    southernskeptic...
If the Bible were actually inspired by God, it would look very different from the book so many Christians revere.
You would think anything written by or inspired by the most powerful being ever would be equally as amazing. But it's not.
The blogger Southern Skeptic did an excellent job of explaining why -- you can see a link below -- and he gave me permission to share and expand upon his ideas in this video.
So how do we know the Bible is not a well-written book?
    1) It's not well-organized.
The Bible is a huge mess. It's in chronological order, but thematically, it's all over the place. That might be okay for a history book, but not when it's a guidebook for life.
And that's a huge problem when Christians use the Bible to justify their beliefs.
They have to flip through the book all over the place to find particular verses to defend their views.
You want verses about Love? Marriage? Homosexuality? Abortion? You won't find them in one place. There's not even a helpful index.
It forces Christians to quote verses out of context all the time.
    2) There are no pictures!
I know: not all books need pictures, but sometimes, diagrams and charts are really useful. Even the Lord of the Rings books include a map.
Where's the diagram of a family tree instead of a long, boring list of begats?
What about a timeline to help readers keep track of the characters?
    Just sayin'. It'd be helpful.
    3) It's not very specific.
    4) It's not easy to understand.
    5) It's not consistent.
    6) It doesn't make any clear predictions
    7) It lacks knowledge that humans of the time couldn't have had
    8) The characters make no sense
    9) It's too repetitive.
    10) It goes too far with the stories
God should've backed off. Instead, he jumped the shark in the first chapter.
    ..............
The Bible isn't the Good Book. It sure as hell isn't a great book. It's a lot of cut and paste mythology thrown together by men thousands of years ago.
All the action takes place in a tiny speck of the world.
If the Bible was a better written book, it'd be much more convincing, too. As it stands, there's a reason people are leaving their churches. They know better than to take the Bible seriously.
As the saying goes, the Bible is just fan fiction based on an ancient game of telephone.

David Hopkins how is he cherry picking if Christianity does have hundreds of denominations that can't agree on their Bibles, how to get their 'get out of hell free' card, and whose version of their god can beg more $ from their cult, I mean from their congregation, and they can't agree on what scientific information is ok to believe.
It's like people turn their critical thinking off when they become a believer, as they have to win gold medals in mental Olympics to make their "holy" book seem believable.

@khalifa Albazzi well, first, this guy brings up about how theirs different types of Christians, and even though that right, if all Christians actually followed everything in the Bible, their would only be one type of christian. Now,if you want me to prove that the bible is true, well...let me ask you something, the bible was created thousands of years ago, yet the bible says stuff that has come to pass in our generation, for example, Israel became a country, it literally said they would be a country in the BIBLE. and also, kinda ironic that Israel is a super small country, and its surrounded by countries who want to blow them off the map, but weird how Israel never gets taken over,or gets blown up. wanna know why, its cuz the BIBLE says that Israel is Gods chosen people,so no matter what people do, no one is able to make Israel extinct(figure of speech)Now prove to me that God dont exist:)

The thing I always found funny as a kid (and even now) is that the greatest villain in the bible was Lucifer (Satan) because he went against god. His crime: giving humans knowledge. If you simply alter the names in the story, it is an almost mirror image of the Greek mythology of Prometheus. Funny how he was a hero in that story.

Andrew Kirkbride Well Prometheus kind of "won"... his gift to mankind stayed with mankind (fire)
The knowledge from the forbidden fruit though was more or less successfully eradicated by making the people religious and have them not follow the knowledge of right and wrong but the book's declarations of right and wrong... so Eve and her Sponsor "Satan" (who isn't really identified such in Genesis and for a long time after) loose and only have the suffering in common with big P.

Even atheists have seen God in their visions and during NDE and were transformed by the experience..you however have no proof that there is no God..how can you declare with with 100 % certainty that He doesn't exist..relying only with your own limited understanding to rationalize such belief?
Even Einstein who is way more intelligent than you are, though He did not believe in the God of the Bible..still believed in his heart that there is an Intelligent Being who created the universe..because he undertood the intricacies and the complexieties in which the universe is made.Don't rely on your own limited human undertstanding on things. Question everything including your own belief..otherwise it is nothing short of bigotry--to have a mind that is closed to the truth because you declare with 100% certainty the validity of your own belief... the non existence of God even without verifiable proof to prove the validity of your stance. You have no proof..we who believe in God's existence have proof.
The universe is made with such unimaginable precision that Einstein is wise enough to admit that the universe is made by a Thinking Being..an Intelligent Creator..and by now I assure you that he already discovered who that Intelligent Being is.. that the One who made the universe is the God of his ancestors. Einstein is a Jew.

