Pet Scan Results and Thoughts on Starting Proton Radiation Therapy Cancer Diary

- We had our first Pet Scan and the results are looking positive! The tumor is shrinking. There are still some spots where it is being stubborn though, especially behind my eye, which is what has made things so tricky. We will be starting proton radiation therapy soon to try to take care of what is left, but it comes with risks including vision loss. This cancer diary is my thoughts on the results and our treatment moving forward for my nasal squamous cell carcinoma.
Our Proton Radiation Therapy is at Orlando Health Cancer Institute under Dr. Rafael Manon and we really like him. Chemo is at Advent Health.

Yay! Great news Melanie! I’m overjoyed for you. I loved hearing the excitement in your voice and seeing the tears of joy about Christmas and the upcoming camping trip with your precious little one. It’s so important to have little things to look forward to. YOU WILL do all the things with her! I feel it in my bones. I know that the timing seems terrible to be diagnosed with this condition while you have a newborn but I believe with all my heart that the timing was perfect because she is your strength, your hope, your resilience and perseverance…and you are her warrior Mama. ❤ Happy thanksgiving and Christmas and as always, enjoy the newborn stretches! 😍

Heavenly Father, thank you for shrinking this tumor. Please allow this tumor to disappear as fast as possible. Please give Melanie, a peaceful heart and soul. She sounds so scared, as we all would be, give her strength, peace, love, guidance, security that only You can provide. She deserves nothing but peace and joy during this time with her new precious baby. I pray Lord for this burden to be lifted off of her heart. Amen. Melanie, I will pray for you every day. I feel like I feel your soul. I don't know you, but I wish I could help. God is our ultimate healer and He has you in His hands. You WILL beat this. I'm sitting here in the cancer center with my chemo infusion going and a matching bald head. It's sucks.

I have 6 kids under the roof. The emotional roller coaster with cancer sucks.
I don't know what else to say but those of us that have cancer with young kids, we understand. We get it! We all have the same fears and anxiety that hits us also. 😊
I daily lean on God to take fear of the unknown away from me and leave it at the cross.
God has been The only thing that keeps me from spinning downward with depression, anxiety and fear. I don't want to make any fear based decisions. Fear based decisioms do not come from God.
I was blind sided by my cancer, but God wasnt. He is here wiith me every step of the way😊

It's truly something no one can understand unless they have walked it and I am so sorry it's a path you have to go down too, but you are right, God knew even when we didn't and He is here through all of the hard. You've got this! I know how scared you are, but never underestimate the power of your will and spirit to be there for your baby girl! My children were late teens and early 20's when i was diagnosed with cancer. They told me to get my affairs in order because they only gave me a 20% chance of surviving the surgery and less long term. I am still here and doing fine!❤ That was 13 years ago! I still go for just an ultrasound every year and MRI every two years now. You are in my thoughts and prayers...

Wow! That's amazing and I'm so happy for you and your family ❤ Doctors are amazing and we need them but, they don't know everything especially how strong the human spirit is! I'm so thankful for you sharing your awesome experience with Melanie and everyone else who needed to hear your story! You sound like a very strong and amazing person! Best wishes aways..❤ I just lost my father July 2nd and because he was a chronic alcoholic he didn't even feel that something was horribly wrong 😢 Last year when we had that extreme cold weather he got outside and was lost and had to have both feet amputated 😢 I moved him in with me and for almost a year we got him sober and he was eating and doing well, his doctor was so happy, he got what she thought was a UTI but after blood and urine test they wanted a C-scan, they came back and said he was actively dying and was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and my Dad passed away 8 hours later 😢 I am still in shock because he didn't look sick and he had no symptoms or pain! It had spread absolutely EVERYWHERE..my heart is forever broken, I finally got him sober and I lost him 😢 I'm so confused and the guilt eats me up that I didn't see any symptoms and I took him to all his check-ups?? I wish I could grieve but I can't..I feel only anger, guilt and confusion..😢 Take care xx hydie ❤

I had a CT scan with contrast to rule out blood clots in my lungs. All clear. Stay strong my Warrior sister. Together, we got this. Chin up! 💞

I can tell it's shrinking by how your voice sounds. If that makes sense. It doesn't sound like it's pressing on your sinus cavity like it was. I'm so happy it's shrinking!!

Wonderful news, Melanie. Your proton radiation physician sounds like a dream come true. Faith in your provider is an absolute necessity. Proton radiation is much more targeted radiation just as he explained. He has to tell you the possible side effects, but that does not mean they are going to occur.
It is ok for both you and mom to cry. You were crying happy tears. Here is hope that you have a Happy Thanksgiving. This is something we can all be grateful for. Many blessings and hugs coming your way. Kiss baby girl for us.

Melanie, you are doing GREAT! That's such wonderful news that the tumor has shrunk!! My aunt had head & neck cancer 2 yrs ago, with a tumor in her jaw. She had chemo and Proton Therapy at the treatment center in Knoxville, TN. It wasn't easy, and she lost alot of jaw bone, but she's doing great now, cancer-free. I'm sure the Proton Therapy will make a difference in your healing. God is with you each step of the way, and He WILL heal you. I'm a believer and I'm praying for you. Try not to worry and think about things too much (coming from Ms. Anxiety.) I know easier said than done! Meditate on the Psalms. The Lord's got you! Be anxious for nothing; read Psalm 91; Trust in the Lord with all your heart...❤ everything's going to be okay! You are so loved! 💙🙏💙

I lost my left eye due to giant cell arteritis. It s an autoimmune disease where my immune system attacks the arteries and optic nerve. I have no light on my left eye it's just black. Drs say I will eventually go black in my right eye. So a life with no light. I know what you are going through.you are alive NOW. I have my right eye NOW. Be happy and live in the now. NOW is the key to keep from going crazy. I'm here with ya.

That is some wonderful news regarding the shrinkage of the tumor. A break from chemo will give your body a chance to heal. You are also blessed with a proton therapy centre so close to you. I can completely understand why you feel discouraged sometimes; it can be overwhelming at the best of times. You are in good hands and we're all praying for you. Bald is beautiful. Having a doctor that you trust and who genuinely has you and your best treatment on queue, is so wonderful. My experience was a heart attack and I was blessed to have the absolutely best and most personable doctor. What a blessing that you have had significant shrinkage in the tumor. That's wonderful news. I'm so glad your baby girl is still tiny so you can complete everything you need to do, and she won't ever remember any part of it. Except maybe in pictures. Thank you so much for your videos, your information has been very helpful for me, as i have cancer just under my eye and bridge of my nose. I had targeted radiation to the corner of my eye and nose. It caused a 3rd degree burn and for a while i was hopeful that it had worked but i now feel a growth there again but due to my high doctors bills with the cancer clinic they wont see me any longer and as i am living on disability it doesnt look like ill be getting anymore treatment. So i am so happy you are doing these videos theyrr helping me understand more of why it hurts and what well i would've been expecting. Stay strong and thank you again❤
