    Fates is probably the most min maxed Fire Emblem game and that's probably why it's my favorite game in the series.
    The gameplay is great and the supports are genuinely really nice to read since they're from a great writing team, of course there are some snags but isnt that the case with every Fire Emblem support system?

    I found conquest really fun in gameplay. Probably one of the better ones even if it can get power scaled easily

    I love Conquest, it's gameplay is pitch perfect. Engage feels like so much damn work to play because of how much there is to do in the Somniel and so many factors to consider during battle. Other FE games are a bit too straight forward, including BR. Conquest just hits the nail on the head. If only it had better writing. But making fun of the Conquest plot is part of the fun too honestly.

      @@mysmallnoman I mean I’d agree if wyvern Elise was a bad build. Her hit rates in this image suck major ass because she has a 65 hit weapon equipped. With a fire tome and a calamity gate (for blue enemy matchups) she’s got reliable combat for most of the game. Not to mention, her bulk in Malig is really solid so if you can’t rely on her hitting at some location you can just have her face tank a few enemies (maybe use horse spirit)

    Fates is my favorite Fire Emblem, and Conquest is a big reason why. While the story has its issues, I enjoyed the fact that many of the bosses in one route were characters you used in other routes, making the battles have more narrative weight. This was my favorite iteration of the re-classing system too. You were able to go across classes to get different skills, but there were some constraints that gave each character an identity in battle still. Then the map designs were really good, presenting new challenges that seemed overwhelming at first, but were fair once you figured them out.

    I'm a rare person who sees Conquest's story as the best of Fates.... although in the sense of "most enjoyable" rather than it being good. Birthright suffers from a ton of out=of-nowhere named character deaths to add cheap sadness to the otherwise "best" route, while Revelation's Valla curse I find even sillier than the throne thing. But also, Conquest I just find "so bad it's hilarious" (especially Garon) while the other two routes are mostly boring.
    Though one other commonly-cited issue you didn't mention: Hans and Iago are terrible villains, aren't even fun like Garon, and they LONG overstay their welcome. In any other Fire Emblem, they'd be dead in the first act of the story, but here they last until almost the end.
    I think you hit the nail on the head with Corrin. It's not them that's the problem, it's the writing around them. I think another big part of this is Corrin being treated as an "Avatar" when they really shouldn't be, which results in a lot of awkward moments where other characters do morally-questionable stuff on their behalf to keep the player-insert's hands clean, even in situations where it likely wouldn't be a big deal. For example, Leo kills Zola and Hans on all routes, despite Corrin themselves showing zero remorse towards these characters (outside Zola on Birthright). Similarly, the siblings are quick to take the fall for Corrin's flaws instead of letting them learn and grow.

  • @maverick5169
    @maverick5169 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Oh my god, finally someone normal who doesn't blindly follow the echo chamber about Corrin. I don't get why people blame them when the horrible idea was Azura's plan and the hoshido invasion was already being planned. What was Corrin supposed to do? Rebel , fight Garon in ch15 and get absolutely demolished? Again, the throne plan was horrible but there is nothing Corrin themselves could have done, Azura should have tried to bait at least Leo to Valla to make him see the crystal ball.
    I also want to clear the whole Mary Sue thing. A Mary Sue is someone who never fails and has everyone complimenting them. QC!Corrin never has something fully going their way and in almost every chapter the main cast (aside from Elise) says how naive they are, Corrin spends the whole story taking heavy criticism from the cast. Regardless how you feel about their writing being good or bad, that's another issue. But this version of Corrin cannot be a Mary Sue since most of their ideas are massive faliures.
    I always felt the issue with the whole Fates' plot is Garon being someone else, the true King Garon is supposed to be this stern yet just king. Had he been like that in the actual story, CQ would have been more pleasent to follow and Corrin&Garon's bond would have turned the former into a playable Camus archtype. And you don't even need to change the world building, just capitalize on the fact that hoshidians aren't the angels they claim to be, as we see in Rev Corrin x Azura support they canonically kept resources for themselves and Ryoma is willingly to blackmail Corrin by keeping Elise's life hostage. The pieces for a great route were all there.