Those who doubt the existence of God and the afterlife must look at the claims of so many people about their journey in the spiritual realm. Some in visions and dreams, while others had such mind boggling experience during NDE [near death experience]. These people who have such claims come from different ethnicities, social and educational backgrounds, and religious beliefs [including atheists]
You may say it's just an hallucination...but
Do you know what truly spells the difference between those who just had hallucinations with those who had a real personal experience with God and the spiritual realm?
Those who had hallunications never came back with something tangible to prove the veracity of their claims, of their experience, while those who had a personal experience with God or in the spiritual realm came back with tangible proof in the form of the following:
      1. A miraculous recovery from a fatal illness or from a high risk surgery that even doctors are so dumbfounded they consider these recoveries as nothing short of a miracle.
      2. These people who have had real experience in the spiritual realm come with stories they would not have known had they not been told by the spiritual beings who spoke to them while in heaven.
      Case in point:
      1. DR. EBEN ALEXANDER, BRAIN SURGEON
He only came to know that he had a sister after his near death experience. He was an only child of his adopted parents. His adoption was not disclosed and was kept a secret so he never got to meet his one and only sister who died years ago.
How did he find out he had a sister after his NDE?
He said during his journey in heaven, he met this woman who had so much love for him. She became his guide during his journey in the spiritual realm.
When this brain surgeon came back to life and recovered, he became so curious about the identity of the woman and shared with his parents how he felt so connected, on a soul level, to this woman.
His parents then revealed to him that he was adopted and that he had a sister who died years ago..and so to cut the story short, he set out to get more information about his sister and was able to get hold of her picture. He was flabbergasted as the woman in the picture is exactly the same woman who guided him during his journey in the heavenly realm. He became a cganged man after his NDE. He now believes in God. [He used to be an atheist]

When I mentioned to some people that the characters in the book lived to be 800yrs old and 430 years old, they just looked at me and was like I never read that, or that's not true.. And I sat there laughing to myself because that's right in the first few books of the Bible which basically shows that a lot of people don't even read the Bible for themselves.. Which is sad, but when I read that I just couldn't help but laugh. No disrespect to ppl who believe in it but it was actually comical to me..

The Qur'an is mostly poetry about how wonderful and merciful Allah is. Arabic speakers say it is impressive. A lot of it is just threats of hellfire if you reject the teachings. Parts of it are social rules, like a set of bylaws for a medieval Islamic village. Everything is specified. There is very little science or history. It is much more consistent than the bible. The bible is bat-shit crazy. The Qur'an is actually quite reasonable except for the hell fire stuff. The rules for behaviour make a lot more sense than the bible. I read it cover to cover as I did the bible. The Qur'an has commentaries, which are called the Hadith. The goofier stuff comes from them.

It is written in Bible prophecy that in the last days young and old, male and female will dream dreams and will see visions of the Spirit realm. I have seen it for myself..while praying in my room..fully awake. We are living in the last days...Take advantage of it..ask God to show you a vision..come to Him in repentance and seek Him with all your heart and He will make Himself known to you.

Darth Moles there are lots of theories to that. Stephen hawking had some pretty good guesses based off the way the universe grows. The universe doesn’t have to be created by magic. Idk idrc what people believe, but I just think there are too many different religions for me to believe any of them. Like there’s Christianity but there are thousands of different denominations that have pretty different core beliefs. Which one is the right denomination? It’s an important difference. I used to be Christian but after I watch debate after debate it just seems too unlikely to me, but it is comforting to believe in a god, I just don’t believe that of god existed, he would send people to hell just because they are skeptical of his existence, afterall there is no evidence besides a book. All he would have to do is pop down for a sec and say hey

    • @darthcolorlesstheblind6717
      @darthcolorlesstheblind6717 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Beacause the book of Isaiah is in the Old Testiment. It is well documented to have been written in 600-400 B.C. Jesus' crucifiction resembles everything Isaiah wrote down. That is no coincidence. And before you try to disrupt this, Romans 1:18-21 states "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness, suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them because God has shown it to them. For His invisible attributes, namely His eternal power and divine nature have been clearly perceived ever since the creation of the world, in things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For they although they knew God, they did not honor Him as God, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened."

