I'm really glad i discovered you're channel it has opened my intrest off appalachia and the stories in it
I do however have a question Will you ever cover the Hathfield/McCoy feud as it's one off the most famous fueds in appalachia
Support from a swedish sunscriber🇸🇪
Wow didn't know that. Great history lesson.
@@lavalslounge335 I can't speak for JD, but I do remember him saying he hasn't covered that story because its one that everyone does and isn't even really in the top 50 all time appalachian feuds. I know he did one of Outlaw Otto Wood who was raised in the outlaw ways by the Hatfields... but Otto would go on to become 100x's the outlaw they were. Good video, check it out
Lets adopt the ideas of these wise men. Wow! Power for the ordinary man. How foreign that idea ...
. has Become . Great educational story
Agreed Linda- the idea is so simple that it would be revolutionary in todays world
I never knew this.
Thank you for sharing this important piece of American history.
I was rooting for the State of Franklin.
❤️ thank you
I know a man with a PhD in History and when I mentioned the State of Franklin to him he gave me a puzzled look. He had honestly never heard this. Mind you, this is a man who has studied our history pretty much all his life in great depth. Has taught on the University level and he has never heard this. Wow! Thanks for sharing this. Very eye opening.
It’s not a history taught in schools
Obviously not even taught at the highest levels of academia either. This story isn't just some footnote, this story is important to the development of our nation. It NEEDS to be taught and studied not just for its historical value but for its insight into the mind of the common man and those politicians who weren't in lockstep with the federalist papers. My doctor friend was fascinated by your video and says he may write an academic paper on this depending on what information he can dig up. Thanks for posting this video.
I do believe it's time we return to "The State Of Franklin" and the values it represents.
Amen
We've already made it back there!!!
That's theoretically impossible..due to the fact that your Governor swears an oath before starting his/her job in office to not become its own country.
We need to form a new state of Franklin, maybe one east and one west of the Mississippi. Great history lesson, thanks JD❤
Thank you Diane, have a blessed day ❤️
Patriots in California have been trying to form the state of Jefferson for a while. I would actually consider a move to that state.
That state would be Texas
Ya if there ever were to be a new state formed it’d be Northern California. They’re totally unrepresentated. Also east of the mountains in Oregon has considered to form a new state or merge with the state of Idaho. Central and eastern Oregon has way more in common with Idaho then western Oregon.
Maybe we need to take note but instead of they can’t be elected, we demand a federal law that no one can leave Washington richer than they were when they were elected.
God bless Free People who stand against those who would take their freedom. God bless our forebears for showing us how to be free. I pray they are not too ashamed of us and maintain hope that we may yet live up to their legacy and make for ourselves the nation they envisioned.
Amen well said
Hi I live in the UK (Scotland) and love history. I had never heard of the State of Franklin until I watched your video. I found it utterly fascinating. A lot of the Settlers in North Carolina were from Scotland. A lot had been sent to the Carolinas and Virginia following their arrest and imprisonment after the Battle of Culloden in 1745. These Jacobites as they were called were first imprisoned (or hanged) by the British and then transported as indentured servants for 7-14yrs to the Carolinas or Virginia. Few returned to Scotland and most fought for George Washington in the Revolutionary War. Their numbers were boosted by the Highlanders displaced by The Clearances. They would often settle near their kinsmen some of whom they had fought with on the Battlefield at Culloden. Highland warfare tactics are quite similar to those of the Native Americans in that they were very adept at carrying out raids consisting of small bands of men on foot and horseback. These were rapid attacks. They also would do the Highland yell to scare their enemies. I have sometimes wondered whether the Rebel Yell famous in the Southern States, arose from the Highland yell? It’s a shame these people were prevented from having their state recognised and also that the US government soon reverted to lining their own pockets. My limited understanding of the people living in this area of the US is that even today, they are viewed as ‘different’. I prefer to think they still retain the traditional values their Northern and Western neighbours seem to have abandoned. I also like to think that I’d feel at home in the Appalachians. Thank you for your video, I thoroughly enjoyed it. ❤
Wow, thank you so much for sharing all that and I’m so honored that you’re watching videos on this channel. Please make yourself at home. Blessings from East Tennessee USA.
Thank you! That is some great stuff.
Thank you for sharing that history of the Scots! Strongest men in the WORLD are of course...Scots...
STOLTMAN BROTHERS RULE
🌶❤️❤️🌶
I'm a native of E TN, and old enough that public schools still taught (non-rewritten) TN history when I was in middle school. Of course I knew that John Sevier was TN's first governor, and also knew about his role in the battle of Kings Mountain. Never knew he had prior experience as governor, or what folks west of the mountains went through. Thanks!
I too am thankful that I learned Tennessee history as a child- but I’ve always said to take anything taught to you in public school with a grain of salt- someone is making big bucks to try and mold children into an ideology .
Thanks for sharing this as the government would never allow it's citizens to contemplate such a law. It would surely catch on and strip them of their corrupt power over "We The People"!
