The biggest hurdle for most Asian players is size and athleticism. Thanks to European and NBA basketball trends towards "space and pace small ball style basketball", those problems aren't problems anymore. I predict an Asian draft pick someday soon lighting up the league with Steph like shooting from 3.
History doesn't repeat itself in sports. After this Olympics, the small ball will be dead and buried. The era of the giants has come. Nobody wants to watch weaklings jacking up 3s from their safe space. That is not what basketball is for.
But the players who are dominating the league right now would have huge size or extremely strong and quick or both. Giannis, Luka, Jokic, Embiid. Same with the next generation, Sengun, Anthony Edwards, Vic, Chet etc... Maybe there's hope from someone like Shai. Yet, the physical difference is not just in stature but also muscle, tendon, ligaments. Part of why Yao was so injury riddled was not just due to his height but also Asians have less bone, muscle density than other races. This puts more strain on their ligaments and tendons. No doubt this contributed to his injuries. Interestingly, I think where they might achieve breakthrough would be in women basketball.
In some European Countries Basketball is Viewed and Supported like Football Teams. Its a Real Crazy Atmosphere.( And very dangerous in some games between some teams, where Violence between supporters is guaranteed ).
There’s no college game, that’s why. They move up professional ranks at different levels. 16 year old usa athlete gets award a competition that’s selected down playing against amateurs/ 16 Europeans if they’re good enough play against professional adults at different levels of the pyramids. It’s also why we can throw 1 billion dollars at soccer here and not come up with a single top 100 football player.