      The problem with Fates' plot is the same as Three Houses. IS took a single complete story and chopped it up in to multiple different ones which all assume you know what happens in the other despite them being AU stories.

    • @geoffreybrosnan1186
      @geoffreybrosnan1186 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I disagree with Corrin not being a Mary Sue because things don't go their way, as I disagree with that being an integral part of what defines that type of character, more that is a common consequence of a story having to be warped around them, which I still do think is a big issue with Corrin. For example Corrin's viewpoint of not wanting to kill anyone forces the story to bend around that desire in a way that is almost comical. Corrin having to pretty much never make morally compromising decisions despite leading an invading army is absurd. To me there isn't much of a difference between saying "Corrin is mostly a poorly written in the story of Conquest" and "Corrin has okay writing, but the circumstances of Conquest just make them look worse" because the way I see it a large portion of Conquest's bad writing is a consequence of Corrin and their need to try and tie together borderline contradictory ideas of 1. Wanting to write a morally grey story, 2. Wanting to write a paragon self insert that never does anything out of ill intent and 3. Never giving the player any choice in the matter past 1 death which is never brought up again.
      Corrin's definitely far from the worst egregious Mary Sue or the only notable improvement that could be made to the story but I would still stand by that they are a major problem with the writing.

    • @maverick5169

      @@geoffreybrosnan1186 taken from the dictionary page
      "Mary Sue is a term used to describe a fictional character, usually female, who is seen as too perfect and almost boring for lack of flaws"
      Corrin's flaw of being too naive, sheltered and idealist is brought up and critized in many parts of the story. So they aren't a Mary Sue
      And ok, find a way for Corrin that allows them to influence Garon and the invasion in any possible way without getting executed by Iago or Garon himself. Tell me how they were going to expose Garon without any proof whatsoever.

      About the whole plot point with the crystal ball revealing Garon's true identity that I think needs to be addressed: let's say that Corrin and Azura actually did use it to show at least one of the Nohrian siblings the truth, what would've happened then? I believe the answer here is that they would either not believe Corrin and Azura at best, at least not without proof, or accuse them of lying about it and decide to not trust them at worst, with both viewpoints coming from their belief that Garon can somehow be changed back to the way he once was. This is further proven later on, were Xander tells Corrin to their face that he will brand them as a traitor if Corrin is proven wrong, and his 3 younger siblings are all distraught from seeing Garon in his true form. This leads me to believe that they would trust Corrin begrudgingly at best, and would likely become colder towards Corrin and Azura for trying to get them to believe something that they don't want to, even despite knowing that Garon has become much more cruel.

    Was fucking insane, the precision needed to clear each map was water tight and took a lot of resets due to bad planning and rng.
    First and so far only game to make me concede a character death as I gave up Xanders son in the finale to set up my next player phase because I couldn’t come up with an alternative.

    4:30 It's funny that you say that because I noticed in most other spinoff material that features Corrin, they're recieved a lot more positively and is much less divisive. I think it's really the fact that Corrin is an avatar that they're seen as a scapegoat for Fates' writing issues. Robin and Byleth don't get as much backlash likely because FE13 and FE16 just have much better writing.