It is very posible for a Virgin to give birth. How? Because If i recall correctly, the term "Virgin" in a langrage the bible was translated from, Greek if i recall correctly or Something, only meant a young madien, and had nothing to do with her sex life. It was mininterpited while traslating.. like many other things, and that's how the modern term of virgin came to be. I came onto this page on the side bar from my own and the title just hit me- it's true, the Bible is not "well written " from a literary stand point. I remember when I vowed to never own a bible and never thought of having a relationship with God, or what I have learned to be His divine organization. I have no real idea what changed my heart, but, it did change and I bought a Bible!! I loved it! I wanted to read it! I was amazed at the transformation and then......I started interacting with people and discussing the Bible and "faith" in God, then I came to the conclusion that many people are very uncomfortable discussing the flagrant contradictions and inconsistencies in the Bible even though they are undeniably present! God never called the 66 book Bible holy- it's a great inspirational book and if you are lead to read it and somehow want to learn from it- you most likely will. Stepping out of an religious organization and really developing our critical thinking skills is an important part of how we grow in to the mortally inexplicable desire to learn about the divine and unseen. I am grateful for this person and the challenge he poses for us to learn and grow. It's a personal journey, but, we can sometimes take it with companions that we may not agree with; we can love and share can't we? Build and fortify your faith - remember the account of Jesus being directly confronted/tempted by satan - that was pretty strong stuff and a great example of how we can endure and finish the race with faith, patience and intelligence.

The very concept of a "bible" invalidates the notion of an omnipotent, supreme being that has a message for his supposed creations. Such an entity would speak directly to ALL of them, not just a few, not 90,000 years after they'd been created, not in one tiny area of the world. This entity wouldn't rely on a media or format only a very few had access to and could understand, wouldnt rely on something that can so easily be misinterpreted and confused, something so contradictory that it invalidates itself as pure rubbish from the get go. If an entity did create a book, or dictated such a book to be written, it would be flawless. It would be clear, unimpeachable, perfect; you wouldn't be able to put it down. It would be The Standard for every book written after it. Instead what humans have, whether it be a bible or a scroll of the dead or hieroglyphics, is a poorly organized collection of contradictions and fantasy.

Allow me to simplify for your benefit: any book with a lot of depth needs study to grasp its contents, that fact doesn't make it badly written. And I think any of us should be able to admit when we have a problem absorbing the material of a book, it could be that we simply aren't using good study methods, or we're expecting too much progress at an early point in study. That's not a fault, a lot of us are like this; the fualt would be juding the material by our own ability to take it in.

1 - You just admitted that it's in chronological order. That makes it organized. If you think it should be organized by topic, first of all, that's just your personal preference, and secondly, there are topical Bibles out there that are. Get one.
2 - Again, personal preference. By the way, you don't have access to Google? I'm pretty sure you could find said timelines, charts, maps, family tree(s) online.
3 - Have you ever read Leviticus? It was pretty much a checklist for the Israelites. For the new covenant, Jesus sums it up in two commands (see Luke 10:25-28). If you want a different checklist, make one. It's not that hard.
4 - Mark Twain said that it's not the parts of the Bible he doesn't understand that troubled him. It was those pesky parts that he did understand. Most of the denominational differences are a result of either petty differences in opinion, topics the Bible is silent on, or just plain incorrect theology. Unitarians have their own denomination because they disagree that Jesus is the Son of God. Obviously they didn't get that from the Bible.
5 - All Biblical contradictions have been addressed elsewhere. I suggest you do your own research for the ones that bother you the most. (Here's a good place to start: defendinginerrancy.com/bible-difficulties/).
6 - Ummm . . . have you actually read the OT prophets and matched up the prophecies they made that came true? They were not only very clear, but were fulfilled by Jesus. Those who think they know when the world will end and when Jesus will return obviously haven't read Matt. 24:36. This information was so secret that even Jesus in His human form didn't have access to it! The Bible doesn't make the claim that it contains clues that would lead to knowing this. You are making a false accusation by saying that it does.
7 - This isn't true. OT law discusses dietary habits, cleaning rituals, and other health advice that nobody would have known about before germ theory. It also does in fact discuss astronomy, biology, geology, and microbiology. By the way, even if this were true, so what? The books of the Bible weren't written to be science textbooks. There's not much science in a biography about Julius Caesar or a book about the Revolutionary War. That doesn't have anything to do with the validity of the material. Also by the way, the United States didn't become a country until 1776. The last book of the Bible (Revelation) was written around 96 AD. Do the math!
8 - This is begging the question. You think the Bible is fiction and should read like fiction. Complex characters aren't required to write non fiction even if the Bible didn't contain them (and it does!). You really don't think the characters in the Bible have flaws? Have you read it?!
9 - Very vague reason. Not sure what you're referring to other than genealogies for repetition. They're also not a chore to read if you understand why they're there and how record keeping was done back then. The Bible does in fact elaborate on several characters in the genealogies.
10 - You think there are too many miracles in the Bible. I have the feeling that if there weren't any, then you would criticize it for not having any at all!
The bottom line here is that this entire list is based on either personal preference, or a complete lack of study. It doesn't sound like you have read the Bible, let alone researched the supposed contradictions or the history of the people who wrote it.