Awesome video, but you should put in Fiba Europe Cup in the pyramid. It is awesome starter European Cup, promotes basketball even in countries that are not on top level and in the future, if money would be available, it should be expanded and with prize funds
It's easy: Passion. If soccer wouldn't be so popular in South America you can BET they'll be as good as Europeans because they have passion. Basketball is played organized since 3yo and 4yo and we have passion in the blood, we live, breathe and give our life for our passion.
Thing you just said maybe has no sense. You worded that out in a way that it would seem basketball in Europe is bigger than soccer, and I believe that isn't the case. Soccer is the biggest sport in Europe.
From what I'm hearing (as a person who don't know much about basketball). It sounds like you're saying: NBA is more technical whilst FIBA is more tactical as in: In Europe you need more understanding of the tactical parts and more team play mentality whilst in the NBA you need more individual skill and more of an egotistical mindset (I don't mean it in a bad way btw, both ways has it's pros and cons). Am I understanding you correctly?
it is a social thing, they do not want to be flagged as communists.Apart from making fun,if NBA is going to go like this, they might start considering keeping it to the US only as it is for Rugby and these american sports, otherwise they must call it something else.
Because we produce far more elite athletes. When you have elite individual players it is easier to build around that player vs to construct simply good team guys. It is difficult to win in the NBA with just good team guys. You need superstars more often than not to carry you over-- if you draft especially well, you can create a team like championship year Mavs who can get by with less overall talent with a perfectly oiled team of role players.
Part is they took defense out of the game. In the 90s you weren’t allowed on the court if you couldn’t lock your man down. Rule changes and style of play changes mean it’s okay to get beat for 2 now if you get 3 on the other end. Change the rules back and bad defenders would disappear again. Steve Kerr was a guy that barely played because he couldn’t lock down. In todays game he would be a star
We do not usually make sport only a spectacle, for this reason, players rarely seek to stand out from the rest of their teammates. The behaviors of American society are reflected in many arenas, including sports (including basketball), the behavior of Europeans is largely different, both in politics and economics and in sports.
I have seen a lot of Podcasts with the Wagner-Bros and they planned their career in an very early stage. Youth teams, Bundesliga, College and then NBA. They did get the fundamentals in Germany, the ISO-Play and Physics in College and the rest in NBA and National team. Perfect mix of both systems. BTW: When i saw in docs their training environment in Michigan it was much much better than any faculty in Europe. Even the best clubs did not have anything near this. So, BBall in Europe is still a developing sport.
Developing sport 😂 Basketball didn't start last year, when Germany took the first gold 😂 Prost 🍻 Read a little about the history of basketball in Europe, you will be surprised... 😁
The public perception is going to be warped because a lot of the top players are currently European. Statistically and historically Europeans still don't dominate the NBA. If they did, every great Euroleague player would be making the jump to quadruple their salary in the NBA. THat said, European-style has a number of advantages: more emphasis on fundementals than current amateur US bball, superior ruleset that allows defense, better youth system...
Because even 10 years ago NBA talents were more fundamentally sound and had athleticism. But the rise of AAU has destroyed that. European Players are here to stay. Wemby, Wagner, Sengun ... the next generation of Allstar Level european Talents is already in the League. Not to mention that there are 5 more european Talents projected to be lottery picks in this years draft. Once again even as the 1st pick (Sarr). As young kids have more and more national Idols to look up to, more and more will choose to play basketball. As an example. Without Dirk, there would be no Schröder/F Wagner/M Wagner/Kleber/Hartenstein/Theiss and no World Cup Championship. And those guys (specially Schröder and Franz) will inspire the next generation of german Talents... Same with France, Serbia, Latvia, Spain, Lithuania, Slovenia... the List goes on.
The rules in the NBA aren’t enforced, defense isn’t played, and if you look at a super star wrong, calls will go against you for years. The nba is making its players lazy and unskilled by not letting them play the game of basketball. It’s become a game of trade 3s first, everything else later
.Euroleague is not closed, thet`s NBA. Teams are promted by wining in their own domestic lig and every countrys/leagues have like slots.Depends how good is your league, better league more teams can go in Euroligue. Spain have like 4-5teams, Greece 2, Turky 2-3,...ABA league is 6 countrys and best 2 teams are qualified to play in euroleague, etc,..
One thing that contributes to the play style is entering the league so young. You are smaller and slower than older men you are playing against. This means the only way you are going to succeed is using the type of style Luca or Jokic has developed
The way he described European basketball reminds me of my teams growing up as a little kid in America, which is funny because he said they were strong on fundamentals the way he described the NBA is basically every single black person I’ve ever seen play street ball at any park everstrong individual players that don’t know how to play as a team together. That’s really interesting.
They develops players the right way In Europe you are taught all of the skills on the court regardless of size. Guards learn to post up, big men learn to handle the ball, forwards learn to pass and so on. In the U.S. you can get pigeonholed into a position pretty early, especially if you are more mature physically at a young age and never learn other skills besides how to score near the hoop. Europe plays the game the right way. In Europe, the basketball system is fluid. They have the same rules, same courts, same lines, all year round. There isn’t a shot clock in some places and not in others (there is one everywhere, at every level). The three-point line doesn’t change. In the U.S., some states have shot clocks and some don’t. With rules changes between high school and AAU, it can take the focus off of on-court development. There aren’t as many parents who have an “ownership mentality” as can happen in AAU settings.
As a European I’d guess more emphasis on team play and less on individuality. Individuality is usually only permitted in European sports as long as you still play the most effective. With a few notable exceptions like Ronaldo for example. In other words you won’t become a star if you don’t take back your ego for the best result
that's what I noticed...like for european center players, they develop other skills like passing and shooting unlike american centers who are only there to defend and dunking
I live in india and man basketball's situation is really bad here I'm not saying the players here are better than players in the nba or euro league but it would be good if we got a chance I'm sure there are many tournaments in india as well but the exposure is really bad The awareness is really bad It would be really good for the upcoming generation if this was looked upon