    On conquests narrative. The first thing you need to understand about Fates’s narrative is that all three routes should be taken as three parts of a whole in that conquest is only one piece of the whole story. Thematically Fates’s story is about trust and family and it explores these themes from a buddhist framework. Once you understand that Corrin is supposed to be an allusion to the original buddha then a lot of the narrative decision make more sense.
    For conquest specifically you see a lot of these themes explored through Corrin’s relationship with Nohr as a whole and the reputation nohr has with the rest of the world. Nohr is viewed as the dark kingdom. Very miltiaristic and rigid with a tyrant of a king which obviously clashes with Corrin’s naive and peace loving worldview. However that’s only the surface of what Nohr looks like. Conquest’s story is about delving deeper beneath that surface in the kind of place nohr truly is. Unmasking it as it were in order to find the light in the darkness which are the people of nohr. The characters you come to meet. How this relates to Garon is that he’s the metaphorical mask that lays over Nohr so having him sit on the throne of truth to reveal the ugliness of what he truly is is essentially the darkness of Nohr because that’s what Garon represents.
    A lot of people like to criticize the fact that we never see what Garon was like when he was “good” or that he never really fights the posession but I think that’s the point. When you look at the end of birthright it’s implied Garon has already been dead since the start of the game and conquest’s ending kind of confirms that so in the vein the point of the narrative isn’t so much in freeing garon from possession it’s realizing he’s beyond saving which is expressed in Xander’s speech in chapter 27. His whole arc throughout both BR and CQ is that he’s in denial over what he knows deep down his father has become. Where as in BR that denial runs to the extreme to the point he can’t see the truth for what it is. In CQ this arc reaches a positive conclusion where he’s able to overcome his own doubts finally admit to himself that the father he knew is never coming back and the thing standing before him is not his father nor ever has been.
    A lot of what makes conquest work is the idea that people are learning to put their faith in Corrin. Corrin is a representation of the light within the darkness of Nohr. Their kind pacifistic nature is what draws people to them. A lot of the conflict in conquest is centered on Corrin proving to others that they can be trusted that people should put their faith in them. That’s why they don’t kill anybody in the ice tribe village. It’s to show they can be trusted. That kilma can put his faith in them to fix it which becomes prominent later when Hinoka and Ryoma do the same. Corrin’s whole arc is about them facing the darkness of Nohr and both accept and change it for the better while remaining unwavering in their childish and naive ideals
    Also yes, LaslowxSelena is my OTP. Their supports are basically an extension of the ones they had in awakening and it’s sweet to see how much they’ve both matured

    So one thing about Conquest that i really like is that the game hit the best balanced in FE history. The game Can be pretty difficult but it never felt unfair. The weapon balanced is amazing. You know how in most FE game you can just stack up your party with high level weapons. Thus making all of those early game weapon completely useless. The fact that Fates make bronze weapon useable even in late game is amazing. It also nerve javelin and 1-2 range weapon in general which i think is pretty good move. Overall I think Fates probably have the best balance in all of FE game.

    • @UltimusTerminus
      @UltimusTerminus ปีที่แล้ว

      Conquest is my favorite game in the series and I agree with you for the most part. The game is very tightly balanced, but I'd say Lunatic's enemy only skills like Inevitable End and Staff Savant are too much. Regarding the weapons, I didn't really like how higher ranked weapons have annoying debuffs like Silvers decreasing stats. It just makes using them a chore and not worth it for the most part, especially those weapons that halve your attack. This is more of a Fates as a whole issue though.

    • @riqua27
      @riqua27 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@UltimusTerminus I think for Lunatic I always see it as a mode you play after you beat hard difficulty. Cause playing Conquest Lunatic blind is absolutely miserable. Not as bad as Thracia though cause at least you can see the map. So for skill like Staff savant and inevitable end. I think it is a fine skill cause by the time you get there you should already have an answer for it. Like Shuriken Breaker for example.
      Now I'm going to say something controversial but I think Fates silver weapon is actually genius. Now in most Fire emblem game the way they balanced the high level weapon is by reducing the durability. However that never stop you from using silver or killer weapon because if they break you can just buy another one. There's absolutely no incentive on not using silver/killer weapon. Fates making silver weapon/Brave weapon debuff you is actually genius because now you actually have incentive to not just use them all the time.

