You're not the first reactors to be surprised that the other crew just left as soon as he drew a gun, but I'm really surprised by your surprise. Of course they did. Yes, there were 4-5 of them, armed, and they could easily have taken Mal - but he had the draw on them so they couldn't take him before he had shot at least one, possibly two of them. And why would each of them be risking their lives for that? They're not defending anything, not in a fight to the death, they can just walk away losing only that catalyzer part. So it's either lose a catalyzer and walk away all intact, or gain Serenity but with a 20-40% chance of dying. Serenity's routinely talked about as a piece of junk by other crews, so I think it's reasonable that they wouldn't think it was worth risking their lives in order to steal it. Not to mention Mal's gun was trained on their captain, so assuming he's making the decision his personal odds are even worse.

Plus... why get into a gunfight? Mal would likely die of his gunshot wound sooner or later. They can just retreat and wait.

Something I really appreciate about this episode: the way Mal deals differently with different crew members:

‘It’s a common trope in film for one man with a gun to outmatch many.”
Well, it’s less a trope and more just reality.. they had numbers, and got the first shot in, but they made the mistake of turning their back on him. Some of them could have overpowered him, but they know that the first person to make a move is likely going to take a bullet. More often than not, most criminals are looking for an easy target, not armed resistance and getting shot.

My take on Wash and Zoe is Wash's attitude was because he was into Zoe and was putting on a front to impress her, and Zoe maybe didn't like it so much, but mostly she just hated the mustache.
There is a bit of background that I think explains Inara's attitude, but even though it's never actually discussed in the series or movie (it was something that got confirmed by Morena Baccarin in a panel at a convention after Serenity had already released)... I'll hold off on talking about it for now

Come on guys, of *course* that pirate crew is going to leave, because Mal has a gun trained right on their captain. If bullets start to fly, there's no way Mal can survive, but also Mal will most certainly kill their captain first. So their captain, valuing his own life makes sure nobody shoots at Mal and do as he says.

I was under the impression that Serenity (the movie) was the only time they had a full Serenity (the ship) interior set. They may have had all of the rooms built at the same time in the same building, but they were disconnected and not located in proper relation to each other. The first long take in the movie was specifically to show off the fact that they finally had a single set for the entire ship interior.

The genius of how they made sure the time jumps weren't "jarring" is the clever use of different color schemes for the environment.
Dark, foreboding blue for the present. Bright yellow for the past. (regular for the "future"/ present)
We got how they met Simon, River & Book (and Mal/ Joe to a lesser degree) in the Pilot episode. Here we get everyone else.
Oh, and on the confrontation with the salvagers? They left him alone because they were SURE he was unarmed! (which he was) They just didn't know there was a holstered gun within arm's reach of where he fell.
Also, they left because Mal (wisely) KEPT his gun trained on the LEADER! A group like this would ONLY follow a STRONG leader. A leader that would SEVERELY PUNISH disobedience. So, Mal made it clear to him that IF he gave the order to attack (& overwhelm) him, the leader would be certain to die! (And he didn't want THAT, so he cooperated.)
And yes, Guns are the GREAT EQUALIZER! (Which is why the 2nd Amendment is SO very important.) That is why I support it so much & wish EVERY woman carried a gun! (to help 'even the odds' if/ when "bad things" happen to them.)

Being from a country that restricted our gun laws after a mass shooting (something y'all don't seem to be capable of), I gotta admit I don't see how arming everyone makes things SAFER. Now everyone has the potential to kill people easily. Isn't that the opposite of what you want? I much prefer living in a country where I don't have to worry that my fellow citizens could easily start letting bullets fly...

Kaylee has mentioned a part in the past, I'm not sure which one. If it was compression coil then the continuity didn't come through. This part was the catalyzer, and Mal even corrected the other ship when they used the term compression coil.
Also, the thing with Jayne, he didn't turn at the first mention of money. Mal also talked about everyone having their own bunk. I believe Jayne's turn wasn't solely about a better deal or money, but the promise of being treated like valued family rather than just a poorly-paid employee.

My understanding (which could be wrong) is that the catalyzer is a part of the compression coil, and Mal wasn't so much correcting as making it more precise. Like as an analogy, if you have engine trouble and when someone says your engine is broken, you say "the spark plug".

"Out of Gas": Simon's birthday coincides with the failure of a part that Kaylee has been bugging Mal about since the beginning. The crew is divided up to fit the shuttles, while Mal waits for an answer to their distress call. Three timelines are color coded, with crew background segments in orange, and the recent past in blue. Wash had a mustache, Kaylee was "on her back," and Jayne was offered a better deal. A ship drops by...to take "Serenity," but is persuaded to leave the much-needed "nothing" part. Mal doesn't push the recall button, but the crew is back. The gas in question is Oxygen.

I assume Jayne had the guy he shot in his peripheral vision, or maybe saw him drop the gun.
If Mal had started shooting, one of them would likely have shot him again before he could have killed them all. As far as him being outnumbered, that's why he targeted the guy in charge, bringing into play the old, "I may die, but I guarantee you'll go with me."

The thing about the crew that tried to take the ship, is that they may or may not be genuine bad guys, they just saw an easy opportunity and took it, but it wasn't something worth losing even one of their lives. (I mean of course they are 'bad guys' they were willing to kill one guy for a ship, although it's possible he didn't kill Mal right away simply because his plan was to take the ship, and then just drop an injured Mal off at the next stop or something like that. )
They are scared of a single gun, simply because even though they would win in that fight, there is a very high chance that one of their friends would die, and the reward, is probably not worth it. When you factor in risk, rewards and prior expectations before they received the signal. If they never received the sos, their day would have been exactly as profitable.(minus one compression catalyzer)

I will say, I do think you (or maybe it's me) misinterpreted Inara's first appearance with Mal. My interpretation of that scene is that she doesn't have time for petty bullshit negotiation when she already knows the outcome, and knows exactly what Mal is willing to do to get that to happen and why. She spends all her working hours doing a dance of language with her clients(along with other things) that when it comes to the business side, she's already sized Mal up as a straight to the point guy, and figures this is the best way to handle the negotiations, which was always going to end up where it did.
I think that is part of the reason she's attracted to Mal. Not that he has a noble heart, not that he's usually on the side of good(in the end) it's that he's the counter to her world of bullshitting around the bush. (to clumsily combine a couple of metaphors) He's a sledgehammer, she's a scapel. She sums up that is who he is in this scene (and later realizes her summation was not accurate -- as she says at some point to the preacher, that he's still a mystery and so few men are)

Sure Mal couldn't kill all them but would you risk you being the one that gets killed? It's doubtful they've got a genius doctor to patch them up either so it's not worth risking your life for the ship especially when the ship isn't worth that much.

Why did Zoe order the shuttle to come back? It makes no sense and I'm shocked everyone just accepts this.
Mal's plan was a good one and anything else reduces their chances of survival so why did Zoe decide to take the shuttle back to the Serenity?

It wasn't just Wash that Zoe took an instant dislike to. It's also Serenity.

Weird reaction to the introduction to Inara. She's negotiating a business deal with a man she doesn't know who barely disguises his contempt for her. How friendly do you expect her to be?

Please do not inject adrenaline into your own heart it will kill you. Doctors do it when the person’s heart has stopped in order to shock it back into pumping.

Just sn observation, but you guys miss a lot of dialog by talking while the characters are talking.