We Europeans are good at soccer and basketball because 1 we have coaches that are architects that build a strategy or plan of actionbefore the game, the coaches compliment a mentality and a plan of how players should play and players are disciplined to the plan that coach built and they use their minds for better decisions along with physical ability. But above all basket to a European is passion
@mylesunion8413 yeah man a team that had Anthony Edwards, Jalen Brunson and Haliburton is somehow a C team, tell me another one I honestly believe the Americans are in for a rude awakening in the Olympics this year
Most of the Europeans that have gone to the NBA like Luka have been playing against adults since 16. You start learning a lot from veterans from a very young age.
let me give a simple example of team defence ,if a player has a good right hand you deny him his good hand without whoring for the drive because in paint is always the big guy.
I dunno, i grew up on the euroleague since the 80s , and it's around the level of college in the states. It's tougher very defensive and strict. There aren't many great players simply cause Europe is a football continent. Basketball is an afterthought, a distant second.
Our European players are so good because the leagues here in Europe are very good and really difficult because the top teams are all about equally good. To become a goat in europe is also much harder than in the usa. The performance density starts to get really tough here at the age of 14th,15th you have to be extremely good to dominate over a number of years.
Advice - dont use curse words in your videos, because youtube has a program that scans voice searching for curse words and then bans that vidoes where it finds those curse words. My brothers video was banned because of that. One bad word in a video was enough...
First of all you need specific genetics for the sport(height, mobility...)Same thing we are finding in black players. Who ever dominating European championship has that. Second, there is a knowledge behind. For example, 70s and 80s there was no big contact between Europe and NBA, still Yugoslav school of basket ball was really developed, or USSR at that time. And this is i think important, coaches are big deal in europe, in NBA players are. From young age, you are dedicated to tactics and this is what you focus on. What happens to euro players when they go to NBA is that they gain mass/muscle. My opinion is that, if you train white dudes from europe who are really talented, in the same way you are training black guys you would get the same product. To be honest white guys on center position are dominating NBA, for some years now. Look at Sabonis for example. What europe doesnt have is those SG/PG position to match Curry, K. Irving Le bron Klay and similar. If compared number of black people in USA(40-45milion), and if you combine all of former yugoslavia you get 17milion. Combine Slovenia,Serbia,Montenegro,Croatia you would get competitive team. Add Lithuania, another 2milion, and you are half the population of USA black players. What is my point...imagine you double those european countries combined with talent and knowledge base, i dont see that american black players are going to be better on average in basketball.
Except there are like 30-40 guys tops from those countries. whereas there are 300 black NBA players from the US. a better example would be black Canada. 1.5 million black Canadians. compare that to Serbia. 26 players are from Canada. 25 are black. there are 7 Serbians from 6 or so million players. on average black players are still much better. 24 million from balkan and baltics = 40 players 45 million african americans = 300 players
Americans dominate the Euroleague only in scoring numbers (and even that is not completely true) , that is not enough here. Without depth, strategy, team play and good defense you won't go far.
Becouse Euroball is more physical (sic!) That in 90s or 2000s would be a good joke. Especially Balkan ball. Becouse Eu are very good at tactics. Simpla working out space to shoot & more complicated tactics. 3ptrs are major! Have been. In particular in East (Lithuania,Estonia) but also South (Balkans again -Huuge). But the rest of Euroleague caught on Itally, Spain, Germany...France has suprisingly weak League but what an individual tallent - Gobert, Wemby... Turkey...what a league they built. Greece - always strong - recently 'slightly' weaker. Europe "levelled" its leagues mostly... And levelled UP.
you can see that from some quite time , USA national team struggle when they play top European nations like Spain France Serbia....and they don´t even win anymore
A lot of this is being part of the different culture of sports in europe. The system with several independant leagues all marketing themselves and the best teams competing in a european wide league is also found in football, handball, rugby, icehockey and other sports. Same for playing teenagers in top teams. That is not unusual in europe if the player has the talent. That is not something done deliberatly in order to develop basketball talent. That is just doing the thing sports teams in europe do for any sport.
Basketball is a weird sport. With only five men on the court at once snd a pretty short court, a single player is worth more in basketball than in any other major team sport that I can think of. Consequently, the league collectively has bent over backwards to accommodate some of the laziest, most undisciplined players imaginable. Generally someone like Shaq who can’t be bothered to practice free throws is still worth so much that what can you do. So when someone comes along with next level gifts and who’s put in the time to really understand the game, he’s a force of nature.
In short, players with Euro League experience are very skilled in the fundamentals of basketball. No wonder Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokić and Victor Wembanyama are making most American-raised NBA players look totally silly unless the American player has ridiculous skills like LeBron James or Stephen Curry.
Its vezenkov god damn, learn how to spell his name first and then talk about our piraeus legend, plus he doesnt take the minutes he deserves and to be honest i just want him to come back home so he get what he deserves where he is loved by everyone. Otherwise your comment its just stupid (with all the respect im just talking about your comment not you), there have been first round picks that were totally busts and they couldnt even play for a euroleague team, and some of them not even in eurocup.
Europe gets better at US sports (Basketball and even slowly but surely American Football), while the US getting better and better in Association Football.
I need repeat myself. Problem is not that europeans are better problem is that in US dont have any trainers at all and this problem is huge. US aint play basketball they just shoot and jump and this is not all game ✌
Easy: Europeans play once (two at most) and get training 5 days a week. Americans play 3, 4 a week, get days off to rest, long trips... almost no training.
I'll tell you why - because of social values. In europe, you have strong social structures, while the US is all about individualism. You can't win a team sport if everyone is playing for himself.