      Agreed, the unit and map balance were really superb, and keeps rewarding creative play the more you play it. It really feels like IS playtested the shit out of Conquest, and just ran out of time to playtest Birthright and Revelations at all. And I agree with what Lizardman said; unlike Engage the in-between map stuff doesn't feel horribly drawn out. To again contrast it with Engage, I find Conquest's reclassing system to be literally perfect, mixing a perfect blend of developer-enforced unit identity and player customization (from S and A+ supports). It also gives you just the right amount of master and second seals I feel, and if you really want you can get more by visiting other peoples' castles. Engage on the other hand I find is wayyy too stingy with second seals until the mid-game, and the fact that you only really want to reclass while already promoted just feels bad.
      Conquest I can start up a run planning for something goofy like Fighter Camilla or Archer Effie and get that build online pretty quickly, and have if feel like a very unique experience. And if I was better, these builds would work just fine even on Lunatic. I really gotta compliment Lunatic's balance in CQ, as it can feel oppressively brutal when you first attempt it, but the more you become familiar with the game the more you're able to experiment and play around in that mode. The TH-camr Zoran in particular makes it look like a JOKE.
      I think the higher level weapons is the big gameplay thing I think could have been done better, because while yeah I agree it needed to be balanced with the durability system, as it stands right now there's just no reason to use Silvers instead of forged iron or even bronze weapons. The current system is better than having Silvers with no drawbacks, but currently I NEVER use silvers which isn't a good thing either.

    • @riqua27
      @riqua27 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LoudWaffle I think the real reason why you want to use Silver is that it's a cheaper version of Iron +4 weapon. Keep In mind Iron+4 cost you 16000 gold and also you need 16 ore to forge. Silver on the other hand cost 4000 gold and require 0 ore to forge. Like I said it's not a weapon you're going to use all the time. But it is really good as a boss kill option. Not to mention it can also work really well as a dual strike option because the debuff only apply if you're the one who initiate the attack.

The min-maxing is so satisfying, the added depth of support building makes it way more intricate and fun to play around, and the game is genuinely challenging enough to make that knowledge feel rewarding to learn and execute properly. Also, ya really didn't play the Valla third of FE14.
    Everyone who ever took a dump on it usually admit that they didn't really play it, stemming from not having access to it physically.
    Because if ya did play it, it would not be in your "Get in the Bin" spot at all.

    Recently played through CQ for the first time and I definitely felt that it rewards a lot of game knowledge, which unfortunately hit me in a bad way. I ended up so frustrated by the end that I don't have much of a desire to replay it (maybe someday), which sucks cus I imagine it does get a lot more fun on subsequent playthroughs when you can make informed builds. I can absolutely see how its a game that either bounces people off of it or completely sucks them in. I did really like the duel strike/pair up stuff though, really made positioning important

      The Reason for Fate's sloppy story, is because the writers where trying to achieve too much with not enough time. Intelligent Systems had an idea for Fate to have three stories to appeal to everyone, but they realized that they didn't have enough writers. So they hired an outside writer, Shin Kibayashi was that writer. Intelligent Systems wanted Shin to write the outline for each pathway, what happened instead is that Shin wrote 500 pages for each pathway. Intelligent Systems knew this was too long so they cut the story into pieces without the writers permission and the fact the Nintendo demanded Fates come on the Fire Emblem Anniversary only made things worse. Which resulted in this hilariously mess of a story. The good news this that there is a manga based on Fates that is a little better. Its called Fire Emblem If: the Crown of Niberlung.

      It is assumed that he doesn't have the full game on a cart on him from how he evaluated the thirds as listed on his tier list. He probably only has the Nohr third on a cart to which he was able to revist this third of FE14, before writing the rest of the thirds off from what he had been told about them or from the only times he had played them since launch. If he had the actual full game and evaluated FE14 as a full package than the piece meal thirds Nintendo makes it out to be from appeasing shareholders, FE14 would be listed as "Alright" on that list than how it appears now.

    I feel like Engage learned the best lessons from Conquest's design. Many of the gimmick maps in Conquest feel overly-centralizing, while Engage's gimmick maps feel more natural, like the gimmicks enhance the pre-established gameplay of FE, unlike many of Conquest's maps which, to me, feel like the gimmick detracts from what would have otherwise been a fun map.

