...BTW in 1964 under Bill Mitchell and Chuck Brown (head of Pontiac since 1958) John Delorean designed the Pontiac Banshee XP-833, it would become the basis shape of the up and coming C3 Corvette. The Banshee was suppose to be equipped with a range of Pontiac V8's (from 326 to 421). Only two prototypes were ever built, one hardtop and one convertible. The hardtop had a motor similar to the one Jay said he was restoring in his Sprint (but the original 230 cubic inch motor only produced 165 hp), it's in a private collection called Napoli Indoor Auto in Milford CT. The convertible had a V8, a 421 H.O. that in this prototype convertible was 500+ lbs lighter than a big block C2, it's currently in the Joe Bortz collection along with some other very rare cars. Two unique features on the convertible were a retractable roof (into the trunk) and the horizontal taillight slits that would show up eventually on second generation Firebird.
I think this was probably one of the best Jay Leno episodes... The back and forth and talking and movie making and... And works it went into trying to replicate and restore the scar was truly amazing... My kudos to Jay Leno... I have found is series on Cars one of the most interesting and involving video things I have ever seen...
I am DEFINITELY a "Pontiac Guy". Pop had a '66 GP. 389/4bbl. We had a '63 Catalina 389/2bbl and a '72 Catalina. 400/2bbl. Drove my '99 GTP today after a new Optima red top install (only 70,000 miles on it) and my daily is the '05 GP GT2 I inherited from Pop when he passed at 93 in 2015. IT has 27,000 miles on it! Pissed me off to no end when GM killed Pontiac!
I'm also a Pontiac guy. Both "good old" and more. My first was a 1948 Pontiac Silver Streak flat head 6 with a 4 speed hydromatic transmission. Unusual because it was not the torpedo body, but it was with vacuum operated wipers both front and rear. No fender skirts, but with a sunshield. Rescued from a farmyard in 1958. I beefed up the rear suspension using shocks with external adjustable springs. I found a paper air cleaner element that exactly replaced the original oil bath element. Unfortunately I drove it to death because it was so much fun to drive. In 1964 I changed over to a corvair spyder and moved on to whatever looked best from then on. Married in 1964, started a family in 1974 and then only bought cars for utility. Now I'm 77 and disabled. But the memories are great. Wish I had more photos of my earlier cars to share…

Just noticed that '67 was probably the Golden year for American cars. Icons from all three of the big manufacturers. '67 Mustang '67 Charger '67 GTO '67 Camaro '67 Firebird All desirable and collectable..

Second-generation Chargers ('68 to '70) are the only iconic ones in the entire history of the model line. '68 was the best year in my opinion. The newly styled Mopars (e.g., Charger, Road Runner, Super Bee) looked awesome, especially the Charger, and so did the C3 Corvette. Also, it was the year of the "Bullitt" Mustang (and Bullitt Charger, of course). On top of that it was the first year of the most iconic Chevelle body style, and the first year of the Torino.

