Man my only & life advice for you is to Cold Cold Change your channel from Thefunguskiller to Thefungusgrower...we know what you Northern beaches people are like in Ingleside down the hill in Narrabeen on Powderworks road lol Stoked to find the Oils at The Antler!!~~~~
Some of the people from the Legendary and infamous Dee Why Beach House took a very young me to The Royal Antler Narrabeen late 1979 to see a band called Midnight Oil. I was already a music fan, but this opened my eyes to a new world of LIVE music. People were taking jugs of iced-water up to the stage and if memory is correct I think Peter Garrett poured one of them over his recently shaved head. Steam then came off his head. What a sight to see. This venue had a part of its ceiling that opened up. I remember looking up at the Stars and the Stars on stage as well. Great place on The Northern Beaches of Sydney. Midnight Oil are one of the best bands of all time.
Same here, being the youngest of my many cousins I got into this stuff very early and this gig and a very young me was smuggled into this gig... god knows how..... it was just amazing to be there on that Friday night.
In 1985, when I was a grommet hanging around Trigg Point (in my Triple J exploding head T-shirt), I would’ve given anything to be at one of these gigs.

Maybe the best live performance ever captured by The Oils…incredible recording, flawless execution by the band, and ENERGY like only they could bring!!
Regarding the comment by Ulysses8765 this recording was 100% recorded live at the Royal Antler in Narrabeen 02 May 1980. This recording was taped live by the radio station Double J team and played on air. I personally recorded it off JJ at the time onto a cassette tape and still have it today 38 years later. Double J was way before the current station Triple J. In the recording Peter refers to a Malcom, this was the Prime Minister of the time Mr Malcom Fraser. Cheers Paul
This is why bands today can't write a song that stands the test of time, this is why musicians nowadays can't play anywhere near as flawless end efficient because back then you HAD to be able to play if you were going to be a recording artist, everything was recorded to tape in analog and mistakes stuck out like a sore thumb. Musicians were just so much better back then, they had to be.
What happens when a live band gives and gives to an audience and the fans give back just as hard year after year decade after decade One big family singing along, dancing, sweating, smiling both band and fans have an understanding never let each other down. The fans have recently spoken all over the world snapping up tickets to the "Great Circle tour" because every one knows Moginie Garrett Hillman Rotsey and Hirst will put on shows leaving every single punter with their jaw on the ground dying for more.
I'm one of those voices, screaming & cheering! 'Oyyy-uls' gigs at the Antler... felt like the whole place was 'taking off'!!!!!!! I guess I'm an old lady now... but I can still feel it!
Awesome!! Thank you for putting this up. I first saw them at Selinas in 1980. We'd go nuts, covered in sweat then jump straight in the ocean fully dressed. Never forget when they played Echo Beach one night. Wish i could find a copy of that.
The Antler was my local pub in those days. Saw them so many times. First time was at the Stage Door before they had a record out. Blew me away. Fan forever.
It's 2022 and the Oils are nearing the end of their final tour - ever. They've written brilliant music over the years but for me, nothing beats the first two albums. I just wish they'd have played Powderworks as a norm on their gigs.
I agree, no disrespect to their pop efforts but holy shit these guys had something going in the early years. Their more punk/hard rock influences are my favorite.
@@michellefilby I was too but I was well and truly smuggled in by my older cousins. I really don't know how I got away with it being only 14 even though i was tall for my age. My cuzzies were feeding me beers as well but it was my very first pub gig and they only took me cause they didn't want to get busted not looking after me and they all wanted to go to this gig. The times were much easier I think in hindsight.
My old man had a mate who got this recording onto a CD for him when I was in my teens and I remember hearing this for the first time and already a big Oils fan, I was like 'fucking oath', and it still remains as one of my favourite listens today, outstanding.
I say this with some bias, as I was raised on good old fashioned Aussie pub rock, but I have to say Australia produces the best rock musicians in the world. Thanks for uploading this, vintage Midnight Oil.

I love all their stuff but it's the early stuff I like the best (78-84).