    1) It is a collection of books from various viewpoints that back each other up. If you are bouncing around, it is because you are cross-referencing each one. I suppose it could have been done to your specificity, but I never had a problem with it. 2) That one was funny, ha ha 4) God never said you needed pastors for clarification of his word, man did. The Holy Spirit blesses you with an inner understanding and a hunger for His word 5) You said that there are contradictions in Genesis and of Jesus's life, but you haven't explained even one example. Go ahead, I am listening.
    6) Man could not mentally handle the day if they truly knew when Revelation would occur. There are specific signs to prepare us though. I know that doesn't impress you. 7) You just proved the Bible's validity 8) Then you haven't been paying attention. Almost every person in the Bible is complex. I agree with you that some of the acts are strange. 9) I still don't see what you see. You still haven't proven the inconsistencies. You do realize that there were many authors who had written these books, right? I agree with you on the "Begat" portion. 10) You can't assume that people are leaving because of the Bible; people are leaving because of the exposed false religions. I can't argue the over the top stories, I can only tell you that I have met Jesus and he referenced that the guidelines for salvation to his children were in His book.

I will do my best in this moment to reasonably and kindly illustrate my disagreements with this man's claims.
    1. The Bible functions partially as an illustrative narrative. Wisdom comes through a holistic picture. The Bible also functions as a historical narrative in many ways (whether or not you believe various parts of it to be true). Does it really need to be organized like genre of literature which didn't even exist yet to be valuable (Also it's not entirely chronological, in case you hadn't noticed)? You do realize that if it was written by God to (as many say) barbaric tribesmen and women in the Middle East, perhaps it was best written the way it was to be understood by them, rather than discarded by them. The Bible is not strictly a philosophical treatise used to justify certain claims.
    2. There are many editions of the Bible with pictures, diagrams, timelines, et c. This is simply a claim from ignorance. These are generally called "study Bibles" or something like that. And many which are not "study Bibles" actually also have maps.
    3. It's not simply an instruction booklet, either. Like I mentioned in #1, illustrative narrative. That being said, however, if you are to read the Bible with appropriate literary acumen, then it might be more apparent that moral deviation is not merely a matter of hearing a list and not doing any of its no-nos. Though the Ten Commandments were some pretty clear prohibitions, they pointed to a single standard (summed up by Jesus in Luke 10, I think: 1-5 indicates that you should love God, and 6-10 illustrate that you should love neighbor, which is a way of loving God), from which any other thing would count as deviation. The whole Bible points to (basically) a single standard. Genesis 2 provides a pattern for sexuality, and Genesis 1-2, the work week. Any deviation is considered sinful or problematic, and great complexity is introduced by sin. And that's the first three books of the Bible. You literally just need to open the book to see that.
    4. This is probably true, but the sins of those who use the Bible to suit their own purposes are NOT the Bible. Just because it was intentionally misunderstood by generations of sinful human beings doesn't mean that it's bad. In fact, the Bible points to this being a problem, as Paul points to false teachers in the 1 Timothy, and literally every other book of the Bible accuses humans of being evil. Care must be taken when reading the Word, and I believe there are seminaries and teachers and preachers who actually do some good work in interpretation. Perhaps the difficulty of interpreting Christianity properly was part of God's plan (I think it is).
    5. Most of the OT "contradictions" are a failure to understand the genres of literature. The early Genesis narrative is not meant to be entirely historical or scientific. It is intended to be poetic and illustrative, like many of the creation stories of its time. Look at the poetic repetition and imagery. Who created the universe and gave it order? What is the pattern of living that we should follow? Why is there suffering? These are questions not meant to be answered scientifically. Scientific literature, as a genre that we recognize, didn't even exist then. I think it would be a little selfish to expect that God cater to our weird, dry, post-Enlightenment preferences rather than also the people to whom it was originally written. The NT "contradictions" aren't categorically opposed claims (logical contradictories), as far as I can tell, just differently approached narratives. But I may not be sure what Hemant here is referring to.
