    Great to see Nick playing Purple material with Don Airey from a different lineup.
    I'd like to see Glenn singing with Ian Gillan.
    Hope Rod Evans is okay wherever he is now.

      Rod Evans can't do anything related with Deep purple since his comeback fiasco in the 80's (long story short : Rod announced the return of Deep purple with only him as an former member, did a show and there was a big riot, Blackmore and Glover demanded him and Rod was discredited from all MK1 songs)

      @@matiasz6857 Yes, I've known the bogus Deep Purple story for at least 40 years, however I'm not sure Nick Simper was "discredited" from MK1 songs by Ritchie and Roger.
      Rod invited Nick to join the fake band but Nick refused to be involved with the deception.
      From what I hear Nick agreed to a buy out from the band, perhaps that is against future royalties I'm not sure.
      Good to see people from different eras of the band playing together. I would have loved Ritchie and Tommy to have jammed and recorded it, I know they met in 1975 but it was just to talk.

      @@euanelliott3613 the buyout you mentioned happened when he was fired from Deep Purple. Rod Evans chose to receive future royalties, but Nick Simper chose to receive a sum all at once.

      @@ferrreira As part of the settlement over the bogus Deep Purple band, Rod Evans was ordered to pay over $680,000 dollars in restitution! He claimed he didn't have that much money so he was ordered to give up his royalties from the first 3 Purple albums! Rod was also ordered to give up any future money made from the music industry until the $680,000 was paid up, which put an end to his music career choosing not to give Deep Purple management jack!

    • @QuarrellaDeVil
      @QuarrellaDeVil 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Couple of guys with ties to the band that recorded it and made it popular, and anybody can cover it if they dot their i's and cross their t's. Difference here is that they're not calling themselves "Deep Purple" like Rod Evans and his nobodies did back in 1980 (something that was also waved at Simper, and he was smart enough to stay away). The result there was a serious ass-kicking for Evans by Purple's management, resulting in his loss of royalties -- I thought I read that they'd quietly been restored a few years ago -- and loss of face in the eyes of the public. Wish I could find the interview I'd seen on YT about this, with Jon Lord's talking about how it boiled down to "He who steals my good name makes me poor." Don't know about Ritchie, but Don Airey works with Ian Paice, so I expect it's not a problem. 🙂
      Personally, while I know Ian Gillan has a thing about someone else fronting Purple, I think that at this stage of the game it would be a nice gesture to bring Simper and Evans back up on stage at a show or two, let them play "Hush", and call it a day. It's not like they're going to rejoin the band and bring about a Mark I reunion with Ritchie.

      @@jonblackers4339 Ritchie's mentioned the theft of the "Summertime" riff in the occasional interview, but do a search on "Bonus Episode #15 - Nick Simper Interview" for something from The Deep Purple Podcast that aired just a short time ago. He covers that one explicitly, but I'd hoped he'd have talked about "Mandrake Root", whose riff was borrowed from Bill Parkinson's "Lost Soul". Parkinson was annoyed enough to later confront Simper about it, but by then, Simper was ex-Deep Purple and from what I gather, Purple's management just gave Parkinson some money to go away.
      For me, the big ones are those two along with Cream's "Steppin' Out" ("Lazy"), George Gershwin's "Fascinating Rhythm" ("Burn"), and especially It's a Beautiful Day's "Bombay Calling" ("Child in Time"). Some will throw in Warpig's "Rock Star" ("Fireball"), one that I think is pretty obscure and probably borrowed by more than a few bands. I wish I had some links for you, but I know Ritchie's mentioned Gershwin in interviews, and the story behind "Child in Time" is infamous in Deep Purple lore. I've seen Jon Lord talk about how Ritchie brought the riff to sessions, they played with it, and despite Jon's admonition that they couldn't just borrow the riff like that -- and this is right after "Black Night"! -- they did anyway. It's a Beautiful Day's response was to do some raiding of their own, turning "Wring that Neck" into "Don and Dewey".
      My father was a fan of George Gershwin, and I wish I'd known about the "Burn" riff while he was still with us, as I'd have razzed him about it. On the other hand, I'm hoping to sit down with Ma and let her hear "Gethsemane" from the original soundtrack to "Jesus Christ Superstar". Yeah, Ma, I used to keep you guys up at nights while I listened to "Jesus" fronting one of my favorite bands.