Sadly i found the latest shows disappointing. Pete just does not have it any more...... and previously they would never have compromised like that. 100% or nothing. Good for those that never saw them before(they don't know what they missed), like the kids. Not Oils without Giffo!
Agree. The oils were just awesome. I was lucky enough to get on to them in 1980 when 18. Saw them around 40 times. Agree, the old stuff was the best. Is it now???
I stayed up one Saturday night when I was young around this time and saw some band I'd never heard of before called Midnight Oil playing at some place called The Royal Antler on Lee Simon's Nightmoves. The gig was awesome. It could have been this. Nightmoves would have a live set from a band every week, many of them Australian. At least that's what I remember. That show never gets mentioned like Countdown does as being influential. I discovered Midnight Oil, The Radiators etc on Nightmoves.
@@DelDuio musicians also were so much better back then they had to be, everything was recorded analog to 2" tape and mistakes or being off in any way stuck out like a sore thumb, no pro tools or auto tune.
1980 I was 10 .. I would have to wait another 2yrs til my introduction to "The Oils" .. Living 3 hours from Melb, a visit to my best friends house had him drag me out to his older sister boyfriends Kingswood .. He was from Melb, and his wagon had mags, lowered and loud sound system installed. "Got this new album we've been play'n" as he pushed the cassette inside the slot, "have a listen to this" .. 10, 9, 8 .. 2, 1 wasn't a countdown, it was an epiphany. Thanks for posting, great quality . .
I remember hanging off the rafters at that gig, sweat dripping off the ceiling and walls - I was still at school - I.D. checks weren't as they are now.
Just as an aside, this is from a rebroadcast (as someone else has stated, the "Impossible Music Festival" for 2JJ's 30th anniversary in 2005), and is not the full show. The original broadcast was live to air (on AM, so in mono), and unfortunately cut out midway through Don't Wanna Be The One due to a technical issue...
The best live recording from this period (thanks TheFungusKiller & JJJ ;-)... Wow, incredible... Another one in your archives? Please share it ;-) I do not think we can hope to hear one of these songs during the great circle tour in Europe ... maybe ... let's cross the fingers ...
Just brilliant. Remember seeing them on their first visit to Adelaide. Took a few mates along, as I had juxt seen to Sydney & saw 'Run by Night' on Sounds. There were about 30 punters there at the gig. We stood at the front. This is The Oils I feel in love with. Head Injuries is still my fave MO album.
Fantastic music from my teenage, i discovered their early records after Diesel and Dust hit Europe in the mid 80s. Their earliest days are in my opinion their best music. Rock without compromises and outstanding arrangements shaped my ears. Unfortunately not sure Garrett can still hit the notes as he could do in that time. Their early days was pure rage and emotion.
This is May 1980 and I’m thinking is Andrew James on bass here? It sounds like it I think it might of been one of his last gigs? Giffo joined in 1980 and stand in line live at Parramatta Park is definitely him so not sure about this one.
I found some tape recordings of MIDNIGHT OIL in America tour at a garage sale and talked with the lady, I paid $2.00 a cassette, I have them somewhere, I need to get them out and upload them to the internet if that is legal. they are recorded on high end oxide SONY 90 min recordings. funny how it has been 35 years since BLUE SKY MINE. time sure flew
I only saw the Oils once: NYE in Freo, '95 at the South Fremantle footy oval. A lot of their(our) message fueled the No Nukes, Enviro, Social Equity etc movements, as did the graffiti and mass protest. Quite the counterpoint to the cool breeze of corporate, military, environmental, political & imperialist hedonism, which is now a hot gust in our face.
I remember the guy [usually wearing a beanie on left stage] playing the Les Paul and keyboards intermittently or maybe Garret did some stuff on keyboards too if I'm not mistaken. James the original bass player was really young but left because of illness.
No Andrew James had left only a couple of months before this gig Not taking anything away from his replacement Peter Gifford But Andrew James was a freak If you listen to his contribution to the first 2 albums Especially the first album Well …