Isaiah won’t from miami

But the players who are dominating the league right now would have huge size or extremely strong and quick or both. Giannis, Luka, Jokic, Embiid. Same with the next generation, Sengun, Anthony Edwards, Vic, Chet etc... Maybe there's hope from someone like Shai. Yet, the physical difference is not just in stature but also muscle, tendon, ligaments. Part of why Yao was so injury riddled was not just due to his height but also Asians have less bone, muscle density than other races. This puts more strain on their ligaments and tendons. No doubt this contributed to his injuries.
Interestingly, I think where they might achieve breakthrough would be in women basketball.
only if they come out of a lab
In some European Countries Basketball is Viewed and Supported like Football Teams.
Its a Real Crazy Atmosphere.( And very dangerous in some games between some teams, where Violence between supporters is guaranteed ).
2:16 so with a quick check the last MVP of Euroleague from NA was Anthony Parker in 05-06
There’s no college game, that’s why.
NBA needs an academy system and forget college. Get the kids in Jr. high and develop them.
@@ehrenthompson7891 Imagine if the (extremely talented) young players in the US would also get proper training and development instead of only focusing on individual skills. The US would again completely dominate the basketball world for decades.
Greetings from Greece!
Awesome video, but you should put in Fiba Europe Cup in the pyramid. It is awesome starter European Cup, promotes basketball even in countries that are not on top level and in the future, if money would be available, it should be expanded and with prize funds
for such a small channel that was an incredibly in depth breakdown. good stuff
It's easy: Passion.
If soccer wouldn't be so popular in South America you can BET they'll be as good as Europeans because they have passion. Basketball is played organized since 3yo and 4yo and we have passion in the blood, we live, breathe and give our life for our passion.
Foot ball and basket ball players are physically very different.
Soccer ist 100 times more popular then Basketball in Europe
@@GAZII-zl7ziIn Greece it's equally popular. The same teams play in both. And Greek basketball teams are better than their equivalent in football.

One sad thing, that nba miss lots of players who can defend also good. Some who would lock Luka
A bit of a wrong question. It should be "why usa produces players that only good individually?"
it is a social thing, they do not want to be flagged as communists.Apart from making fun,if NBA is going to go like this, they might start considering keeping it to the US only as it is for Rugby and these american sports, otherwise they must call it something else.
@@DimitrisDrougkas lol what, teamplay = communism?
@@pavelmakarov3565 obviously joking
Because we produce far more elite athletes. When you have elite individual players it is easier to build around that player vs to construct simply good team guys. It is difficult to win in the NBA with just good team guys. You need superstars more often than not to carry you over-- if you draft especially well, you can create a team like championship year Mavs who can get by with less overall talent with a perfectly oiled team of role players.
That short clip of Macijauskas playing in my local team… sniff sniff, memories
Serbia is powerhouse of basketball!
Bro really didn’t talk about Pau Gasol
Main thing I got out of this video is that Europe needs to step up the team and league logo game!
Muhaha, hell yes!
We do not usually make sport only a spectacle, for this reason, players rarely seek to stand out from the rest of their teammates. The behaviors of American society are reflected in many arenas, including sports (including basketball), the behavior of Europeans is largely different, both in politics and economics and in sports.
The European Leagues prize actual basketball skills over sheer athleticism. A 3-pointer is still worth more than the most high-flying dunk.
Call it "the Larry Bird factor." They play the game the RIGHT WAY 😊😊🏀🏀🏀
You mean the 1992 Dream Team Effect! The Euros studied that and built around what they learned from it... 🤣🤣🤣
@@mrconfusion87 Obviously. Everybody else were just watching, but the Europeans were learning.
Developing sport 😂
Basketball didn't start last year, when Germany took the first gold 😂
Prost 🍻
Read a little about the history of basketball in Europe, you will be surprised... 😁
it isn't a developping sport, but there's much less money in it since it isn't that popular
And then why USA did not win the World Champion? Germany took the gold.
Excellent illustration!!!
The statement about Philippine Basketball league is straight facts. Its why their young talents develop slower than other countries.
The rules in the NBA aren’t enforced, defense isn’t played, and if you look at a super star wrong, calls will go against you for years. The nba is making its players lazy and unskilled by not letting them play the game of basketball. It’s become a game of trade 3s first, everything else later
Because Europe comtinues to follow true basketball such as one in NBA in 80s and 90s
The US is creating players with the template of Kobe, Steph, and MJ.
The Euros are creating players with the template of Magic, Jokic, and Bird
.Euroleague is not closed, thet`s NBA. Teams are promted by wining in their own domestic lig and every countrys/leagues have like slots.Depends how good is your league, better league more teams can go in Euroligue. @13:30 That's Myles Turner's lack of skillset in the NBA and FIBA.
There should be a Euroliga v NBA game. Like top 4 v top 4