Referring to the 6 cylinder comments here and some other episodes too, what Jay doesn't understand is that many of us love the sound of an 8 cylinder, straight 8 , flat head v, or modern v sound better than music to our ears. When I have a cammed up 8, no radio will be used unless I'm parked.
Love the guys passion about the car. Car itself looks gorgeous, and it is awesome that it actually functions as stunt car. This is what happens when your movie car guy.
Thom has been a Pontiac guy for a long time and, as you can tell, has a great deal of knowledge on the subject! Great guy that bleeds Pontiac Blue (engine color). As the president of the AZ Chapter of POCI, he is the one who got my wife & I involved in the Pontiac Oakland Club, International way back in 1988. He had a backyard full of Pontiacs at that time. Jay did a great job keeping the majority of viewers entertained as Thom's detail may have been too much for some.
The 67' GTO is my favorite GTO. The closest I got to it was a 67' Chevelle Malibu 4 on the floor. 1967 was an excellent year for car styling. Thank you Jay!
My 1st car (in 1972) was a '67 GTO hardtop in Burgundy/Black interior, Hurst dual gate automatic. 2nd was a convertible in Tyrol Blue/Parchment top/black interior, 4 speed. 3rd was also a convertible in Tyrol Blue/Parchment top & interior, 4 speed. That we do love his channel Here’s our latest video we are just starting out but if you like de boss you should enjoy ours👇 th-cam.com/video/QjCkQTGqWfI/w-d-xo.html
I love DeBoss! That GTO they built is about exactly how I would want it, personalized but easily returned to stock, and building the engine in the hotel room while on power tour was epic.
What a history! As if the GTO isn't iconic enough; now we have the Republic car that has a crazy interior execution and stuff under the hood. Roof ejection, all with a 335 horsepower stock original GTO engine with a special paint job and a seat that ejects the hero. The six inch rise to the roof to allow the air to blow it off. Just amazing. The shaved door handles. So much effort to customize the car for the movie. AF
I love this video. The car is wonderful, the owner's monomania for Pontiacs is hilarious and yet weirdly admirable, and Jay does a great job of working with him. And the sound is fantastic -- how did they get the mikes to pick up their voices so clearly in that open topped car?
What a great interview! I like how Thom emulates ET in tracking down the missing foam piece. I can imagine him saying over and over again, when he got back home "foam home, foam home!!
Jay, "Hunt for Red October", Soviet Sub,Travels the Penobscot River in Maine. During WW2, many Subs were made in the Great Lakes Ship Yards and traveled down The Mississippi.

I had a choice between a 66 and a 70. I loved the 70 and got it. it was well optioned and I put a lot of money in it. Then I got married, then she filed for divorce and the car went bye bye
Way back in my day I owned a 64 Pontiac GTO. Had a 389 4 speed an was pretty fast for a stock car. Had 325 hp an had it to 140 mph I'm guessing cause speedo said between 120 an O! Just a guess cause had that round 0 to 120 speedometer.
I saw the original cars being sold on eBay back in the day! I even checked out if it's the real deal or a replica. I love seeing these iconic film cars on the channel.
I had those side winders on my first car. A 66 Mercury Comet in 1972. 289 straight shift. I removed the shift on the column to a Hurst shifter on the floor. Then I went to the junk yard and got a set of bucket seats. A set of Key Stones and Monroe Max air shocks. Memories.

@@noth606 where ya gonna get the rockets with high explosives tho? He should make a top for it..one he can let blow off, just like in the movie... made of balsa wood or something. The fact it was made from a hard top is actually correct since in the movie the car started as a hard top. I owned the Le Mans version many eons ago, tell you what that was one hard car to kill, even if you were trying.
I wonder if this car has a monte carlo bar. Or if jay was sold the original viper being told that he'll never see anything more than 400hp again. Or if he likes wildwood brakes.
Back in the 70s, when I worked at a Pontiac, Buick, GMC dealer, not all the cars came with power brakes, but the dealership would install the boosters in the car you wanted to move cars off the lot. It was a busy time about this time of the year just before the next year's models came out.
This guy redefines passion..I totally enjoyed all 40 minutes plus..I wish jay had asked him if he’s married & what’s his wife like..probably wouldn’t let him name the kids..

I can imagine the thrill of placing it back in the car and thinking "Almost complete.." now let's find that harpoon gun!😄 Thank you Jay for this great story!
I confess the car as seen here looks better than I anticipated. When I first saw the movie I hated the part when the roof is ripped off, like that bad feeling you get when the movies destroy another muscle car - another car I will never get the chance to own!

