  • The Tecsun DR-920C AM FM Shortwave portable radio is a solid, well built performer. A great entry into a small shortwave radio. Mine does very well on the MW(AM) band.

    Features I like about this radio:
    Medium wave performance is nice for a small radio.
    Shortwave reception is decent.
    Digital display.
    Clock.
    Alarm.
    Light.
    Analog with Digital counter display.
    Solid build quality.
    Price.
    Features that could be added or improved on:
    FM Stereo.
    Better headphone experience, tired of that low level hiss.
    A smoother tuning knob.
    Overall this radio is a great buy . Puts itself squarely between the R9012 and R9710 radios. Also for a bit more money then the Sony P26 or Sangean SR-35, your getting a digital readout radio with Shortwave capability too. Something to ponder when making decisions on which radio to purchase.

    I went to an estate sale earlier today, and having wanted a shortwave radio for a while now, I picked this one up for pocket change: $4.50, and the previous owner had quiet the sizeable collection. To the man whose belongings are now mine, thank you. I will cherish it.

    I have both brothers, the 2018-version of the Tecsun R-9012 (analog
    dial) and the Tecsun DR-920c (analog with digital display). I agree,
    sensitivity and selectivity is great for such little chinese
    superhet-radios, especially the Tecsuns. They outperform much more
    expensive radios on shortwave, especially some of the new dsp-radios
    which came recently on the market for the same price-range. Best results
    on shortwave with both Tecsuns i get with my external
    reel-antenna Tecsun AN-05. Astonishing which worldwide radio stations are all to
    catch on the bands with these world band radios. Its really a fun to tune over the bands and listen
    to far away stations from abroad. Thanks for review. Vy 55+73s

    Tecsun DR-920C is similar in reception on AM and SW like Tecsun R-9012. On FM the DR-920C has a better selectivity in comparsion to the R-9012. Another big advantage is the digital readout which qualifies the DR-9012 to a more useful radio in finding broadcast stations espcially when you use online-schedules or you like to compare the radio with stations found on web-sdr. Moreover, the DR-920C also has a better frequency-range. On AM you get the fully expanded 1600-1700 Khz which the R-9012 doesnt have or only in parts. Same on shortwave, the R-9012 has not all bands completly available and the band-splitting isnt perfect. Broadcast-band on 25m band goes from 11600-12100 Khz, Tecsun R-9012 has only 11550 Khz to 12.050 Khz, Tecsun DR-920C has the complete band in its specification 11550 Khz to 12050Khz. All in all the DR-920C is the better choice for arond 20 bucks. Both of the radios are listed as "Ultralight-DX"-Radios are tested and perform great.

    You hear that? Its analog tuning, signals fade in and out nicely and no muting or chuffing noises. This is the way.

    Nice review, that really gave me the urge to order yet another addition to my collection. A little bit cheaper from Ali.
    I really like analog radios and among them my R-911 and R-9012, but with a digital readout and a real tuning wheel, not only up/down buttons, it's a winner for me.

    And another great review... 11:57 great quote you caught there. I notice on this and on the R-9012 there are a few whistles on SW but at the price I guess this is to be expected.

    This is exactly the same as the Grundig G-1100, which was available for a short while, but never seemed to get as much exposure as some of the other Grundig/Eton radios
    I have always felt it was a worthy performer in its price class. Unfortunately, the G-1100 had the rubberized finish, which...you guessed it...has begun to break down and get sticky.

      Thank god Tecsun didn't use that. i HATE rubbery coatings that turn to sticky fly-traps after a few years.

    Tip: lift up the external antenna even on AM for better reception (no need to extend it), as it interferes somewhat with the internal AM antenna.

    Interesting that most outlets, even the Kaito/Tecsun site put SW frequency spread beginning at 5.95. But it, just like the 9012 begin at 3.7/75m. Pretty cool. I find the upper scale of SW to be far more useful.
    Now my only problem is which to get!? The DR920C or R9012? I guess I'll have to weigh my options and figure out if I really want the digital read out more than a dial.

    Informative well done review looks like it would be a good radio for those who like the advantages of digital display with the analog tuning, to bad they couldn't incorporate presets into the radio somehow.

  • @Vintage_Stephan
    @Vintage_Stephan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've owned this radio for 3yrs. Another channel mentioned awhile back that if you raise the retracted antenna about an inch or 45 degree angle to the radio. That it would help reception on MW Band and reduce the static somewhat because of the proximity of the larger ferrite antenna!
    Could you please verify this for me?!?!?!?
    I've done it that way for MW scans ever since...
    He also mentioned that the antenna is connected to the MW band and that always retract it but don't fold it completely to the radio...
    Please check Todd... 😃

    Where does the Tecsun R-909 fall into the myriad of portable radios? I get confused after listening to multiples of reviews. I'm primarily interested in FM with loudspeaker with much-better-than-tinny sound, and want to explore SW, but don't want to spend Sangean prices. I considered the Kaito KA-390 but am not sure if there's a better unit for what I desire...for example the KA-390 does poorly with SW. There always seems to be compromises. I guess I may just have to buy two radios.

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 909 is great on fm, but it is analog and will tend not to be as selective as a DSP radio. I like my 909 because it is good on all the bands. Good FM Sound and SW performance comes with a bit of a price jump. Enter the RADIWOW R-108, excellent sound and performance from that one. th-cam.com/video/FL9vU4VBuo4/w-d-xo.html

    How is the am and SW pickup capacity? Is it pickup the am station which is far away 300 km?
    Can we save the channels?

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Similar to the Tecsun R9012, which leads me to believe its a 9012 with a digital frequency counter. It will pick up stations 300km away during the evening hours. No presets on this analog radio.

      I struggled with this at first too. The process is not very intuitive or convenient compared with the more expensive Tecsun radios and the manual does not explain it very well. Like the manual says you need to turn the radio off first and you need to press the "time set" button. However, you need to HOLD the "time set" button WHILE shortly pressing the "hour" and "minute" buttons until the time has been set appropriately. Just shortly pressing the "time set" button before attempting to adjust the time with the "hour" and "minute" buttons is NOT enough. Hope this helps.
