    Going drawer by drawer, zone by zone is how I decluttered each room last winter. Did the same with the garage. My winter goal is the full basement. I will never do the Marie Kondo method of taking everything out. Talk about overwhelming!

  • @fabienneroure9995
    @fabienneroure9995 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    Thank you for another very motivating video! Marie Condo's method (nothing against this nice lady) doesn't work for me it's too overwhelming. Onion peel, section by section, is what helped me tremendously. Now I'm in a good place with my decluttering but it's amazing how I can still find things to declutter! Take care and cheers from Canada. ❤🧡🦊🦔🐿

      I started with Marie Kondo several years ago. But the onion method has been working better since then. 😂

    • @fabienneclavier5984
      @fabienneclavier5984 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Her method is actually awful because it's overwhelming and time consuming. Never understood its popularity. Going small area by small area is so much easier!

    • @HowToGYST
      @HowToGYST  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I do think it has merit, particularly if you can dedicate a large amount of time and energy to it, but I take the slow and steady approach these days.

    • @meisjeViv
      @meisjeViv ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I loved using her method when I was unemployed and had no money but a whole lot of time. I combined 'bringing nothing new in' (because of aforementioned lack of money, that part was easy) with long intense decluttering sessions, treating it like a hobby. Now that my life is different, I split up the categories into much smaller sub-categories to do at once. I really like the 'do like items all at once' strategy. One drawer at the time feels unefficient to me but sometimes it's impossible to get all the like things together all at once (especially my partner's things, that haven't been grouped very well before yet)

    You nailed it about your husband's clothes on the floor. You know you'll clean up your stuff. His may be there indefinitely. Letting him deal with his own stuff is freeing (until it encroaches on other territory).

    • @Chrissyhappy
      @Chrissyhappy ปีที่แล้ว +9

      When we got our first house, my husband used to just throw his clothes on the floor next to the bed. I picked up and laundered and put it back over and over. After asking him to put it in the laundry basket more than once with no result, I decided to just kick the clothes under the bed. I couldn’t bear seeing them on the floor but under the bed I could just about cope with. A week later he came down the stairs needing his black jeans because he was going out. He asked why they weren’t in the wardrobe as they’d been put ‘in the wash’ over a week ago. I said that was confusing because anything that was in the linen basket was washed and put away. I told him anything that was left on the floor was kicked under the bed. He went out in jeans that needed washed. He used the linen basket after that 😂. I also told him I wasn’t his mother and he could wash clothes too.🤣

    • @HowToGYST
      @HowToGYST  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I used to do something similar with Sam's clothes - I'd chuck them in the dresser cupboard. 😂 He washes the bedclothes though so I take care of the clothes (because I hate dressing and undressing the bed).

    The few times I pulled everything out and saw how much stuff there was I got totally overwhelmed and walked away from it. It was left there so long and I struggled to face it. I had to get a friend to help me get it back in some order. Now I try do something once a week and like you always say get it out of the house asap. Got two small bag and a box out this week. I think I’m great 😂 Have a great week. Mary, Joes wife 🙇‍♀️👏💪👍🙏💐🐕‍🦺

    Another time waster for me has been watching so many decluttering videos that were too overwhelming.
    This one is HONESTLY the most helpful i have ever seen. It's so simple and easy. Having the maybe pile eliminates SO much stress. Doing it in small doses creates a sense of accomplishment that makes me feel like "I can do this."
    For me, this is the last one i ever need to watch.(I will still watch your future videos, though lol) You nailed it! I will try to remember to come back and give you an update on my progress which I know I will make very soon. What a relief!

    I have to give myself little mini adventures or little gifts or perks so that I don’t squeeze myself too tight for too long and wind up doing massive binge behavior. It was like bulimia but with stuff. Binge. Purge. And then just getting to know my real self better goes a long way also. It takes away a lot of that “should” or fantasy self stuff.

      We get donation collection bags through the door on a Thursday and they get collected the Monday after. I declutter on the Sunday and leave it by the front door. It goes out 7am on the Monday. No time to change my mind 😂👍. I love that we get these bags.

    • @HowToGYST
      @HowToGYST  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's brilliant, Chrissy! And yes, Anya, that exit strategy is so important. If I don't get the stuff out pretty quickly, some of it will inevitably find its way back into regular rotation.

    Stopping the flow for me means saying no thanks to my mother as she tries to give me either things from her house, or general stuff - sometimes a gift, sometimes its I don't want this, but I don't want to throw it away, you take it and deal with it. I lived in a 1 bed apartment for 10+ years, very limited space. So I had to operate a 1 in 1 out system.
    I have for years disliked gifts, as a young person, sure I didn't have enough money to cover what I really wanted, as an adult that has fairly minimal needs/wants, I generally find that gifts are just jobs for me. I hate waste, some one just has to say, oh I'll be throwing it away and they know I'll cave and find the right person for the object.

    Laura have you read Kurashi at Home? I was very surprised to find that KonMari finally accepted the limitations of her method after becoming a mom to a second child 😮 It was a refreshing adjustment. I like the pragmatism of it. It's like: KonMari for the rest of us😂
    I'm too disabled to do the whole declutter in one go. I like to do one small space at time. It's taken years but bit by bit I'm getting there. It's so fun to see progress🎉

    I need to do this...a little at a time I think would work best for me. We may have to have our bathroom remodeled due to an old pipe being corroded and now we basically have a waterfall in our basement if we use the sink in there, so that has gotten me motivated to get rid of a bunch of the stuff that was in there under the sink. Ah, the joys of living in a 70 year old house..

    I have been decluttering, which started in July 2023. Major useless items went out in contractor bags. Paper clutter has gone the way of the shredder, especially all political junk and ads from a medical network trying to make me switch from current one. Of course I’m not done yet as I always write down in a notebook what has been thrown away.

    The biggest waste of time is decluttering with my mom. She despises everything related to cleaning, organizing, and, of course, decluttering. She has a lot of unused stuff, but she can't make decisions and doesn't want others to make 'em. So, every time she spends about half an hour shouting why I SHOULDN'T open this, move that, and of course, toss anything. Then she goes hysteric, calls me names, takes her coat and goes out 'til late night. So I have to deal with tears, headache, blood pressure, loss of motivation and unfinished decluttering/organizing project.

  • @annamariabo8963
    @annamariabo8963 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was so bad about buying all the fancy organisational tools and containers and not realizing I am just not the person who decants their rice and pasta.
    But as a marathon runner, I have to say running a marathon is not really good for you. 😂 Training for a marathon is healthy, running one is not.