GTO is the best looking American car in my opinion. Looks super good.
Hell yea 69 Judge will always be my favorite muscle car
These are muscle cars I would look for as well. Gorgeous in this color. (:
Jay's reaction when he hears that the harpoon gun is missing is priceless 😂😂😂
Original tyres!
you definitely don't want to hear that unless its a brand new car
Original to the movie car build, not the 1967 car (as you probably realize!)
@@UberLummox 2002, those tyres be getting pretty wooden by now
@Robert Marsh here we say autoband
People saying ‘original tyres’ is as impressive as saying ‘original brake pads’ or ‘original oil filter’ they are a consumable item and need changing.
@@freakysteve140281 in my country cars are consumable. It rains a lot so you find few cars older then 15 years
That color shifting paint works very good. Looks very blue, or black, or purple, or purple gold, depending on the light. Awesome
I don't think he knows what "Long story, short" means...
Fooooooaaaaaaaaam RUBBER.
At least it was interesting. 😂
I was thinking the same.. This guy stretches every minute he gets..
Jay completely zoned out at the neverending foam story, just look at his confused and tired face at 38:18 :-)
@@georgegherghinescu HAHA it's just so true, Jay normally is more energetic and assertive :p
Love the guys passion about the car. Car itself looks gorgeous, and it is awesome that it actually functions as stunt car. This is what happens when your movie car guy.
Jays face when he said he yelled out in theatre. LMAO
@1-UP lmao
Well at least it doesn't have 24inch wheels😕🥴..
brutisking the sequel had one with some big wheels lol
Brutisking you are so right, those wheels are a blight.
@IT'SME unless it has a built Northstar V8. As seen in Hot Rod mag. Couple years back.
The 67' GTO is my favorite GTO. The closest I got to it was a 67' Chevelle Malibu 4 on the floor. 1967 was an excellent year for car styling. Thank you Jay!
I was thinking the headlights were going to be air intakes
In the movie industry they call them "outakes". 🥁 😂
I'm sorry. Lol
Loved them all, & boy would I love to have even one of them today.
People ask me if I like TV cars and I tell them GENERAL LEE I do
I love the body style of that car, the wheels, the sound...but I can do without the flag and the name. Especially today.
Flags don't scare me

My 1989 Harley soft tail custom was painted that color in ‘99. The first time I saw it was on Jeff Gordon’s car in May1998 at the night race in Charlotte N.C. The NASCAR Winston all star race.
Back then it was “state of the art”. Nothing compared to paints of today though. Still in all a very beautiful paint job. Brings me back to better times. That’s Jay❤️
"They need more Pontiacs for that 5 lug review" 😂 Jay, to this day your still my favorite celebrity " really cool how you can just joke and ask questions and be down to earth 🌎 with us. Love ya Jay! 🤙
It was blue in the movie, haha. I am a double XX goat owner 66 from 73 to75. , 69 from75 to 76. Both had to go for college money.
I hope Pontiac secretly made a female Pontiac robot for this fella. I’m sure there would lots of little GTOs in no time.
Top comment for me! You won the internet this day! ✌
lol
BOOM
Are you on drugs?
The pontiac soulless
The GTO is the epitome of a Hotwheels car. Wonderful colour.
"you've just entered, THE XANDER ZONE"

I remember that flick. There is one hell of a difference between CGI and an actual stunt car. You could tell that headlights really were firing "rockets" and the roof really caught some air.
See the one that deboss garage just built...it’s awesome! Those crazy Canadians built the engine in a hotel room!
That we do love his channel
Here’s our latest video we are just starting out but if you like de boss you should enjoy ours👇
th-cam.com/video/QjCkQTGqWfI/w-d-xo.html
I love DeBoss! That GTO they built is about exactly how I would want it, personalized but easily returned to stock, and building the engine in the hotel room while on power tour was epic.
Not thrue in the kitchen dude n the snowmobile in the bedroom🤘👻
What a history! As if the GTO isn't iconic enough; now we have the Republic car that has a crazy interior execution and stuff under the hood. Roof ejection, all with a 335 horsepower stock original GTO engine with a special paint job and a seat that ejects the hero. The six inch rise to the roof to allow the air to blow it off. Just amazing. The shaved door handles. So much effort to customize the car for the movie. AF
Such a great use of the stacked headlights!
Thanks for having me on the show.... priceless.
I love this video. The car is wonderful, the owner's monomania for Pontiacs is hilarious and yet weirdly admirable, and Jay does a great job of working with him. And the sound is fantastic -- how did they get the mikes to pick up their voices so clearly in that open topped car?
Love the GTO. When I was a kid, my uncle had a blue one. I've loved them ever since.
First guy to pull up to Jay's garage strapped!
I doubt that.
What a great interview! I like how Thom emulates ET in tracking down the missing foam piece. I can imagine him saying over and over again, when he got back home "foam home, foam home!!