Amen
Best history lesson... especially the Constitution of Franklin! Imagine if regular people ran the government instead of corporate puppets...😐
I'm going to be thinking about this all day! Thanks JD... have a great weekend 😎👍
Isn’t it amazing that this common sense approach is radical to n the eyes of the government?
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller The Federal Reserve probably wouldn't have been allowed...😐
The founding father never intended people who hold public office to be a career, now we got politicians who are getting rich on inside stock trading from information that ordinary folks would never see, it sad to see the country turn into one big graft.🤨
I say we bring back our Appalachian state
@@tylerepperson830 I agree! 👍
1784, you're 100 years off my friend. Thanks for doing this story! I'm a proud "Frankalachian"❤
Thank you
My husband kept saying 1784 over and over as if you could hear him. We love your videos, everyone misses something occasionally.
Based Appalachian storyteller
❤️
Thanks JD for bringing us a great historical story of which I was totally clueless. Learning is a great thing no matter what your age.
It is an amazing story and sadly it's never told or taught in this fashion. It's always an afterthought or in foot notes or barely mentioned in textbooks. Even then, it's told in a way to belittle Appalachia and its people. I had to set the record straight on this one.
Thank you for the history lesson, I really appreciate your channel.
I knew our government was not what they teach in school. Course now days they do t teach anything in school ❤good story. I enjoyed it. Thank you. 🙏
Exactly- what they teach in school is propaganda
Never through history has government done everything right or good. However, we had the right foundation, and it's people's were willing to live free under it's independence
Research the Whiskey Rebellion, when George Washington set the precedent for using US troops against civilians.
These days most students are unable to read and too lazy to do so if they can.
One of the reasons I love your videos is because every single one introduces people to the absolute glory of the humanities. People, please remember how much you learn from and enjoy these. This is about history, folklore, language, and culture. Those are all the different studies that you hear mocked at k12 and college institutions, usually through corporate funded media, whose main role is to support big business' goal to shape everything to their own benefit. I love all studies, but the major results of science right now are human oppression and the destruction of our social fabric, plus maybe even outright murder, but for a profit. The humanities make you less of a tool.
I really really appreciate this comment every bit of it. I was a teacher for 22 years and I had a front row seat to witness what you described in your comment. You are correct this is what they mock. This is what they don’t want you to know for fear that you might know otherwise.
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller Isn't it bizarre how all over TH-cam we see evidence that people not only need these supposedly useless subjects that we teach, but also crave them, even while having been brainwashed to deride them because they're "useless" (I would say even dangerous) to Wall Street?
We in this area still get forgotten about even today......Thinks for telling the story J.D.!
Thank you Chris
I'm glad people stood up for John Severe. Politics was corrupt back then too. This was not in any of my history lessons in school!
John Sevier 🎉
Bring back the State of Franklin!!!
America sure needs some common sense politics about right now
This was a great video and I'm sharing it everywhere. I grew up in WNC and my mother's family has been there since the 1700's. I'm stunned they never talk about this. Thanks for sharing this info.
Thank you so much!
Would have been nice to have a government run by people that wanted to do something good.
Exactly
I can only imagine the excitement and optimism that these people must of felt.
Me too
I can only imagine the pain and disappointment in the union that our for fathers of the Appalachians have had both Cherokee and Scots Irish maybe one day our mountain home will be free and truly self governing again
Thank you for this wonderful story about the State of Franklin. Having been born and raised in Northeast Tennessee I find it fascinating to hear all of your wonderful stories about the people and the land that I grew up in.
Thank you, Janice. I’m glad you enjoyed this story and I hope you’re having a wonderful day in East Tennessee. We’re out here on Norris Lake for the next few days camping.
The rich rule , and rule corruptly. Never heard this story before.
They don’t like to teach this story of rebellion to young minds, they’d rather teach how the government saved them from the tyranny of the king- but as this tale shows- it was nearly a transfer of power to the new kings rebranded as presidents
This is the first time I have heard this story. I have never read it in any history books either. Today a poor man, or woman, does not have a chance of ever becoming President of the United States of America. Politicians keep the U.S.A. at war somewhere to support the rich (who get richer from wars). Wouldn't it be wonderful if the rich could NEVER run for any office in the U.S.A. (especially for the President of the U.S.A.)?
"How are politicians similar to dippers?" "When they are first put in the office they are usually clean; but, in a short time they are very dirty." "Dippers and politicians should be changed often and thrown out with the other garbage."
I assure you they don’t teach this in public schools on purpose. All they want is obedient taxpayers.
History is a rich tapestry, best enjoyed by your telling.
Thank you.
Thank you so much, my friend. Hope you’re having a great day wherever you are.

