    "It WAS you buzzing, you naughty boy!"
    Wow, the Gretsch really got close for the solo, good choice! I always wondered whether it was Paul or George Martin who played piano on this one. I've always liked this song a lot. When I first saw the film (I must've been 10 or so) I was exposed to 5 or 6 songs that seem to never be on the radio, I was amazed! So many gems that don't see the light of day much.

    • @MichaelSokil

      This is one of Paul's first standout piano songs. He used this same shuffle on "The Word," "You Won't See Me," and a few others I'm sure I'm forgetting. I'll do a video on McCartney piano styles again one day, he had 3-4 styles he'd draw from. But yep, this is a signature McCartney piano style!

    *This is the one I've been waiting for!* As I'd hoped, your version sounds glorious and very in-tune. Could you talk a little about how you dealt with the weird tuning stuff in the source track? Also, if you do what you did with "guest vocalists" on Help! how will you approach that logistically?

    • @MichaelSokil
      @MichaelSokil  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is a great point that I forgot to make in my description! John’s guitar is flat! Not quite sure how, but the song still works and holds together. But I never for a second wanted to recreate that part of the original sound of this track. Always drove me a little nuts, that dissonance. And yes, I found an isolated vocal for this tune, so I will probably put together the “guest vocalist” version soon!

    • @kevinmoore4237
      @kevinmoore4237 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MichaelSokil Thanks for the quick reply! Can't wait for the guest version! I love this song and it's been driving me berserk for years. I wound up making a mono mix from the non-piano channel of the super dry 1965 stereo mix that came with the mono box set. I don't have perfect pitch so I've never fully understood what's going on, but to my relative pitch ear, the vocals sounded out of tune but as soon as I removed the piano they sounded great. But I love the piano! Especially that little bluesy lick at 1:01. So you've finally made it possible to hear the whole masterpiece in tune. I had one theory that they just tuned their guitars to themselves and sung perfectly in tune with that and then added the piano as an afterthought, but maybe the Abbey Road "pianet" or whatever it was was at concert pitch and the guitar were in-tune to themselves below that? But the Hammack book shows guitar 2 and pianet as having been superimposed onto the same track! Every time I try to figure it out I wind up pulling my hair out so thank God you've done this version! Here's a super-clean vocal isolation (th-cam.com/video/aCQDzxoISZM/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=TheBeatlesVocalHarmony). But ... how will you you do it? Will you digitally lower your whole mix or raise the vocals? And do you yourself have perfect pitch such that your ear wants to hear everything at 440? On ones that are at 440, I've tried combining the isolated Beatle vocals with your tracks and it's absolutely uncanny how perfectly they fit. I've even made liveBPM screenshots of the Beatles' tempo with all its natural ebb and flow and yours fit like a glove. It's truly amazing what you're doing here! It's like having the full master tapes but better in some ways.

    • @MichaelSokil
      @MichaelSokil  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kevinmoore4237 Yep, it's always driven me nuts too. Processing the "guest vocal" version now. I guess I tuned to the vocals, since I didn't need to make any adjustments to match the pitch of the record! I'll post the link here when it's live.

      @@MichaelSokil Holy crap - it sounds soo good. The falsettos are just ... soooo good. And that piano lick before "the way you treat her". Oh my God. The very first backup vocal response "yes yes you're gonna lose that girl" still sounds off in the same way it sounds off on the Beatles track, so I guess Paul & George just had to take a second to find the pocket. Everything else is sublime. It somehow manages to sound better than the Beatles without sounding different from the Beatles in its essence. Quite a trick.

    Your videos are so skillfully made and much appreciated. My favorite little part in this song, unfortunately not captured here, is the transition from the F chord on the second bridge back to the E for the last verse (at 1:46 in this video). Lennon really rakes the strings on that part, and it somehow makes the song for me. Otherwise, this is a perfect recreation, well done!

    I second all the praise others have given you on this. I hope you get the fact that not only do we recognize your great talent, we all really appreciate your taking the time and putting in the effort to do this. A great big Thank You. This song has always been a personal fave by the way. Watching you play is most enjoyable.
    Additionally, I always enjoy reading the information given about the original and the replicated recording. Everything you did sounded correct on this one, but after listening to the original again carefully, I cannot hear piano after the first note at :01. Of course, they were always putting things in that were blended into the background that made imitating them impossible, so you are probably correct. Your Country Gentleman sounded right when you played it, but I do believe George played his Strat. Listen to the last note he hits at 1:22. If you were going to play this just for yourself, would you try to bend those strings like that on your Country Gent or on you new Strat? As for John's rhythm, again you sound correct, but here at home I can make my Epiphone Casino sound more like the real thing than I can my Strat. One source even suggests John is playing his 160E! Go figure. Interesting that all these years later we still discuss it. Even debate it.
    Good observation that very soon John would stop writing love songs. I think he felt he had "outgrown" that.

    Having heard the version with vocals I’m not sure that I’d immediately notice the difference. It’s that close.
    The only criticism that I have is that you’ve done the bongos too well. I’m a huge Ringo fan and his feel for timing is normally spot on but I’ve always felt that his Bongos on this track have been sloppy (only my opinion of course. Others love his Bongos bere). You’re too professional 😀

      Basically just played the shit out of them, haha. I didn't bother replicating this part note for note, except for that interesting little fill in the second to last verse. I did the same thing with "You Can't Do That" - I listened to get a rough feel for the bongo part, and just focused on playing something in rhythm that was interesting, fit the song, and felt close enough to sound right!

      Depends on the part of the song you're referencing. It's E to G#major to start the verse, but E to C#minor under the lyrics "You're Gonna Lose That Girl."

    Well this is a surprise.
    My favourite moment from the film and a song I've massacred many times.
    But if I had just seen this video online without the title or provenance I wouldn't have given it a second glance. I don't doubt that it's an accurate recreation of their recording but I'd have never imagined that Lennon used a Straocaster or that there was any piano in it at all. And then there's the bongos.
    Just goes to prove how fickle the ears are. That buzzings annoying.
