I know a man with a PhD in History and when I mentioned the State of Franklin to him he gave me a puzzled look. He had honestly never heard this. Mind you, this is a man who has studied our history pretty much all his life in great depth. Has taught on the University level and he has never heard this. Wow! Thanks for sharing this. Obviously not even taught at the highest levels of academia either. This story isn't just some footnote, this story is important to the development of our nation. It NEEDS to be taught and studied not just for its historical value but for its insight into the mind of the common man and those politicians who weren't in lockstep with the federalist papers. My doctor friend was fascinated by your video and says he may write an academic paper on this depending on what information he can dig up. Thanks for posting this video.

Hi I live in the UK (Scotland) and love history. I had never heard of the State of Franklin until I watched your video. I found it utterly fascinating. A lot of the Settlers in North Carolina were from Scotland. A lot had been sent to the Carolinas and Virginia following their arrest and imprisonment after the Battle of Culloden in 1745. These Jacobites as they were called were first imprisoned (or hanged) by the British and then transported as indentured servants for 7-14yrs to the Carolinas or Virginia. Few returned to Scotland and most fought for George Washington in the Revolutionary War. Their numbers were boosted by the Highlanders displaced by The Clearances. They would often settle near their kinsmen some of whom they had fought with on the Battlefield at Culloden. Highland warfare tactics are quite similar to those of the Native Americans in that they were very adept at carrying out raids consisting of small bands of men on foot and horseback. These were rapid attacks. They also would do the Highland yell to scare their enemies. I have sometimes wondered whether the Rebel Yell famous in the Southern States, arose from the Highland yell? It’s a shame these people were prevented from having their state recognised and also that the US government soon reverted to lining their own pockets. My limited understanding of the people living in this area of the US is that even today, they are viewed as ‘different’. I prefer to think they still retain the traditional values their Northern and Western neighbours seem to have abandoned. I also like to think that I’d feel at home in the Appalachians. Thank you for your video, I thoroughly enjoyed it. ❤

One of the reasons I love your videos is because every single one introduces people to the absolute glory of the humanities. People, please remember how much you learn from and enjoy these. This is about history, folklore, language, and culture. Those are all the different studies that you hear mocked at k12 and college institutions, usually through corporate funded media, whose main role is to support big business' goal to shape everything to their own benefit. I love all studies, but the major results of science right now are human oppression and the destruction of our social fabric, plus maybe even outright murder, but for a profit. The humanities make you less of a tool.

This is the first time I have heard this story. I have never read it in any history books either. Today a poor man, or woman, does not have a chance of ever becoming President of the United States of America. Politicians keep the U.S.A. at war somewhere to support the rich (who get richer from wars). Wouldn't it be wonderful if the rich could NEVER run for any office in the U.S.A. (especially for the President of the U.S.A.)?
"How are politicians similar to dippers?" "When they are first put in the office they are usually clean; but, in a short time they are very dirty." "Dippers and politicians should be changed often and thrown out with the other garbage."

He arrived in Watauga with John Sevier and was one of two men left behind to protest the fort (and the women and children living there) from the Indians while everyone else went to fight in the Battle of Kings Mountain. His sister's husband was Colonel Andrew Hampton from Rutherford County, NC. The Hamptons were ancestors of George Washington, Robert E. Lee, and Merriwether Lewis.

Bristolian here, it infuriates me they don’t even teach this here locally in schools. I’ve always thought it was so interesting, and you’d never even know if was a thing except for all of the things named state of Franklin in Johnson City (although most don’t think twice about the names, and never look into it.)

As I age, I gain a deeper respect for Appalachian history because of the free state of Jones & Franklin, which I never heard of till now. American self governing Democracy is the way to fix our country. Representative democracy is really the cause of our excesses. Amazing the Appalachian Americans had such foresight.

However I had a front row seat to seeing how corrupt the entire curriculum is in public education. They do not want an educated public they want a public that’s educated to their beliefs, which in obedient taxpayers.

And not a darn thing has changed here in NC. The politicians completely ignore this side of the state until they want something from us. I don't believe a single person in Raleigh would even notice if we broke off and formed our own state until taxes are due. Although being forgotten about by politicians can be a good thing.

Hello Appalachian Storyteller! I live in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains in North Georgia. I can walk to Kennesaw Mountain from my house., although city life is fast encroaching! 🙄 I had heard of sterilized versions of the failed state of Franklin when I was a history major in college but the fifteen odd minutes I spent here taught me more about it than everything else I've seen over the years!