Thank you for this very special story! I learned so much more about my 6th great-grand uncle, who was one of the signers of the documents you mentioned. He arrived in Watauga with John Sevier and was one of two men left behind to protest the fort (and the women and children living there) from the Indians while everyone else went to fight in the Battle of Kings Mountain. His sister's husband was Colonel Andrew Hampton from Rutherford County, NC. The Hamptons were ancestors of George Washington, Robert E. Lee, and Merriwether Lewis.
Wow, thank you so much for sharing this important history
Really enjoyed this history

Thank you for such a wonderful story of history. You are the best at telling interesting stories. Thank you so very much.❤
You are so welcome Angela ❤️
At one time I was an antique map collector. I retained one map from the early 1800's (English) that was still showing Franklinia as a separate state.
that's cool, id love to see it
Thanks for a good history lesson.
Glad you enjoyed it
More history that it’ll take story tellers to pass on. They sure ain’t gonna teach self reliance and survival or pride in your country and people in school like they used to. Thank You Sir.
You got that right, well said
Yes Sir! Another banger! It is always a great day, when one hears stories that Hit Close to home!!! John Sevier, IYR, I grew up on his Farm Home? Parents were caretakers in early 80's? If you don't remember...it is true! lol I even attended Bonny Kate Elementary School. Bonny Kate.. I even remember Bonny and John's Origin Story!!!!!!! Cherokee raid!!!! Her Vertical Leaping ability could have her playing DB for the Volunteers! Not to mention John's Catching/Receiving skills....She jumped up...John caught her....and Franklin is history😍😍 Those were some awesome times growing up, I tell ya! Field Trips to your abode? PRICELESS!!!!!!! They still charged me $3 bucks...LOL Worth it! I knew all the back trails and hidden attractions!!! 😁😁🤣🤣 Buried 2 good Dogs on that property. So yes...I will never forget those days!
Awesome 👏 😎
I'd never heard of this before, what a great story of perseverance and honor of some of the truest hard core mountain people standing up for their values and pure ways of life they struggled for. Thank you and I agree with the franklinians no rich doctors lawyers and other high felutan people in the government was a great idea. There is a movie called lawless, a story about the bondurant brothers of Franklin VA and the legendary liquor stills. Thank you again for the wonderful stories you research so hard to bring us
Thank you Michael
I love this story ❤ too many local people around here in western NC don't even know about the Overmountain men.
I need to do a feature on the over mountain men
Good Morning JD! I wish the schools would take the time to teach more in depth on history. Not a waste of time to teach these students what principles and values built this country on. The sheer determination and dedication these families had to fight for a better future.
The corruption with politicians and government goes back many decades. That is why I say let an everyday person run for office in all states. Money talks as the old saying goes and I won’t finish the rest.
A local Historical Society would be an educational place to visit with your kids. I have found so many interesting things about history that isn’t taught in schools.
Thanks for taking the time to share this story and learn about local history.
Have a very blessed weekend!
As a former 22 year public school teacher, I assure you, their agenda has nothing to do with teaching students the truth. It’s completely about teaching the correct answers on the yearly standardized test that was created by the government. They are merely trying to create obedient workers.
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller I totally agree, that’s why I’m such an advocate for homeschooling.
It would have great if Franklin would have got to be a real state. God bless you and your family sir.🙏🙏🙏
Blessings to you too
Another fantastic true story. I had now idea of Franklin. I was aware of the corrupt US government. Thank you for sharing this with us. God bless you! Love from Canadice NY ❤

And especially with corporate America using their media tool to convince everyone that there is no value in studying anything but the science and technology that business can use to oppress. Yes, we need science and commerce, but we absolutely need the humanities to help people understand how to control it.

