I used an HK416 while working overseas. Our setups were really heavy. We’re talking 12-16lbs. I had a Daniel Defense(If you have questions about that, let me know)rail/handguard on mine, which cut some weight. And I also didn’t have a KAC NT4 like some of my buddies. Which also helped with weight. I had an AAC suppressor on mine, and it tended to throw gas pretty bad. The guys with KAC NT4’s did not have this problem. But they suffered from the added weight from the NT4’s. So it was a trade off. But the AAC’s sucked. I have heard the newer “tanodized” 416’s don’t have gassing issues. Geissele basically did the packaging and tuning for these new guns, so it makes sense.
Thanks for sharing your experience, it’s always cool to get firsthand accounts on these weapon systems 👍 I have heard before that the AAC cans (despite being designed for the 416) were gassy. I’m not surprised that the NT4’s ran better based on my experience with them. As far as the tanodized guns go, I’m assuming that their better gassing is largely attributed to the Surefire cans they are almost always seen with. The Legacy and SOCOM line of cans are great on overgassed rifles from what I’ve seen, even SCAR rifles. Thanks for watching! Edit: I’ve been informed by a reliable source that the tanodized guns also featured a vented gas block which bleeds off excess pressure in the system. Geissele did deliver those guns to JSOC, but apparently it was due to Germany throwing a fit over exporting the complete rifles, so HK sent “parts kits” to Geissele for final assembly using their triggers and handguards.
Jesus christ 12-16 lbs? How does it even get that heavy? My MR556 is 16in and loaded with accessories and other bullshit and only gets to around 11lbs. It doesnt have a suppressor, but surely that wouldnt add another 5lbs to the rifle
@@epicfortnitekid8536 Mine wasn’t 16lbs. But I did know guys who had guns that weighed as much as a PKM. They had the OEM quad rails, IR lights/lasers, Weapon lights, KAC NT4 suppressor(which by itself is like 24 ounces), heavy stocks like the B5, LPVO’s, etc. My setup wasn’t as heavy. Still decently heavy, but not as bad as others. It depends on the setup. One thing can completely change the weight. For example, one guy got stuck with an old PEQ, and that added weight. Meanwhile I had a DBal, which weighed less. So each setup is different. Mine just happened to have a bunch a “light” accessories on it.
Here in Poland our SOF also primarily uses the 416's, and we have really interesting builds to pair with them. A bunch of builds from one SOF unit (JWK) had lancer carbon fiber handguards on them, presumably to save weight. Manta suppressor covers are also pretty commonly seen featured in these builds.
I use a lancer handguard on my MPX and I love it. I know carbon fiber has its downsides in terms of rigidity but boy is it light and it doesn’t get hot anywhere near as fast as a normal handguard
If I’m not mistaken I think the Brownells bolt carriers are “Full” profile with the MR556 notch. So you can run them on a select fire lower without modification.
Specialized Tactical Solutions (STS) is working on making 416 clone lowers now. They're pretty expensive but your only other option aside from getting a MR556 or MR223 lower since Brownells isn't doing 416 lowers right now.
FYI, and correct me if im wrong, the Tango Down BG16 grip shown in this video is discontinued. This shows up in the wild often so if its a grip you want, thats something to be aware of. Sidenote - The daniel defense rail is practically unobtanium. Someone asked for $1900 for one at one point, and ive heard of them going for more.
I appreciate the honesty about the time and price of cloning. To do it right, its going to cost a ton of money and time, but well worth it in the long run. Kicking my self for not taking my buddy up on buying one of these uppers on a group buy. It was a little over $3K, which i thought was crazy at the time.
Yep; Midwest Industries handguards have been used as well. The “special” rails I mention in the video are just the hardest to find since the Lancer and MI are available from the manufacturer
Nice video bro! Very well done. I'm lucky enough to own expensive "two hard to find" Brownells BRN-4 lower receivers... that were engraved to HK416 markings by a well known Texas engraving company. Both of my rifles have 100% factory original complete HK416 uppers. One is the earlier AF heavy barrel and the other one is a newer medium profile HK416 barrel. I absolutely love them both with no complaints whatsoever. I'm use to the weight and characteristics etc of this weapon. Although milled in the United States IMO because the BRN-4 lower receiver were actually from HK Germany (metal supply) and imported into the USA by Brownells, I consider my rifles to be as close to the real HK416s as possible without the FA switch. Fun fact: I earned my CAB while serving tours during OIF/OEF and very seldom did I ever use the fun switch... most of my gunning in combat was on SA. 😅
The M27 IAR is a 16.5" with bayo lug, not 16.1. Does matter, only because several places sell 16.1s and the bayonets won't fit correctly if you can get the lug on unless you have an extra long muzzle device or you have the full correct length barrel. M27 commonly uses: M7 RCO (TA31 with SDO's wacky reticle, last few years) SDO+RMR (TA11 with M249 reticle, since 2010) SCO (1-8 VCOG, last few years) PEQ-15 PEQ-16 Safran ICUGR (the SRF, in the last few years) NT4
I will die on the hill that the HK416 isn’t heavy and is quite light. Yeah, it’s heaviER than an M4, but the M4 is probably the lightest service rifle ever adopted. Basically ANY service rifle is going to weigh more. Compared to other service rifles, the 416 is definitely on the lighter end. Also I’ve never met anyone not on the internet who thought it had harder recoil, nobody who’s shot mine and none of my fellow IAR gunners seemed to ever notice any difference at all.
Everything’s relative when talking about weight. I was comparing the standard (original) HK416 to the M4 carbine since it’s a more fair comparison. The M27 specifically weights over 2 pounds more than the M4A1, mainly due to the longer/heavier profile barrel. That likely eats up a lot of the recoil, along with the added weight of the bipod and larger ACOG model that the M4A1 isn’t typically issued with.
@@johndavis1312 I own one and was an IAR gunner. I disagree and have never personally known anyone who thought it had more, but then again I’ve only ever used the thick HK pad so maybe that’s a factor
@arcblooper2699 I'm not saying it's terrible but when comparing my mr762 to my scar 17 and scar 20 it's got sharper recoil for sure. Harder to track the shot
I just find m27 quite funny. 16in heavy profile barrel, paired with heavy nt4, but wait thats too light for the corps. Lets add a heavy vcog on it. Sprinkle some peq and light on it, and you get yourself a gun that’s really capable but also extremely heavy. Pretty much every infantry double duty as dmr and saw
Joules - Unite of measure: the work done when 1 newton moves a mass a distance of 1 meter. I'm curious about the French usage of their 416s as their barrel are cut to accommodate rifle grenades but I have yet to see any pics of them actually using it.
There's just a lot more metal in that original 416 quad rail handguard. HK were asked for a quad rail that could handle the recoil and in true German style engineered it to last forever. Puts a lot of weight out front
Patriot Ordinance Factory makes an excellent version of this rifle for less than half the cost. The POF rifles are built extremely well and run very reliably, suppressed or not.
The metal tab in the receiver is actually on the barrel , the barrel extension to be exact when I had my barrel cut down I cut it since I already had it out , the BCG is the neutered one so if you get a brownells or an actual 416 Carrier you can put your bolt in and use it like that, but cut the tan, get a full auto carrier and then you can use it on the select fire lowers , but since the barrels done come chrome lined I’d caution against a lot of heavy fire so you don’t screw your barrel
