London-based Producer and selector Gerah share some records he brought back from his recent trip to Brazil. The selection features music only made in Bahia, state where our guest has a special connection and feel at home walking in the historic cities from the first state of Brazil.
After moving to London in 2019, Gerah cemented his place as one of the most indispensable members of Brazil's music world by starting dublab Brazil (the Brazilian branch of LA's favorite community radio station). With roots in Brazilian rhythms, jazz, hip-hop, and Balearic club grooves, the DJ has begun making a significant impact on London's global-music scene too, performing at places like Spiritland, Supermax, Brilliant Corners and Nigh Tales Loft. In his production, he mixes native rhythms with electronic machines and organic percussion. As a result, Gerah consistently shows off some of Brazil's lesser-known, unrecognized musical gems.
“These records were on my Wishlist for a while and I’m happy for having found those on my recent trip to Brazil. I spent 3 weeks doing a road trip in Bahia, from Salvador to Ponta do Corumbau traveling around by Bus, Buggy, Boats, Horse, and digging in local record stores, antique shops and houses. Big shout to Eriton Dourado for opening his house to me and sharing amazing independent records from Bahia. From This selection I would like to Highlight the beautiful voice of Rosa Emilia singing “Depois Que o Ilê Passar”, the incredible Lazzo with the classic “Abolição” and Cida Lobo interpreting “Olhos Negros” written by Lula Queiroga.”

Well, Bahia music certainly is.
Brazilian is very very Brazilian music "bro", plus a large country with roots from many places you know? This is only Bahia strong African roots, as well Portuguese and amazonians nations. Never that simple.

@@ginogino3551 nah bro, not just Bahia. Basically every genre from the Americas. They are all influenced by the same root, which is Africa. Jazz, blues, martinica, merengue, samba de roda, maracatu, jongo, even tango, to name just a few, are national musical representations because they all share the same structural element that fused with the various nuances of colonization (and the indigenous people to some extent). Sure there’s the racial mix, but as you said it’s not that simple. I think saying Brazilian or any Latin American music is just a “mix” is falling in a very naive and stereotypical argument, precisely because the State, after the end of the slave trade, conducted a systematic effort to whiten musical practices in order to promote the European culture, specially in more urban centers. What happened then was the black population struggling to adapt to this process, assuming the western music referential in order to survive. The great Pixinguinha, Joaquim Callado and Chiquinha Gonzaga, cornerstones of Brazilian music, are all examples of that same process. By the way, my first comment is not even “mine”, check out Letieres Leite.