A "brave?" Wow. You actually wrote that offensive term in the 21st century.
This was a great story that I didn't know about. I love this channel so much. Fantastic stories, and true too, all the time. Thanks for everything.
That’s what makes this channel unique- the stories are true and historical
Well, you surprised me again! I did not think I would like this story and boy was I surprised! I did not know any of this history and I’d kind of like to do that again.
Thank you Carol- I was a teacher for 22 years- so sometimes I sneak a lesson in these stories- but I do my best to make it painless ❤️
@@TheAppalachianStorytellerI bet you were an inspiring teacher . We were lucky to have a number of those in secondary school . Their teachings seem to be able to trigger our attention and make us more curious of the subject they taught . In a way they made us stand more concious in this world .

Of course!
What a wonderful history lesson. You just gained a new follower. Cheers!
Welcome aboard my friend pull up a chair. Make yourself at home and stay as long as you like.
Same here, referred by a viewer from the Sanity for Sweden channel.
Thank you for this history lesson. I knew something of it, but not all the details. This makes what took place to General George Rogers Clark more understandable as well. He was treated the same way as these mountain men.
Thank you for making that connection my friend

@@TheAppalachianStoryteller I just finished watching, loved it! Learned a few new things too
Bristolian here, it infuriates me they don’t even teach this here locally in schools. I’ve always thought it was so interesting, and you’d never even know if was a thing except for all of the things named state of Franklin in Johnson City (although most don’t think twice about the names, and never look into it.)
Exactly
I absolutely love this channel. I’ve always been proud to be in and from Appalachia, but these stories have increased that 10 fold.
We were taught West Virginia history in jr high, but I think Appalachia history should be taught to all in the area.
Thank you so much, my friend. I pride this channel on being educating on things that have been lost or untold in history.
Thank you for sharing this. I sure enjoyed listening.
Thank you so much 😊
As I age, I gain a deeper respect for Appalachian history because of the free state of Jones & Franklin, which I never heard of till now. American self governing Democracy is the way to fix our country. Representative democracy is really the cause of our excesses. Amazing the Appalachian Americans had such foresight.
Thank you for sharing that my friend
One of the best videos so far, 5/5. Thanks JD! I´v never heard of Franklin and I´d love hear/see more about it with your narration!
Glad you enjoyed this one Larry, thanks for the feedback!
State of Franklin is also the name of a road in Johnson City, TN where I'm from
I appreciate you sharing this important part of American history. I was born and raised in the small town of Elizabethton Tennessee, and it's home to Fort Watauga. This is where the over the mountain men mustered for their March to Kings Mountain. We have a very rich colonial history in this area. I'd love to see you do a piece on Fort Watauga in the future. Thanks for such a fantastic narration JD.
Thanks for the suggestion on Fort Watauga, ill see what I can come up with

Oh, JD I love your channel move with every video. Did not realize you actually taught. Have always known you're a true teacher. Never knew this history and I know this video was truly a labor, but it was wonderful. Thank you.
Yes, I was a public schoolteacher for 22 years a bachelors masters and doctorate degree. I taught orchestra. I taught all the string instruments. However I had a front row seat to seeing how corrupt the entire curriculum is in public education. They do not want an educated public they want a public that’s educated to their beliefs, which in obedient taxpayers.
@TheAppalachianStoryteller I do remember now you saying g you taught music. After that great video I was thinking you taught history. I'm sorry for our education system now you are completely correct. We are losing so many great teachers.
Wow! What an important piece of history that a lot of us knew nothing about! Thank you so much JD for sharing your stories and teaching is a history lesson in the process.
I am thinking we need a complete overhaul of this United States….which is ignorant of how some of us feel. My yearly income is way beneath the lowest part of Missouri’s poverty level. And not a darn thing has changed here in NC. The politicians completely ignore this side of the state until they want something from us. I don't believe a single person in Raleigh would even notice if we broke off and formed our own state until taxes are due. Although being forgotten about by politicians can be a good thing.
You nailed it right there

Hello Appalachian Storyteller! I live in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains in North Georgia. I can walk to Kennesaw Mountain from my house., although city life is fast encroaching! 🙄 I had heard of sterilized versions of the failed state of Franklin when I was a history major in college but the fifteen odd minutes I spent here taught me more about it than everything else I've seen over the years!