Good grief!
I know this is a bit of a meme video but you got to hand it to the guy, he really knows what he’s talking about and is clearly passionate about it so props to him in my opinion.
One of those 5 got sold for $13,000 originally! I’ve always wanted one too!
This guest really knows his Pontiacs! Great to hear you mention Jim Wangers, who I’ve met several times over the years. I have a 64 Goat. Great video.
Dear Jay, Could you please invite Bruce Campbell & Sam Raimi.
With the famous Oldsmobile Delta 88!!
Thnx!

The '66 version is the most beautiful model ever made imo :)
'65
I had a choice between a 66 and a 70. I loved the 70 and got it. it was well optioned and I put a lot of money in it. Then I got married, then she filed for divorce and the car went bye bye
@@benthallchris I hear ya'. Women....an evasive subject that will never be understood.

Jay meets Mr. Wikipedia!
I saw the original cars being sold on eBay back in the day! I even checked out if it's the real deal or a replica. I love seeing these iconic film cars on the channel.
Probably my favorite GTO body style 😏👍🚘🏡
I had those side winders on my first car. A 66 Mercury Comet in 1972. 289 straight shift. I removed the shift on the column to a Hurst shifter on the floor. Then I went to the junk yard and got a set of bucket seats. A set of Key Stones and Monroe Max air shocks. Memories.
if you fixed it so that rockets and flame thrower work, it might make it easier to get through LA traffic! lol
toot tall They do work, he said so, they just aren't filled. Fill the bottles for the rocket ejectors, and the tank for the flamethrower, then load a couple of rockets and open the valves up and you're GtG
Thom seems to be laid back and pleasant to talk to. I think I would enjoy meeting him.
There must have been a dead body in the trunk, as you can see the edit right after he opens it
There was likely an accident, they are hiding the body line where the trunk meets the quarter panel. It's really bad
Or a live body.
The guys face when he closes the trunk. 😂😂😂
Maybe Jay didn't want to show his autograph, just right of center near the top of the trunk lid.
That was an odd edit. Wondered if somebodies signature was't supposed to be shown....talent rights stuff
This guy redefines passion..I totally enjoyed all 40 minutes plus..I wish jay had asked him if he’s married & what’s his wife like..probably wouldn’t let him name the kids..
This guy really knew His stuff about the car. If he ever sells it I would like to buy it from Him. LOL
Jay knows how to get the best out of his guests.
That car is more ridiculous than KITT from "Knight Rider".
Ridiculous car for a ridiculous movie with a ridiculous plot.
Hearing someone this passionate is truly awesome. I don't get these negative comments. A guy tracking down an original piece of foam all the way to Prague when he could simply replicate it in his own shop is delightful. I can imagine the thrill of placing it back in the car and thinking "Almost complete.." now let's find that harpoon gun!😄 Thank you Jay for this great story!
Sooo... They took a low mileage factory hardtop GTO and cut the top off of it?
It's worse. We lost three GTOs, and two Tempests. They had to make five for the movie. That sucks for those of us who dream of restoring one to stock.
I used to work for the tow co that was transporting them around, I have several pics.
I confess the car as seen here looks better than I anticipated. When I first saw the movie I hated the part when the roof is ripped off, like that bad feeling you get when the movies destroy another muscle car - another car I will never get the chance to own!
Most of our muscle cars are ending up in UAE or Saudi Arabia. At least this one is still in the US!
Yeah, really killed the value of the car. Who the heck would want it now?
One of Jay's more interesting shows. He really seemed to enjoy himself. Probably because his guest, like many have noted, was quite knowledgeable and had an easygoing manner.
A PONTIAC FANGIRL. I DON'T SEE THE APPEAL OF VIN DIESEL, HE ACTUALLY CREEPS ME OUT.
Still a buster...
I Owen ed a 1967 Pontiac Tempest swap out the 6 for a Canadian 283 v8. When I was 17 years old I remember riding my bike across town to purchase it at a Car lot. Through bike in the trunk and drove it home. It was a grate car for sure. That Was Then and This Now.
