huge back barrels of the quadrajet.
What I loved most about these cars was the famous "whine" they made as you rowed through the gears.

The elusive one in a million car girl who is a better catch than the car itself. Most women I've ended up with are so jealous of the time a car guy spends with cars that they hate them, (both the car and guy) and make owning a car like this a miserable experience (at least until ultimatum day comes...LOL).

When I was 15 and very much a car enthusiast, my older brother, with no advance notice, brought home a new '67 GTO. I was in shock! 'Same blue as Jamie's, same dual-gate automatic. He said 'Hop in' and we jumped onto the nearest freeway on-ramp. The sound! The acceleration! And, living in Detroit on a very hot and humid July day, he turned on the A/C (not a 'given,' back then), which made the experience even more unforgettable. He kept the car for the next 20 years.

Born and raised into Pontiacs in the '60's myself. Dad had a 63 Catalina, and worked at Chieftain Pontiac as Service Manager in the late 60's. He brought home a new '67 GTO one day and I knew I'd be owning one someday! Started working at 11 years old and saving up, when I turned 16 I bought my first '67. I've been through a few of them as a mechanic and restorer, and currently still own a beautiful Gulf Turquoise Metallic '67 GTO that I would never sell.

She has a valid point; The problem is, today's society has taught our kids to throw it away when it no longer works instead of taking the time to fix it, much less learning how to fix it yourself. Maybe if so many cars hadn't been destroyed by the "cash for clunkers" scam we could have continued the time-honored tradition of fixing it up yourself just to keep it on the road. Instead that situation thrust us into a new era where we just junk the car the moment the check engine light comes on and the roadside assistance tech says, "I can't fix it, you'll need a mechanic!"

" they don't make cars like they used to "
I can remember sitting waiting for a train outside a station (here in London UK) one day after work on my way home. It was around 1992 and I was 20 at the time. As I sat there I noticed that a lot of the newer cars looked pretty similar to one another, different makes of cars, but with a similar contours; this was new to me. I didn't understand anything about aerodynamics or standardization. I remember feeling a sense of 'disappointment' while I watched all these cars pass by, and remembered it used to be easier to distinguish earlier cars and that they had their own interesting peculiarities in terms of different shapes and lines which had fascinated me when I was a kid.
I understand now why I had such a knee-jerk reaction to seeing classic american car shows for the first time here on TH-cam; it was an instant love affair. It inspired me to pick myself up and start finding car shows here in the UK so that, up close, I could admire cars (like I did as a little boy) from an era when many models had panache, sleek style, and were real head-turners. I'm not against modern car forms at all, but some of the classics seem like works of art apart from their functionality. Yes, we've made progress in terms of safety and efficiency and performance, but in terms of style, those old car makers easily get my attention.
