Hey Tom - cool video! Any idea if you can select compound clips for multicam editing? Create multicam clip is greyed out for me when I have one selected.. any idea of a workaround? tx
Hey Brendan! I don't think you can create multicam clips with compound clips since the compound clips still contain the original clips that were merged. You could export a compound clip and then import that file to use as a multicam clip.
6:30 THANK YOU FOR THE TIP! Editing a music video using Multicam editing for the first time but couldn't figure out where the other angles are located. 🤯😅
This is such a great tutorial - I've been wanting to find this feature for ages and you've taken me through it step by step - perfect! Thanks so much Tom!
This is amazing. I am self taught and jumped real fast into multi-angle shots. I would spend SIGNIFICANT amounts of time nudging several video clip angles to sync up my clips to main audio, and even when it “sounded” right to my ear, I’d find problems. And all this before I could start making cuts between angles. With each angle clip stacked, I’m constantly turning them off and on, or even temporarily changing transparencies, before I decided where to make a cut to switch angles. Extremely tedious and time consuming, as you can imagine. A labor of love, of course, but this will make my time lines sooooo much cleaner and easier to sync and edit between angles than I ever imagined. You have just shaved hours and hours off my multi-angle projects. Bless you, sir!
One year to the day that you made this, and I had created a vid with two cameras. Believe it or not... I didn't understand about Multicam. I was going to just place each clip in the timeline, and then manually cut them (I'm a relative beginner). I was doing that when I noticed that the audio was not synced. I did a search to find out how to sync the audio... by following links about syncing, I fell upon this video of Multicam and realized that Multicam-ing is actually what I should be doing. Using the info from this video has opened up my [editing] world, in terms of what I realize I can do now with my project. This is super easier than what I was about to do with the edit, serves my purpose better, and will save me loads of time. I subscribed. Let's see what else you've got... :P
Great introduction to this amazing feature. Literally my first session on any editing software for over 15 years, and boy...! Lots has changed but got the swing of it quick thanks to Multicam and you Tom. Thanks so much.
oooooh your TIPS in this Tutorial = A God-Send!!! I could not for the life of me figure out how to get the ANGLES to appear in order to easily cut from one camera angle to the other -- and something you showed me in this extremely helpful video = SAVED my night!!! I've literally watched 1/2 dozen of others on editing multi-cam shots with FCPX -- but THIS was the saving Grace! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANNNNK YOU!!!!! Fan for LIFE! :D
This is by far the best Multicam tutorial, just one thing missed out. the way to pick the audio channel you want to have throughout the video , in your primary timeline, right click the clip and change the active audio angel
Helped me out immensely man thank you! I just switched from Premiere on my Mac to Final Cut during a multicam shoot id done with 5 angles and over 400GB in clips and proxies! My computer was failing to move the mouse fast enough, whereas Final Cut has been a breeze! Thanks again!
Awesome tutorial man, I love how simple you break it down to be and easy to follow. I'm starting to edit 2 angles for my drumming videos and this is perfect! FCPX takes a lot of time out of the editing by aligning all the clips and audio!
What a great video! Tom, you are a master at explaining how to use MultiCam in Final Cut Pro. This is the first video of yours I've watched. SUBSCRIBED
ya just blew my mind... i was looking at editing go pro footage with canon footage and found this... my eyes have been opened! I'm saving this for later... thank you...
Thank you so much! I filmed my friend's TEDx talk and had no idea what I was getting into with multicam. :) I'll try not to induce too much panic amongst the viewers.
I've found that multicam works pretty similarly across both apps, which is awesome. I actually learned how to do this from watching a Premiere tutorial and trying to transfer the concepts.
it created a new file that had the multicam icon but it wasn't multicam, the new file was just all four videos edited together back to back. What did I do wrong?
The Enthusiasm Project it requires me to name each angle and each camera for each source file before I make the multi camera file. Once I did that it worked perfectly.
I keep coming back to this. This is such a helpful video! Although your video has done enough to at least point me the way, I hope someday you do another Multicam editing on FCPX with at least 2 different audio. That'd be super helpful!
Thanks -- just watched this (twice) and it was a huge help to me (a novice with Final Cut Pro) as I try to edit a motovlog with 2 gopros. Big thumbs up, and subscribed.
3rd video I watch on Multicam and the first I understand! Thanks for making it simple! This is awesome! I'll be creating some awesome interviews in the very near future:-)
I'm so glad to hear that the video was helpful! The multicam feature is super helpful. Plus there's just something realyl satisfying about switching between the shots like you're directing a tv show 😁
Thanks so much!! This video is very very helpful for my situation. I just successfully made my multicam editing in my CFX work. It's perfect now. Thanks again!
There is also a window on the right where if you later change your mind about a cut, your options show. Do you recall how to bring that window forward? Thank you.