Yes we play. Almost all except your Banderas Ukraina
It varies alot from country to country
Philippines government sucks as a fellow Filipino, I couldn't agreed more to this.
What does the Philippines have to do with this?😂
One thing that contributes to the play style is entering the league so young.
Great video ❤
As a European I’d guess more emphasis on team play and less on individuality. Individuality is usually only permitted in European sports as long as you still play the most effective. With a few notable exceptions like Ronaldo for example.
In other words you won’t become a star if you don’t take back your ego for the best result
NBA would be so much better if they play Eurorules and do much less advertising at broadcasts. Love Basketball but can't watch NBA :/

that's what I noticed...like for european center players, they develop other skills like passing and shooting unlike american centers who are only there to defend and dunking
I live in india and man basketball's situation is really bad here

We Europeans are good at soccer and basketball because 1 we have coaches that are architects that build a strategy or plan of actionbefore the game, the coaches compliment a mentality and a plan of how players should play and players are disciplined to the plan that coach built and they use their minds for better decisions along with physical ability. But above all basket to a European is passion

Most of the Europeans that have gone to the NBA like Luka have been playing against adults since 16. You start learning a lot from veterans from a very young age.

Tldr: they take international competition on a frequent basis very serious.

Advice - dont use curse words in your videos, because youtube has a program that scans voice searching for curse words and then bans that vidoes where it finds those curse words. My brothers video was banned because of that. One bad word in a video was enough...
Where's Winston Bishop now?
24 million from balkan and baltics = 40 players
45 million african americans = 300 players
Nice seeing Pat Bev at 1:51
Americans dominate the Euroleague only in scoring numbers (and even that is not completely true) , that is not enough here. Without depth, strategy, team play and good defense you won't go far.
Becouse Euroball is more physical (sic!)
That in 90s or 2000s would be a good joke.
Especially Balkan ball.
Becouse Eu are very good at tactics. Simpla working out space to shoot & more complicated tactics.
3ptrs are major! Have been. In particular in East (Lithuania,Estonia) but also South (Balkans again -Huuge).
But the rest of Euroleague caught on
Itally, Spain, Germany...France has suprisingly weak League but what an individual tallent - Gobert, Wemby...
Taught to focus on fundamentals and winning through teamwork?
2:08 that has to be DAVIE504 right?
Why I prefer watching Euroleague to the NBA? Defense and intensity.
the dude starts the video ... slovenia, france, greece ... never mentioned spain, which is the best european team over the last 25 years ... xDDD
There are too many very good teams in Europe to mention them all.
No wonder Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokić and Victor Wembanyama are making most American-raised NBA players look totally silly unless the American player has ridiculous skills like LeBron James or Stephen Curry.
especially in the Balkans, where the coach curses your whole family once you miss a shot, which is a valuable lesson for players development
For every Giannis and Luka there's five guys that wash out. Vensenkov was Euroleague MVP and he's struggling to get minutes in Sacramento.
for every Jayson Tatum there is 5 that wash out. Weird statement
That’s like saying for every All Star player are 20 guys barely getting buckets. Duh?
I mean yes most pros won't become superstars, that's how pro sports work
Its vezenkov god damn, learn how to spell his name first and then talk about our piraeus legend, plus he doesnt take the minutes he deserves and to be honest i just want him to come back home so he get what he deserves where he is loved by everyone. Otherwise your comment its just stupid (with all the respect im just talking about your comment not you), there have been first round picks that were totally busts and they couldnt even play for a euroleague team, and some of them not even in eurocup.

Some photos in the 1990 had NBA wolrd champs
Easy: Europeans play once (two at most) and get training 5 days a week. Americans play 3, 4 a week, get days off to rest, long trips... almost no training.
I'll tell you why - because of social values. In europe, you have strong social structures, while the US is all about individualism. You can't win a team sport if everyone is playing for himself.
