WELL!!! Thats super helpful. Wish I had watched this when I was doing my siding!! :) BTW, for a roofer, you seem to know a lot about a bit of everything. Where did you get all this knowledge ? Your not that old!!!
Wait til you see these next few weeks worth of videos lol and thanks for the compliment man. I just showed up, stayed positive and tried to learn it all. I was fortunate to work with a guy that knew everything on every job we were at. He was a framer by trade, but kicked out for DUI's but I learned a lot of framing, siding soffit n fascia, gutters, demo, window wraps, windows, doors, trim, flooring and prolly a handful of other stuff too. I just wanted to be the guy that had all of the answers like he did and sort of grew into that from being VERY consistent. I have never no called no showed. And that's rare out by me lol
Wow by far the best explanation on how to make the angles. Other videos uses level and square and messaureing tapes. This is so much easier. I cant believe i didnt think to do it this way
As a GC apprentice I am doing a side job of siding a shed. And I was having a dumb momemnt and couldn’t remember how to do my gablie siding. You just helped me out so much. And I really appreciate it. You earned a follow
I had a lapsiding job last Tuesday, we get to the gable and my dumbass lead says, "I'm gonna have to pythagorean theorem this shit" and all I could do was laugh at him. I honestly just find out my roof pitch and do long cuts from there but this method looks way easier. Definitely gonna give it a shot!
Jobs looking good, we just picked up a huge fascia and soffit job but have too complete a few roofing jobs b4 we start, I almost cut my thumb off using one of those grinders, maybe I should of put the guard on lol
Good video and technique. I'm gonna be doing a single-wide trailer in vinyl here in a week or two, and there will be some weird angles around the corners up to the roofline. This should work great.
Hey Veteran I have a 4 12 roof, I have 2 gable vents on both ends that are triangular. I can't find a triangle vent for vinyle . The square ones I have found are bigger of course. If I use a sq. one can I just drill some holes underneath the current triangle vent that would be covered by the new sq vent? Or should I cut out more material in the current siding / plywood ? If I cut out more should the insulation be removed from all of tht area ? My concern with the bigger sq. vent is will water perhaps blow in the new vent since it is going to be a lot lower that the existing vent? Hope this makes sense.
I’ve used that same way for the Lp and Hardie siding. Pretty cool to see it work for vinyl. Never worked with vinyl my boss I learned from always passed those jobs. Always said we use quality products not garbage. From your vids though looks like you can fly just siding vinyl.
Yes sir thanks for the comment! but yea every job is different, some are quick, I've tore down and installed 22 sq in a day with 3 others but that's far from typical lol I've also installed hardie board and LP. not a fan of hardie, takes too long, but when the day comes I'll probably LP my own house. What a lot of guys don't get is that vinyl isn't a bad product. I Like it and know it holds well when installed correctly and the majority of homeowners, like 75+% of people in my area, Would prefer to put vinyl on because its in their budget and lasts for what you pay for it.
Yeah hardie is a b word to work with. Lol i do agree with lp to me it’s the best in the biz. I use that template method and when I get to using just one piece up the gable I just use my template and a speed square to get all my measurements. Again great vids man.
@@GrazingBull thanks. When you get down to "less than" a full piece length on those gables you know the trick to get your next number right? Before you install it?
What a time saver it is to have a good pattern whether you work alone or on a team. Team rules help get the job done right. Do you have rules on tool storage and maintenance?
@@NWIVeteranConstruction I learned a lot from you already. I just jumped into full time contracting and you're the only one who had a quick and easy way to get the gable angles
Zach, can you demonstrate a how to install the siding when the bottom 4 rows are missing down to the very bottom. I’m afraid if I try to replace starting from the bottom and come up, I won’t have the proper distance above to lock in and properly meet the the final strip because small distances times several can add up. Is there a way to install and work downward. I had a fire on the back of the house, and the bottom 10 feet melted in one corner downward to the ground where the fire started. Thank in advance.
You have to make sure you have the exact same same siding, and only put nails IN THE OLD NAIL HOLES. That will ensure they line up. I actually have a recent video about changing a piece. Might help
You need to invest in some saw horses man, working off of the ground, bending over, squatting everyday. Takes a toll on the body after awhile. I'm sure you have saw horses but time to make a cutting table. Good videos. Keep them coming.
Also, I enjoy how you're teaching this kids everything you know. You're a great trainer, hard to find people that critique little things like you do. Once again, good job.
I’m currently putting j channel around round windows heat gun sucks destroys the vinyl notching the back don’t do shit it buckles in the front any tip or trick for this?
i have the greatest!!!!! j channel video. period. its actually one of my favorite videos of mine and j channel is one of my favorite things to do. check it out. very easy to find in a search or on my channel videos in my siding playlist
Same exact thing. Hook into your gecko clips, slide over and use another piece to trace. or you can do a rake angle if I'm not mistaken, using either a speed square or a framing square. It won't be the easy way on the square though. And if its not new construction the angles won't always be perfect anyway so finding a good way to trace your angle is safer than a rake angle on a square
All the way up. Unless your roof pitch changes but that is obvious. Keep your pattern and use only that piece as a pattern. Don't use your cut offs as a pattern or it will eventually not work anymore.
@@NWIVeteranConstruction also make sure to keep your siding level. If you loose it then eventually it will come out of j channel. And if I'm doing the gable with someone else then I cut a panel and before I give it to other guy to put it on i measure lock to know the size of next panel and while coworker is hammering first panel I'm already cutting the next one.
Yea you can use it backwards. Just will sit a little awkwardly. I had a guy try to do that for the same reason, didn't work out well so my advice would be to do it this way
I could have. It's a 12/12 which equals 45 degrees and my saw is big enough to do it. However, The reason I didn't, is because that would not have worked on your average job where you're dealing with 8/12 and under (in my area) so, because not all angles are made the same and the majority of them need a grinder. I demonstrated it in a way that works in all situations.
I prefer the grinder personally but I use a chop saw with a backwards blade once in awhile. But usually just for straight cuts in between windows. Like When you Gatta cut like 6 pieces @ 125 or whatever. You can Get through em all in 1 cut. So fast.
For vinyl? I would never do it different than this if you want my honest opinion. I have another video though I'm pretty sure I detailed that a little bit where I was matching siding up above a gable
I hate it on my house. It creaks in the wind, gets holes and cracks from lawn mowers and stuff easily, and is an insect and wasp nest magnet. I took down some of it to work on my roof and the whole corner post was filled with wasps nests. The bottom of each siding piece was full of dead bugs too.

Just figure out the pitch and then anyone with a speed square can cut the material. They won’t need to look for a “pattern”. Saves time, and time saves money. Still like all your videos. Keep passing on the info for the newcomers.
Well. Not every pitch is built exact. Or settles exact when put up. Also. You're gonna end up using a pattern anyway coz nobody is gonna bust a speed or framing sq every time. So why not just get one good one for both sides. Exact to the angle because it was traced... and go on about the day using one pattern

If the Sun is casting a shadow of the roofline on the wall, I guarantee if you mark it you will be real close. LOL
Haha probably depends on the angle of the sun, not a bad idea though! I actually got a pretty sweet invention in the works too help find this angle
Learning to use a square and a siding table is handy. Way faster than a grinder and chop saw. Been siding forever
