Sorry everyone, been so busy with that lithium battery explosion 2 day job and another huge rollover I didn't have time for a breakdown on this one. Still a cool video, what did everyone think?
A good truck driver will always visually inspect that the king pin is locked in.. and do a simple tug test. This guy put everyones lives around him in danger. All bc he's lazy. Drivers should lose their CDL for accidents related to not doing a pre trip. Period.
I’m a retired truck driver drove truck for 49 years always did the tug test and I always got underneath with a flashlight to make sure that the jaws were closed on the fifth wheel never had a problem always do a visual
My wife and I are so impressed with how clean and beautiful all your trucks are. It really says something about the quality of a company when they care about the little things.
Alex is such a pro, and he hustles, with no wasted steps. The traffic coming so close made the hair on my arms stand up. That's dangerous work. Great video showing all the work required when the trailer landing gear is damaged.
First again! I love working night tours lol. Edit: Josh, the breakdowns are cool but they’re a bonus, if you get slammed, you get slammed, they don’t have to come with every video, I’d like to think most of us your viewers understand and accept that. Edit to add: per your question in the description, I think the driver was very lucky. Like you said Josh, sometimes mechanical equipment will fail and you wont know it until the next part happens, like in this case, lock failed and trailer fell off. I with only knowing what you told us, I don’t think the driver is at fault at all.
@@PepesTowingServicebro I saw the short, and almost spit my coffee at my work computer. Here in nyc (dispatch for the fire dept) we get those calls allllll too frequently about the batteries burning. They burn out a store, or apartment or a house quick and easy, and those are just the small e-bike ones… your call was MASSIVE, damn lucky all that happened was blowing open doors and bulging out the can.
This is just my observation I could be wrong Josh if I am let me know. But judging the fact the driver could even back up straight to get under the trailer makes me wonder when he originally hooked it up he bent the coupler but it still held. Of course I’m sure he didn’t do a tug test but also didn’t check the coupler to make sure it fully locked to the king pin. If he would have done those steps in the first place when he hooked it up this could have been completely avoided. ALWAYS DO A TUG TEST AND CHECK THE COUPLER TO MAKE SURE IT FULLY LOCKED. It’s part of your inspection to make sure it’s locked.
I had a fifth wheel lock fail one me one time. Did a tug test pulled a trailer for about 5 mins through town multiple turns and it just let loose. This guy in this video I’m not sure about his experience lvl but mechanical failures do happen. I will never forget that day and I have done multiple tug tests from then on after hooking a trailer. Hasn’t happened since, that fifth wheel did get replaced after that.
In Denmark there was a train accident on the Great Belt bridge 🌉 track, a half-empty trailer in a pocket car in the train luggage compartment broke free from the lock to the king pin in strong crosswind storm ,the trailer hit another passenger train where the side was torn up and people were killed/injured by it.
Awesome job , being a former California resident a lot of other states don’t know how crazy the freeway s are 😱. I live in Missouri and it’s good to see mostly everyone move over, I know I ALWAYS DO!! And I use my signals for every turn , don’t know if that’s just a California thing 😵💫. Awesome video as usual, be safe out there and Great video . Peace Out ✌️
Alex. another solid rescue! I'm just glad I wasn't behind that trailer when it came to a screeching halt! It's amazing how you guys can work two or three feet away from high speed traffic while nobody slows down! Great video!
Just a note; never rely solely on the "tug test". Having done that, go under the trailer with a flashlight and visually inspect that the 5th wheel has properly closed around the neck of the kingpin (not the crown), that there is no space between the 5th wheel plates of the tractor and trailer, and that the tractor 5th wheel latch, a large pin that keeps the latch from moving, is closed. It sounds more complicated than it looks, but, it only takes a few seconds and it can save a driver from experiencing problems like this.
Great work Alex, the wrecker driver is new to me, he seems like another hard worker and a take charge, get r done kind of guy. Pepe’s workers all seem to really work together with ease to get the job done.
Damn Alex, judging from that video and camera angle that was dangerous. Those cars are right up on you in one clip after you moved to open that one lane. Be careful, you never know when one of those drivers gets distracted by a text, call, etc. and god forbid hits you. Great job as usual. Your experience shows. 👍. Have now started to expect your breakdown Josh. Know you’ve probably got a lot of other responsibilities. Looking forward to the next vid.

Hola everyone, I’ve gone back and watched a ton of old videos. I bought a brand new KW in 1978 when I was 20. This is why I love all your videos. Do you think the fifth wheel was already damaged and that’s why it dropped. He must not have tugged on it? Do you know how far he drove before this dropped. He knew something was happening to get that far off the road. Maybe caught on rear crossmember? I didn’t notice if it was bent? Maybe the trailer was too high and the king pin was on top of the lock? Still I don’t see how that would go this far and again no tug? This was an interesting one. Thanks for all the hard work u all do. Ps why wasn’t the chippy making the idiot move over. A car and truck were both over the line. 😮🤯 aloha
Should have disqualified the fifth wheel immediately upon the first drop in which it could not be determined the exact fault or the fifth was found to be bad, however a fifth wheel failure is very rare if the first hook is properly confirmed. I work with a major carrier, if a driver drops a trailer it is an automatic disqualification of that driver. That is how rare equipment failures are...
Headsets are legal, provided they only cover one ear. The Pepe's drivers use headsets that cover both ears when they're working on towing - both for ear protection and communication.

Your 35 ton driver that hook that trailer at such an angle with the chain all the weight will be pulling on on those pins in the cross bar or open the hooks on the receiver, should've gone farther back especially if was loaded.
Do you Think the fifth wheel was locked when he left and then it broke or was it a case of him not checking to make sure it was locked before leaving what do you think?
It may have already been attached to the tractor at his place of work for him to drive away. Either way he should have checked before he drove away. Never just take someone's word that everything is all good.

Why didn't the wrecker just take the trailer. As a truck drive for a large LTL, we were not allowed to use the truck or trailer if they came unhooked till there were inspected, and the shop said the truck and trailer were ok, and if there was nothing wrong then the driver got a unpaid week of vacation LOL.
This is clearly the driver's fault. He didn't confirm the fifth wheel was locked on the king pin. He needs to be retrained and retested to verify he fully understands how to line up, connect and confirm he is properly latched to his trailers