    You should go back to Revelations. It's very much like Conquest where not having knowledge on a first play is kind of rough but subsequent plays allow you to dominate.
    Warp doesn't exist in Fates but rescue dancing Azura is just as gross amd abusable as a Warp staff.
    I do not care about stories in FE as they are all equally serviceable. CQ sits at the top of the list along with SS, Rev, Engage, and SoV.

    • @mercenarybdu
      @mercenarybdu 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Warp is a DLC skill that can be learned by only female characters that reclassed into a Witch and reached level 15 or greater. But instead of warping to any part of the map, they can only warp to an adjuacent allied unit on the map for where they could teleport to before taking another action upon doing so.

    I’d rate Conquest as peak Fire Emblem mechanics, paired with one of the weakest stories in the series. My one complaint about the gameplay is that keeping track of enemy skills and mechanics on higher difficulties can be exhausting across long play sections.
    (I have not played Engage, Archinaea DS games, or the Japan-only games)

  • @mega77

    Conquest in classic hard mode, without loosing a character is very (too much) difficult. Had to restart the game 3 times. On my 3rd run I had to turn down difficulty to normal then easy, because at this point I was exhausted after loosing a character after 1h of gameplay and resetting again and again. Most of the time I felt that deaths were unfair. I had really good units being destroyed by boulders being shot from 10 tiles aways etcetc. As mentioned I also felt like I was losing because I didn't made the right class or reclass, had chosen the best skill or optimum pair up. Even the bonus fights (castle attack) are hard.
    Even though I enjoyed 80% of the game 😊. But if you are like me (some one who likes to play in classic hard mode, without loosing a character, but at the same time isn't 1n hardcore Fire Emblem player) , prepare to suffer on many chapters and hit some serious walls during your playthrough 💀

      In the chapter where units are destroyed by boulders, I thought it would be endgame for me. Then I realized I could use tonics on the tank characters and suddenly Effie was doubling all faceless in that chapter. That was a huge lift and I finished the chapter in 7 turns with all special items and no casualties. I just focused on destroying the boulder-throwing rocks first and kept weak units out of range.

      It's hard but fair. It's possible to finish this game without changing any of the default skills and sticking with master seals. This is my favorite FE game because the strategy aspect is very strong. It's always possible to finish a chapter with well thought-out moves, judicious use of dragon veins, judicious use of pair ups and supports for increased defense at the front lines, judicious use of attack stance, positioning, standard teams, and sometimes with the help of tonics (without permanent boost items).

    • @thiagoaraujos
      @thiagoaraujos ปีที่แล้ว

      For each chapter, I usually play two runs: one to get a sense of what the chapter events look like, where/when reinforcements spawn, etc. In this mode, I don't care if my units die as long as I finish the chapter. After that, I restart and try to learn from my mistakes. Most of the time, I die because I'm not prepared for the reinforcements or because of some silly mistake like being hit by a critical attack. If the reinforcements are overwhelming, it's often possible to avoid them by, for example, blocking the forts with your units or allocating units in anticipation. The goal is to finish the chapter without losing any units this time. I try to play without risks, not throwing any units that can receive critical attacks, for example, and being wary of movement and attack ranges.

So today I just skip everything and enjoy the cool and challenging map design

  • @mercenarybdu

    Can't stand the story of the Nohr 3rd of FE14 as it has the weakest writing of the thirds. I played it a few times on all of the difficulties for the challenges it presented. But didn't bother with it after beating it 3-4 times on the various difficulties on classic mode.
    FE14 is one game with 3 campaigns, not 3 separate games.
    Nintendo purposely cut the game up and sold it in 3rds as a means to appease shareholders. It may have garnered record sales for those shareholders, but at the same time gutted Nintendo's good name of always having the full base game on the cart at launch. If it werent for the backlash, FE16 would have also been cut up and sold in piece meal, but due to the backlash Nintendo kept FE16 together.
