I got into Musica Brasileira in 2008, when jazz vocalist Karrin Allyson released "Imagina," all Brazilian music. I loved it, and loaned it to a Brazilian woman coworker. She in turn gave me ripped CDs of REAL Brazilian musaic, ands I was totally hooked with its beauty, intensity, melodies, harmonies, rhythms, instrumentation. I went on to do Brazilian music shows on FM stations at Carnegie Mellon U and West Virginia U. I now have about 2,000 Brazilian CDs & play the music on a Takamine acoustic. Once you discover it, Musica Brasilaeira becomes the soundtrack of your life.

Good morning/afternoon/evening my friend, I thought I was going to get an opportunity to urge you to get some early 60s Jorge Ben and Elis Regina but m, as usual, it appears that you have it covered. Maybe a video on classic era (60s and early to mid 70s salsa) if you have any? Wonderful percussionists in abundance including Ray Barretto. Thanks for your work, it’s appreciated.

My favorite record is Gilberto Gil (1968) played with Os Mutantes. In 60s, conservatives musicians or not were against the eletric guitar in brazilan music, there were even marches! But, it was inevitable, this instrument came and stay, and we love it! Tropicália was very important in music and cinema, Martin Scorcesse, Bong Hoo Jo (Parasite director) and Jean-luc Godard loves Glauber Rocha (maybe the most famous Brazilian director). I love It, i love Tropicália era.

One of my FAVORITE local finds( at Dimple Books and Records) was spotting the Luiz Bonfa & Maria Toledo ‎- Braziliana album on L.p. I originally left it behind and then couldn't find It! I eventually found it again and snatched it right up. Come to find out it's a Colombian pressing on the Fonoton label under Phillips. It says it's mono but it's definitely stereo and plays pretty dang quiet. Maria has such a beautiful voice...
I think I'll have a Brazil Friday night with the Lps I have!!!

beautiful stuff - my intro, like a lot of others in the sixties, was when my sister brought home some mendes records from college. i especially loved the stuff they did that weren't covers of US pop tunes. after that i fell completely in love with airto - and from there hermeto and nascimiento, the fatturuso brothers and their fabulous band opa, elis, jobim, baden powell, jorge ben, veloso, gilberto gil, gismonti, etc etc etc. life long love affair that never ceases to amaze. some of my more recent faves are daude, arto lindsay and zuco 103. if you want another modern take - absolutely wonderful take - on brazilian music, pick up gretchen parlato's latest "flor".

I remember on one of getz early bossa albums the drummer had no concept
of how to play a bossa and it really stood out. It took me a while to be able
to learn this kind of beat and longer to swing with it.

I have not read through the comments to see if they are mentioned but for those just getting involved with Bossa Nova music there is Astrud Gilberto as well as Walter Wanderley. Another album I found is titled " The Girls From Bahai " on WB Records - not too difficult to find online I imagine. I started to collect Brazilian / South American music in the last few years and have a long way to go admittedly. Your collection and the artists showcased will not doubt allow many to enjoy this genre more fully.
Besides Sergio Mendes / Brasil 66 there are any number of interesting spin off albums created during the the time that Bossa Nova became very popular in North America. Charlie Byrd being just one example amount many. Frank Sinatra's collaboration with Antonio Carlos Jobim is another result of it's popularity. It seems that finding these gems , at least locally where I live , is difficult. Recently I purchased around a dozen albums by Astrud Gilberto, Jobim / Getz and Luis Bonfa in like new condition which, for me, was a rare chance. I am just glad I was able to buy them from the daughter of the man that kept them in like new condition all these years but due to older age was no longer able to enjoy listening to them.
She was glad to know they would be looked after and continue to provide further enjoyment. It amazes me how little I tend to find at used record stores but I will continue to search. Those of us who truly appreciate this colourful music are thankful that you took the time to make known all of that talent waiting to be discovered.

The entry point for me was through Charlie Byrd who I think I discovered while browsing CDs in Tower Records and then branching off from there. One of my reference albums is “The Bossa Nova Years” by Charlie Byrd and Ken Peplowski.

I have just started collecting bossa Nova lps after I bought the soul jazz records comps. What a wonderful music. I hear its the last time jazz was popular to the general public.
I think I like the earlier records with less string and brass arrangements. Been buying Elenco and Phillips mainly. I have noticed a lack of collectors resource guides. Do you know any resources off hand that would help guide me in collecting bossa Nova records? Thanks for this great video. Cheers from Seattle.