    6. The prophetic genre (contrary to popular belief) deals with the present in light of the future, not so much the future in light of the present. It's an illustrative (again) and refining principle that causes us to trust in God, rather than ourselves. But that being said, predictions are made VERY CLEARLY in some of the OT prophets concerning Israel's fate, the Babylonian captivity, and the advent of new rulers. You don't need a whole lot of insider knowledge. You just need to read carefully. Frankly, for those who try to predict the end and Jesus's return, Matthew 24, I think, says that no one knows the day or the hour. And I personally think we've been and will be in the end times from Jesus's ascension to his return. I think those who retroactively try to adapt modern understanding to the Bible are wrong, and really, doing that for the "end times" wasn't really popular until the past two-hundred years. 1800 years of church history is opposed to that. So let me get this right - you don't think it's a history book (based on something you said in your first claim), but would believe it if it were a confirmable history of the future? Did I understand that contradiction properly?
    7. Again, a "coincidence" intended to make reading it easier for the people of its time. As well as not being a history of the future or a science book. I think it's pretty clear in the Bible that ultimate salvation doesn't come from science or knowledge of the future. Why would it need those things? Who, in 500 A.D., would need to know about the United States. The Bible only has relevant information. The history of God and his people. How to live. How salvation comes. I guess #7 has little to do with it being badly written, but rather has to do with Enlightenment values. I guess that nobody here loves any scientific reads that have little emphasis on stuff outside their fields of focus. On the Origin of Species, anyone? Doesn't really address quantum mechanics...
    8. Literally every character but God and Jesus displays complexity in the sense that Hemant says. Every character. There are so many deviations from the norm in those books. And if God is entirely good, even when he kills people, doesn't that just make "good" and "God" a little more complex than we thought? "It really makes you wonder who you should be rooting for." - Not complex? You said it yourself. Christians have been dealing with these complexities for centuries, and Christian thinkers have written books and books on the issues because the characters are complex, at least, epistemically.
    9. This guy hasn't read any postmodern literature? A good writer tells a complex and beautiful story, seen in many hues. Often, at least. Wait. He said that about Faulkner, but criticized the Bible for doing something similar, while claiming (without evidence, mind you) that it does not. I'm literally confused about what Hemant is saying. But also, maybe we're really bad at learning from a single telling of the story. The genealogy sections are hugely culturally relevant, and many of the characters are mentioned in various stories. If this was written by God through human hands, don't forget that these humans valued their ancestry and that we understand them and their culture better for it. And if you can trace an entire lineage, suddenly stories like Esther make a lot more sense (conflict between bloodlines that have shared a history), or the prophecies of the OT, concerning the Messiah of David's line.
    10. Eh. Post-Enlightenment assumptions. This would take a while to deal with. But a lot of people pre-Enlightenment believed that stuff. If your criterion for good literature is "fits within post-Enlightenment naturalistic, mechanistic, atheistic explanations for things," then I guess you have a point. But a lot of people today enjoy pre-Enlightenment literature or themes, too, and consider the stuff good literature and educational, even if it doesn't fit into that weird criterion. Who here enjoys stuff like The Lord of the Rings or considers Homer to be classic literature? Who here enjoys good science fiction? Anyway, this doesn't seem like someone really did his homework to understand literature. Maybe he did, though. I find this video to be strange.
P.S. - Jane Austen (and a gazillion others) must not be literarily significant, according to Hemant. The scope of her novels is even smaller than that "tiny" scope of the Bible. I know some atheists who would be pretty mad about that.