@@tombuck Thanks. Not the same inspector you showed. It is a place you can toggle the angle listed by words, not clips. Let's say you have finished a project. But your client asked to change a view. You used to be able to click the clip and look right and toggle to another view. You could also select the audio tracks and could use more than one. For example, when I shoot live concerts, I want the applause from the house added to the audio file from the sound board. Bummer I forgot how to get that window. Maybe they stopped it. If I find out, I will let you know. Nice Multicam shoot you did! Fun to have great angles.
@@tombuck Thank you! And a third way I just found. Right-click on the clip you want to change, and it has the video and audio choices right there. Thanks for playing Watson to my Sherlock.
Now that you are using ATEM Mini would you ever consider doing a multicam video composition as you have done here. In other words do you now consider multicam nearly obsolete (or at least in terms of your production abilities) and would mostly be using the ATEM Mini instead. Thanks for doing and sharing your work. Your being a teacher really comes all you do. Very helpful.
Thanks for the kind words! I still use both techniques- I figure all tools have their place. The ATEM is terrific if you or someone else is available to switch the angles, but multicam like this is great if you're a one person crew and aren't able to switch angles while filming. 👍
@@tombuck Tom do you use Compressor with FCPX. If you do, would you recommend getting it? If you do not, do you have an opinion on using it given your experience with FCPX?
Very useful. Just what I needed, thanks! Are you able to colour grade each clip separately to match them? And if you record your audio as a separate file, can it be added as a clip or will it need to be synchronised with one of the video clips first? Thanks again!
This is so cool. I'm currently using Final Cut Pro Trial and I would always use the vid from each individual camera and then split the frames and match the audio, but this way is much faster and easier. Too bad I only have 14 more days with the Trial and I can't afford to buy Final Cut Pro, but hopefully one day I'll be able to and I'll enjoy it more.
how do you make the audio that I split stereo to make it mono? When I do this normally i can just change it from stereo to mono but in multicam, this option is gone.
Great video! Thank you. Quick question. I want to do a multi cam video of my band in a recording studio where the audio will be from the studio mix and not the cameras. Is that still easy to sync up all the different videos with the new audio track?
If the final mix you're using as the audio source is "live" (meaning it's the audio that was recorded at the same time the cameras were rolling), then yes, it should sync up fine. If it's a more edited/polished final mix that you're looking to combine with footage of each band member playing, then you'll probably just have to do it the old school way of syncing each clip/cut manually. Good luck!
The Enthusiasm Project Thats kinda what I thought. I’m just getting started with all this and trying to figure it out. Your video was very helpful. Thanks man!
Oh thanks- I shoot with three but mostly two and gosh it’s overwhelming. I knew the program could do it but it but never got around to figuring it out.
I knew I was missing something. I just did my first multicam edit in Final Cut Pro, but I forgot about the Angles View at the top, and so I wound up editing the hard way..by right clicking on the clip and choosing the view from their each time. I guess I should have rewatched this episode...lol
Tom you saved me days, thanks a lot! One question. I typically record audio externally with Zoom H6 / boom mic and then sync on PluralEyes and import the xml to FCP. In your video you import the videos...is it possible to work with the xmls in the same way? For me it's much easier to sync in PluralEyes before and work with the xml directly converted as a project. Hope it was a bit clear and thanks again, loved this video and super helpful!
Hi, i tried doing multicam editing on fcp on my computer. However, at 6:44, instead of all my selected 6 videos appearing at all 6 angles, i only see 2 of them, while the other 4 are blank screens with no audio. i have checked the original 4 videos and they are perfectly alright. Please help me thankss. And nice video btw i am trying fcp for the 1st time :)
Things can sometimes go wonky for a number of reasons. My first step is usually to start from scratch to see if that helps. Otherwise, you might have to use the clip that did work and manually add the others, which isn’t as simple but it does work. It’s always a good idea to be sure that each camera is recording a loud audio signal. If possible, you can also use a tiemecode to sync clips, but not every camera has the ability to produce time code.
Thank you so much for this very helpful Vid. My problem is when I switch to Camera B the audio also switches to that camera (which is just ambient noise on my motorcycle). How do I keep the audio from switching?

Hope it was a bit clear and thanks again, loved this video and super helpful!
Yes, that should work- but you can also select an audio and video file together in Final Cut, right click, and sync just those two.
@@tombuck cool, thank you! :)
Incredible video. I've just purchased FCP. I hope it'll help grow our show. Keep up the great work. Peace
Mulitcam is a real timesaver! I hope it helps you guys out 👍
God BLESS you for this! I just saved TONS of time and stress by switching to this video!!!
I’m so happy to hear that! Good luck!
After you've created a multicam clip, you should be able to open the Inspector and select/deselect audio for each source.
Your videos are very helpful. Thank you.
I’m glad you think so, thank you!
Great info. I’m going to be a legend with this info.
Good luck! 👍
